THE ALCOHOL AND DRUGS SERVICE
This leaflet has been produced by
The Alcohol and Drugs Service (ADS) comprises a
multidisciplinary team providing a range of specialist
interventions/treatments for people with alcohol and
drug related problems from 18 years to 65 years – in
the Northern Sector (Derry, Limavady and Strabane) of
the WHSCT.
The Hidden Harm Social Worker liaises with all other service
providers involved in the care of this client group including
CAMHS and Daisy West. The Alcohol and Drug Service
also refers to relevant agencies who offer support to families
providing alternative intervention and diversion. The Hidden
Harm Social Worker can only receive clients from within the
Alcohol and Drugs Service caseload.
You can be referred to our service from GP’s, General
Medical and Psychiatric Services, Social Services, Probation
and Primary Care Services.
ACCESSING OUR SERVICES The Alcohol and Drug
Service has a Hidden Harm Social Worker who works as
an integrated part of the team. The Hidden Harm Social
Worker works with clients referred to the Alcohol and Drugs
Service, who have alcohol/drug dependency and where
there may be a significant impact on their children and their
families. The Hidden Harm Social Worker also provides
support/advice to relevant agencies in relation to Hidden
Harm issues. The Service also sees clients on an
When we discuss alcohol
or drug misuse the focus
is often on the individual
directly affected. Alcohol
or drug misuse also has
a clear and direct impact
on those connected to the
misuser – it has an impact
on their family, on their
friends, on their community,
and on our society as a
whole.
The biggest indirect impact
is often felt by the child or
young person who is born
to or living with a carer/
parent who is misusing
alcohol and substance.
We call this Hidden Harm.
This leaflet outlines the
available services for
Children, Young People
and Adults affected by
alcohol or drugs living
in the Western Health &
Social Care Trust area.
CAMHS – DRUG AND ALCOHOL SERVICE
CAMHS stands for Child and Adolescent Mental
Health Service and we offer a specialist service for
children and young people who have mental
health concerns/issues. When drug and alcohol
misuse is part of an overall presentation, we have
Specialist Drug and Alcohol staff who work more
specifically with the children and families where
substance misuse is causing concerns about
areas of their life, whether through their own
misuse or that of a family member/friend.
ACCESSING OUR SERVICES Usually we ask
the child/young person to be seen by their GP for
an initial screening, this helps us to define the
current risks and to determine the urgency of a
referral. Referrals are also accepted from other
statutory and voluntary services, e.g. Social
Services, Emergency Department and Daisy West.
A referral will be forwarded to our Referral
Co-ordinator who will then determine the specialist
area within CAMHS that the child/young person
and their family will be seen by or alternatively
they may be sign posted to the appropriate
service for support.
CAMHS is for Children/Young People whose age
range from 5 years up until 18th Birthday.
DAISY WEST - DRUGS & ALCOHOL
INTERVENTION SERVICE FOR YOUTH
Daisy West works with young people who are at
risk of, or already misusing drugs or alcohol, or
who are indirectly affected by another person's
substance misuse (Hidden Harm).
We offer support for 8 - 25 years old if they
live in the Western Health & Social Care Trust
area (Derry/Londonderry, Limavady, Strabane,
Omagh and Fermanagh).
DAISY provides young people and their
families with an individually tailored package
of support that can include Brief Intervention,
Mentoring, Counselling, Group Work and
Family Support.
In relation to counseling this is a process
that aims to help the young person explore
problems in their lives and understand them
better by supporting them to help find solutions.
It provides the young person with a space
where they can talk things out honestly with
someone who is not involved in their life in
a personal way, and who will not judge, give
advice or tell them what to do.
The counselor will help the young person
understand the thoughts, feelings and the
emotional experiences hidden behind certain
behaviors that may be getting them into trouble.
ACCESSING OUR SERVICES Our key role
is to provide information and advice on the
effects of alcohol and drugs; provide young
people and their families with appropriate
packages of support that will reduce the impact
of substance misuse on their lives; reduce risk
taking behaviours; support and sustain positive
changes in young peoples' lives and promote
healthier relationships.
Each young person will have a designated
key-worker who will provide a range of tailored
interventions to meet their individual needs.
This may involve one-to-one brief interventions,
mentoring or group-work programmes. The
key-worker will link the young person to other
more specialist support within the Daisy West
service or external agencies where appropriate.
Daisy West also works closely with the
CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health
Service) Team to offer support for young
people with drug, alcohol and mental health
issues.
Referrals to Daisy West can be made by
all statutory or voluntary services, family
members or by self-referral.
Once a referral is received we will contact the
referrer to acknowledge receipt and arrange to
meet the young person.
Opening Times: Mon - Fri 9am - 5pm
DAISY Staff also work evenings and weekends
in line with Client needs.
