HQ Nationals 2012
Victoria will be hosting the 2012 HQ Nationals which will be held at
Sandown on June 16 & 17, during our Round 3.
We are currently doing a lot of planning and negotiating to make this
one of the best Nationals events we can produce. It actually
coincides with the 50 th anniversary of the iconic Sandown Raceway
history as well..
All this work, organising and logistics needs a lot of time and effort
to make this event what it can be… the highlight of the 2012 HQ
Racing calendar. Also raising enough funds to give our interstate
travellers a helping hand in joining us at this annual event and make
it a real ‘showdown’ between all the states as well.
We are offering 100 x “Red Tickets” where the winning ticket will
have the exclusive opportunity of becoming the ‘Premier’ HQ
Nationals Sponsor for 2012.. this is a glimpse of what benefits it
will bring:
• Windscreen banners on ALL competing cars with your
logo/name across it.
• Sole naming rights of the event.. the ‘your name’ 2012 HQ
Nationals goes to……”
• HQ website advertising for balance 2012..
• VIP access to pit areas with space for ‘promotion’ tent etc..
Plus plenty more…
Imagine potentially receiving all this for $100!! (or worst case
donating your $100 to a great event!)… each ‘red’ ticket sold
receives an individual memorial certificate of appreciation.
Submit your confirmation on line at
http://www.hqracingvic.org/red-ticket.html ... see website list for
available numbers under the Red Ticket Donation banners...
Once they are gone.. they are gone.. we will draw the winner at our
general meeting on the 5 th June 2012.. good luck!
P.S. please forward this info to as many businesses/friends that
maybe also interested in this exciting promotion… thank you.

Vice-President’s Report – Round 1 “Dallas Crane Challenge”
What a great weekend of racing at Winton to kick off our 2012
season. Great weather both days helped complete the
package.
It was good to see all the cars with our sponsors' stickers on
them. The whole field looked great - a credit to all drivers.
It was good too to have Mark Craig there doing a great job
checking all the cars.
Being the Dallas Crane Memorial Challenge, Rob Southouse
sponsored the trophies. Thanks Rob for your support.
A big thank you must go to Ken Wright for helping to organise
magnificent trophies for our events.
Mitch Grant from Highway Tyres came on Sunday and was very
impressed with what he saw. Mitch has been working very hard
on making the buffing of the tyres better and has really made
great improvements. Ken had Kenda tyres on his car at the
weekend and they performed really well. Wear factor was
minimal and we were very happy with how the car handled.
Club trailer sales were good with over $700.00 collected for the
weekend.
Hope all club members have a great year. Your committee will
keep working to take our club forward to bigger and better
things.
HQ 4 Hour, 20 Years
In 2012, we will celebrate the 20 th Year of the HQ 4 Hour Endurance Race, now known as
the “Ken Leigh Memorial 4 Hour”.
As a build-up to this years’ running of the event, members of the club have offered to provide
an insight into the event and Ken Leigh himself. This edition of the Newsletter hosts the first
installment, Ken Leigh and his racing history.
A big ‘Thank-You’ to Graham Boulter for providing photos and text.
Who was Ken Leigh?
Like most of us, Ken loved to bag the Poms. The trouble with that
Is, he was one, arriving in Adelaide at a young age, probably on the
Ten Quid Plan. He came from a very clever family, his Dad John
was setting up the computers at British Tube Mills in the 60’s…
before most of us knew that they existed, and his brother David
was even smarter, a fact that Ken didn’t really enjoy.
Ken and I became mates after meeting at Grange Beach. I was
around 19, and he a couple of years younger, we both had Austin A40 ‘Somersets’ or as Ken called
them “Somersaults”. Even then Ken had another name for everyone and everything. I was Granite
Balls (from G.B.)
As an apprentice fitter and turner Ken learned about “stuff” very quickly and developed his A40 into
what the boys call a “sleeper”…Hot MGB spec engine with a Weber, hand built extractors, Singer
gearbox, fully adjustable front suspension, lowered springs front and rear, 6x13 wheels with Pirellis,
and all his own work. It was seriously fast and he frightened the crap out of us on many occasions.

