The Hult family is comprised of Erik the father, Anna the mother, Olle
their son and Ida, their daughter. They have a third child on the way.
Another part of the family are Anna’s parents, Berit and Kalle.
FAMILY LIVING
The Hult family lives in the countryside and they get
their water from a well. Since they are expecting
a baby, they can have their well water analysed at
the municipality’s expense if they want to. They will
probably need to expand their house as well. In that
case, they can turn to the city’s planning office for
good advice on any expansions. The planning office
can also help them with finding ways to heat their
entire house in an environment-friendly and climatesound
manner, for example using solar cells.
No, in the end, this family prefers to build a new house.
However, they need to decide if they want to build
it in town or out in the countryside. Either way, the
municipality offers plots that have already been zoned,
as well as several areas earmarked for rural development.
When Anna wakes up in the morning, she
presses a switch, turning on a lamp that gives a mild
and pleasant shine. The radiator is warm and cosy.
Knowing that the heat supplied by their utility Emmaboda
Energi och Miljö AB comes from non-polluting,
non-fossil fuels makes it feel even better. She walks
into the bathroom. She often reminds herself of how
lucky she is to have clean and well-tasting water, as
well as someone who takes care of the waste water
from her bath, laundry and dishes. She throws the
leftovers from breakfast in the trash and takes the
garbage bag with her to the bin in the courtyard as
she leaves for work.
That’s when she realises what a great society she lives
in. “I have electricity, clean water and someone
else takes care of my waste water and garbage.” It’s
great! All of these services are provided to her family,

On her way to work, Anna drops by Möjligheternas Hus
AB and the recycling station. She knows that there are
nice objects on her trailer that can be sold in their
giant second hand shop. She’s found plenty of bargains
there herself. Möjligheternas Hus AB (MHAB) is a
company that takes the subjects of the environment
and recycling seriously, combining them with employment
opportunities for people with special needs. In
MHAB’s view, one person’s garbage is another person’s
opportunity to re-use and sell things. The company’s
second hand shop contributes to a better environment,
while their revenue is reinvested in the business
and the people who work there.

EMPLOYMENT
Both Erik and Anna work for the municipality. The
business environment in Emmaboda is a fine mixture
of small and large companies, such as ITT Water &
Wastewater and Emmaboda Glas, which is part of the
Saint-Gobain group, as well as small and medium-sized
companies. You can find a great deal of manufacturing
companies as well as cottage industries with high
professional specialisation in metallurgy, woodworking
and glassworks. Tourism is also a growing business in
the area that provides many job opportunities.
However, Anna wants to start her own trading company.
More and more people are discovering the advantages
of free parking and Emmaboda’s central location in
the region. In order to provide Anna’s company with
the best possible opportunities, the municipality and
the “Centrum Sydost” chamber of commerce arrange
regular gatherings for business networking in which
businessmen, politicians and public officials can meet
and exchange views and experiences. The municipality
also arranges courses in starting your own business
in collaboration with “Centrum Sydost”. As a female
entrepreneur, Anna can also participate in the Q-net
network that now and then arranges interesting seminars
and other happenings.
The municipality of Emmaboda is a large employer and
offers job opportunities in approximately 200 different
professions.

SCHOOL
Olle and Ida go to school in the municipality. No matter
the age group, the school system is characterised
by cooperation, the big picture and availability. When
their children were toddlers, they were offered places
at pre-school less than a month after applying. The
municipality’s schools, pre-schools and after-school
recreation centres for junior school children all work
with social and emotional coaching, which bolsters
parents’ confidence in them. All of the municipality’s
educational areas can boast pre-schools and schools
with individual profiles, which allows children to follow
their interests when choosing: for example, the
Vissefjärda school has a cultural profile which suits
Ida perfectly. Renovation of this school was finished
in 2008, making it one of the country’s most modern
schools with bright, cheery classrooms and modern
equipment. For the smaller children, all of the preschools
have “open pre-schools” for parents on parental
leave and for children who are not enrolled in
the pre-school system. This suits the family well in
anticipation of their new arrival.
In every school, children have access to a good school
library. Children also learn to swim at school. Swimming
and swimming schools are free of charge for all
students in the municipality.
Olle and Ida have been able to influence their schooling
by participating in the municipality’s annual
children and youth council. The school council contributes
100,000 crowns per school year to the children
and youth council, which together decides how this
money is to be distributed and spent, for example on
new soccer balls or an outdoor concert.
Emmaboda invests a great deal in their secondary
school, where Olle is a senior. Vilhelm Mobergsgymnasiet
is a small secondary school that offers flexible
solutions for students who are studying the engineering,
natural science, social science and industrial
programmes.
Olle is attending the industrial programme, which
provides him with qualified industrial-technical training
in very modern facilities, using advanced technical
equipment. This programme has a unique collaboration
with the company ITT Water & Wastewater
AB. Some of the classrooms are even located on the
company’s premises! Both the industrial and the engineering
programmes are a part of “Teknikcollege Sydost”,
the Southeast technical college, and both offer
certified training. The industrial programme has
won an award for “Technical training of the year” at
the secondary level. Anna is a sports buff and she is
very happy that the soccer players (Swedish champions
and national team members) Rasmus, Victor and
David Elm all feel that the Vilhelm Mobergsgymnasiet
school is the right choice for them. The school combines
rigorous training with challenging studies.
In order to ensure healthy growth in entrepreneurship,
the municipality’s commerce bureau collaborates
with the schools and the Young Enterprise organisation
(Ung Företagsamhet). The college center
allows both mom and dad to conduct distance learning
and study courses without having to leave the
municipality.

