TH ORN BU RY'S SCHED U LED M O N U M ENT
OCTOBER
201-1-:
by Dave Rowley
fi S of 9 August 201 1, Thornbury became the proud possessor of its very
/t1own scheduled monument!
What is a scheduled monument A scheduled monument is an
archaeological site or structure that is considered by English Heritage to be of
national importance.
What is the purpose of scheduling a monument The primary purpose is
to preserve it for the future and to protect and manage it appropriately.
Scheduling is the highest level of statutory protection that can be afforded a
monument. lt is a criminal offence to disturb a scheduled monument by
carrying out works without consent; to cause reckless or deliberate damage to
a monument; to use a metal detector or to remove an object found at a
monument without a licence from English Heritage.
What is this monument lt is not Thornbury Castle or St Mary's Church; it is
actually the Medieval Fishponds complex located at Park Farm. These are a
series of eight interconnected ponds used to raise and store fish in the
medieval period. lt is likely that the ponds as we see them now were
developed as part of the Duke of Buckingham's grand plans for his Thornbury
estate. However, it is thought there were pre-existing ponds (probably dating
back to the creation of the Manor of Thornbury in the 13th century) that were
"improved" by the Duke to make a statement. The Duke would have seen
developing this complex of fishponds as another symbol of his status, like the
large deer park in which they were located. This "New Parke", which he
created from around'1508 onwards, ran around the castle from the south at
Kington Lane, westward to Parkmill Farm, and then north to Butt Lane.
Why was it scheduled English Heritage gave the following reasons for the
scheduling:
* Survival: they survive particularly well, with many of the pools retaining
water, and are an especially intact and numerically large group, retaining a
range of features.
" Historic: fishponds are very representative of large-scale animal husbandry
during the medieval and post medieval period. As such they have
considerable historic interest. The historic interest of the fishponds at
Thornbury is considerably enhanced by their association with Thornbury
Castle (listed building Grade l) and its formal gardens (a Grade I Registered
Park and Garden of Special Historic lnterest) and the medieval deer park.
* Potential: the likelihood of water-logged deposits means that the site has the
potential to retain an especially good range of artefactual and environmental
evidence.
* Amenity Value: the fishponds are accessible to the public on a permissive
basis, with an information board explaining their historic and environmental
interest.
* Rarity: intact groups of fishponds are relatively rare nationally.
Can I visit the site Yes, thanks to the goodwill of the landowner the public
has full access to the site for the purpose of "quiet enjoyment". They just ask
that you treat the site with due respect and do not abuse it in any way. The
main entrance is on the western side of Manor Walk alongside the millstream.
Can I get involved with the site lf you are keen to help then you can
become a member of the Friends of Park Farm Medieval Fishponds. This
group was set up in March 2011 to help monitor, maintain, promote and protect
the fishponds. lt works in close collaboration with South Gloucestershire
Council and the Thornbury Avon Wildlife Trust group. lt organises
maintenance work parties and events that help to raise awareness of the
fishponds. The group is free to join. lf you are interested then either email
FriendsofPFMedFishponds@qmail.com or contact Dave, Tel. 412941. a
NEYYS AROUND
LIVING FOR ONE WORLD What does that mean Find out at "Living for One World"
in St Mary's shopping centre on Saturday 22 October from 10am-12 noon. There will
be drama by "Your Call" and information stalls from Thornbury and District Make
Poverty History group, Christian Aid, Shared lnterest, Sustainable Thornbury and
Thornbury Harvest Co-op, plus drama at the URC coffee morning. ln addition, at
Thornbury URC on Sunday 23 October at 11am, Reverend Mary Piggott willfollow this
therne. Here are some views from One World Week to start us thinking.
Living for the planet: Valuing the planet and all life forms - to damage the
environment is ultimately to harm us. Our lifestyle and attitudes must work in cooperation
with nature. Global warming is affecting crops that communities depend on.
Climate change is also likely to be responsible for the increase in weather-related
disasters which have devastated the lives of countless people around the world who are
already struggling with poverty. We must share the burden of adapting to a changing
climate and care for the planet now before it is too late. Living for its people: One of
the causes of suffering and poverty is greed. We must share our resources and respect
people everywhere. We are all interlinked and part of each other. Our actions can
have profound effects on others; the smallest action can have a ripple effect to bring
positive change. We must ensure that food is not wasted. Nobody in the world should
go hungry. Living and acting for change: Our actions can change the world as we
choose what we eat, what we buy, how we travel, how we use our money and time.
