The crest is in the form of a shield and depicts the cross,<br />
representing our faith in the risen Jesus Christ, as well as<br />
an illuminated open book, symbolic of our commitment<br />
to learning and development of each individual.<br />
The <strong>College</strong> Aim is to foster the spirit of Faith, Wisdom and Courage in our<br />

<strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>Baptist</strong> <strong>College</strong> commenced in 1999 after the successful<br />
establishment of Winthrop <strong>Baptist</strong> <strong>College</strong>. The Board governed school<br />
caters for Years 8 to 12 and currently is comprised of over 600 students, 50<br />
teachers, 3 administration and 8 ancillary staff.<br />

Christian Faith<br />
School Colours are Green, Black and White. All students are to be neat in appearance<br />
and in complete Uniform travelling to and from the <strong>College</strong> or when representing their<br />
<strong>College</strong>. Students are to wear the complete uniform as outlined below.<br />
Uniform Expectations<br />
All students are to be neat in appearance and in complete uniform travelling to and from<br />
the <strong>College</strong> or when representing their <strong>College</strong> either in groups or as individuals (unless<br />
otherwise specified).<br />
Hats<br />
The hat is to be worn at recess and lunch time all year. Untidy hats will need to be replaced<br />
if required by the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
Blazers<br />
The <strong>College</strong> blazer is to be worn in public, during Terms 2 and 3, while travelling, at<br />
school functions and when representing the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
Jumpers<br />
In school, jumpers may be worn with or without the blazer over the top. In public, if the<br />
jumper is worn then the blazer must be worn over the top of the jumper.<br />

Sports Uniform<br />
Correct sports uniform is to be worn at training and during matches. Sports uniform is<br />
not to be worn to school in the morning. <strong>College</strong> sports socks are to be worn with the<br />
sport uniform only.<br />
Students travelling home by public transport after school are to change back into school<br />
uniform. An exception is made for those training or competing late. These students may<br />
travel home in the <strong>College</strong> tracksuit (permission must be given by the Physical Education<br />
teacher).<br />
Socks or Tights<br />
Socks, tights - girl’s white fold-over anklet socks can be worn all year round. Optional<br />
black tights can be purchased from the <strong>College</strong> for winter. Socks and tights are not to be<br />
worn together.<br />
Boys must wear the grey <strong>College</strong> socks with both summer and winter uniforms.<br />
Shoes<br />
Black leather lace up shoes (no heels) are to be worn with both the summer and winter<br />
<strong>College</strong> uniforms. Black sports shoes are not acceptable footwear.<br />
Predominantly white sports shoes are to be worn with the <strong>College</strong> sports uniform.<br />
Skirts<br />
Dress or skirt length to be middle of the knee or below.<br />
Shorts<br />
Boys shorts to be no lower than the top of the knee - the knee must be visible.<br />
Hair<br />
Girl’s hair, if shoulder length is to be tied up. Green or black scrunchies are acceptable.<br />
Hair clips, if used, need to match hair colour.<br />
The boy’s styles and length of hair must be no longer than the shirt collar and conform to<br />
<strong>College</strong> standards.<br />
Extremes of hair colour, including long fringes, shaven sides or shaven heads is not<br />
permitted. Boy’s hair cut is to be no shorter than a No. 2.<br />
Boy’s faces are to be clean shaven.<br />

Makeup<br />
When students are in uniform, make-up, nail polish etc. is not to be worn.<br />
Jewellery<br />
Boys and girls are permitted to wear a wristwatch. Students may wear one plain chain with<br />
a cross or Christian fish symbol. Additionally, girls are permitted to wear one small, plain<br />
sleepers or stud earrings in the lower lobe of the ear. Other jewellery worn by students will<br />
be confiscated for the duration of the school term.<br />
Notes<br />
All items of clothing are to be clearly marked with the student’s name. Other than<br />
this no student is to write on any part of the school uniform.<br />
Breaches of uniform rules will result in warning, detention, suspension and finally<br />
exclusion from the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
School begins with morning form at 8.00am and finishes at 2.45pm. Recess is at 10.30am<br />
and lunch break at 12.20pm.<br />
Transperth buses run from/to Murdoch Train Station (Service 514) at 7:38am, 2:47pm<br />
and from/to Cockburn Central Station (Service 514) at 7:18am, 2:48pm directly into the<br />
<strong>College</strong> each school day.<br />
In accordance with the Motto and <strong>College</strong> aim, all students and teachers have the right<br />
and responsibility to ensure that they:<br />
• Do not disrupt others who are engaged in learning or teaching<br />
• Treat all students, teachers and visitors to the <strong>College</strong> courteously<br />
• Do not subject students, teachers or visitors to any form of arbitrary<br />
discrimination or abuse which may offend, intimidate or place at a<br />
disadvantage<br />