Around 1968 came the Morris Minor sports sedan, his first race
car again with a B Series engine and a quick little car. Around
this time Ken was working for Globe Products with Kevin Drage
(ex Repco Brabham engineer) and gathered a wealth of
knowledge, helping with the development of the Globe Escort
and running the engine dyno.
I am happy to admit that Ken was the “brains” behind my FJ
which he developed to be fast enough to hold the category
record at Mallala in 1972. Ken moved to Head Mod in
Melbourne and again learning news skills. Returning to
Adelaide, Ken went on to be a regular competitor and a
stalwart in Sports Sedans.
Moving back to Melbourne with long term partner Wendy
Bray, Ken moved into HQ Racing soon after it’s beginning in
1988. During his years in HQ racing he raced Thunderdome and Circuit, built cars for himself and
other competitors, became a recognised engine builder and served in various roles on the HQRA
Vic committee. He was a very uncompromising competitor…whether on the track or off.
Ken was a very strong advocate of the
annual Victorian Enduro and when he
succumbed to cancer some???????????
years ago the event was fittingly named the
Ken Leigh 4 Hour.
Family Fun/Presentation Day
2012 Fun Presentation Family day –Gippsland Car club
On Sunday 19 th February, our HQRA Vic club held its Fun, Family and Presentation day
in Yallourn, Gippsland.
With the weather kind to us, our club attracted 9 HQs plus other cars including the club
car and nearly 100 people down to the Gippsland Car club hill climb facility at Yallourn.
The club room facility and track were presented in A1 condition. What an outstanding
venue that we were privileged to enjoy.
John Bryant, President of the Gippsland Car club, and his committee team were fine
hosts for our event. The canteen catering and refreshment team were so hospitable and
welcoming to all our attendees. Thank you to them all from our club. Without their
support and assistance, this day would not have been possible or enjoyable.
The actual track layout proved to be challenging, daunting and exhilarating all in a matter
of seconds for both the driver and the many passengers.
Many runs were held from 9.00 in the morning to 3.00 in the afternoon. 9 HQs plus other
vehicles, including a GTR, were used throughout the day. Drivers swapped and loaned
their cars to each other as we had 15 club drivers there on the day.
It was great to see Tony Maloney and James Kenna and his family come all the way from
outback Mortlake (4+ hours each way) attend and drive Dave Peter’s new car !! That
was a lot of driving just to attend and reflects the spirit and commitment of some of our
members.
Rod Raatjes and John Wise both brought friends and their crew members and gladly
assisted with driving any HQ cars that they were offered throughout the day. They did
plenty of driving during the day.
Many younger and potential club members were driven around the track by club
members. The ride was certainly a thrill for both the drivers and passengers.
Eddie Woods was seen behind the wheel again - “never say never Eddie”. It is believed
that this could be the start of a comeback ?? Ol’55 ----
Wayne Manhken was seen with a helmet on and coming off the track too – “never before
---- and now never again”. He was seen to enjoy himself. It is not too late!!!!
Bob and Ken Wright organised the track and officiated throughout the day ably assisted
by Dave Peters, Mark McDonald, Warren Trewin and the list of volunteers ”goes on and
on”. Thank you to you all. Dave Amore conducted scrutineering with many onlookers to
ensure compliance of all competing vehicles.
A special thank you to Linda Brown “and the Brown girls” for fulfilling the administrative
duties with entries, licences and ride paperwork.

Family Fun/Presentation Day

Round 1 – Winton
‘Dallas Crane Challenge”
Winton March 10 & 11
Winton Round 1.
We opened our season with round 1 at Winton. The Winton weather was absolutely ideal,
approximately 25 degrees each day. This facility offered a good dry track which allowed for
close, competitive quality HQ racing.
The turn-out of new colour schemes, new competitors and new club sponsors reflected in
the spirit and mateship amongst the competitors.
Kenda’s Mitch Grant was on hand to support their brand and our club.
Mark Craig ably assisted all competitors as Technical support for our category. We
welcome him back to the club and appreciate his assistance to ensure that all cars are
meeting the regulated specifications. This is a great benefit to us all and hopefully Mark is
available for the season.
Simon Taylor, a local lad and new member from Wodonga joined the HQ field and debuted
in his HQ. His beaming smile all weekend seemed to reflect his enjoyment. Rod Vervoort
showed plenty of form and speed in his return to the track. Matt George returned to the
track and has plans to compete regularly this season.
Mark Moore, Principal of CV Centre, was our Round 1 sponsor. Mark presented his trophy
to the round winner, Ken Wright. He also presented Chris Collins, who showed his
immaculately prepared race car in “almost concourse condition”, with the “Best Presented”
award. Despite stiff opposition from nearly all other competitors, including Warren Trewin,
Mark Tessari and Dave Peters, it was Chris who took out the award. The standard
improves yet again with car presentation.
Qualifying
At the end of the 20 min qualifying session, Carl McHenry took out pole position, closely
followed by Stephen Whyte on second, third was John Wood followed by Chris Collins in
the immaculately presented CV Centre car in 4 th . Ken Wright rounded out the top 5.