Acting together, such as by signing petitions and communicating with decision-makers
and holding them to account, gives us collective power to influence change towards a
fairer and more environmentally sustainable world.
THORNBURY CHORAL SOCIETY will be hosting a talk on Mozart's glorious Requiem
by musicologist and conductor Philip Robinson. The Society will be performing the
Requiem as one half of their concert on Saturday 26 November, together with
Schubert's Mass No. 3 in B flat in The Castle School at 7.30pm. The presentation looks
at Mozart, his character, family and relationships. We hear of his travels throughout
Europe and his search for permanent employment. We will gain a feel for his highly
productive period in Vienna and then his decline, ending with the Requiem. How much
of the Reguiem did he actually write What happened to it after his death This will all
be covered through a multimedia presentation. We will hear music from different parts
of his life, watch scenes from his operas, hear excerpts from his letters and see clips
from a variety of performances of the Requiem. Philip gave an excellent talk on
Handel's Messiah a couple of years ago, also under the auspices of Thornbury Choral
Society. The talk will be held at Alveston Methodist Church, Greenhill Road, Alveston
at 7.30pm on Wednesday 19 October and is open to all-comers. Tickets cost f6,
including tea/coffee/juice and biscuits and are available from Jos Gregson, 1e\.411652,
or by email ios@josgregson.plus.com.
THORNBURY PICTURE HOUSE The new season of world cinema continues with two
extraordinary and contrasting films. The Conceft, on 7 October is a warm-hearted
comedy describing the ploy of a once famous Soviet conductor purged by the KGB in
1980 for employing Jewish musicians, who takes the chance to employ his outcast
musicians and reform the orchestra in order to play in Paris. Winter's Bone is the hardhitting
story of a Missouri teenager faced with the daunting task of resolving the
disappearance of her father in order to retain the family home. The film's country music
score emphasises the melancholic and brutal world in which they live. Both films are in
the Cossham Hall starting at 7.30pm. f5 at the door for non-members.
adoption of its new name and logo at a special Autumn Concert to be held on Friday 7
October at 7.30pm in the Armstrong Hall, with a formal ceremony in the presence of
Councillor Gill Brooks, Mayor of Thornbury and Chair of the Town Council. For the first
time at one of its own concerts, the band will be using new music stands kindly
sponsored by Thornbury Lions Club.
An entertaining evening includes a cinematic first-half performance by the band with
music from the films, and special guests the popular and engaging Octaves Choir.
Featuring during the interval will be melodious barbershop strains from the awardwinning
QuarteTones Capella quartet. The evening continues with a second-half
programme of lively and traditional Proms-style favourites chosen by the band's MD,
Darren Williams, with plenty of opportunity for audience participation. A great musical,
convivial and fun evening is on offer. Tickets cost 16 and are available from the Tourist
LAST CHANCE TO HEAR THE RAMBLING BOYS Following on from their muchappreciated
appearance at Mumping Night last Christmas, popular folk and bluegrass
quartet, The Rambling Boys, are giving a fundraising concert in aid of the RNLI on
Saturday 19 November. The "Boys" (now all holders of bus-passes!) formed in 1967
and for five years followed a hectic lifestyle visiting folk-clubs and RAF stations all over
the East Midlands. When career moves led to a break-up, they got together
occasionally over the next 20 years until bass-player Mike Speake, having moved to
Thornbury in 1977 , talked them into performing here at a party. RNLI secretary Robert
Thompson then had the bright idea of a gig in aid of funds and so The Rambling Boys
were re-born. With John (banjo) and Mel (guita| living in Nottingham, Brin (mandolin)
in Bridgwater and Mike here in Thornbury, getting together was never easy but
somehow the old songs were still there and new ones proved easy to learn. Since 1998
they have performed in various parts of the country and made no fewer than eight
appearances in Thornbury.
However, Mike and his wife Sue have now moved away to the Cotswolds, meaning
that the local connection is severed, but not before they have one last fling in the
Cossham Hall. lf you like to listen to close-harmony folk, country and bluegrass music,
with a fevr novelties and plenty of humour (even if it sometimes makes you groan), then
come along on Saturday 19 November at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. There will be plenty
to sing along with and your ticket price of f7.50 will include refreshments at half-time.
And of course all profits will go towards saving life at sea. Tickets can be obtained by
calling 417095 or from Finishing Touches at the rear of Hawkins.
JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR The Armstrong Hall will soon see another opening of
another show as Thornbury Musical Theatre Group brings the iconic Jesus Chnsf
Supersfar to town. There is a buzz of excitement in the air as opening night
approaches and every department gears up to make sure this is going to be a show to
remember. The excitement has been added to by the fact that the group has received
two nominations for the Evening Posf Rose Bowl awards. Chris Dixon-Lewis has been
nominated for the Aardman Animations award as Best Actor (musical) for Dr Henry
Jekyll and Mr Edward Hyde in Jekyll and Hyde. Those who saw Chris will agree it was
a great performance and he will be appearing again for TMTG as Pilate in Jesus Cfrn'sf
Supersfar. The second nomination is for the Coup de Th6atre Award (a special
moment in theatre) for the very clever filming and projection of the orchestra under the
stage after the final curtain in Jekyll and Hyde. This was the work of the very talented
technical team a,nd director David Wrench who is also directing Supersfar. The results
A POTTED HISTORY OF THORNBURY RFC sent in by Dave Fox
D)UGBY was played in Thornbury back in Victorian days but the club
I \struggled to survive and eventually folded in the late nineteenth century.
Thornbury Rugby Club as it is today was founded in 1963 by a handful of rugby
enthusiasts working on major engineering projects in the north Bristol area.
With no obvious local club to play for the original members, which included the
father of future England international Simon Hodgkinson. decided to form their
own and after advertising for player,s in the local newspaper played their first
games in September 1963.
The first home game was a 9-9 draw with Whitehall played on the Mundy
Playing Fields. The club continued to play there until in 1965 they secured a
loan to buy land at Cooper's Farm on the northern outskirts of the town. lt has
remained the very happy home of the club ever since.
This season, Thornbury will play in South West One West, the level 6 league
featuring clubs from Gloucestershire, Somerset, Devon and Cornwall. lt is a
level they have played at before. ln 2003 they secured promotion to South
West 2 West as it was called then, but chose to stand by their ethos of not
paying players and after a tough but enjoyable season they dropped down a
level. However, Thornbury are a forward-looking club with realistic ambitions.
Thornbury remains a popular social sporting club. They field three senior
sides, Colts and an occasional veterans side. ln addition, Thornbury has a
thriving juniorsection which sees teams from seven to under-17, plus girls and
ladies teams. Thornbury are one of the few clubs in England to have Level
Two Seal of Approval status from the RFU for their development of rugby at a
junior level. lt is remarkable to see so many children having fun playing rugby
on Sunday mornings at the club.
Thorns have had several players play international rugby at a schools level
but none to date have gone the extra step and gained a full senior cap.
Former Connacht and lreland squad centre Darren Yapp began his playing
career at Thornbury, whilst Billy and Mako Vunipola, who are respectively in
the Wasps and Saracens squads, have played schools rugby for England and
are tipped for bright futures. Mako recently played for England in the Under-2O
World Cup and played regularly for Bristol last season alongside Wayne
Thompson, who is also a former Thornbury player.
ln 2008/09 Thornbury had a mixed season but made the rugby headlines by
becoming the first side in over four years to defeat the seemingly invincible
Hartpury College league team. At the end of the season former Wales
international Gareth Llewellyn joined the club as head coach. ln his first
season Thornbury narrowly missed out on promotion but in 2010/1'1 they went
one stage further and following a rousing 54-7 play-off win over Devon side
Kingsbridge, Thornbury gained their deserved promotion. The new season
sees many challenges for Thorns but their ranks have been bolstered by the
arrival of Rob Higgitt, a former professional player with Bristol, the Scarlets and
Worcester, who will perform the dual role of player coach. More information on
the club website at www.thornburyrfc.com. o
A MAORI VISITOR TO THORNBURY
lN 1841 Edward Biddle and his wife Ann (ne6 Leach) emigrated from
I Alveston to New Zealand, to start a new life. A year earlier the Treaty of
Waitangi had been signed, founding New Zealand as a nation. Although there
has always been some dispute about its exact terms, the Treaty established a
British Governor of New Zealand, recognised Miori ownership of their lands
and other properties, and gave the Mdori the rights of British subjects.
