As I write my last message 

to you as Chairman of India 

Club, I look back with immense 

pride and satisfaction with 

the transformation of our 

institute. It is said a picture 

says a thousand words and I 

think one needs to just come to 

the Club once, to see the rapid 

strides it’s taken in all spheres 

of its activities. 

I would like to thank the 

Board of Trustees, the Board 

of Directors, the Executive 

Committee, the staff and 

most importantly, you dear 

members, for having the faith 

in me and supporting me in all 

the initiatives I’ve undertaken 

and to ensure the success of all 

of these. 

I will continue to be part 

of the Executive Committee 

to support Siddharth with 

his vision of the Club. More 

importantly, I will continue to 

patronize the Club as one of the 

members too, to see that our 

institute sets newer standards 

for others to follow... 

The winds of change blow 

once again at our beloved 

institution! 

We have a new addition to 

the team, the Vice-Chairman, 

Mr. Sunil Sawlani. He brings 

with him a freshness and 

dynamism that will surely 

add immense value to the core 

management team of India 

Club, Dubai. I would like to take 

this opportunity to applaud 

the stellar performance of the 

previous Chairman, Mr. Sunil 

Singh. His zest and passion 

for our Club, was worth 

observing. 

The underlying ideals, that 

will be the guiding philosophy 

of the new team, will be 

‘continuous improvement’ 

and ‘sustained excellence’. 

However, this is easier said 

than done! For us to achieve 

this there has to be a unified, 

and consistent effort, by all 

members of this hallowed 

institution. 

Let us forge ahead together.

Antakshari 

Antakshari 2010 was one of 

the good events organised 

by India Club. Back after a gap 

of two years, the hosts Chandramohan 

and Shobhana spared 

no efforts in their groundwork, 

and their lilting voices only 

added colour to the occasion. 

Divided into three categories 

– children, friends and family 

ensured that all had the opportunity 

to sing & test their film 

based knowledge. Ample opportunities 

were thrown at the 

audience too, who responded 

with equal enthusiasm. 

While congratulating the Club 

on hosting such family events, I 

am sure maximum members’ 

participation would encourage 

India Club to go the extra mile. 

We look forward to more family 

programmes.

Jordan Tour 

A 

visit to Jordan was always 

on my list of travels so what 

better opportunity than to take 

the 4 day all inclusive tour arranged 

by India Club and Cox 

and Kings packed with activities 

and included visits to Amman, 

Petra, Wadi Rum and The Dead 

Sea. 

We drove to the famous rock 

city Petra. En-route there was 

a lot of singing and dancing in 

the 4 hour long journey followed 

by antakshari and games. Petra 

is the most famous attraction 

in Jordan. The beautiful rosecolored 

stone with the sunlight 

against it is truly magnificent. 

We drove to the picturesque 

Wadi Rum by bus. Dinner and 

dancing went on well into the 

night after which it was a wonderful 

experience to spend a 

night in a tent under the starry 

skies. Temperatures do rise and 

fall quickly in the wadi but going 

down to –5 degrees was 

something unexpected in the 

month of April. This was followed 

by a jeep ride next morning 

through the dramatic desert 

landscape with its beautiful rock 

formation. We stopped to see the 

Bedouins and their camels in the 

desert. The bus was waiting for 

us at the end of our wadi drive 

to take us to the Dead Sea. 

A four hour drive took us to 

the lowest point on earth – the 

Dead Sea. Driving down to the 

Dead Sea, which is 400 meters 

below sea level is without doubt 

one of the most dramatic and 

beautiful landscapes. Dead Sea, 

because of its rich cocktail of 

salts and minerals, is known for 

its curative properties and has 

evolved as a major attraction for 

health and wellness. 

Morning saw us scramble to 

collect the Dead Sea mud which 

we would carry with us back 

home. 

On the last day of our tour 

we were like one big family. We 

left for Amman by mid-day and 

reached in time for an Indian 

lunch followed by a visit to the 

Citadel Hill. This archaeological 

landmark features remnants 

from several different cultures 

and you can see a unique blend 

of the old and the new. It houses 

the Temple of Hercules, a Byzantine 

Basillica and the Jordan 

Archaeological Museum. 

