SECOND BITE
Italian | Barolo
Ritzing It Up
Italian cuisine is no longer a rare
find in Beijing, but the new menu
at the Ritz-Carlton Beijing’s Barolo,
featuring fresh summer tastes, seafood
and truffles, certainly is. The
antipasto plate’s imported Italian
meats and cheeses (¥160) make
an excellent lunch on their own,
but we recommend tasting more.
For an amazing cheese-based dish,
try the rich and visually-pleasing
ricotta dumplings (¥120), served
with gorgonzola fondue and black
truffles. The sea bass ravioli with
mint and pistachio sauce and tomato
sorbet (¥120) were deliciously
refreshing and perfect for hot
With framed paintings of Lao
Shanghai cover girls hanging
on the wall and old-timey songs
humming in the background as if
played from a gramophone, this
little restaurant is a great place to
escape the chaos of the modern
city and travel back in time to
1930s Shanghai. The distinctive
menu is a shallow box with two
rows of wooden boards. Customers
order by turning over the
boards with the names of their desired
dishes. The beautiful décor
is only surpassed by the great traditional
Shanghai food. We loved
the “cheese fish,” made from milk
and eggs ( 干 酪 鱼 , ¥8), bamboo
shoots and steamed rice with
soup ( 竹 荪 捞 饭 , ¥18) and lychee
fish balls with shrimp ( 荔 枝 鱼 球 ,
¥28). You’ll find pears in almost
every dish here, which adds a deliciously
sweet touch. Don’t forget
to try a cup of their well-known
and refreshing xiaodiao pear soup
( 小 吊 梨 汤 , ¥8).
weather. Perhaps most impressive,
though, was the sea salt-crusted
rack of lamb (¥230), presented in
a loaf of salt and flour that was cut
away from the meat before being
served. Far from just tasting salty,
the lamb was tender and flavorful.
For a memorable dessert, finish
with the lemon panna cotta, served
in a bowl of the sweetest fresh
strawberries and blueberries (¥80).
Keeping Things Classy
Tucked away in a far corner of the
Beijing Global Trade Center, Class
caters to a local crowd with fresh
ingredients and solid renditions of
contemporary dishes. The modern
interior, dominated by simple
furniture and offset by mirrors
hanging from both the
walls and ceilings, is reflective
of the cuisine—creative without
straying too far from the
classics. Take, for instance,
our starters from the ¥99 set lunch
menu (¥78 for two courses): spiced
Moroccan chickpea soup and
Caesar salad with garlic anchovy
dressing. The unconventional
soup was zesty and chock-full of
veggies with a North African flair.
The Caesar salad was traditionally
prepared with a generous serving
of both dressing and parmesan
cheese. Our main course of brown
sugar and soya-glazed salmon with
beurre blanc was exquisitely prepared,
though the side of rice was
dried-out. The baby back ribs with
pommes frites were a delectable
NEW
combination of crispy, savory potatoes
and tangy, meaty ribs. Lastly,
we enjoyed a flavorful, if slightly
undercooked, espresso crème brulee
and a mouth-watering gin and
The fantastic
espresso came as
no surprise
lime tart with vanilla ice cream.
The manager, Adam, takes great
pride in his coffee, which can be
seen from the many gourmet coffee
machines in the entryway (some
on sale for an eye-popping ¥25,000),
so the fantastic espresso (¥19)
came as no surprise. With a healthy
mix of carefully-sourced, preciselyexecuted
menu offerings, Class is
a hidden gem on the North Third
Ring Road.
