an introduction to the air force The mission of the United States Air Force Academy is to educate, train, and inspire men and women to become officers of character motivated to lead the United States Air Force in service to our nation. The Academy is nestled against the eastern slope of the Colorado Rocky Mountains, eight miles north of Colorado Springs and fifty-five miles south of Denver. The campus is comprised of 18,000 acres situated 7,000 feet above sea level. The campus includes world-class facilities fostering and supporting cadet academics, athletics, leadership, and character development. Fairchild Hall is home to both modern classrooms and laboratories. The McDermott Library has wireless capability, contains over 1.5 million volumes, and its special collections include major works in aeronautics and military aviation history. Vandenberg and Sijan Halls are coed dormitories that are home to cadets. The dorms are named for former Air Force leaders and heroes. Our athletic facilities—some of the finest in the nation—include an athletic complex, a gymnasium, a field house, the Falcon Athletic Center, 150 acres of outdoor athletic fields plus the over 46,000 seat Falcon Football Stadium, and 2 championship golf courses. The Cadet Chapel provides the place to meet the spiritual needs of all cadets. The highly dedicated faculty includes more than 500 military and civilian instructors and several visiting professors from around the nation. Exchange officers from the other U.S. services and several foreign countries round out the faculty. About fifty percent of the faculty holds doctorate degrees; all have master’s degrees. The low student-faculty ratio, combined with an average class size of seventeen provides for a positive, personal learning environment.
academy Each cadet may select from thirty-two academic majors. Minors are offered in foreign languages and philosophy. Eligible cadets may graduate with more than one major. An exchange program allows selected cadets to attend school for a semester at one of the other service academies and the Canadian, Chilean, French, German, or Spanish Air Force Academy. Future plans call for initiating semester exchanges with the Japanese National Defense Academy, the Argentine Air Force Academy, and others. They will also have the opportunity to apply for semester-long study abroad programs at civilian universities in China, Morocco, and Russia, with other locations under consideration. Cadets participate in either intercollegiate or intramural sports. Twenty-seven intercollegiate teams compete at the Division I level. Cadets learn about flying through soaring classes and extracurricular flying-club activities. Other classes cover leadership, military tactics, survival, and honor. Exciting summer programs include extended visits to active-duty bases. Over eighty clubs provide cadets opportunities to explore interests in a number of activities including falconry. At graduation, each cadet is awarded a Bachelor of Science degree and a commission as a second lieutenant in the United States Air Force.
