A Collision of Beliefs Rick Najera’s A Peculiar People is a comedy and a drama where Curtain Call personalities collide in ancient Rome. KATHLEEN CHRISTIAN Justinian appears to be a man of the world with a stout philosophy a peculiar people under his belt and a map Fri.-Sat., Sept. 21-22 • 8 p.m. to wealth. His only problem is that he’s trapped Sun., Sept. 23 • 2:30 p.m. in a prison cell with a fanatical woman. Between the odd couples’ witty banter and laughable differences, there are beatings and death threats made at knife point which come on with such sudden intensity they’ll leave your jaw on its way to the floor. The Centurion and his right-hand soldier see Christians as barbaric, ritualistic atheists and frequent their cell in order to illicit information about other Christians. As the story unfolds, we are allowed a glimpse into the past of Justinian and the heart of the Centurion who are much more than they appear to be. We watch as selfish ambition and blind loyalty give way to the soldiers and prisoners’ deeper understanding of humanity and each other’s differences. As Marium, Bridget Bogdon is a believably devout follower of Christ, though her impassioned pleas often fall on the deaf ears of Eric Black who plays Justinian. Black’s enthusiasm and energy give life to the desperation of his character. Jeff Salisbury gives astounding depth and intensity to the misunderstood Centurion. The prisoners are warned that their lack of compliance will not be taken so well by a visitor who is eager to meet a Christian in person. Indeed the visiting dignitary, played by Dennis Nichols, has a dark cruelty about him that is more deadly than the heavy-handed soldiers. I was lucky enough to see an early performance of this one-weekend engagement brought together beautifully by director Lauren Nichols. Nichols was periodically able to work directly with award-winning writer Najera to clearly communicate his vision. A Peculiar People accomplishes much in its relatively short duration.
