Midget Midget Rookie Rookie Junior Junior Camp
Camp
As reported in our first newsletter of the year, the
Midget Rookie Junior camp was scheduled to run on
the 16 th and 17 th of January. The camp,
which was run by the AKA SA and
hosted by the Southern Go-kart club, has
been hailed a huge success by
attendees and organizers alike.
After the initial formalities, instructor Peter Woodgate
kicked off proceedings by taking the 33 boys and girls
for a track walk and then divided them into their
appropriate classes.
The Midgets, Rookies and Juniors took to the track
with the focus on racing lines, hand/steering position
and braking.
Tuesday was quite hot, and much to everyone’s delight,
the day ended with a very refreshing good old
water pistol fight!!
Tuesday night, after a delicious BBQ dinner, movies
were shown on a huge screen in the clubs training centre.
After a good nights sleep and hearty breakfast
Wednesday kicked off with a fitness test, (cont)….
2
…..followed by more on track training including
overtaking; starting formations and procedures.
Off track activities included the importance of
good nutrition and driver psychology. Driving
instructor Peter Woodgate was very pleased
with the camp, commenting ...“It is great to see
so many young and enthusiastic faces at these
types of development camps. I really enjoy
helping them learn and watching them as they
progress through the ranks”. “The program
aims to encourage youngsters to continue to
race by developing their skills, which in turn
leads to better performance, followed by better
results and most importantly, more enjoyment”.
A well attended senior’s day, at the end of the
camp, rounded out a very successful event.
Plans for next year’s camp are well underway.
Slated for mid January 2008...Stay tuned to secure your place!!
Local Karters Make the Big Time
Underlining the benefits that a Karting background gives, the list of local Karters
receiving national recognition in circuit racing is rapidly growing.
Tom Drewer has enjoyed enormous success driving the West WR 1000 in the AMRS Thundersports
series in recent years and has recently debuted in a V8 Supercar at Round 2 of the Fujitsu development
series at Wakefield Park. The meeting held on March 31-April 1 saw Tom finishing a very creditable 24th
in race 1 and 17 th in the second heat after qualifying 27 th in the 35 entry field. An exploding left rear wheel
gave him a 200 KPM plus ride to the tyre wall on lap 23 of the 30 lap final whilst in 19 th position. He drove
a V8 Supercar for the first time in official practice on the Saturday morning of the meeting!!!
Nick Percat has signalled his intentions in this year’s national Formula Ford championship by qualifying on
the front row at round 1 of the series held at the Clipsal 500 Adelaide meeting driving his Tom Walkinshaw
Racing assisted Spectrum 011b. Nick enjoyed a sensational year driving Aussie legends last year
National series Formula Ford driver Samantha Reid has just competed in the WPS 12 Hour Race at
Bathurst driving a Holden Astra piloted by an all lady driver line up
CAMS Rising Star and reigning South Australian Junior Clubman & Junior National Heavy State
Champion Scott Pye has just competed in his first Formula Ford meeting, round 1 of the NSW Motor race
championship held at Wakefield Park on the 14 & 15th of April qualifying a sensational 2 nd driving his
1600cc Spectrum 010b. Scott finish 2nd in heat 1 and won heat 2. A 5th in the final gave him a first up
round win!!!!
Also competing in this years National Formula Ford series are Paul Pittam driving his Team BRM
Van Diemen RF06 and Asher Johnston in his Mygale SJ07A, while Steve Kwiatkowski (or Stevie K as he
is well known) has made a name for himself in the Saloon car class in recent years
All these people started at club level Karting.
Aim high, you never know where you might land!!!!!
19 year Italian Marco Mapelli, a former BIREL and Top Kart FACTORY DRIVER is living in Adelaide
while he competes in this years Australian Formula 3 Championship with Team BRM. Marco’s services
as a driving instructor, race engineer, chassis technician and also a mechanic are for hire to kart shops
and individual racers alike.
A “Meet Marco” night is to be held at Team BRM’s race headquarters to enable Adelaide karters to come
and have an informal chat, learn about international Karting and also see into the heart and soul of
World-class open wheeler race team, and how it functions. A VERY rare opportunity indeed!!
