through the efforts of volunteer
professionals and support staff.
We are able to do this with the
generous support of United Way,
churches, individuals, foundations,
groups and businesses who share
our vision. The Clinic is committed
to providing compassionate care to
individuals with unmet healthcare
needs in an environment that
maintains the dignity of each
patient.

DeCola first came to St. Luke’s clinic
because she was having chest pains.
At the age of 26, she was unable to
walk a full 10 minutes without
stopping. “I became extremely
winded, and was having a real hard
time keeping up with my young
daughter. I knew I was overweight,
but I didn’t know how bad it was until
I stepped on the scale at St. Luke’s”,
she said. Dacola weighed in at 465
lbs. “The Doctor told me there was no
use in crying, patted me on my back,
and said he was going to help me get
the weight off.”
After running some tests, and clearing
her of any heart issues, volunteer Dr.
Melvin Medlock developed a plan.
“He put me on a diet and prescribed
walking as exercise. The walking
was slow at first, but I kept at it and
followed that diet exactly as it was
written”, she said. Six months later,
Dacola weighed in at 299 lbs. “St.
Luke’s really jumpstarted my life”,
Dacola says. “I hadn’t worked since
I was 18 years old. When you are
as heavy as I was, depression sets in
and you just don’t care. After I lost
the weight, I was able to get a job
and insurance and had motivation
to keep working.” After a few years,
she decided to go back to school and
applied at Virginia College. “I had
always wanted a medical career, and
had dreamed of becoming a physician
when I was younger. I’ve always been
smart, but before I got healthy, what
I had on the inside didn’t match the
outside.” She was accepted into
Virginia College’s Medical Assistant
program. All students are assigned an
externship, and Dacola was assigned
to St. Luke’s.
“When I found out where my
assignment was, I was so excited.
I toured the clinic with a group of
other students, and was
overwhelmed with emotion. I
couldn’t believe I was going to get
a chance to give back to the place
that had helped me so much. I kept
running into the bathroom to cry, and
I know everyone thought I was crazy!
I’m so happy to be a part of the team
here at St. Luke’s. It’s good to be back
in this building. When you’re here as
a patient, you don’t realize just how
hard the staff and volunteers work.”
Dacola hasn’t yet reached her goal
weight, but with the help of St. Luke’s
Free Medical Clinic and a 166 lb.
weight loss, she is well on her way.

Dear Friends,
We are pleased to share this report of our activities and performance during the
year 2011. Much of our energy and attention has revolved around two questions:
How have we responded to the rise in demand for our services? And, how will
health care reform impact how we deliver care?
As to the first question, with your help, we have eliminated a very long waiting
list and have been able to increase the number of patients served through
an encouragingly resilient volunteer/staff operating model. More than 250
professional and lay volunteers worked with our dedicated clinical staff to serve
approximately 2000 individuals. Collaborations with other similarly focused
partners have helped us carry out our mission of providing quality medical care
to the uninsured population of Spartanburg County.
The response to health care reform is more complicated. While the expansion of
Medicaid in 2014 will provide many more patients with a method of paying for
care, estimates are that 6% to 7% of the population will continue to be uninsured.
Even those covered by Medicaid will still face challenges in gaining timely access
to primary care due to longstanding practitioner shortages in this area. St. Luke’s,
along with other free clinics across the nation, will need to look at innovative and
more effective ways to serve those who are left without healthcare coverage.

and helped us to increase access to health care for the uninsured of our community.

HIGHLIGHTS
• The Clinic provided a total of 12,612
visits to 2000 individual clients, all
of whom reported to be living at or
below 150% of the Federal Poverty
Level, which for a family of 3 is less
than $28,635 annually.
• Continued its dedication to giving
quality medical care at no charge
to patients. Care is coordinated
around the needs of patients, using
a process that allows for immediate
referral to arrange other appropriate
services from qualified, volunteer
professionals.
• Provided diabetes education and
nutrition classes for patients.
• Organized a patient walking group on
Monday and Friday mornings.
• Began a partnership with Presbyterian
College School of Pharmacy,
establishing a pharmacotherapy
clinic at St. Luke’s which is staffed
by practice faculty. Specifically, this
faculty member focuses on diabetes
patients, educating them about their
disease and medications – and setting
goals for their individual health.
• Began partnership with Virginia
College, providing externships for
Medical Assistant students.
• Established a partnership with South
Carolina Colon Cancer Prevention
Network, a statewide screening and
research program which provides
screening colonoscopies for patients
at St. Luke’s.
• Established partnership with Edward
Via College of Osteopathic Medicine.
First year students assist with evening
clinics.
• Continued partnership with
AccessHealth Spartanburg, providing
in-clinic patient appointments and
specialty referrals.
• Continued partnerships with Wofford
College, Converse College, and USC-
Upstate School of Nursing.
• Continued as a site for Benefit Bank
of SC, an online service designed
to secure funds and services for
individuals and families working to
overcome poverty and to build longterm
financial stability. Assisted
St. Luke’s patients in securing over
$28,000 in benefits they did not know
they were eligible for.

is given in honor of Howard K. McIntyre,
whose generosity and commitment to providing
healthcare for the uninsured helped establish
St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic in 1992. This year,
we honored retiring Medical Director Dr. Fran
Kunda for her many years of faithful service.
She has cared for patients in the Clinic with
undying compassion and kindness. Dr. Kunda
began volunteering at St. Luke’s as a medical
student, and has remained a dedicated and
valuable part of the volunteer team.

position of St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic of Spartanburg, Inc.
(a non-profit organization) as of December 31, 2011 and
the related statement of activities, statement of functional
expenses, and statement of cash flow for the year ended.
These financial statements are the responsibility of the
Organization’s management. Our responsibility is to
express an opinion on these financial statements based on
our audit.
We conducted our audit in accordance with auditing
standards generally accepted in the United States of
America. Those standards require that we plan and
perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance about
whether the financial statements are free of material
misstatement. An audit includes examining, on a test basis,
evidence supporting the amounts and disclosures in the
financial statements. An audit also includes assessing the
accounting principles used and significant estimates made
by management, as well as evaluating the overall financial

In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above
present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position
