Francis Miller was born in 1796 at a farm called Steppings near the village of Bewcastle, Cumberland, England
2
to Gideon Miller and his second wife, Isabella Scott, and later baptized at the "Scotch Church" of Bewcastle,
Knowe Presbyterian. Bewcastle is situated in the northern part of Cumberland only a few miles from the Scottish
border. The borders were a region troubled for centuries by warfare and unrest with raiding back and forth by the
so called reivers or riding clans (including the Kerrs and the Elliots), and though savagely "pacified" by James I,
continued to be a region avoided by travelers if possible.
The fact that the Millers belonged to the "Scotch Church" may be significant, as Francis and his sister,
Eleanor, marry what appear to be another sister and brother, Mary and Robert Kerr, from Castleton, a few miles
north of the Scottish border, with Francis's marriage most likely taking place in Castleton, while Eleanor's is
celebrated in Bewcastle. Another sister, Margaret, married a man named Ballantyne also from the Castleton side.
Francis and Mary Kerr's first known children are born at Castleton, while the latter ones are born after the Miller
family has moved to Hawick, another 15 miles or so further north into Roxburghshire. What precipitated the
moves from Bewcastle to Castleton to Hawick is unknown. Whether these were natural routes that shepherds
followed or whether family connections or opportunity underlay these moves is not known. Two of Francis's sons,
Gideon and John, were blacksmiths, so perhaps this was a family occupation which caused them to move.
Per Francis Miller's declaration for naturalization, he emigrated to the United States in 1837 through the port
of Liverpool. It is believed that his entire family sailed with him, including his oldest daughter, Isabella, along
with her new husband, James Oliver. It is also believed the family originally settled in the Coulter Brook section
of Bovina, though after Francis is widowed and remarries Jennett , he moves to Andes and per the Beers map of
Delaware County appears to be living in Gladstone Hollow just outside the village. In almost every census return,
Francis identifies himself as a native of Scotland but his tombstone identifies him as a native of England.
Living close by in both Bovina and Andes are the representatives of another Miller family from Hawick, the
children of Thomas Miller and Isabella Laidlaw, who are well documented by David Hoy, Fletcher Davidson, and
most recently Ray LaFever. There is no obvious connection between the family of Francis Miller and these other
Millers but some kind of kinship could of course be possible.
Notes for MARY KERR:
Mary Kerr is presumed to be the unnamed woman, 40-50 years of age enumerated with Francis Miller in the
town of Bovina, Delaware County, New York. I have not yet located Francis Miller's return for the 1850 census,
though one can deduce that if Mary Kerr Miller is the woman reported in the 1840 census, then she most likely
accompanied her family when they emigrated from Scotland to Bovina in 1837. Though it seems logical that she
is a sister to Robert Kerr of Castleton (Where her first several children are born), who married her husband,
Francis Miller's sister, Eleanor, it is not proven as no death record has been found for her. She may likely be the
Mary Kerr, who per the IGI was born in 1791 to Walter Kerr in Cavers, Roxburgh, which would make her about
five years older than her husband, but again this is not proven. However, according to the Scottish naming
pattern, her second son should be named Walter and he is indeed named Walter Kerr Miller.
If most of the above proves correct, it would appear that Mary Kerr Miller dies in either Bovina or Andes
between 1840-1855, which is roughly when her husband, Francis, remarries a widow, Jennett , a native of
Scotland born c1814 and the mother of Mrs. Mary Glendenning of Andes.
Notes for JOHN FAIRBAIRN:
Per his application for a pension for his service in the Union army during the American Civil War, John
Fairbairn indicates that he was born in Roxburgh, Scotland, while his death certificate from the Town of
Hardenburgh indicates his place of birth as Edinburgh. However, since he himself would have supplied the
information for the pension application, Roxburgh is the more likely birthplace of the two. His death certificate
indicates that his father was Walter Fairbairn, which would indicate that John employed the traditional Scottish
naming pattern in calling his first son, Walter, after his paternal grandfather and his second son, Francis Miller,
after his maternal grandfather. Unfortunately, John's mother's name is not given on the death record.
