Parent/Student Handbook

Tuscany School
Dear Parents:
A warm welcome goes out to all students and families of Tuscany School. Tuscany staff is
dedicated to meeting the needs of our students and providing exceptional educational
opportunities and programming that actively engage and support students to reach their fullest
potential.
This handbook has been developed to provide key information you and your child will need for a
successful experience at Tuscany School. We hope you will find this handbook helpful and
informative. Parent communication is critical to the parent/child/school relationship and we
encourage you to review the information found within carefully.
We look forward to meeting you during the September Orientation/ Parent/Teacher
conferences and subsequent Celebrations of Learning throughout the year. Information about
our school, school council, TSES, special events, parent-teacher conferences, and access to the
school newsletter and annual report will be available on our website at www.cbe.ab.ca/b393.
SAFETY AND SECURITY
Bicycles, Skateboards, Rollerblades, Scooters and Heelies
Children may ride their bikes to school. They are to walk their bikes on the school grounds and on the
sidewalk in front of the school and should be aware of the rules of bike safety, including the mandatory use
of helmets. Locks must be provided for each bike and the students must use the bike racks at the school.
The school does not assume responsibility for the security of bikes.
According to school board regulations, skateboards, rollerblades, scooters and heelies are prohibited from
school board property. Please do not bring these items to school. Bicycles should not be ridden on school
grounds at any time.
Communications
We encourage on-going communication between home and school. Please feel free to call, or e-mail the
school if you have questions or concerns. Information will be forwarded through your child’s agenda, which
should be checked daily, electronic newsletters, e-mail, voicemail and our school website.
To contact the office directly please dial “0”. Our office hours are 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. To speak with your
child’s teacher please access their voice mailbox. Leave a message and the teacher will return your call as
soon as possible.
Custody
If you have custody arrangements for your child, please make sure that the school has the appropriate
documentation or directions on file. The purpose is so the school can clearly identify who has permission to
pick up children from school and who has access to student information.
Emergency Information
Please notify the school as soon as possible if you have a change of address, email address, home or work
phone numbers or a change in your child’s emergency contact, or the contact’s phone number.
Fire Drills
CBE regulations require that schools have a minimum of 6 fire drills each school year. The drills must occur
at different times and in all types of weather. It is important that your child wear shoes at all times as we
are required to exit the building immediately.
Illness at school
If a child becomes ill during the school day, parents will be notified and asked to come and pick-up their
child. Students will wait in the office infirmary so they can be supervised.
Inclement Weather
It is important that your child has outdoor clothes appropriate for the weather at all times. Children will be
expected to wait outside before school in the morning and at lunch unless weather is extreme. During
extreme cold or other inclement weather situations, students will enter the building on arrival and proceed
directly to their classrooms (students should not arrive at school before 8:50 a.m). Look for the blue signs
on each door advising of inclement weather. In extreme cold weather only, please access the school by the
nearest entry door. Teachers will be available to supervise at these times. Please remind your child to take
all mitts, hats, boots and gloves with them to their classrooms.