Edward and Ann had five children and their fourth child, Benedict Benjamin,
married a Miori, Mauri Poiakino, the only one of the siblings to do so. Earlier
this year, having done some family history research on the internet and
discovered her Alveston roots, Benedict's great-great-granddaughter, Meriana
Taputu, arrived in England to meet her Biddle relations and stayed in
Thornbury with Brian and Joan (nee Biddle) Proctor. Meriana is the Principal
of a small Mdori school near Lake Taupo in New Zealand's North lsland.
There is just her and one other teacher, and 29 students, ranging from the age
of five to eleven.
Meriana proved to be a very lively and interesting visitor, with many stories to
tell of her life in New Zealand. She was eager to do as much as possible while
she was here and was delighted by everything she saw. Something she
particularly wanted to investigate was that peculiarly British institution, the
allotment. Allotments do not exist in New Zealand, except that is, on television,
in another great British institution which has found its way there - Coronation
Sfreef. Having watched Jack Duckworth escaping from the stresses of home
life to his allotment, Meriana wanted to see what a real one looked like.
Thornbury has the perfect example in Dagg's allotments so Brian and Joan
took her to see them. Meriana was amazed and impressed and was soon
deep in conversation with one of the allotment holders, even telling him how
she would cook some of the plants he regarded as weeds. Meriana seems to
have impressed him as much as his allotment had delighted her, as he later
went round to Brian and Joan's house to give her a copy of Robson's Rhymes,
a small book of his own poems.
Naturally, Meriana was taken to visit Alveston to see The Square, where one
of the cottages had been her ancestors' family home. The "Biddle Book", a
large tome recording the family history, specifically mentions the Alveston
pump in The Square, and Meriana was eager to see it. She made the
acquaintance of Mr Curtis, whose family has lived on The Square for
generations. At first he was sceptical of her assertion that she was a Biddle
descendant, because of her strong M3ori looks. "No you're not!" he said,
emphatically (or words to that effect!) However, once convinced that her claim
was genuine, he invited her to come and see the inside of his cottage, which
still retains many of its old features.
While being driven through the town of Brecon on a day out in the Beacons,
Meriana spotted a policeman and was intrigued by his helmet. She
immediately wanted the car stopped so that she could get out and talk to him,
and asked if he would agree to be photographed with her. When another
policeman appeared, Meriana roped him in as well, and went away very
23
pleased at having been photographed with two British bobbies.
Meriana's friendliness and openness seems to have made a lasting
impression on everyone who met her. At the end of her visit, members of the
extended family got together for a reunion at The Fox lnn at Old Down, where
the landlord is also a Biddle. Meriana was delighted to meet so many of the
family she had first discovered on the internet, and is already planning a return
visit, hopefully bringing her husband and two grown-up sons with her. o
(This story was told to Pauline Montgomery by Joan and Brian Proctor)
ENGLISH WORDS IN A HOLIDAY HOTEL
I T was off to Austria again this year - a truly lovely country to spend time in
lwith superbly beautiful scenery - pastureland, forests, rivers, lakes, hills and
mountains. The people are friendly and helpful, the accommodation is good
and the meals are excellent - and of course, music of all kinds to be enjoyed.
The second hotel we stayed in was of the traditional Austrian style of building -
lots of pine, and geraniums in the window-boxes. lt was, however, very up-todate
in many respects. On each breakfast table each morning was placed a
"Daily Newsietter", which had four 44 pages well-printed and illustrated with
drawings and photographs. This gave information about the locality,
excursions available, a weather forecast and various snippets of suggestions
and ideas for guests. Two pages were in German and the other two were
English translations. Whoever had done the translating had done a very good
job overall, but one particular piece of information about a trip to a special
place of interest came out in English as "Very interesting and absolute the best
you have ever expired". We all giggled a bit over that one and I don't think
anyone went on that trip - just in case we wouldn't come back-,
ln the very well presented booklet about the hotel itself, there are four
sections - in German, English, ltalian and Russian. All give information about
the very many aspects of the hotel's operations and services in relation to
guests. One small paragraph had a truly intriguing heading - "Sorrow Box".