A HOME OF ONE’S OWN
Olle will be graduating from school this year and has
already begun to consider moving to his own place.
Emmaboda Bostads AB (EBA) is a completely owned
municipal company that manages 932 apartments and
14,500 square metres of commercial premises and
shops.
EBA is continually building and developing new as well
as existing apartments and premises. With EBA, the
youngsters in the family can find housing that boasts
stable, low rent combined with high quality, security
and service. In collaboration with Emmaboda Energi
och Miljö AB, EBA offers its tenants a broadband network

Erik feels that the children’s way to school should be
better illuminated, so he contacts his local politicians.
For Emmaboda’s elected officials, the democratic
process is very important and they do their best
to enable a dialogue with their citizens. Anybody who
has something to say should be able to state their

opinion. At certain meetings, the city council invites
the public to an open forum, where anyone can ask
questions directly to the council. Erik goes to one of
these meetings and asks questions. This results in the
family authoring a citizens’ motion for more street
lighting. Being able to influence is great!
EXCELLENT LOCATION
After work, Anna gets a call from a good friend who
wants to move to Emmaboda and maybe start her own
company. Here’s a chance for these two women to
start a business together!
Anna explains why her friend should move to Emmaboda.
“With exactly 57 kilometres to Kalmar, Växjö
or Karlskrona, Emmaboda is perfectly located in the
centre of Southeast Sweden.” Located at comfortable
commuting distance from the region’s three main cities,
the family has access to a jobs market employing
over 30,000 people and with 300,000 potential customers.
If you’ve set your horizons further, it’s no problem
at all. Their children can easily visit friends in
Copenhagen or receive visitors from Göteborg, or why
not Spain
Anna asks the municipality’s office for new inhabitants
to get in touch with her friend so that she can receive
a personal package with information about the municipality
before the move.

LEISURE
Their children have a wide range of after-school activities
to choose from. Emmaboda’s youth recreation
centre is run by the municipality and is open three
evenings a week. They also have well-developed holiday
activities that include field trips and camps.
All the other recreation centres are run by private
associations and are open a few evenings per week.
Children can hang out with both friends and adults at
these centres.
In the municipality, the family has their choice among
180 active associations. For example, they can visit
the municipal pool and workout centre. There are
also a number of great indoor sports facilities as well
as a newly finished field with artificial grass. The family
can also go to Nöjeshuset, where they, among
other things, can go bowling, work out in the gym,
drive go-carts or shoot air guns.
CULTURAL SCHOOL AND
GO ON (SDAG)
The children in the family are active students in
Emmaboda’s public cultural schools. They each play
an instrument and sing. At school, they can also study
cinema, musical techniques and drama. The cultural
school is open for all of Emmaboda’s citizens
and there are no age restrictions. Every Wednesday
they meet up with their friends at a unique venture
called Go on (sdag). Here, they can learn to dance,
make movies or jam with their band. Go on (sdag) is
open for everyone in Emmaboda and is a joint-venture
between various municipal operations, the youth
recreation centre, Nöjeshuset, Emmaboda Folkets
Hus, Allaktivitetshus, Skatehallen as well as a number
of associations and various businesses. Every Wednesday
until 9 PM, people can partake of a large number
of cultural, entertainment and sports activities and
events. Everyone is welcome to participate. Furthermore,
on these Wednesdays, there are free buses to
bring people to and from Emmaboda. Children with
disabilities can also participate and learn through art,
music and drama. On these Wednesdays, the library
in Emmaboda is also open until 9 PM. Almost every
week, the library is brimming with various activities,
meetings with authors, story-telling cafés, book clubs
and film viewings.
The activities at Go On (sdag) are also open for
adults.