Medication and Severe Allergies
Parents need to be aware that school personnel are not authorized to dispense medication without the
written consent of the parent on a Request to Administer Medication form. It is necessary to complete this
form if your child has any medication, such as an inhaler which can be self-administered. This form is
available from the office and must be completed each school year. If children are required to receive
medication (including Ventolin inhalers) during the school day, the classroom teacher and office must be
informed. Medication should not be kept in backpacks but in the school office.
Parents of children with severe allergies are required to advise the principal and classroom teacher at the
beginning of the school year. We must have emergency contact information, a recent photograph, and other
pertinent information so that the school can have appropriate emergency procedures in place. Medical forms
must be completed on an annual basis. Students who require an Epi-Pen on site should consider wearing one in
a fanny pack each day, as well as having one stored in the infirmary. Students are often well away from the
building during recess, lunch breaks and outdoor physical education periods. In the interest of immediate
intervention, if ever required, a supervisor who is trained to administer the Epi-Pen could access the Epi-Pen
immediately from the fanny pack.
Nutrition
It is well researched that healthy eating enables learning. Tuscany is part of Teaming Up 4 Healthy Learners
Projects sponsored by Alberta Health and Wellness. Good nutrition and healthy eating habits are essential
and all students need to bring healthy snacks to school. We ask that parents send fruit for snack on Fridays.
We call this Fresh Fruit Friday. We ask that parents consider the adverse effects of sugary snacks such as
candy and pop on children’s learning and do not send these to school. Should a snack be required for a
particular event, parents will be contacted by their homeroom parent coordinator and asked to bring a fresh
fruit tray. Tuscany School is very proud of the awards won by the Teaming Up for Healthy Learners
committee in 2008-2009 and 2010-2011.
Birthday celebrations are welcome at Tuscany School. You are welcome to celebrate your child’s birthday by
having your child select a book from a specially chosen collection. We will place the birthday child’s name on
a bookplate inside the front cover of the book. The cost is $20.00 for each hardcover donated and $10.00
for each paperback. If you would like to participate, please send a note along with cash or cheque (payable
to Tuscany School). Your child’s generosity will be recognized within his or her classroom.
Opening Day Procedure
All CBE students start back to school on the same day each year. Due to the increasing number of students
we have at Tuscany School, we will continue to inform students and parents of classroom placements on the
Friday before school starts. This requires parents and students to keep a close eye on their home email.
Each family will receive an email letting them know the name of their teacher, their room number and Pod
location and the door they are to line up at to enter the building at the 9:00 a.m. bell on the first day of
school.
Kindergarten parents are asked to accompany their child to the library on their staggered entry day.
All parents in Grades 1-3 are welcome to accompany their children to the school playground before the bell
rings at 9:00 a.m. and will not accompany children into the building at that time as we are unable to
accommodate large numbers of adults due to space limitations and fire regulations. You will pick your
child(ren) up at the same door they entered.

Parking/Driving
The parking lot south of the school is reserved for staff 24 hours a day. Students should not be in the
parking lot and it should not be used as a drop off or pick-up area or as a place to tie their dogs. Please do
not cut across to the main sidewalk in front of the garbage bins to access the school grounds. The parking
lot is a dangerous place and we would like to ensure the safe access of our students to our playground.
Phone In For Safety
ATTENDANCE: Telephone-For-Safety Program 777-8060 ext “1”
The Telephone - For - Safety Program is in operation. Call our 24-hour answering service at 403 777-8060
and dial extension “1” to leave a message indicating your child’s name, name of your child’s teacher and reason
for absence or late. This line is checked frequently throughout the day. If your child is absent or late and we
have not received a phone call or other notification from you, we will attempt to phone you at home or at
work to ensure your child is safe.
School Playground and Supervision
Supervision is provided on the school playground between 8:45-9:00 a.m., recess and lunch time. Please
do not drop off children prior to 8:45 a.m. as there will be no supervision. There is no after school
supervision. Morning Kindergarten students dismissed at 11:45 a.m. should play on the community
playground after dismissal, as the school playground and fields are often used for outside physical
education activities on a daily basis and are accessed by lunchroom students. After school all children
should proceed directly home.
Security
The main door of the school is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. All other doors
remain locked during the day so we can monitor who enters our building. Anyone visiting the school, including
parents are required to sign-in at the main office.
Parents are asked not to access the school building through the rear student entry doors at any time.
Parents wishing to volunteer or visit their child’s classroom should make arrangements in advance with the
teacher and enter through the main office. Should you need to speak with the teacher please check at the
front desk and our receptionist will be happy to contact the teacher.
SCHOOL PROCEDURES AND SERVICES
Arriving Late and Leaving Early
If your child is going to be late please notify the school at 777-8060 (press ‘1’). Late students should
enter the school through the late doors (S3) which are located by the creative playground up until 9:15
a.m., (not through the main office); report to their classroom so that the teacher is aware they have
arrived at school safely. The teacher will then have the child proceed to the office so that they are not
marked absent. If students arrive at school after 9:15 a.m. they need to enter through the front doors
and report to the main office.
If a student needs to leave early (eg. for an appointment), a parent or other adult must go to the main
office and record the early departure on the Student In/Out sheet. All students leaving during school
hours will need to be signed out. If students are leaving over lunch hour and normally stay for lunch please
send a note or sign the student out and meet them in the main office.
Assemblies
Parents are always welcome to attend. Assemblies will be advertised through the newsletter and through
the classroom teacher.