ihe paragraph showed that this was their way of describing a "Suggestions
Box" as iistated "At the front desk. Please let us know your opinion about the
hotel in general - negative as well as positive. lt helps us to find out mistakes
and to make your stay a little more enjoyable". We didn't get round to even
looking for the Sorrow Box - it was probably an old pinewood box, handpainted
with pictures of edelweiss and deep blue gentians, with ladies in dirndl
skirts and men in lederhosen. However, a friend we made while there said he
was going to write a complaint about the small two-slice toaster which slowly
and eveniually turned white bread to a sandy colour - understandably he felt
that a relatively large hotel providing for many guests at breakfasttime could
do with a couple of larger toasters. Despite the excellent large baskets
overflowing with fresh bread rolls and breads of many types and tastes, he is a
man who likes his four slices of toast in the mornings, no matter what country
he is in. Perhaps all homes and business premises here should have "Sorrow
BOxeS" - much better to write your "Sorrgw" On a scrap Of paper, than a mere
"suggestion". o
A LETTER FROM THE VICAR OF ST MARY'S AND ST PAUL'S CHURCHES
People ask me if I am finding my feet as the new Vicar. Well - l'm really
enjoying getting to know people, and I have been able to reflect on my
experiences so far during August. My role is not meant to be confined to
churchgoers but to the whole community, and I do hope people willfeel free to
get in touch as the days and weeks go on. I am beginning to recognise people
in the town, but please do come and have a word if you see me about, and
please excuse me if it takes time to get to know everyone.
The congregation at St Mary's and Sf Paul's have been filling in a
questionnaire about church life - everything from the times of servlces to the
proposed re-ordering of St Mary's Church. The answers will be analysed and
will be a very useful help in making plans for the future. I am very grateful to
Tim Giles for setting the questionnaire out so well, and to all those who have
taken the trouble to fill it in. lf other members of the community in Thornbury
would like to complete a form, please do let me know (Tel. 418425). The form
ls a/so available online at the parish website.
ln Octoberwe welcome Sheila Fisher as an asslstant priest in the Benefice,
to work alongside me and Bruce Godwin and all our readers and retired
pn'esfs. lt is good to be working with so many gifted and experienced people,
and to be able to offer parishioners a wide choice of ministry.
ln mid-October we will be beginning a course for enquirers about Christianity
which will explain the faith and give a solid grounding in Christian belief. Faith
is a gift and is a matter both of heart and mind, and we want to share faith in
the living Christ with all. Scepfics and believers alike will be welcome, and all
age groups will be catered for. Please get in touch if you might be interested.
Every good wish for the "season of misfs and mellow fruitfulness".
A FEW HAPPENINGS
'N
OCTOBER OVER THE YEARS
The year 1066 is a date known to most people as that of the Battle of Hastings. lt
was 14 October in that year which saw the culmination of the struggle between William
of Normandy and Harold, the son of Earl Godwin, to be successor to the late King
Edward the Confessor, with the death of Harold in that battle. lt was on 25 October in
the year'1400 that the writer Geoffrey Chaucer died at his home in the gardens of
Westminster Abbey. He had been a diplomat and civil servant, but he is best
remembered as the author ol The Cantehury lales. The composer of one of the bestknown
melodies ever written, The Blue Danube waltz, was born in Austria on 25
October 1825. He was Johann Strauss the Younger and he composed a large amount
of memorable music, including the opera Die Fledennaus, and is commemorated by a
golden statue in the Stadt Park in Vienna. Another great musician, Fryderyk Franciszek
Chopin, who was born at Zelazowa Wola nearWarsaw in Poland, died in Paris on 17
October 1849 at the age of 39. He was a virtuoso pianist and fine composer. Across
the Atlantic Ocean the Statue of Liberty, designed by Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi, was
inaugurated in New York Harbour on 28 October 1886. lt was on 31 October 1926 that
the famous escapologist Harry Houdini (real name Erik Weiss) died in a Detroit hospital
at the age of 52. About a year later, on 6 October 1927 , the first film with a sound-track
(a "talkie") was screened in New York. Starring Al Jolson, it was the film The Jazz
Singer. 5 October 1936 sawthe beginning of a march by 200 unemployed men from
the shipbuilding town of Jarrow on Tyneside to London, bearing with them a petition
with over 11,000 signatures declaring the plight of the people suffering from the effects
of unemployment. Thirty{hree years later on 5 October 1969 television viewers
watched the first of the Monty Python's Flying Circus programmes which brought a new
kind of satirical entertainment. lt was on 12 October 1984 that the Grand Hotel in
Biighton was devastated by the IRA bombs which caused death and injuries to
members of the then Cabinet and others, at the time of the Conservative Party
Conference. ln 1993 on 13 October, the then leader of the ANC in South Africa, Nelson
Mandela, and President F.W. de Klerk, were both awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in an
acknowledgement of their efforts to build a peaceful, multi-cultural South Africa.