The same evening was our 

flight back and with heavy 

hearts and with promises to 

keep in touch said our good 

byes and headed home. 

It was indeed an exhilarating 

experience and I look forward to 

being a part of the next tour.

Protect Childhood 

Dubai Foundation for Women 

and Children, ExHealth, 

India Club and SAATHI held a 

seminar on the Protect Childhood 

Campaign on 21st April 

2010 at the India Club at 5pm. 

One hundred and twenty ladies 

attended this seminar. 

Dr. Saroj Thapa, President of 

SAATHI was the keynote speaker 

while Mrs. Sangeeta Matta 

Verma, wife of Consul General 

of India was the chief guest. 

Dr. Saroj Thapa showed us 

slides about the behavioural 

patterns of abused children. She 

stressed on the need to report 

cases of abused children that we 

come across. We were given leaflets 

on Child Abuse Awareness. 

Dr. Saroj Thapa said that SAA- 

THI is still in the baby stage so 

there are many issues which are 

not yet resolved. 

Ancy from ExHealth also 

highlighted us with the problem 

of child abuse in the UAE and 

how it is being solved slowly 

but surely. 

Finally we were shown a film, 

Arabana, which stressed on the 

need for diligence about protecting 

children by celebrated Emirati 

film maker Navla Al Khaja 

which was disturbing and short. 

All the ladies then enjoyed some 

hot snacks and beverages.

Swimming Gala 

We would very much like to 

appreciate the hard work 

and dedication with which the 

Annual Swimming Gala is conducted 

and this year was no different. 

The event was organized 

smoothly and it was good to see 

so much encouragement given 

to all - young and old, especially 

the youngerchildren. It was 

good to see India Club awarding 

the overall prize to the younger 

age group.

This is regarding your contribution 

to SFS families by

India Club. 

The families who have recieved

support group 

•Started December 9th, 1999 

•Every since we started we 

have been meeting at least once 

a month with the exception of 

the summer camp we hold during 

the summer where we meet 

about 3 times a week. 

Aim 

To help families cope better 

practically and emotionally 

and to realize that they are not 

alone in their situations. The 

main aim was to bring families 

together on a common platform 

and focus on coping strategies 

for the whole family, especially 

the fathers and the siblings we 

regularly have visits from grand 

parents and try and give them 

the same kind of emotional support 

we give our families. 

SFS holds several public 

events especially during the 

Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF) 

and the Dubai Summer Surprises 

(DSS), we organize fashion 

shows, dance performances 

etc… these events are organized 

not only to integrate the families 

with and without individuals 

with special needs but also to 

encourage our families to enjoy 

the simple joys of life that are so 

often taken for granted by most 

people. 

SFS runs a structured volunteer 

program for volunteers 

ranging from 6 year olds to 60 

year olds. These volunteers are 

part of our family… a lot of our 

children do not have friends, 

but our volunteers provide the 

love and support our children 

need. 

An important task of SFS 

has been to spread awareness 

among the different sections of 

the society, about the needs of 

these families. There is a need 

to educate the masses about the 

various syndromes and disabilities 

and how to deal with a situation 

when they are confronted 

with such a child in public. All 

these children and their families 

need from us is acceptance, love 

and respect.

feel good factor

After the success of the 

members’ tour to Istanbul 

late last year, India Club 

organized another tour for the Easter 

Holidays; this time the destination 

was Jordan. The 4 day trip from 

April 8 – 11 took 38 members on a 

whirlwind tour of Amman, Petra, 

Wadi Rum and Dead Sea. The 

members got to enjoy the chilly 

weather in downtown Amman to 

the beautiful carvings on mountains 

in Petra; they stayed in the middle 

of a desert in a tent and had a mud 

bath on the shores of the Dead sea. 

From the dancing around the bonfire 

to relishing the local cuisine, all 

of them were unanimous with verdict of this being a 

wonderful holiday.. 0 


Antakshari 

After a gap of 2 years, Anthakshari was 

conducted at the Club’s Badminton court 

on May 14. The event was coordinated 

and conducted by the bubbly Shobana and 

effervescent Chandramohan. The event had 

three categories – Kids, Friends and Families. 