The foundation of the Pastoral Care in the <strong>College</strong> lies within the Form class and<br />
with the Heads of Year. Each Form Teacher is available for consultation where<br />
students are experiencing difficulties or have questions. The Form Teacher will also<br />
be a contact person when the Head of Year is monitoring a student’s progress.<br />
The Head of Year is available to all students in that year level, and will coordinate special<br />
programs, where necessary, to monitor the student’s progress. The Head of Year is a liaison<br />
person in dealing with the parents and teachers of the students. The Principal coordinates<br />
the pastoral care for all students.<br />
Newsletters are distributed fortnightly via hand and email if requested. They are also<br />
available on the website via a password and contain <strong>College</strong>, Parent and Friends and<br />
Community information.<br />
All students from Years 8-10 will take Examinations in their 5 period per week subjects<br />
at the end of the school year. Subject assessments are carried out in the middle of the year<br />
for Year 8 and 9 students, with examinations for Year 10 students. Every effort will be<br />
made to assist students with exam preparation and study skills. Heads of<br />
Year are always available to assist students with their study routines. Year 11 and 12<br />
students undertake examinations mainly in TEE subjects and Courses of Study.<br />
Tutoring is available from <strong>College</strong> staff in core subject areas. Students may take advantage<br />
of regular tutoring sessions that are held throughout the week after school. Students (who<br />
would like tutoring on a one-to-one basis) would need to contact their teacher, Head of<br />
Department or Head of Year. Interim Reports will be forwarded to parents at Easter<br />
with Semester Reports forwarded at the conclusion of the first semester and at the end<br />
of the school year.<br />

Extra Curricular Activities may be undertaken in addition to the general <strong>College</strong><br />
curriculum. Students may participate in subject-specific competitions such as the<br />
Mathematics & Science Competitions and Alliance Francais.<br />
Students involved in Music are encouraged to join the <strong>College</strong> Band or undertake<br />
private music tuition through the <strong>College</strong>. Enquiries can be made to the Music Teacher.<br />
There are many sporting teams available for students to join, including basketball, netball,<br />
football, swimming, athletics, squash, aerobics, cheerleading and chess.<br />
The <strong>College</strong> offers a Christian focus Youth Club, Bible study group, Chess and Media<br />
Club during lunchtimes of the school week.<br />
The Student Council incorporates representatives from each year group and is led by<br />
the Head Girl and Head Boy. The purpose of the Student Council is to tackle student<br />
issues and to contribute positively towards the <strong>College</strong> life. Students may nominate at the<br />
end of the school year to represent their year group for the following year, and if elected,<br />
represent their form for a one-year term.<br />
Compulsory <strong>College</strong> Functions. Attendance at the following <strong>College</strong> functions is a<br />
requirement of each student at <strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>Baptist</strong> <strong>College</strong> every year without exemption.<br />
• <strong>College</strong> Sunday Service – Term 1<br />
• Thanksgiving and Prize giving – Term 4<br />
• Years 9 and 11 camps<br />
• Intra School Swimming<br />
• Intra School Athletics<br />
Failure to attend two compulsory events in the year will result in exclusion<br />
from the <strong>College</strong>. (A medical certifi cate is acceptable to cover non-attendance at such events).<br />

Students are expected to do Homework every evening. This can include:<br />

The following is a guide to expected total homework time per evening<br />

Students should also complete at least one homework session per weekend. All homework<br />
should be written in the homework diary. The teacher will follow up homework that is not<br />
completed and if necessary, the parents will be informed of regular or repeatedly missed<br />
or incomplete work.<br />
Streams (In Core Subjects) All Year 8’s experience a common course in each subject<br />
as they adjust to the substantial changes in high school. After a period of time when they<br />
have had the opportunity to demonstrate abilities and reveal needs they will be placed<br />
in streamed classes so that as the material becomes more challenging, all students can be<br />
catered for at their level of ability.<br />
This usually occurs in Year 9 but some streaming can be undertaken earlier, in Year<br />
8. Some Year 9 classes may still experience common classes. At the conclusion of each<br />
semester these classes are reviewed and, where necessary, changes can be made. Any<br />
change to a class group will be conveyed in writing to the parents of the students.<br />

Year 8 students at <strong>Somerville</strong> <strong>Baptist</strong> <strong>College</strong> have a fi xed program designed to give a<br />
‘taste’ in a variety of subjects across the curriculum. This also assists in making more<br />
informed choices for Years 9 and 10.<br />
The school week will have 35 periods. Each day will consist of 7 periods of<br />
45 minutes duration.<br />
Students attend a Form period at the beginning and at the end of the day to take the roll,<br />
receive any notices or to make contact with the Form teacher.<br />

REGISTRATION<br />
To register your child/ren at the <strong>College</strong>, please complete the Registration of Interest form<br />
included in the prospectus and return it to the <strong>College</strong> with a family registration payment<br />
of $50. The registration fee of $50 will place your child/ren on preliminary lists for the<br />
year that they would begin Year 8 at the <strong>College</strong>.<br />
ENROLMENT<br />
Interviews are conducted two years before anticipated entry to the <strong>College</strong>. Once a<br />
satisfactory interview has been completed a $500 deposit confirms the student placement<br />
for the year in which they will start. The deposit is non refundable but will be deducted<br />
from the annual school fees when they start in Year 8.<br />

every Year Level. Affi liation with a church is not a prerequisite, however students and parents must accept that<br />
