from your Course Leader
www.ucreative.ac.uk
Welcome to the School of Architecture at UCA
Canterbury. I am writing to say how pleased we
are that you have accepted the offer of a place
with us. You are joining an exceptional course
with a highly enthusiastic body of students. This
letter provides you with further information about
your course.
In the first year of the course in Interior Architecture
and Design a range of Studio Design Projects run
alongside Technology & Environment, Cultural
Context and Media & Communications which are
taught through lectures, seminars and workshops.
All these areas are assessed in isolation and/or
alongside one another and each of these counts
towards your end of year results. You will receive
a detailed timetable during Induction Week.
We enclose a number of documents that you
should become familiar with and act upon where
necessary. The University’s Registry Department
will be in touch with details of how to enrol
online. The Induction Week Timetable provides
a schedule of activities for the first week of the
academic year. These include times for inductions
to all new students entering the University in the
use of key facilities within the campus.
The attached Summer Project acts as a starting
point for your course, introducing some of the
issues that we will be working on during the year.
Please complete this project over the summer
period as you will present it during induction
week.
In the second term we run a study trip. You will
find that some of the urban spaces, buildings and
exhibitions that we see on this relate both to your
design projects and essays and we hope that you
will find the trip inspirational. We will provide
further details of the itinerary, the costs and the
ways in which the trip is to be arranged later in
the first term. In previous years trips have been to
Rome, Vienna, Berlin and Paris.

A welcome from your Course Leader
www.ucreative.ac.uk
It is important that you bear in mind from the
outset of your studies in Architecture that some
costs are involved. The course includes selfdirected
reading and making which require
various materials and tools. An order form and
list of essential manual drawing and modelling
equipment for your course from Chromos is
attached to this letter, our local and regular
stationary and graphics equipment supplier.
We have arranged a special, reduced price with
Chromos for Material Packs of this equipment for
incoming UCA School of Architecture students.
You are of course welcome to purchase the
items on the list from elsewhere if you are able
to obtain a better price. However, I should stress
that all students will need to start using the range
of equipment covered by the list from the first
week of the term.
In order to purchase the equipment from
Chromos, you need to complete the order form
and post it to them with your payment details or,
if you prefer, order online. Please don’t send it
to us! In order to ensure that Chromos delivers
the purchased equipment for the start of the
semester, your order and payment need to reach
them by the end of August.
In addition to the essential equipment, there will
also be an ongoing need to purchase paper, model
making materials and some construction materials
as well as to print drawings and photographs for
the various set studio projects. You will find that
many materials and printing facilities are available
to you on campus at highly competitive prices
and that the local art supply shops offer student
discounts. However, even with this in mind, it is
wise to budget approximately £500 for costs in
these areas over the course of the coming year.
During the three years of the course you will
also clearly need, and want, to purchase digital
equipment. We advise that, for the moment, you
don’t purchase expensive computer equipment
until you’ve received our recommendations
for the specification of hardware and software.
However, if you have done so already, do bring
whatever you have to Canterbury. Similarly, bring
with you any other art and drafting materials that
you already have.

During the year, we will issue short reading lists
that support the studio projects. For the most
part, the books on these reading lists can be
found in the campus library. For the start of the
first semester, we would however advise that you
purchase the following books:
Spatial Portraits

7
Summer project
This is intended to be an enjoyable introduction to
some of the issues that we will be discussing and
developing over the coming year. It will primarily
introduce you to the challenge of representing
space - a process that is vital for your chosen
discipline of designing three-dimensional
environments, as well as, introduce you to the
process of exhibition and review that all design
schools share.
To do
Construct a three dimensional portrait of:
• your CITY;
• your HOUSE;
• your ROOM.
Material & technique
Use only white cardboard/heavy weight paper
to build three reliefs representing three spaces:
your city, your house and your room. A relief is
a sculptured artwork where a modelled form is
raised (or lowered) from a plane from which the
main elements of the composition project (or
sink).
For your three spatial portraits, you might stack
and glue different layers, you might cut out
certain areas, or you might cut and fold parts of
the cardboard/heavy weight paper plane. Please
do not use any additional materials.
Elements to represent
www.ucreative.ac.uk
It is up to you to define the phenomena you want
to depict in your reliefs. The following is just a list
of elements that you could include in your spatial
portraits:
•CITY: the topography of the (surrounding)
landscape / the silhouette of the urban roofscape
/ landmark buildings that represent your city /
the soundscape of the local birds / etc.
•HOUSE: the facade or a relief-plan of the
building you live in / a diagram of your family’s
movement (parents, brothers and sisters, cats
and dogs etc.) / a representation of the staircase
and how it is used / etc.
•ROOM: the view from your window / important
pieces of furniture / a map of your working desk
/ a 3D representation of your music collection
/ a sculptural version of the last book you have
read / etc.

8
Summer project
Format & display
The size of each relief is A3 (420mm x 297mm).
Use the same orientation for all three reliefs (i.e.
landscape or portrait orientation). Remember that
it is important to use the same white card for all
three reliefs so that they look like a set
Presentation
All reliefs will be exhibited within the School
of Architecture, giving you the opportunity to
introduce yourself to the whole year group, when
presenting your three dimensional portraits.
Glossary of Terms
RELIEF: Term (Italian: rilevare, ‘to raise’) applied
to sculpture that projects from a background
surface rather than standing freely.
According to the degree of projection, reliefs are
usually classified as high (alto rilievo), medium
(mezzo rilievo), or low (basso rilievo or bas-relief).
The name rilievo schiacciato is given to a form
of very low relief invented by Donatello and
memorably used also by Desiderio da Settignano.
Another distinctive type of low relief was used by
the ancient Egyptians, figures being carved within
deeply incised outlines rather than projecting
beyond the surface. It is sometimes called cavo
relievo or sunken, incised, or coelanaglyphic relief
(Greek: koilos, ‘hollow’, and anagluphe, ‘work in
relief’).