Due to the huge number of entries in the 

Family category, two rounds took place in 

this category. Over 70 members participated 

in the event which saw an audience strength 

of over a 100. Prizes were also given away to 

many in the audience for their participation 

in the random questions asked.

Baisakhi 

India Club celebrated “Baisakhi”, the 

harvest festival of Punjab on Thursday, 

1st April ‘10. 

BAISAKHI NITE 2010, the Punjabi 

festival of harvest, was ushered in with all the 

trappings of joy and splendour as revellers 

were treated to top class entertainment from 

Harpreet Deol and Apurva Shah of SA RE 

GA MA fame with Saira Khan, playback 

singer from Punjab. 

The singers were backed by a six piece 

live back-up band. 

Punjabis can trace their identity to a land 

of gaiety and merrymaking that is filling 

to the brim with the advent of festivals 

like “Baisakhi” when bumper crops bring 

happiness and prosperity to the land and 

the people. 

Besides the entertainment, the Club 

Members relished the authentic Punjabi 

Cuisine at the food courts. 

The associate sponsors of the event were

Do you often wondered what the value of each type 

of yoga position is All yoga positions help to develop 

strength and flexibility. Yet the type of yoga position 

that we all do in common also offers some very specific 

benefits. 

STANDING POSES 

They are included in many poses and they help to 

align your feet and body. This type of yoga position is 

especially useful in improving your posture. Standing 

poses strengthen your legs while simultaneously 

increasing flexibility in your legs and hips. They add 

to the mobility of your neck and shoulders and they 

increase the flexibility in your pelvis and lower back. One 

of the most basic standing poses is Mountain Pose. 

SEATED POSES 

These poses help increase flexibility in your hips and 

lower back, while also strengthening your back. They 

add suppleness to your spine and elasticity to your hips, 

knees, ankle and groin. They also encourage deeper 

breathing, which contributes to you feeling calm and 

peaceful. 

FORWARD BENDS 

This type of yoga position helps stretch your lower 

back and hamstrings. Forward bends also release tension 

in your back, neck, shoulders, and increase the flexibility 

in your spine. They often promote a sense of calmness. 

BACK BENDS 

They open your chest, rib cage, and hips. 

They strengthen your arms and shoulders, while 

simultaneously increasing flexibility in your shoulders. 

They help relieve tension from the front of your body and 

hips and they also increase spinal stability. You should 

always do back bends as a complement to forward bends 

in order to maintain balance in your body. 

BALANCE 

They help you develop muscle tone and coordination 

and also strength and agility. They help improve your 

posture because you really need to elongate your spine in 

order to keep yourself from falling over. This type of yoga 

position helps train your mind to focus your attention; 

if your attention if not focused, you will not be able to 

do the pose. 

TWISTS 

Twists release tension in your spine and increase 

shoulder and hip mobility. They also help relieve 

backaches by stretching and opening up your back 

muscles. 

SUPINE AND PRONE POSES 

Supine poses are done on your back. They help stretch 

your abdominal muscles, they open your hips, and

DAY 

Mother’s Day celebrations 

2010 were celebrated with great 

joy, on board the Sabi Boat Cruise 

down Dubai Creek 

on Tuesday, 27th April 2010. 

The two hour sunset sail on a beautiful breezy April 

evening was relaxing and 

refreshing for all the moms. 

A couple of housie games 

were played 

to entertain these Moms 

and plenty of 

prizes were given away. 

After enjoying some 

delicious snacks, both the 

young and the old took to 

the dance 

floor, displaying various skills 

and 

dancing abilities. 

As a tribute to motherhood, moms and 

grandoms, who came along, were given 

a return gift which were accepted 

with much joy and happiness. 0 

Love, Respect & Accept 

A 

Coffee Evening for ladies was held on 

Monday, 17th May 2010 from 6.00 to 

8.00 pm. 

A special documentary Love, Respect & 

Accept by Nitin Mitin was screened and 

presented by Gulshan Kavarana, who runs a 

special needs family support group. 

Mrs Gulshan has won the Princess 

Haya Award 2009 for ‘the best family’ in 

appreciation of her efforts to integrate special 

needs individuals and their families in the 

society. 

