What you need to know about
Latex Allergies
Latex allergies are a growing concern for
patients and healthcare workers alike. While
various reports indicate that up to 8% of the
general population is allergic to latex, the
numbers are much higher among workers who
are exposed to latex in the healthcare (17%) and
dental (40%) professions. In addition, up to 80% of
spina bifida patients are latex sensitive. For those
with sensitivity or allergies, exposure to products
containing latex can result in skin rashes, hives, nasal,
eye or sinus symptoms, asthma and in rare instances,
shock. The National Institute of Safety and Health has
issued a warning to all workers that allergic reactions
may occur through exposure to products containing
natural rubber latex and the FDA has recently
mandated that all medical devices
(including latex exercise bands)
that contain latex must be labled
with warnings. Many leading
medical facilities, including the
Mayo Clinic, have banned use of
latex products entirely.
