Impulsive vigour, dynamic performance 

Vulkan is the German word for a volcano, and brings to 

mind excitement, verve, fire and blazing heat. Experience 

the AURUM VULKAN at its very best, deploying its impulsive 

vigour to generate veritable aural pyrotechnics. In spite of its 

enormous music-handling capacity, this 250/400 W speaker 

has an incredibly finely developed feeling for quiet sounds, 

too. It effortlessly brings out the sometimes hardly intimated 

sonic nuances of sensitive expressive music. 

Like the TITAN, the VULKAN also features a pressure 

chamber/reflex configuration for deep-down, power-packed 

yet clearly contoured basses. Like the woofer, the midrange 

unit is equipped, with the proven, sonically neutral and 

highly dynamic ALTIMA® diaphragm. The VULKAN’s large 

new ribbon tweeter handles each and every impulse with an

MONTAN 


Irrepressible personality, impressive stature 

More graceful than the TITAN and VULKAN, the AURUM 

MONTAN uncompromisingly follows in the footsteps of 

its prominent sister models. Indeed, thanks to its close 

technological family ties, it is even capable of arousing the 

same emotions. 

And, like the TITAN and VULKAN, it has a 26-cm woofer 

with ALTIMA® diaphragm and operates in a cabinet featuring 

a pressure chamber/reflex configuration; this makes the bass 

deeper, more contoured and free of distortion. The midrange 

unit, too is equipped with an ALTIMA® diaphragm that is in 

a class of its own where speed, dynamic response and tonal 

accuracy are concerned. 

Powerful symmetrical magnetic fields make for impressive 

efficiency, fine detailing, and meticulous accuracy in 

translating electrical signals into acoustic signals. The 

tweeter’s lightweight ribbon diaphragm is driven by extremely 

powerful neodymium magnetic bars that guarantee highspeed, 

precisely detailed response to each and every impulse.

active subwoofer. For high-fidelity stereo reproduction, 

it is mainly the bookshelf speakers

system. With a newly developed 25 cm

Tweeters with feather-light ribbon membranes are a 

solid tradition at quadral. With the CHROMIUM series' 

newly developed ribbon, the membrane also takes on 

the job of the voice coil. The signals from the amplifier 

go through a transformer directly into a sheer, pleated 

aluminium strip — that’s the ribbon. 

This aluminium ribbon is embedded in a strong magnetic 

field. Because of its negligible mass, the ribbon 

transforms the alternating current signals almost

There is one very big difference between acoustic 

instruments and loudspeakers, namely that 

the best of the former pamper our hearing with 

the most beautiful natural resonances while 

the best of the latter do so with the smallest 

possible degree of these. The source of this 

natural resonance is frequently the wood itself 

as it vibrates in its own individual manner.

in terms of resonance, we have simply done 

things in our own way, intensively examining 

and subsequently optimising the vibratory behaviour 

of the AURUM’s cabinet walls. When 

this has been completed, our craftsmen then 

put together the cabinet in this perfected form. 

The Pressure Chamber/ 

Reflex Principle 

The cabinets of the TITAN, VULKAN, MONTAN 

and ORKAN have a very special common feature, 

namely that the rear sides of the diaphragms 

work in a bass reflex environment 

and the front sides in a pressure chamber. This 

technology was initially used in professionalstandard 

recording studio monitor units and 

is practically unprecedented in the world of 

hi-fi speakers. The combination of the pressure 

chamber and reflex principles enables incredible 

sonic intensity coupled with the very highest 

aural accuracy. And the nice thing about 

it: even at very high volumes the bass remains 

contoured and impressive in their depth.

The Crossover Network 

Bisectional in the TITAN, the elaborate crossover circuits are 

built from high-quality, selected components. 

They have low-impedance, laminated transformer coil cores 

for low-loss and low-distortion reproduction in the lower 

tonal ranges, particularly fast PP film capacitors and lowinductance 

metal film resistors for accurately defined trebles. 

The crossover circuits function in an extremely ampfriendly 

manner, so the TITAN, VULKAN 

and MONTAN will also harmonize with 

amplifiers of the exotic kind as well. 