On the night Marco’s Formula 3 car will be on display as well as former South Australian Karter
Paul Pittam’s Formula Ford. The BRM boys will be on hand to give an overview on the team and answer
questions as well
South Australia has some 7 bitumen sprint Kart clubs: The Southern Sprint kart Club, The Barossa Go
Kart Club, The Go-kart Club of South Australia the Whyalla Go-Kart Club the Dublin Go-Kart Club, the
Mount Gambier Go-Kart Club and The Broken Hill Go-Kart Club.
In this issue of Karting SA our roving reporter interview’s 3 of South Australia’s club presidents, so to the
remaining presidents, look out, we’re after you next!!!
Firstly Dave Kissock, President of the Southern Go-kart Club
KSA: Dave, firstly many thanks for your time, most people wouldn’t realize it but Bolivar
has become environmentally friendly with the installation of new effluent system, how it
going?
DK: The 'Biocycle' system is now fully commissioned and operational so we are now
treating the effluent from the toilet block on site and the final product from the process being
treated water is being used to water the grass on the side of the main straight just
down from the grandstand.
KSA: What are the key benefits?
DK: As we have had to previously have all the waste from the toilet block pumped out by a waste contractor
as the holding tank filled, the Club will now achieve savings as the treatment of this waste will be
carried out site. The system operates continually so within 5 days of a race meeting the holding tank will
have been emptied as of all waste, treated and discharged into the watering system.
KSA: Will this keep the grass at the track green year round?
DK: With the continual use of our facility for both practice and racing there is a continual load on the
toilet block, this means there will always be waste moving through the treatment process, which means
watering will be happening all year round. As we have previously had over 100,000 litres of waste carted
away each year we will now be achieving that amount of recycled water for 'free' watering of our facility.
KSA: the development of Southern’s facility in recent years has raised it to a level where it ranks right up
there with the country’s best, what are the most recent improvements?
DK: With the continual improvement of our facility you will have all noticed a few changes this year, The
Outgrid shed has now been relocated to the south side of the Outgrid giving clear vision when pushing
out, 100 new padded chairs to the Training Centre (the old plastic chairs have finally been retired), The
final banks of tyres installed around the flag points to licence the track for reverse racing, Removal of the
old besser block store adjacent to the toilet block
KSA: What can South Australian karters look forward to next at Bolivar raceway?
DK: Construction of a verandah in the courtyard of the Engine Testing / Fuel Testing area, Installation
of 2 heaters into the Training Centre. We are presently awaiting to see if the Club is successful in achieving
a Grant from Office of Recreation & Sport for the purchase of 2 'J ' powered karts with clutches and the
new FIA/ CIK approved hand controls so that we can become more inclusive with our sport, to include
those with limited use of their legs. This will be a first for Karting in SA, so we are all hopeful.
KSA: Dave, once again many thanks for your time and all the best to you and the club for 2007
DK: Pleasure
Newsletter!
Give Give to to someone someone who’s who’s not not Karting Karting …….. …….. Yet Yet …: …:
…:
Steve Blee, President of the Barossa Go-Kart Club
KSA: Thanks for your time Steve, The SA Closed has just been run in fantastic
weather conditions, the event was well supported and very well run. I hear nothing but
praise for the event around the traps; you and your committee must be very pleased
SB: Thank you, we are thrilled with the event which ran smoothly for the two days
with fantastic autumn weather. We have been concerned over the last few years that the Closed States
has been given a low priority by the sport in general. The success of the event proves that SA needs the
Closed States with the full championship format of qualifying, heats, prefinal & final. This exposes our
drivers in SA to this type of event without the intensity generated at say the Open State Championship.
The feedback given us also questions the need for such an early close for nominations and the exclusion
of P plate drivers from the event. Both of these are determined by the AKA rulebook, however the SA
clubs through their AKA delegate should discuss promoting changes to these rules.
KSA: The Barossa club REALLY raised the bar on this event, which has been in the wilderness over the
last few years. Was this to give yourselves (by that I mean your current committee) experience running
large meetings in the future or ………..
SB: We strive to do the best we can at every event we run. The Karting community needs to be confident
that the high profile events conducted here in SA reflect well on us as a state. We are anxious to be
one of the clubs presenting high profile and well run events in this state.
