Intoxicatingly melodious and exuberant, it is
replete with mistaken identities, flirtations at a
masked ball, elegant frivolities and confusions of all
kinds which provide a hilarious vehicle for some of
the most captivating music ever written, which, of
course, includes the great Fledermaus Waltz. Be
Summer 1914. The King and his friends take an
dedicate themselves to a life of study. No sooner
have they made their pledge, than the Princess of
France and her ladies-in-waiting arrive, severely
testing their resolve. Shakespeare’s sparkling
comedy delights in suggesting that the study of the
opposite sex is in fact the highest of all academic
endeavours.
Take a step back into 1920s New York City and
through the doors of Harlem's hottest club, The
Cotton Club. In this show, the exciting dance and
music of the Cotton Club is recreated by the
fabulous Jiving Lindy Hoppers, the world’s premier
jazz dance company and Harry Strutters Hot
Rhythm Orchestra featuring vocalist Marlene Hill
and compere/vocalist Megs Etherington.
The play, set in a small town beauty parlour tells
the story of the lives, loves and misfortunes of a
group of women. As the title suggests the main
female characters can be both as delicate as the
magnolia and as tough as steel so expect to experience
a plethora of emotions as you watch this
production.
An acoustic group who perform modern pop
favourites like you've never heard them before.
Living Data - Michael Takeo Magruder
28 Feb - 18 April
Living Data is a new solo exhibition by the visual
artist Michael Takeo Magruder that explores the
creation of evolving virtual/physical artworks
which are generated from the ubiquitous artefacts
of the digital domain. Derived from the vast and
ever-changing sea of collective data that underpins
our everyday existence, this work considers how
emerging technologies –from Internet services to
social media content – arise from and feed back
into the real world, reflecting (while affecting)
contexts and situations within our globalised,
information-rich society.
Both beautiful and thought provoking, the
pieces in the exhibition creatively blend modern
computer systems and networks with traditional
forms of visual art. The result is a selection of
digitally hybrid paintings, sculptures, videos and
installations that give visitors an opportunity to
experience new ways of seeing and interacting
with the ephemeral realms of ‘living’ data which
are now an increasingly fundamental part of
contemporary life.
Michael Takeo Magruder (b.1974, US/UK) is an
internationally recognised visual artist who works
with digital and new media including real-time
data, immersive environments, mobile devices
and virtual worlds. In the last 15 years, Michael’s
art has been showcased in over 250 exhibitions
in 30 countries. In 2010, Michael was selected
to represent the UK at Manifesta 8: the
European Biennial of Contemporary Art
and several of his most well-known digital
artworks were added to the Rose Goldsen
Archive of New Media Art at Cornell
University.
Karl Blossfeldt Art forms in Nature
25 April - 31 May
A Hayward Touring exhibition which presents an
original portfolio of 40 photogravures from 1932,
entitled ‘Wundergarten der Natur’, edited by the
artist and published in the year of his death. The
exhibition presents an opportunity to witness an
exemplary set of Blossfedt’s signature close-up
images of plants and flora.
Blossfeldt (1865-1932) is regarded as one of the
defining photographers of the twentieth century
for his exceptional contribution to the art through
his intricate botanical photographs. During his
career, which spanned over three decades and
included 6,000 photographs, Blossfeldt developed
homemade cameras and lenses which enabled him
to magnify his subjects by up to 30 times. In doing
so he captured the microcosmic aesthetic of his
specimens and revealed the underlying structures
of nature, which until then remained unexplored.
