Beyond this World and With It – Ascension Sunday<br />

A Message from Fr. Mike<br />

The First Communion ritual really speaks volumes about the nature of Easter. Parents have their children so nicely<br />

dressed. The children are prepared to receive the Eucharist with complete excitement. The children are both of<br />

heaven and with us on Earth on this beautiful day.<br />

Jesus’ ascension has him traveling from our world yet somehow staying a part of it. Only with the eyes of faith can<br />

we see and hear Him. When we see Him, no other person is more radically with us.<br />

The bishops of these United States have kicked off a two month campaign entitled Fortnight for Freedom<br />

(http://usccb.org/issues-and-action/religious-liberty/fortnight-for-freedom/). In this campaign they wish us to take a<br />

look at the first amendment and advocate for a separation of church and state especially regarding the mandate for<br />

health care coverage. There is great concern that parts or the whole of Catholic Institutions may be forced to pay for<br />

government care that is against our church teaching (especially of concern is abortion in all of its forms).<br />

This is, of course, a complicated question as the Catholic Church has been advocating for many years for a right to<br />

health care for all citizens. So now we need to be with the need for health care yet apart from the moral challenges of<br />

particular forms of health care.<br />

Perhaps we can think this through by looking at our constitutional documents:<br />

Preamble to the Constitution:<br />

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic<br />

Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty<br />

to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.<br />

The First Amendment<br />

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;<br />

or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to<br />

petition the Government for a redress of grievances.<br />

Some look into these basic documents and only see the extremes of libertarianism and communism. In reality, they<br />

contain a balance of both. We see that people will want to freely assemble to look after the welfare of the whole but<br />

also want to have independence from others. Perhaps it is the human condition to be with and apart – depending<br />

upon our mood or our self interest.<br />

So why is Jesus both with us and apart from us? He wishes us to be the Body of Christ. His presence gives us hope<br />

that we can know reconciliation. His going before us encourages us to say our own yes to the Holy Spirit and boldly<br />

express God’s love.<br />

When it comes to health care – it seems we are called to unity of purpose in caring for the welfare of all while still<br />

saying no to the sin of abortion.<br />

When it comes to state politics – it seems we are called to say no to the sin of deficit spending while allowing people<br />

to freely assemble.<br />

With Jesus Christ we can do both, for He does both. We can say yes to being fundamentally with each other while<br />

allowing independence necessary for healthy relationships where we can challenge each other’s sins.<br />

Once again, with Jesus Christ, all things are possible.<br />

Hope Unites Us Anew Update<br />

The energy for this campaign is continuing to grow. We have had a good amount of families<br />

commit to this campaign. Their donation per family is excellent and so we are already<br />

over $400,000 of our $600,000 campaign.<br />

Now we need to get as many of our families to participate as possible. Here are two options:<br />

Individual and small group visits. We have some individuals who are prepared to<br />

come out to your home or small group to present what we are planning to do with this<br />

new parish center. They can also talk through and assist you with different ways to<br />

contribute. If you wish to have this, please call the Parish Center or Fr. Mike at 920-<br />

887-2082.<br />

Phone calling campaign. We are looking for volunteers who would like to use a<br />

script to contact families that have not committed to this campaign. We will not be<br />

targeting seniors in our parish but instead people around Fr. Mike’s age. A simple,<br />

friendly script has been developed that you can use at your home or at our offices with<br />

small groups of callers. Again, you can contact the Parish Center to volunteer.<br />

The whole point of this effort to build a new Parish Center is that it would unite us as<br />

never before. For that reason, even a small donation that is a responsible amount for you would help us build up<br />

this team called St. Katharine Drexel Parish.<br />

Let us pray through Pentecost, next Sunday, that the Holy Spirit will be generously poured upon our parish that<br />

we can accomplish all that God has called us to do to grow in faith and service to the world!<br />

These framed sketches are the result from your earlier vote. There were four specific items indicated that you, the parishioners,<br />

wanted to see in the window. They were:<br />

Simplify the border around the window.<br />

St. Katharine Drexel looking at the children.<br />

Both studios were given these directives and requested to submit one more sketch for your approval.<br />

Design #1: The border has been simplified; St. Katharine Drexel is looking at the children, her feet are not showing, and the<br />

Eucharist is represented at the top center of the window. You will notice three churches are shown at the bottom of the window, just<br />

above the grass line, which represents the merging of the parishes. The finished size is 4 foot by 8 foot, with a two foot arch at the<br />

top of the window. The black line on this design is a stabilizer bar and will not be visible when the window is completed.<br />

Design #2: In this window, St. Katharine Drexel is the focal point. The border is simplified, representing the “old” to blend with the<br />

other windows. The Eucharist is represented by a modern contemporary version, which represents the “new”. The churches in the<br />

background represent the merger. The three crucifixes on top of the churches represent Calvary and the crucifixion of Jesus. The<br />

finished size is 4 foot by 8 foot with an arch at the top.<br />

Both studios use a safety-laminated glass or an energy efficient window to protect the window from the elements. Only the best<br />

foreign and domestic hand-selected stained glass will be used. Where the colors appear to be opaque does not necessarily mean<br />

the color in the final window.<br />

These are sketches. The window itself will show more hand painted detail. As you study the sketches, look at the detail to help<br />

decide what you would want in your window. While something may appear too large or too small, remember this is a much smaller<br />

version of the window. We can “tweak” the sketch, but moving an item from one sketch and putting it in the other one is not an<br />

option.<br />

Both stained glass studios are very reputable and have been in business for many years. Having worked with both studios, either<br />

one would provide us with a beautiful window. The bid cost is approximately $125, but did not include the opening of the wall for the<br />

window placement.<br />

Remember, the final decision is YOURS. Voting will take place through May 27. Once the votes are in, the selected sketch will<br />

appear in church, and the result will appear in the bulletin.<br />

Cheese Cake<br />

SKDS Band Guild has Cheese Cake for sale!<br />

We are offering two ways for you to enjoy the Cheese Cakes this summer. You can pre-order a whole<br />

cheese cake now and pick it up after Mass the weekend of July 7& 8 or you can come on down to the<br />

Women’s Auxiliary Craft Show on Sunday, July 8, and enjoy a slice or two while you shop. Maybe you<br />

want to help support the school band by doing both.<br />

The cost of a whole Cheese Cake is $19.00 and it comes as a variety pack (3 slices of the following flavors:<br />

vanilla, triple chocolate, turtle, and strawberry swirl)<br />

An interest has been expressed to develop a quilt for our church in celebration of<br />

our 150th Anniversary and the 10-year anniversary of the merger of our parishes. It<br />

has been expressed that this quilt relates to all three parishes as they were and our<br />

parish as it is today. Photos of the churches can be used in this quilt. If you are<br />

interested in helping with the planning of this quilt, and then the actual making of this<br />