The ALTIMA® Diaphragms

The loudspeakers in the AURUM range never fail to impress 

with their innovative power. ALTIMA® is a perfected composite 

of the three light metals aluminium, titanium and 

magnesium, specially developed to achieve optimal vibratory 

characteristics. The main reason behind the differences 

in the way that diverse materials sound lies in the 

fact that vibrating diaphragms bend uncontrollably and do 

not then follow the parameters of the voice coil. The extent 

of these so-called “partial vibrations” largely determines the 

intrinsic sound produced by a diaphragm. 

Against this background 

the loud-speaker manufacturers 

endeavour to suppress materialinduced 

resonances as effectively 

as possible, distributing them over 

various frequencies in order to conceal them to the greatest 

possible extent. ALTIMA®, in contrast, opens up completely 

new possibilities: on the one hand, it enables the forcing out 

of material resonances from where they are taking place in 

the speaker and, on the other, it enables the resonances to 

be gathered and then eliminated via network. This sounds 

like a simple enough process but it is hardly possible with 

other materials, so the characteristics that set our cone diaphragms 

apart from the rest are speed, meticulous precision 

and the absence of undesired resonances. 

The AURUM Ribbon Tweeter 

The ribbon tweeters, which were specially developed by 

quadral's AURUM, work on the magnetostatic principle. We 

favour using ribbon tweeters, as they produce the best ratio 

between power and size and we also use very valuable and 

powerful neodymium magnets to drive the feather-light 

foil. This enables the signal to pass through the gossamer 

membrane in an effortless process (see Fig. 2). The whole 

surface area is driven here, unlike a conventional dome (see 

Fig. 1) that only uses the outer edge, as using the entire 

driven area prevents any partial oscillations from occurring. 

The oblong styling of the sound outlet also improves the 

sound dispersion characteristics and very wide sound emission 

can be realised horizontally and this also effectively

prevents the severe bundling of unwanted reflections from 

the ceiling and the floor that occurs in the vertical axis. 

The TITAN’s exceptional status is the result of numerous 

technical innovations and optimisations. The ribbon-tweeter 

has been completely re-developed according to the principles 

used in a real ribbon speaker: Its gossamer and featherlike 

membrane is in close contact with two hugely powerful 

neodymium magnetic blocks. The membrane is 

somewhat finer as compared to its predecessor 

yet it can clearly handle greater ranges and 

it is so effectively damped at the rear that this 

ribbon speaker reproduces astounding music 

and the finest tone details with phenomenal 

ease! 

Three different types of ribbons are used by 

quadral's AURUM. The membrane surface area of the big 

MONTAN and VULKAN ribbons is four times bigger when 

compared to the smaller ribbons, which are also ideally 

suited for reproducing music, and this enables the AURUM 

ribbon tweeters to work at a full octave deeper (from 2 KHZ) 

and generate 10 dB more maximum pressure, which means 

that they can play at double the previous sound level. 

In summing up, it can be seen that ribbon tweeters also produce 

dazzling detail that is also clear and velvety at low volumes 

and they also easily outperform conventional domes 

due to the conventional dome’s inherent mechanical resistance.

Aluminium Diaphragms 

We managed to get even closer to quadral’s 

proven ALTIMA® diaphragms with the new aluminium 

diaphragms of the PLATINUM M. We 

started by using aluminium with a somewhat 

higher magnesium portion, which provided 

the diaphragms with more rigidity and their 

surface with higher compressive strength. This 

however also changed the frequency response, 

which we corrected with small modifications 

to the diaphragm shape and dust protection 

calotte in its centre.

The so-called harmonics or harmonic distortions remain 

at a very low level of about 0.5 %. This benefits tonal 

cleanliness as well as level stability, requires however

RiCom M Tweeters 

The cleverly designed sound guidance of the 

PLATINUM Frequency response in different angles 

newly developed RiCom M offers the possibility 

of maintaining an unusually straight-lined 

frequency response of the complete loudspeaker 

even beyond its centreline. Advantage: 

The sound characteristic hardly changes with 

the hearing position. Until now, only few highend 

loudspeakers have accomplished this feat,

Biwiring-Terminal 

Loudspeakers with a biwiring terminal are 

equipped with two separable signal inputs. 

It is therefore possible to control the tweeter 

and woofer separately: either with two different 

cables (biwiring) or, which is better for the 

sound, with two different amplifiers (biamping). 

In this way, you can achieve maximum 

performance from your loudspeakers. This because 

some amplifiers and cables are particularly 

well suited for higher frequencies, while 

others are better suited for woofer rendition.

