4 A welcome from your Course Leader www.ucreative.ac.uk It is important that you bear in mind from the outset of your studies in Architecture that some costs are involved. The course includes selfdirected reading and making which require various materials and tools. An order form and list of essential manual drawing and modelling equipment for your course from Chromos is attached to this letter, our local and regular stationary and graphics equipment supplier. We have arranged a special, reduced price with Chromos for Material Packs of this equipment for incoming UCA School of Architecture students. You are of course welcome to purchase the items on the list from elsewhere if you are able to obtain a better price. However, I should stress that all students will need to start using the range of equipment covered by the list from the first week of the term. In order to purchase the equipment from Chromos, you need to complete the order form and post it to them with your payment details or, if you prefer, order online. Please don’t send it to us! In order to ensure that Chromos delivers the purchased equipment for the start of the semester, your order and payment need to reach them by the end of August. In addition to the essential equipment, there will also be an ongoing need to purchase paper, model making materials and some construction materials as well as to print drawings and photographs for the various set studio projects. You will find that many materials and printing facilities are available to you on campus at highly competitive prices and that the local art supply shops offer student discounts. However, even with this in mind, it is wise to budget approximately £500 for costs in these areas over the course of the coming year. During the three years of the course you will also clearly need, and want, to purchase digital equipment. We advise that, for the moment, you don’t purchase expensive computer equipment until you’ve received our recommendations for the specification of hardware and software. However, if you have done so already, do bring whatever you have to Canterbury. Similarly, bring with you any other art and drafting materials that you already have.

For the most part, the books on these reading lists can be found in the campus library. For the start of the first semester, we would however advise that you purchase the following books: •Steen Eiler Rasmussen (1964), Experiencing Architecture, Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press •Francis D.K.