Our John Fairbairn fits nicely into the line of a Walter Fairbairn and Agnes Robertson of Morebattle,
Roxburghshire, Scotland, being researched by Lorna McIntosh of New Zealand . There is a gap in the known
children of Walter and Agnes which would accommodate John's birth date in the year 1812. Likewise, it would
make him Walter and Agnes's second son, who according to the Scottish naming pattern for children should be
named John after Agnes's father, John Robertson. In this family group, given names like Walter, James, David,
and Archibald are found as in the New York Fairbairns but they are also common Scottish names of the period.
Currently, no definitive proof of this relationship has been discovered but perhaps some obituary or legal
document will yet be unearthed.
John Fairbairn's precise time of emigration is also unknown although he is in Bovina, Delaware County, NY
by 1841, when he marries Elizabeth Miller. She was born in Castleton and was later of Hawick, both towns in
Roxburghshire. She emigrated from Scotland with her parents and siblings in 1837, settling on Coulter Brook in
Bovina. While the towns of Bovina and Andes were filled with Scots from the border counties at that time, there
seem to have been no other Fairbairns besides John, unless there was an unknown already married Fairbairn
sister. Whether John and his wife, Elizabeth Miller, were acquainted in Scotland is likewise unknown. John and
Elizabeth's first two sons, Walter (1842) and Francis M. (1844) were both born in Bovina. However, per the
family bible and family lore, as well as indicated in later census records, their third son, Jarvis B., was born on the
Atlantic Ocean in 1846. By family tradition, the family was en route to resettle in Texas when Jarvis was born on
board a British ship and named after the ship's captain, but the birth was not registered in the ship's log until after
it had sailed once again into American waters. Whether this story is accurate or not should be investigated a bit
further. Why would the family have been moving west to Texas during or immediately after the Mexican-
American war Why would the family have sailed on a British ship between NY and Texas Might the family
have returned to Scotland and were in fact in the process of sailing back to the states when the birth occurred,
which might then explain their passage on a British ship.
By 1849, the Fairbairns were back in Delaware County when their son, James E. is born in Middletown
(believed to be in the New Kingston valley, where Elizabeth's brother Gideon also rents a house and blacksmith
shop around the same time). During the 1840's, I also believe their two oldest sons, Walter and Francis' names
appear on the register of the Stone School House at Dunraven. From 1850 onwards, they seem to have resided in
that part of the Town of Shandaken in Ulster County which would later be set aside as the Town of Hardenburgh,
5
namely the Dry Brook and Millbrook valleys. Hence the Fairbairn Bible records John F. (1852), Nelson G.
(1854), and George G. (1856) as being born in Shandaken, while the youngest, William H. (1862) as born in
Hardenburgh.
When John Fairbairn applies for his pension, he gives his address as Belleayre, Ulster County, NY. In the
1880 census, Town of Hardenburgh, John and Elizabeth Fairbairn are listed as a household with their unmarried
sons Jarvis, George, and William H., along with their son James, his wife, Mary, and their children, Rachel,
Francis M., and Nelson. Since Jame's daughter, Rachel is known to have been born in a house later purchased and
expanded by George Jay Gould, it may well be that at the time of the 1880 census, the family was residing in that
house now known as Flyvaal and currently part of the Gould's Furlow estate in Seager.
John's application for a Civil War pension makes for interesting reading. He is described as having a dark
complexion and dark eyes. He attests that he was mustered at Elmira, where he became ill with typhoid fever after
having to sleep on a cold floor without bedding and subsequently losing an eye to that illness. However, the army
contests that he was discharged because he claimed to be forty years of age when in fact he was over fifty at the
time of his enlistment. John also claims that he has suffered from respiratory problems or chronic bronchitis ever
since becoming ill in Elmira and is unable to do much work. There are affidavits in support of his claim from
