Induction into Distinguished Alumni Academies<br />

ACADEMY OF CHEMICAL<br />

ENGINEERS<br />

JAMES H LAUGHLIN, JR., BSCHE<br />

’64, earned a law degree from American<br />

University. He is a partner in the<br />

international law firm <strong>of</strong> Holland and<br />

Knight in Washington, DC. His<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essional career began in the Legal<br />

Division <strong>of</strong> the American Cynamid<br />

Company in Stamford, Connecticut.<br />

After seven years, he joined Xerox. Twelve<br />

years after receiving his bachelor’s degree,<br />

he entered the private practice <strong>of</strong> law in<br />

Washington, DC.<br />

RICHARD N. SMITH, BSCHE ’59,<br />

began his career with Goodrich-Gulf<br />

Chemicals, Thiokol and Celanese. He<br />

worked for Pfizer, a major producer <strong>of</strong><br />

pharmaceuticals, food chemicals, and<br />

industrial products, for 31 years in<br />

Connecticut, North Carolina and Ireland.<br />

While in Connecticut, he served on the<br />

Ledyard Board <strong>of</strong> Tax Review, Town<br />

Council, and Economic Development<br />

Commission.<br />

GREGORY S. BABE, BSME ’80, is<br />

president and CEO <strong>of</strong> Bayer<br />

MaterialScience – a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

worldwide Bayer Group, an international<br />

health care, nutrition, and innovative<br />

materials group. Babe has served as<br />

president and CEO <strong>of</strong> Bayer Corporate<br />

and Business Services, where he was<br />

responsible for providing expertise and<br />

support in engineering and other<br />

business services to Bayer Corporation<br />

and its affiliates. He is a member <strong>of</strong> the<br />

American Plastics Council Operating<br />

Board and chairs the board’s<br />

Membership Committee. He also is the<br />

executive sponsor <strong>of</strong> the Bayer Diversity<br />

Advisory Council and is on the Board <strong>of</strong><br />

Directors for the United Way <strong>of</strong> Western<br />

Pennsylvania.<br />

GHOSAL,<br />

MSCS ’88, is<br />

president and<br />

CEO <strong>of</strong> IntelliNet<br />

Technologies,<br />

which provides<br />

SS7 technology<br />

and consulting to<br />

leading<br />

application developers, vendors, and<br />

carriers worldwide. Ghosal founded<br />

IntelliNet Technologies in 1992. In 2002,<br />

he was recognized by Ernst & Young as<br />

the Entrepreneur <strong>of</strong> the Year in Florida<br />

for his contributions to the<br />

telecommunications industry. Ghosal<br />

earned his bachelor’s degree in chemical<br />

engineering from the Indian Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

Technology in India, in 1985. He lives in<br />

Melbourne, Florida.<br />

DAVID KIRBY,<br />

BSCS ’75, is<br />

Consulting in<br />

Durham, North<br />

Carolina,<br />

providing<br />

information technologies in health care.<br />

Kirby led the development <strong>of</strong> Duke<br />

Medical Center’s first in-house electronic<br />

health records systems, helped develop<br />

the first and second generations <strong>of</strong> the<br />

Duke Medical Center backbone network,<br />

directed the TeleHealth <strong>of</strong>fice, established<br />

and directed the Center for Information<br />

Technology Innovation, and established<br />

and directed Duke’s Information Security<br />

Office. Kirby earned a master’s degree in<br />

computer science from the University <strong>of</strong><br />

North Carolina in 1982.<br />

WATERS,<br />

BSEE ’87, is<br />

executive vice<br />

president and<br />

chief technology<br />

<strong>of</strong>ficer for Level 3<br />

Communications,<br />

a Denver-based<br />

provider <strong>of</strong> integrated communications<br />

services, including voice, private line,<br />

wavelengths, co-location, Internet access,<br />

managed modem, data, and dark fiber. In<br />

2004, the company acquired the<br />

wholesale dial access business <strong>of</strong> ICG<br />

Communications, providing dial-up<br />

Internet access to America Online,<br />

Earthlink, MSN, United Online, and<br />

other Internet service providers. Mr.<br />

Waters was an executive staff member<br />

responsible for the architecture, design,<br />

and implementation <strong>of</strong> MCI and<br />

Concert’s Internet Services. He also<br />

helped design and build MCI’s original<br />

Internet service.<br />