KSA: Obviously we have our annual Barossa club favorites coming up during the year, the Doug Liddle /
Rod Gardner Memorial, The Midge Rookie Junior challenge, and of course you’re rounds of the FSC, but
what’s next on the agenda for the clubs itself and the facility?
SB: Since our circuit was designed, Karting has changed with longer tracks and wider racing surfaces
becoming the norm. While we have a nice compact circuit nestled in the beautiful Barossa Valley, and
have support for our facility from competitors and spectators, we recognise that some upgrades to the
track would be beneficial. Our committee are currently planning upgrading the track with the possibility of
opening up the notorious corner 2 and widening the racing surface. Due to the limitations of our land
area, it will require some innovation to achieve!
This year we have a good combination of experienced committee members and new enthusiastic people
working to make Barossa club better. I think it's the best committee we've had for some time. I think
Barossa Go Kart Club will be the one to watch in the next few years!
KSA: Steve it’s been a pleasure talking to you, I’m sure I speak for many SA Karters when I say Thank
you for a great SA closed State Championship meeting, all the best to you and the club
Now it’s over to Go-Kart club of SA
(also known to some as “The Pines”)
president Nick Dalitz
KSA: Nick thanks for your time, there is one BIG question on every South
Australian gokarters lips at the moment (Nick grins) …. But I’ll save it for the
end of the interview……
ND: Ok (with a chuckle)
KSA: Ok Nick we both know what the topic of this conversation is going be…the new track! This new
facility is not just a GKCSA venture is it?
ND: That’s exactly correct, the “Monarto International Karting complex” as it is to be known is a joint
venture with the Dublin go kart club, and ourselves
KSA: At what point are you now with the project
ND: We are currently in the final planning stages of the track lay out. Once we have finalised the layout
we will “map” the track out if you like with a grader, so we can see what the track will physically look like
and then review what we’ve done, fine tune it etc
KSA: Who else is involved in this process?
ND: The local council have to approve what we do obviously, as well as the AKA track inspector.
There are people in both the GKCSA and Dublin club that have put in a huge effort, but I won’t name
them, I will only miss some-one out and get into trouble.
KSA: How long will the new track be?
ND: The plans are to incorporate 2 circuits, a club circuit of some 750 meters and a championship layout
in excess of 1000 meters into the one track
KSA: And the layout, what can drivers expect…….
ND: The current layout makes good use of the site’s topography employing a wide range of corner
types, so I think there will be something there for everyone
KSA: So when will construction start, and how long will that process take
ND: Hopefully construction of the track itself will start in September / October of this year and take
about a month
KSA: I understand you are devising a system where people can purchase a metre of track or a corner to
help with the funding is this correct and how can people become involved?
ND: We are looking at various proposals, but the one on the table at the moment involves selling the
naming rights to a corner for a sum of $5,000 for a period of approx 5 years, and possibly selling a lineal
metre of the track to individuals for $100 and their name will be on a track map in the club rooms
KSA: Nick you’re also a resident of Murray Bridge, how do you feel this new facility will benefit both your
local community and the Karting community.
ND: I feel the benefits will intertwine. I feel that the facility will bring new people into the sport from both
Murray Bridge and the surrounding areas; this will help karting in general, by sheer numbers. These people
will then compete at other circuits, consume goods from the kart shops and the sports service providers
and so on. This area is quite an untapped market from our perspective……..(cont)
6

KSA: and the community.
ND: I also feel a nock-on effect to the various local communities in numerous ways, again consumption
of goods from local vendors and social interaction not only from various residential community groups but
also business’s and other sporting clubs. We are hopeful that the facility will be used by the local schools
for training and alike.
KSA OK Nick, so the BIG question is …….. when can the Karting fraternity expect to race on the
“Monarto international Karting complex”?
ND: I knew that question was coming (followed by hearty laughter)……… We are hopeful, and I stress
hopeful of holding the SA Open at the circuit this year, but obviously as we have just discussed, a lot of
things have to fall into place for that to happen, but we will try our best to make that happen
KSA: Nick it’s been great talking with you, thanks for your time and all the best with your clubs
endeavors
ND: No probs any time