The function was well attended by members, 

students, teachers and principals. Mrs 

Sangeeta Verma and Mrs Saroj Thapa graced 

the function with their august presence. 0 


Saving 

Innocence 

Protect Childhood campaign is a first time 

awareness drive in Dubai, organized by 

the Dubai Foundation for Women and 

Children and ExHealth to address the issue 

of child abuse on a community level. It is an 

important topic but there is often great reluctance 

to talk about it. 

Miss Ancy Alexander from ExHealth 

introduced the campaign to a packed hall of ladies 

eager to know the effects an abused childhood 

on 21st April 2010. The keynote speaker on this 

occasion was Dr Saroj Thapa Professor Zayed 

University and President of SAATHI. Her talk 

was an eye opener to most of the ladies. 

Very often a caretaker or a relative may 

abuse the child. Parents should look for signs a 

sexually abused child might display. She further 

elaborated on how we could go about helping 

such children. 

The Chief Guest of the evening Mrs Sangeeta 

Matta Verma, wife of the Consul General of 

India, H.E. Mr Sanjay Verma also addressed the 

gathering. The talk was followed by the screening 

of the short film Arabana – a film stressing the 

need for diligence about protecting children, by 

celebrated film maker Ms. Nayla Al Khaja.

CORELDRAW 

workshop 

two day workshop was held at India Club for Logo and Business card 

A design in Corel Draw on 23 and 24th April 2010. 

The workshop covered basic tools of Corel Draw, concepts and guidelines 

of identity design, process in creating an identity and the difference between 

Raster and Vector files. 

The workshop attendees ranged from young students to adults, and the 

work featured self-create exercises based upon what the attendees learnt in 

the workshop. Many that attended the first workshop came to the second 

session with one logo already designed. All the attendees were enthusiastic to 

learn an entirely new subject and to have hands-on sessions of creating Logos 

for themselves and their respective businesses too. 

Although it was a new subject for many, the workshop conducted by Mr. 

Suhail Naz was designed to go at a steady pace to cover the maximum number 

of tools and provide rich knowledge into basic graphic design. 

Suhail Naz is a Dubai based graphic designer and photographer who has 

conducted many photography workshops and photoshop sessions too, at 

India club since 2008. 

The workshop was coordinated by Dr. Manu Mehta and, Mr. Thomas Jacob 

provided all technical assistance to create this workshop a success. 0 

BUDDING CHEFS 

A culinary 

workshop for children 

was conducted by Mrs 

Gahana Khatwani on the 5th 

April 2010. The kids got an 

opportunity to prepare 

an entire platter of food 

consisting 

of starters and mocktails. 

For starters Gahana taught 

them how to prepare sour 

cream and salsa dip that went 

well with nachos. 

The children made 

their own paneer footlong 

which was grilled and later 

washed down by an orange 

sunshine mocktail. A few 

enthusiastic kids purchased

India Club – Belhasa Projects LLC Annual 

The Swimming Gala 2010 was held on Friday, 

16th April. 

The event was sponsored by Belhasa Projects LLC. 

Over 100 young and old swimming enthusiasts 

participated in this Gala. 

The individual championships for boys was won 

by eleven year old Saurav A. Nair (Membership 

No. 4355) and individual championships for girls 

by was won by nine year old Miss. Bhairavi S. Dave 

(Membership No.4259). 

Miss. Belinda D’Souza set a new record of 15.09 

seconds in the 25 meters free style category for ladies 

in the age group of 18 - 40 years.

Honorary Chairman of India Club and Mr. Sunil Sawlani has 

been nominated as New Honorary Vice Chairman for the period 

2010 -2012 at a Board of Trustees meeting held on 29th May 2010. 

Mr. Siddharth Balachandran is the Managing Director of BUMGA while 

Mr. Sunil Sawlani is the Managing Director of ROYAL GARDENSCAPE & 

ROYAL CONCRETE PRODUCTS. 

An investiture ceremony was held to welcome the New India Club 

Chairman and Vice Chairman on 30th May ’10. 