SUN AND A SEA BREEZE
FOR NEXT OF KIN
Grandma Berit is at home, taking care of Grandpa Kalle,
who is ill. Berit is a regular visitor to the activity
centres that can be found here and there around the
municipality.
On top of that, she can relax in an unusual way: Being
next of kin to someone who is ill, she has the opportunity
to get find strength and boost her spirits through
a relaxing break in the Mauritius Sunshine Paradise
experience room. The room gives her a holistic experience
by stimulating all of her senses. She steps right
onto a sandy beach where the temperature is about
28 degrees Celsius (82 Fahrenheit). She sits down in a
sun chair and can feel the sand between her toes as
she listens to the lapping of waves and birdsong and
feels a cool sea breeze.
Berit can also use the workout and relaxation room.
In this room, she can do some careful weight training
on a vibrating disc or enjoy a moment’s relaxation in
a massage chair.
Berit sometimes brings a younger friend with her to
her Sunshine Paradise. Both she and everyone else
who is interested are welcome to experience this
room for a small fee.

LIBRARY
The family are regular visitors to Emmaboda’s libraries.
They are some of the best libraries in Sweden.
With their exhibitions and wide range of various media
and activities, these libraries function as meeting
places where everyone is welcome. You can also order
books from anywhere in Sweden, free of charge!
The family can choose to borrow books at any of the
branches in Emmaboda, Boda, Eriksmåla, Johansfors,
Lindås, Långasjö or Vissefjärda. No matter where you
live, there’s always a library nearby!

SECURITY
Later in the evening, the parents join the night patrol
which is called Nattvakten. Nattvakten is a group of
volunteers who patrol an area to keep an eye on things
and report any suspicious activities. The patrolling
vehicle is in contact with other Nattvakten vehicles,
security guards (Securitas) and the Police command
centre. Very often, they also collaborate with Emmaboda
Nattvandrare, foot-patrolling volunteers.
But it’s not just volunteers that make Emmaboda a
safer place. The municipality has signed a collaborative
agreement with the police which underlines the
importance of collaboration and mutual preventive
work. The social and family services’ personnel in the
field also play a very important role in this ambition.
They focus their work on youths and their parents.
The social and family services offer tailor-made support
to young people aged 13-23. By working with the
bigger picture, they can provide help in both the short
and the long run. Parents often see their preventive
work out in the field. The “field workers” can be found
where young people are, such as festivals and other
events. That provides a sense of security.

SOMETHING FOR EVERY
VISITOR
The family is planning their weekend together and Erik
chooses to visit the glassworks in Boda, Åfors and Johansfors.
These all lie within the municipality and are
a part of “Glasriket” (the Kingdom of Crystal). At the
crystal museum next door to the glassworks in Johansfors,
the family can learn about the manufacturing of
glass at the works during the 20th century, working
with well-known designers like Bengt Orup, Ingegerd
Råman as well as Margareta and Erik Hennix.
Erik is also a literature and history buff. He takes his
family to Vilhelm Moberg’s Duvemåla, where they
enjoy a cup of coffee. They continue on to Moberg’s
birthplace, Moshultamåla, and visit Klasatorpet,
which is the house that his literary figures Karl-Oskar
and Kristina left when they moved to America in the
movie “The Emigrants”. On their way home, they visit
Vissefjärda. Erik tells his family about the Dacke rebellion,
which took place here in 1543.
This rebellion occurred as a result of grievances against
the king Gustav Vasa and was led by Nils Dacke.
When the sun is shining, Ida and Erik enjoy a round
of golf at the Emmaboda golf course. Olle likes nature
and takes the family out fishing on one of the
municipality’s hundred lakes. The family can travel by
various bicycle or canoe routes, both on land and by
water. In the summertime, Olle enjoys visiting the different
festivals in Emmaboda, especially the famous
Emmabodafestivalen. Anna and Erik never miss any
of the regular motoring events, such as A day at the
strip.
Ida likes music and brings the whole family to Emmaboda
Folkets hus to enjoy a high-quality, live broadcast
from The Metropolitan Opera in New York City.
Every time the jazz club arranges jazz soirées, you’ll
