“We look forward to continuing
to support our participants in refining
their ideas and carrying out the
commercialization process,” says Daly.
“Our primary plans moving ahead are
to facilitate connections between those
entrepreneurs and other potential
partners, suppliers, manufacturers and
sources of capital.”

The Technologies –
The Ideas

Access Rate Control: A low-cost, ready-to-install, fullymechanical
system that controls the speed of entry through a fullheight
gate or turnstile.
The idea: Launch the product as a security system retrofitted
for existing turnstile-like gates without requiring access to
electricity. In the second stage, develop fitness and exercise
equipment using the mechanical system to safely offer up and
down resistance.
Banshee: A non-lethal “sound grenade” that generates a high
pitch sound reaching up to 144 decibels.
The idea: Introduce the product into the personal-use
market as a substitute for mace. In particular, advertise it as
a means of warding off aggressive and potentially dangerous
animals, such as bears or stray dogs.
Tropex Blending System: A portable tool
that works with gases, vapors, volatile liquids and
moisture. This highly accurate and cost effective tool
can be used for reading instruments in the field and for
blending gases and vapors in the lab.
The idea: Seek sales with all Department of
Energy laboratories to market the technology to the
pharmaceutical industry, which seeks safe methods
of mixing sensitive compounds to ensure correct
therapeutic effects.
Safeguards and Security Tracking, Analysis
and Reporting (SSTARS): A feature-rich software
system used for issues management and enhanced tracking of
trends related to safety and security.
The idea: Use the technology to model city features and
simulate energy usage and carbon emissions to improve city
planning, building codes and energy efficiency with the ultimate
goal of leveraging Chattanooga’s reputation as a model for
sustainability by becoming the first large-scale, complex city
simulation for the built environment.
Fiber Innovations: A non-toxic, non-hazardous dry
cleaning cloth that removes ultrafine particulates without leaving
residue.
The idea: Market the product to semi-conductor and
pharmaceutical industries as a means of ensuring cost-effective,
“ultra clean” manufacturing environments.
CerMet: A method for bonding ceramic and metal materials
together to create an anti-ballistic material.
The idea: Manufacture body armor plates for inclusion in
flak jacket and bulletproof vests. This material is lighter and more
protective than the current technology and should therefore give
soldiers a higher level of protection from hostile fire.