Backpacks
Each student is encouraged to use a backpack to carry things between home and school. The regular use
of a backpack ensures that books, student agendas, homework, and other items are protected from the
elements and returned to school and home in good condition.
Bussing
The distance from the student’s residence to Tuscany School determines bussing eligibility for
transportation. Eligibility has changed from the “walk limit” to a “transportation service area”. The change
eliminates the 1.2 km walk limit and implements a transportation service area within the 2.4 km provincial
limit. There are numerous variables involved in determining bus eligibility, including taking the following into
consideration:
1 Grade configuration of the school
2 Community boundaries
3 Natural hazards and barriers
4 Roadways and infrastructures
There are many homes close to the transportation service area but are inside the boundary. Those close to
the boundary line may be able to access transportation as “conditional” bus riders if there is space available
on the bus. This will be determined by the bus company sometime in October.
For student safety at the bus stop and on the busses, students are to:
1 wait well back of the curb for the bus to arrive
2 use safe behaviour at the bus stop at all times
3 wait for the bus to stop before going to the curb
4 line up and access the bus quietly and in single file, once the bus stops
5 refrain from playing close to the curb.
6 obey the rules and directions given by the driver
7 sit facing front at all times while the bus is in motion
8 have all body parts inside the bus
9 talk using quiet voices only
10 avoid roughhousing with other passengers
11 make alternate arrangements for transporting large projects that will not fit in a backpack
12 leave sports equipment (hockey sticks, goalie pads, baseball bats, balls, etc.) at home.
If you make alternate travel arrangements for your child and they will not be riding the bus, please ensure
you notify the office by emailing tuscanybus@cbe.ab.ca advising the office how the student will get home.
If a child is going home with another student after school, a note must be received in the office from both
families authorizing the arrangements.
Please also remember parents are required to make “Back Up” plans with their children in case a bus is
late or does not arrive to pick up students. This is especially important during extremely cold
weather. Parents are encouraged to check the “Bus Monitor” online for the latest information of bus
schedules. Parents will not be notified of late or cancelled buses.
Celebration of Learning, Volunteering, Performances or Field Trips
Students will no longer be signed out early from special events as the main office is unable to manage the
large number of students this may involve. In the interest of student safety and in preserving learning time,
students are to remain in their classrooms following one of these events until the dismissal bell rings. At
this time students can be picked up at their usual exit doors or outside from their bus line.

Dress Code
Standards of dress and grooming are expected to be respectable and appropriate. Any headwear such as
hats, scarves or bandanas, will not be allowed in the school except for religious reasons. Clothing with
improper messages or logos will not be permitted.
Please refrain from sending your child/children to school in strapless or tank tops, or short-shorts or skirts.
Games, Toys and Webkins
For safety reasons students are asked to leave lacrosse sticks, hockey sticks, etc. at home. We would also
advise that expensive electronic equipment and toys stay at home. We encourage all students to leave
electronic games at home. A focus on physical activity and cooperative play is encouraged at recess and
lunch time. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Games, toys and webkins must be kept in
student’s backpack during instruction time and through entry and dismissal times, to and from school.
Games, toys, webkins etc. should not:
1 Create distractions in class for the owner or other students.
2 Cause students to miss teacher instruction at entry and dismissal times.
3 Create or contribute to student disputes for any reason
Should any of these situations occur:
1 The student will be requested to put the game, toy or webkin away.
2 Should this occur a 2 nd time the teacher will take the item away and return it at the end of the day.
3 The 3 rd time a problem occurs with a toy, game or webkin, the teacher will take the item away and it
will be returned to the parent only and the student will no longer be able to bring it school.
4 In any situation that creates an issue either in the school or outside on the playground, there will be

