Welcome to Australian Catholic University (ACU) 

- one of Australia’s fastest growing Universities 

and the largest Catholic university in the English 

speaking world. ACU is a national University, 

with campuses in Brisbane, North Sydney, 

Strathfield, Canberra, Melbourne and Ballarat. 

ACU has always been about giving students 

quality at a highly competitive price. We have 

used the Government’s new strategy to pursue 

the participation imperative to build a critical 

mass of students here on your campus 

(McAuley at Banyo) through a variety of 

exciting and engaging values based programs. 

In recent years we have invested in the 

development of our campus to support 

these programs. This has included a new 

biomechanics laboratory in 2010 and a new 

Exercise Science building in 2011 and our new 

multi-disciplinary Health Clinic last year. 2013 

will see the addition of our new car park and our 

new Sports Court to name but a few. 

ACU has always held its students at the heart 

of its world. When we ask our students what 

they value highly one point that comes back 

time and time again is our commitment to the 

individual.

Orientation is a fun and informative way of preparing you 

for uni. Your attendance is essential for you to make the best 

possible start when the semester begins. 

Why should I attend Orientation 

Orientation is a great way to meet other students and get 

information about all ACU has to offer. Orientation Week 

is designed to help you make the best start at uni. The 

Information Sessions and events offered are a great way 

to help familiarise yourself with the campus, meet other 

students, talk to teaching staff, locate classrooms, learn 

about the library, discover ACU’s social and community 

networks and much, much more. Feedback from students 

who have attended previous Orientation programs shows 

that they found it immensely useful. 

Get involved 

Getting to know other students can be daunting. An easy 

way to make friends and feel connected is to get involved 

in activities – join our McASA student association, clubs and 

societies. Take up some of the opportunities offered in our 

Semester Calendar.

Office of Student Success is all about ensuring 

student life at ACU is fulfilling, by successfully 

working with students to meet their personal 

and academic needs. Services include:

Academic Skills Unit 

Academic Skills Unit assists undergraduate 

and postgraduate students to develop 

independent language and learning 

strategies. Assistance is offered to both local 

and international students regarding a wide 

range of academic issues. Academic Skills 

Unit can help you learn more about time 

management, academic reading, academic 

referencing, giving presentations, assignment 

writing and preparing for exams. 

Campus Life 

Campus Life staff support the development 

of the University community through the 

facilitation of a rich, enjoyable, diverse and 

caring campus culture. They invite students, 

staff and the wider community to engage in 

a vibrant and dynamic campus life. Campus 

Life activities include weekly social and 

recreational activities (lunchtime soccer, volley 

ball, yoga, Pilates and Zumba), annual cultural 

events, assistance with clubs and societies, 

state and national sporting opportunities. 

Counselling Service 

Counselling assists students to understand 

and assess their issues in the broadest 

possible ways to enable the best possible 

outcomes. Counselling sessions provide 

students with an opportunity to discuss 

any issues of concern within a supportive 

relationship. This experience can often lead 

to insight and clarity that usually ease anxiety 

and pain. The Counselling Service can assist 

students with the personal dimensions of 

appeals, reviews, leave of absence, withdrawal 

and course transfer. The Service also provides 

referral to and information about welfare and 

various community services. 

Equity and Disability Unit 

ACU is committed to promoting access and 

equity for students with disabilities or longterm 

medical conditions, and aims to provide 

an environment in which all students can 

participate fully in the life of the University. In 

support of this aim, Disability Advisers provide 

an assessment and planning service and 

coordinate adjustments to meet the needs of 

students with disabilities. 

Career Development Services 

Careers advisers are available on Brisbane 

campus to assist enrolled students with 

career development and/or employment 

related decisions. The Career Development 

Services can assist you with developing skills 

and knowledge to plan and manage your 

career, making informed career decisions, 

mapping possible career paths relating to 

your choice of study, strategies, advice and 

resources for optimising your employability 

and getting a job along with many more 

aspects of your career.

Library 

The library houses a wide range of books 

and other items such as flip video cameras 

and iPads for loans. The library also provides 

online access to a large collection of eBooks, 

eJournals and subject specific databases. There 

are computers, laptops, scanners, printers and 

photocopiers available for use, inter-campus 

and reciprocal borrowing is available for all 

students; inter-library borrowing is available for 

higher-degree students.

Campus Ministry 

Campus Ministry is part of the Directorate for 

Identity and Mission and is responsible for 

animating the faith life on ACU Campuses. 

The Brisbane Campus ministry team’s mission 

is about bringing the distinctive Catholic 

identity and mission of ACU to life. Campus 

Ministry is involved in offering prayer, 

reflection and retreats, student-led faith 

discussion group “Alegria”, World Youth Day 

ACU Pilgrimage (students), ACU Wired - 

ACU’s student radio station, social justice and 

community engagement, and exploring the 

Mission of ACU. 

Eucharist is celebrated three times a week on 

campus, with reconciliation and adoration 

available. The Brisbane Campus Ministry Team 

is located at Building G, level A. 

IACE 

Community Engagement is a distinctive 

feature of your educational experience at 

Australian Catholic University. The Institute for 

Advancing Community Engagement (IACE) 

provides a focus for community engagement 

and coordinates and initiates programs and 

research in the area. For further information

SOCIAL 

Your first week at university may feel a little 

daunting – new faces, an unfamiliar campus 

and reams of information to absorb. Here 

at ACU, we’ve put together a fun-fuelled 

schedule of Orientation activities making it 

easy for you to meet new people, familiarise 

yourself with university life and have a lot of 

fun in the process. Find out more about these 

activities at the information stands outside I 

Block and at Market Day in the alfresco area 

(next to cafeteria). Be sure to visit the McAuley 

Student Association Stall and the various 

clubs and society stalls. Don’t miss out on your 

chance to get involved! 

Weemala 

Weemala is the Indigenous Unit at the 

Brisbane Campus of Australian Catholic 

University, McAuley at Banyo. Weemala, 

which is a Torres Strait Islander word for 

‘distant view’ – to look into the future, was 

established in 1989 to assist Aboriginal and 

Torres Strait Islander people in their pursuit 

for tertiary education. Weemala offers social, 

cultural, personal and academic support to 

students whilst undertaking tertiary study in 

an environment which promotes a positive 

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity.