The diaphragms of classical ribbon tweeters, 

which have been known for the last 80 years, 

are suspended in a constant magnetic field and 

alternating current flowing through them excites 

appropriate oscillations. The aluminium

order to make them movable or liftable and to 

increase their effective length in the air gap. 

Ribbons can furthermore easily achieve a range 

far beyond the threshold of hearing due to the 

low moved mass. No separate moving coil is 

required since the diaphragm itself is electrically 

conductive; however, a transducer similar 

to a transformer is necessary to increase the 

electrical resistance of the aluminium strip to 

compatible values. The fascinating thing about 

small ribbons: The light diaphragm helps them 

to subjectively perceived speed and to have 

razor-sharp detail accuracy. Because harmonics 

change their frequency and their amplitude 

during music rendition within a thousandth 

part of a second. Following this change immediately, 

thus nearly without inertia is the 

unusual strength of the ribbons.

Softclipping and Peak-Limiter 

So-called limiters are normally used to prevent 

overloading or over-modulation, limiters 

for the input level. Usual limiters work similar 

to an expandable rubber band that is fastened 

to a ball and prevents it hitting a wall, in order 

to avoid a slamming impact or even damages. 

Such a rubber band affects all ball movements 

however, not only on the large ones. 

Transferred to a subwoofer this means: subwoofers 

with a limiter sound slightly faded or 

distorted, even if they counter-act extreme input 

levels effectively. This softening of the bass 

notes is quite audible in direct comparison. For 

this reason quadral always preferred a softclipping 

circuit, which behaves rather like a flexible 

wall and softens the impact of the ball, in order 

to prevent material damages. 

Additionally, a quite complex peak limiter developed 

by quadral is now available, which only 

intervenes if electronics and bass chassis have 

really achieved their performance limit; but not 

beforehand as is normally the case. Accordingly, 

the basses of quadral subwoofers are always 

crisp and clear, even though an overmodulation 

– accompanied by hard distortions – is 

prevented perfectly. 

Run time correction 

The tweeter is positioned between two woofermid-range 

speakers in nearly all commercial 

centre boxes and they only render music correctly 

directly on the axis. Whoever sits to the 

side of the tweeter axis experiences substantial 

sound pressure losses within the presence range 

(between 1 kHz and 4 kHz), which does not only 

audibly impair voice rendition. 

Most manufacturers accept these restrictions 

with a shrug of a shoulder, while a few others 

counter with a fourth chassis, a mid-range loudspeaker 

positioned under the tweeter. However, 

they only shift the problem from the horizontal 

to the vertical plane, i.e. the centre box may now 

not be simply put on or under the TV equipment 

but must be aligned exactly to ear height, thus 

angled, in order to sound correctly. A doubtful 

compromise. quadral has intentionally chosen 

its own method. 

A run time and/or a phase correction in the 

diplexer ensures that the inevitable drop in the 

presence range is by far less pronounced than 

otherwise – it is hardly even verifiable in the 

vertical. Therefore, quadral centre loudspeakers 

must neither be aligned to laterally sitting listeners 

nor to the ear height of the listeners, in 

order to sound clear and concise to all listeners.

The positioning of surround 

loudspeakers 

A centre loudspeaker should be in the proximity 

of the TV equipment. Best on or under the 

screen. The TV picture is not affected by its proximity 

due to the magnetic shielding of the centre 

box. 

Rear satellites must on the other hand always be 

behind or if not otherwise possible, next to the 

listener position. The best option is to position 

them slightly above ear height, thus one meter 

or somewhat more above the floor. They therefore 

require a stand if they are not mounted on 

the wall or put onto the shelf. Dipoles and bipolar 

rear loudspeakers distribute the sound for- 

ward and to the rear by the way and therefore 

produce a particularly spacious sound pattern. 

If bass precision is of special interest, a distance 

of at least 50cm must be observed from all room 

walls (if possible also from the floor). Furthermore, 

the hearing distance to subwoofer and 

front boxes should be almost equal. In order to 

realize maximum bass levels, subwoofers should

be near to room walls or even room corners. 

Reflections and standing waves in the hearing 

room can easily double the bass volume and

Pressure chamber 

The woofer operates in a pressure chamber bass refl ex system 

which leads to the highest precision and the maximum low 

point in the bass. The reason for this is that the pressure chamber 

improves the level of effi ciency in the upper bass range and so 

the membrane movement required is reduced. The reduced 

membrane stroke reduces the contortions which allows the