Round 1 – Winton cont..
Race 1 saw a first corner incident between John Wood and Stephen Whyte which
unfortunately caused Stephen to be turned around losing many positions. Steve was able
to re-join, working his way back through some of the crowd. Chris Collins also had a poor
start due to his gear selector jamming in 1 st . At the end of the 6 lap curtain raiser to the
weekend, John Wood took out the win from Carl McHenry and Ken Wright following in 3 rd
position.
Race 2 was the longest event for the weekend being a 10 lap journey. It was a close
battle at the front of the field, you could have thrown a blanket over the top 4 cars. Ken
Wright managed to snare the lead on lap 3 and went on to take the victory, the first for
Kenda Tires. Carl McHenry followed closely in 2 nd with John Wood finishing 3 rd . There
was close racing right throughout the field, even the tussle for positions at the tail end
were hotly contested.
Race 3, The Dallas Crane Challenge and 8 lap sprint was by far the closest race of the
weekend at the front. Ken Wright & Carl McHenry led the pack away, running side by side
from the start line right through until turn 3 with no contact being made. Unfortunately,
Carl’s rear brakes were too attracted to the drums and locked themselves on forcing Carl
into an infield spin. Ken Wright led up until the 7 th lap where John & Scott Wood along
with Stephen Whyte managed their way past in the space of two corners. However,
heading into turn 10 the 3 of them found themselves locked together nose to tail with all
cars running wide and off the edge of the circuit. This handed the lead back to Ken. In the
end it was Ken Wright with his second win of the weekend, Scott Wood second and John
Wood third.
Round winners
The Dallas Crane Challenge – Ken Wright
Division 1 – 1 st Place – Ken Wright Division 2 – 1 st Place – Tony
Moloney
Division 1 – 2 nd Place – Scott Wood Division 2 – 2 nd
Place – Jason Bell
Division 1 – 3 rd Place – Stephen Whyte Division 2 – 3 rd
Place – Rod Vervoort
Trophy presentations for our club round 1 award were held at the conclusion of the event.
The club competitors who enjoyed the spoils of their success, and received their hardearned
trophies, were glowing with their praise and support of the sponsors and club.
Well done to all he competitors. To those who were not able to attend, please get your car
out and enter at round 2 at Phillip Island. We encourage all the club competitors to enter,
compete and enjoy yourselves. See you at round 2.
The New Humour Section
Paddy McCoy, an elderly Irish farmer, received a letter from the Irish
Revenue stating that they suspected he was not paying his employees
the statutory minimum wage and they would send an inspector to interview
them. On the appointed day, the inspector turned up. "Tell me about your
staff," he asked Paddy. "Well," said Paddy, "there's the farm hand, I pay
him $340 a week, and he has a free cottage.
Then there's the housekeeper. She gets $290 a week, along with free
board and lodging. There's also the half-wit. He works a 16 hour day,
does 90% of the work, earns about $25 a week along with a bottle of
whisky and, as a special treat, occasionally gets to sleep with my wife."
"That's disgraceful" said the inspector, "I need to interview the half-wit."
"That'll be me then," said Paddy.
I was listening to the radio this morning when the host invited callers to reveal the nicknames they had
for their wives. Best call was from the chap who called his wife Harvey Norman ...
“No interest for 24 months”
Two old guys, one 90 and one 87, were sitting on a park bench one morning.
The 90 year-old had just finished his morning jog and wasn't even short
of breath. The 87 year-old was amazed at the guy's stamina and asked
him what he did to have so much energy. The 90-year-old said, "Well, I
eat rye bread every day. It keeps your energy level high and you'll have
great stamina with the ladies."
So, on the way home the 87-year-old stops at the bakery. As he was
looking around, the lady asked if he needed any help. He said,
"Do you have any rye bread?“ She said, "Yes, there's a whole shelf of it.
Would you like some?“ He said, "I want 5 loaves."
She said, "My goodness, 5 loaves ... By the time you get to the 3rd loaf, it'll be hard."
He replied, "I can't believe it, everybody knows about this shit but me."
Two Irishmen flew to Canada on a hunting trip. They chartered a small plane to take them into the
Rockies for a week hunting moose. They managed to bag 6. As they were loading the plane to return,
the Pilot said the plane could take only 4 moose. The two lads objected strongly. "Last year we shot
six. The pilot let us take them all and he had the same plane as yours”. Reluctantly, the pilot gave in
and all six were loaded. The plane took off, however, while attempting to cross some mountains, even
on full power, the little plane couldn't handle the load and went down.
Somehow, surrounded by the moose bodies, only Paddy and Mick survived the crash.
After climbing out of the wreckage, Paddy asked Mick, "Any idea where we are?"
Mick replied, "I think we're pretty close to where we crashed last year."