no determining of who is responsible for the problem. The process noted above will be followed as
outlined for all students involved.
Health Services
Calgary Health Region supports our school community by providing nursing services on a limited basis. If, for
any reason, you wish to refer your child to the nurse, please send a note to your child’s teacher and we will
arrange a meeting. The nurse is responsible for organizing the immunization program required for our
students. You will be contacted if your child is due to have immunization.
Homework
The Calgary Board of Education makes recommendations about homework in Policy and Regulation 3066.
Assigning homework is up to the individual teacher, but students and parents are encouraged to set aside
some regular time each evening for home study or recreational reading.
Learning is an ongoing process. Sometimes students require extra time to complete given tasks or assignments and
that can result in homework being assigned. The time spent on homework completion should be commensurate with
the complexity of the task and the ability of the child to accomplish the task. Every child is different and
therefore the homework one student is required to complete may look different than that of another student.
Educational research suggests that daily reading and writing in authentic tasks helps to increase academic
achievement. Students in grades 1-3 should be reading and writing each day as part of their homework assignment.
Extended Absence Homework
Throughout the school year, there may be times when parents need to take their children out of school for
extended periods of time. As opposed to having teachers create homework for the student, where learning will be
out of context, while the student is away from the classroom, parents are encouraged to have students:
a) read every day and keep a log of their reading
b) write each day (lists, directions, letters, postcards etc)
c) practice math facts in a variety of fun ways
d) create a photo journal of their trip that would include facts and information about the location of
your trip but also some history and unique traditions of the region you are visiting. This can be
organized into a journal shared with the class on the return of your child.
e) Access your child’s classroom D2L shell online for a comprehensive Extended Absence Plan.
Should you have any questions about the homework your child is doing, please contact your child’s teacher.
Indoor/Outdoor Shoes
In order to keep the school clean and safe, children are required to keep a pair of running shoes at
school for indoor use only. These shoes must have light colored soles. If students are unable to tie
their own shoes they should have slip-ons or Velcro straps.
Lost and Found
The school is not able to safeguard valuables brought to school by students. Please encourage your
children to keep toys and other personal items at home. For easier identification, please label all
articles of clothing, lunch kits, etc. We do have a charity box where all lost or left items will be placed
that students and parents can check. The contents of this box will be boxed and donated to the
Salvation Army or other charities periodically throughout the year.
Lunch Program
Lunchroom supervision is provided to all students in grades 1-3 who have registered and paid the yearly fee.
Bussed students are charged for the lunch supervision and required to complete a registration form. Bus-

eligible but non-riding students must register and pay for noon supervision. It is entirely a user pay service.
Lunch supervision fees are a tax-deductible childcare expense.
Students bring their own lunches from home. We are unable, in the interest of time and safety, to provide
microwave or hot water service. Children are welcome to bring hot food to school in a thermos.
Tuscany School offers a supervised lunch program. Lunchroom supervision will be provided to students in
the gathering space in two sittings: 12:00 to 12:30, or 12:30 to 1:00. All students eat lunch at tables or
desks. Please ensure that lunch kits are labeled with full names and that students have appropriate
outdoor clothing.
Parents who have not yet registered their children for the lunch program, please do so during the first
week of September. Unfortunately we are unable to provide drop-in services due to the large enrollment in
the program.
Please remember to call the lunchroom line 403 777-8060 extension 3 to report full time lunch users going
home.
When signing students out at lunchtime, we ask that you do so by 11:45 a.m. We need to know that your child
is safe with you. If you have any concerns, please contact the school office.
Student expectations in the lunchroom
1 Bring their own lunch.
2 Walk quietly to the lunchroom area.
3 Wash/sanitize hands.
4 Sit down at their designated spot.
5 Talk quietly.
6 Stay in seats.
7 Listen and follow the requests of the lunchroom supervisors and adult caregiver.
8 Treat both students and supervisors with respect and courtesy.
9 “Please and Thank you” will be encouraged and expected.
10 Use appropriate table manners at the lunchroom table ensuring a pleasant, safe and secure
environment for all students and supervisors.
11 Clean up after oneself.
Lunchroom supervisors and teaching staff treat all students with dignity, kindness and respect. In the event
students engage in inappropriate behaviours in the lunchroom, students will be asked to correct their
behavior immediately. Students will lose the opportunity to be a member of the lunchroom program in the
event that inappropriate student behaviors are ongoing or detrimental to the safety and security of both
students and adult supervisors.
Walking Children Going Home For Lunch
Students who go home for lunch should not return to the school before 12:45 p.m. The lunchroom staff
provides supervision for those students in the lunch program before this time. Teachers are on supervision
duty from 12:45 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. for all children. Returning students must access the school grounds and
play on the main playground where supervision is available. Please do not have students line up at 12:45 p.m.
at the south or east doors as there is no direct supervision. Students going home for lunch on inclement
weather days may access the building through the main doors on their return.