H. E. Sanjay Verma, Consul General of India, Dubai and Patron of India 

Club presented mementos to the previous Executive Committee for the 

year 2006-2010, Mr. Sunil Singh (Chairman, India Club), Mr. Siddharth 

Balachandran (Vice Chairman, India Club), Mr. Mahendra Pancholia (Ex- 

Officio Chairman), Mr. Mohan Valrani (Advisor). 

Mr. Sunil Singh and Mr. Siddharth Balachandran presented mementos

welcome and felicitate the new Ambassador of India to 

the UAE, H. E. M. K. Lokesh on Monday, 10th May 2010. 

In his welcome address, Sunil Singh, Chairman of India 

Club welcomed the new Ambassador of India to the UAE on 

behalf of India Club Members and wished him a successful 

term in the UAE. 

During the function, H.E M. K. Lokesh, was presented 

with the India Club Membership card. He was also 

presented with the traditional shawl and a floral bouquet. 

H. E. M. K. Lokesh, in his address said that he was very 

much impressed with the facilities of the Club and also 

added that this was the best edifice of its kind he has seen 

outside India. He thanked the India Club Trustees for their 

efforts in bringing the Club to such high standards. The 

Ambassador said that the UAE has produced some high 

profile Indian businessmen, and that both the countries 

shared a very good socio-economic relationship since ages. 0

the Consul General of India, H.E. Sanjay Verma during 

the Investiture Ceremony held on May 31, 2010. 

The book, divided into various 

sections profiles the Board of Trustees 

of India Club, its facilities, the awards 

and recognitions and the dignitaries, 

statesmen, cultural icons, sports stars, 

entertainers who have visited the 

Club. 

The book was distributed to all 

MNC members. MNC members who 

have not received their copy of the 

book can collect it from the Club’s 

reception.

veteran cine artist Padmini Kolhapure 

and ably supported by the rest of the 

cast, Mahesh Thakur, Tina Parakh,

Suresh Singh, the play explored the 

very interesting relationships between 

mothers-in-law and daughters-in-law as 

they affect the rest of the family as well. 

Directed by Tushar Joshi the soul of 

the play had all the audience relating 

to it in some form or the other, and the 

extremely light-hearted play ended on a

Achieving Goals 

The Club participated in the 

My tree in Dubai campaign. 

As part of its Green policy, 

the Club and its members 

collected over 400 kgs of 

newspaper in a matter of 10 

days to be used for recycling. 

To appreciate the efforts of the 

Club, 5 trees were planted by 

the management team at the 

Mamzar Park in the name of 


Apart from our Green 

Policy the seeds of other 

philanthropic activities 

are also bearing fruit. 

The success of last years’ 

exhibition matches at the 

clubs’ Badminton tournament 

where special needs children 

participated, has encouraged 

us to go one step further and 

so, we have introduced a 

separate category for them in 

this years’ tournament where 

students from the Dubai 

Autism Centre and SNF have 

confirmed their participation. 

The entries have been 

encouraging enough for us to 

ensure we get more institutes 

involved in the tournament 

next year. 

It has been central to our 

policy of integrating special 

needs individuals and families 

with society which was 

aptly seen during the movie 

screening recently, as part 

of the ladies coffee evening. 

We have also been actively 

involved in promoting other 

causes – the prevention of 

child abuse where we tied up 

with the Dubai Foundation 

for Women and Saathi to raise 

awareness of this topic. 

Summer is at the doorstep 

but we have plans to ensure 

that we keep you on your toes 

– the much awaited Sports 

Camp with various packages 

for Indoor and Outdoor games 

will kick off in July as will the 

multi tasking activities for the 

kids in the Annual Summer 

Camp.

ur Club becomes a No – Smoking Zone. 

As an extension of the policy of promoting a healthy Atmosphere, all open 

areas within the Club’s premises have been converted into a No-Smoking Zone. 

Previously, smoking was not permitted within the Club’s buildings except in the 

bars – Madhushala & Splash. With the new policy, smoking will be not allowed in 

any of the open areas including the basketball courts, areas outside the Kids Play 

area, the tennis courts and the swimming pool areas. 

All members are requested to cooperate in implementing this policy to promote 

a healthier atmosphere.
