John Secondi
The Canadian textile industry is producing premier class, high quality goods for the international
market. Our targeted, market-focused approach, our investments in R&D and our highly-skilled
workforce contribute massively to our ability to position ourselves in this way. Our dedication to
our industry and our belief that we should continue to build on the decades of experience and
expertise behind us are also driving this strategy.
Workwear Canada is a landmark industry event that has received wide acclaim in Montreal, both
within our own industry and beyond. It is our goal to ensure that Canadian and international buyers,
especially those representing first responders, municipalities, public security agencies and
medical experts, are fully aware of the excellent standard and range of products offered to them
by our industry. We also wish to ensure that we as an industry recognize the progress we are
making by offering you unparalleled networking opportunities, enabling you to build your business
strategically through commercial and technological partnerships.
It is therefore my great pleasure to welcome you to Mississauga today. I wish you all an excellent
day of business and discovery.
John Secondi
President of CTA
John Secondi
Président de CTA
Welcome // Bienvenue
François Lapierre
The events in the Hightex series - Workwear Canada, Expo Hightex and Buytex - have become
landmark events for our industry. And the industry has told us that it wants these
initiatives to continue to grow stronger. I am therefore very proud to welcome you to this
first edition of Workwear Canada in Toronto. I believe Workwear Canada is symbolic of our
strength as partners and of the value of building upon Canada’s reputation as a supplier of
quality, innovative and customized textile products.
Workwear Canada is exactly the kind of activity that the industry has prescribed in the Technology
Roadmap for the Canadian textile industry. The Roadmap is our structure for ensuring
that technological innovation remains a cornerstone of business strategy. Ongoing development
of our products will enable us to maintain our position in the global market place and
it will furthermore open new market opportunities to us.
The Roadmap’s motto is “Innovation through partnership”. The business, technological and
strategic networking opportunities being offered to you today represent some of the tangible
outcomes of this vision. From manufacturers to retailers, from end-users to researchers
-wherever you may be positioned on the value chain, at Workwear Canada you become a
part of our drive for excellence.
I am sure you will indeed have a great day of networking and I hope to see you all at Expo
Hightex in Montreal in the fall.
François Lapierre
President of the Board // CTT Group
Lac-Mac was established in 1920 as a manufacturer of products specifically
designed for the health care market. In the early 1980’s
the need for greater protection in the operating room became increasingly
important. After researching a number of technologies
available in the market place, Lac-Mac initiated collaboration
with W.L. Gore & Associates to help engineer a product using the
innovation of their barrier membrane for use in surgical products.
The result was the development of GORE ® Surgical Barrier Fabrics.
This liquid-proof fabric provides complete protection from
fluids and bloodborne pathogens while allowing body moisture
to escape keeping the wearer very comfortable. Products made
from GORE ® Barrier Fabric meet the standard for highest level of
protection. With the knowledge and expertise gained in developing
this high-performance product, expansion to a line of Chemical
Splash Protective wear was launched. Our suits can be used in
Petrochemical manufacturing, Mining, Potash and Phosphate production
and many others. Today Lac-Mac is recognized as a
market leader with unsurpassed expertise in manufacturing products
made with various types of GORE® fabrics. Our in-house design
team can custom design products to meet specific customer
needs with very quick turn-around time and competitive prices.
We are ISO 9001 registered, we have a Medical Device Manufacturing
Metcalf Brothers is a manufacturer of quality fabrics for the uniform
industry. We produce fabrics in a wide range of contents,
weights, and weaves.
Unlike other mills that produce piece dye fabrics, Metcalf only carries
stock dye/fiber dye products. The fiber dye process is more
costly, but it provides the color continuity that customers are looking
for and is vital to the uniform industry.
Wicking, soil repellency and other popular performance
features are also part of the Metcalf catalog.
Metcalf has achieved its competitive edge, in part, through joint ventures
with plants overseas and in Mexico. In addition, Metcalf works
as a team with its manufacturers, helping them plan better and buy
smarter. For its middle market customers, Metcalf even provides a
needs assessment each quarter, helping to streamline expenses and
minimize overhead.
Woolpower is a registered trademark for high performance thermal
undergarments and socks. The products are made of a unique combination of
2/3 fine merino wool and 1/3 of high-tech synthetic fibers. An advanced knitting
technique creates a terry-loop weave which provides a thermal insulating layer
and keeps a body warm when its cold, even if the garments are wet from sweat
or rain. The garment is soft, lightweight, elastic, durable and absorbs and wicks
moisture away from the skin.
The Woolpower products are tested regularly by SINTEF of Norway, both in
a laboratory environment and on test groups ranging from forestry workers,
fishermen, road workers and drivers to the military and oil platform
workers. Over the years, several thousand field trials have been conducted
on a variety of test persons in Germany, Norway, Sweden, Russia, France,
the U.S. etc.
Wool terry cloth contains up to 80% air, which binds to the crimpy fibers. The air
forms an insulating layer along the skin and prevents heat from escaping.
In addition, the air bound in the terry cloth loops creates a double thermal
effect. In tests conducted in Siberia by Russian and Germany Governments,
Woolpower products have been rated for workers in conditions as low as
60C.
Woolpower is known for their demanding customers who test the products
for many years before buying. These include The Swedish Army, The Finish
Army, The French Army, The Norwegian Navy, The German Military Forces,
many police forces in Europe, as well as airports, harbors, utility and construction