Newsletters
Newsletters will be posted on our website (www.cbe.ab.ca/b393) during the 1 st week of each month. An
email will be sent to the parent’s email address when the Newsletter has been posted. It is very
important that you keep your email address updated with the school.
School Council
As a parent or guardian, you are eligible to be a member of the School Council. The School Council and the
School Administration work closely together to support the initiatives and goals of both the school and
the council. This is the primary vehicle where parents provide input and feedback to the School
Administration and where many decisions regarding events and programs are made.
Please try to attend a council meeting to get a better understanding of the workings and organization of
the school. Meetings take place monthly usually every 2 nd Thursday of the month, at 7:00 p.m. with the
TSES Meeting following. The School Council will post parent information in the school and on the website.
Telephones
Please ensure that your child has arranged after school plans with you before coming to school, as telephones
are designated for school business. Students may use the phone in cases of emergency or at the request of a
staff member.
For safety reasons we are not allowed to confirm the enrollment of a child at our school over the telephone.
This becomes very difficult when parents phone to ask us to pass along messages, as we cannot always
identify the caller. If your child needs to go to a location other than home at dismissal time please make
these arrangements ahead of time and with the classroom teacher if possible. A note in the agenda is very
helpful and greatly appreciated.
Cell Phones
Cell phones should be turned off at all times when in the school. Students’ cell phones are to be kept in their
backpacks at all times during instructional hours. Absolutely no pictures or videos of students or school
activities should be taken using cell phones without teacher direction and approval. Failure to obtain
permission will result in loss of cell phones being brought to the school.
Volunteers
Volunteers at Tuscany School play a very special part in our educational programs. Your help enables us to
enrich learning and teaching in a number of ways. Children are provided with extended opportunities
individually and in small groups. Programs are enhanced immeasurably with resources and materials that
volunteers help provide. We ask that volunteers turn off cell phones in the school and refrain from texting
while volunteering.
Volunteer registration and security clearance is required for all volunteers. The process of registering as a
volunteer consists of two parts. The first is the completion of a Volunteer Registration Form and photo ID.
By completing this form the volunteer agrees to abide by the conditions that protect the safety,
confidentiality and working environment of the school. This form needs to be completed every school year.
The second part is the completion of the Consent to Search and Disclosure of Personal Information Form
that permits the Calgary Police Service to perform a criminal record check. This form is valid for five
years. These forms are available at the school office. Volunteers are not able to volunteer in the school
until the security clearance is complete and all documentation is on record. Please note Calgary Board of
Education policy, which indicates that siblings are not able to accompany volunteers when they are working
in the school.

Behaviour Policy
As a staff, we wish to prepare children who are responsive to the needs of others as well as themselves, are flexible
enough to change behaviour in response to a situation, and who behave appropriately because they feel it is the
right thing to do. The CBE Educational Results Policy identifies expected outcomes that each student, in keeping
with his or her individual abilities, are expected to achieve as a result of their time in our schools. Our Behaviour
Policy addresses the following Board of Trustees’ Policy - Results.
Each student will possess the character to do what is right, act morally with wisdom, and balance individual
concerns with the rights and needs of others. (Pg. 2, CBE Three-Year Education Plan 2011-2014) Our task is to
create an environment in which each student has the opportunity to become an engaged learner, prepared for
success in life, work and future learning. (p. 4)
**Please read and discuss this policy with your child(ren) and return to the school signed. *
