Late Arrivals @ School
With the recent chilly mornings we‘re still seeing a large number of
students arriving late for school. Attendance at school every day gives
your child the best opportunity to do well. Just a little bit doesn‘t seem
much but ……
He / She is only
missing just….
That equals…. Which is….. & over 13 yrs of
schooling that’s...
10 mins per day 50 mins per wk Nearly 1.5 wks per yr Nearly ½ year
20 mins per day 1hr 40 mins per wk Over 2.5 wks per yr Nearly 1 yr
Half hour per day Half a day per wk 4 wks per yr Nearly 1½ yrs
1hr per day 1 day per wk 8 wks per yr Over 2½ yrs
Secured Money Deposit Box
To ensure the security of money received for school payments, a
secured money deposit box has been installed at the school office.
Families/students are asked to now deposit all money for school
payments in the deposit box before school, as classroom teachers will
no longer be collecting monies.
Traffic & Parking Reminder
We ask that parents/carers please obey the traffic laws
when driving your children to and from school. Parking,
driving in restricted areas, and dropping and picking up
children in the school precinct is again on the agenda.
Parking illegally and driving through the staff carpark area
is a safety risk for our children, so please take care when
driving & parking. Consider arriving a few minutes earlier so you have
time to walk your children a little further if you can‘t get a legal park
near the school gate. Our school has welcomed the TravelSmart
initiative to help reduce traffic in the school precinct and we encourage
all our school families to use TravelSmart options to get to and from
school.
Science Bright Sparks
This week I had the opportunity to see some great
work from Chrissy Pobar‘s Year 5 class. The students
have been studying the adaptations that animals have
made that enable their survival. Chrissy‘s class have
then extended their knowledge and understanding by
selecting an animal, researching the adaptations and then redesigning
the animal to make it more effective in its habitat. The demonstrated
knowledge and their final constructions/models of their animal was
such thoughtful and creative work. Well done Year 5P!
POMONA KING OF THE MOUNTAIN RELAY
This popular event takes place Sunday 22 July. SBSS will be
entering teams in the Schools Relay. This is a 4 X 700m road run
relay around the Pomona Park. Any interested students are asked to
RUGBY UNION NEWS
Well done to our very keen U/12 rugby union team. These boys
have been playing a 15 a side game on Mondays at the Noosa club
grounds over the past few weeks. Spirited defence and scintillating
attack has been the hallmark of their very successful campaign
against Victory College and St Thomas More. It has been pleasing
to see their commitment at training which is reflected in their good
performance on the rugby park. We wish Ben, Zac, Will, Callum,
Luke, Zane & Darcy well at the District Trials on Thursday 7 June.
The team has one more game in Week 10 to complete rugby this
term. Next term will see the U/10s involved on a Monday and the
U/12s compete in a one day carnival against 5 or 6 other schools
in the district. After the Wallabies loss to Scotland on Tuesday its
time SBSS provides the nursery ground for our budding Wallabies
of the future. Thanks to Peter Allom & Richard Hozier for their
wealth of rugby knowledge imparted on the boys during lunch
times.
TRAVELSMART NEWS with JESS LEWIS
Ride to School Challenge 12-16 March - SBSS
had 33 students take part in the ‗Ride to School
Challenge‘ held in Term 1. The average daily bike count was 23.2
bikes in the racks. Taking into account the other modes of travel
like scooters, skateboards etc., this might not be a true reflection of
the amount of students riding to school. The winner of the lucky
raffle held during the Ride to School Challenge was Diogo
Fonseca (6MC) who won a brand new bicycle! Diogo also rode to
school every day during the challenge. Keep up the great work!
What a big TravelSmart blitz you all had recently, with 3 activities
during the same week: Hands Up Survey, Cycle Skills (Year 4s) &
Walk Safely to School Day. A big thank you to Sallie Bond for
helping to organise all of these events. The Hands Up Survey
Results for the week of 21 - 25 May are: Walk 13%, Cycle/Scooter/
Skate 13%, Bus 32%, Carpooling 6%, Car 36%. A total of 64% of
the school, took a Travel Smart mode of transport to school during
this week. SBSS, you are a great example of a TravelSmart
School.
Last week, all Year 4 classes took part in the TravelSmart Cycle
Skills Program. Designed to upskill learners with practical &
theoretical knowledge, the course teaches learners how to ride
safely on & off road cycle pathways. Cycling is a life skill & a fun
way for your child to keep fit & healthy. We hope that all the Year 4
learners found the program valuable and will enjoy a lifetime of
confident cycling.
Walk Safely to School Day - what a fantastic turnout! Thank you
to Sallie Bond & the other TravelSmart helpers for assisting in
promoting Walk Safely to School Day on Thursday 24 May. 312
SBSS learners & their families took to the pathways on bikes, feet,
skateboards & scooters, arriving at school with fresh air in their
lungs, energised & ready to make the most of the day. Every
participating student received a Walk Safely to School Day sticker
& a raffle ticket to win TravelSmart prizes. The lucky winners were:
Jye Candy (7JB) - Ripstik & helmet voucher; Fynn Thompson (2LP)
backpack & pencils; and Eva Peeters (PMP) - backpack & pencils.
CHAPLAIN’S CORNER
I have never been prouder to be associated with SBSS as I was
last weekend, when a group of 18 school staff & parents/carers
participated in the Relay for Life team ―Sunshiner‖. After being
registered for less than a week we managed to raise over $1000
towards the overall fundraising effort of $25000 towards cancer
research. A big thank you to all who volunteered their time and
donated money to this wonderful event. I hope you all come back
again next year! If you would like to make a donation to this
worthwhile cause, go to www.relayforlife.com.au/team sunshine to
make an online donation.
P&C PRESIDENT REPORT
Hi all, hope you are gearing up for the long
weekend? I am still seeking a team of at least 25
parents/carers who would be prepared to join a subcommittee
to organize a school Fete. If we can put together a
committee this year we might have a chance of hosting a school
fete in 2013. If you are interested just email me at solver@madcs.com.au.
Congratulations to all those who participated in the
Cancer Council Relay for Life last weekend. I hope that it was as
successful as everyone anticipated. We have one more P&C
meeting left for this term on Thursday 14 June at 7pm in the
staffroom. Hope to see some new faces there. Remember, you do
not have to be a P&C member or even join, to be able to come to
the meetings.
P&C FUNDRAISING REPORT
We are nearly at the end of term 2 and there are
many things happening for which we need a little of
your time. By now you should have received
communication about the change of date for our
Trash n Treasure sale to Saturday 21 July.
Spaces are only $10 and you do not have to be a
parent/carer from the school to host a stall. So if
you know of any wider friends or family that would
like to have a stall send them the information. We have an
opportunity for anyone interested in volunteer involvement in the
Anaconda Adventure Race to be held on 11 & 12 of August. We
are still seeking your votes for both the SCRC Living Smart grant
& the Ezyplant grant. If you could help us with both of these that
would be fantastic! Please remember us when shopping at
Woolworths (collect stickers) & Sunshine Plaza (receipts to
customer service desk or hand into school reception). We are
still collecting old mobile phones and Pauls milk bottle caps, so
please keep sending them in to the office with your learner.
P&C FUNDRAISING REPORT (CONT.)
Finally, all learners should have received a $25 voucher to use at
Athlete‘s Foot (Noosa Civic store only) – one per learner. Let us
know if your learner did not receive one from school. For more
information on any of these activities, email me at solver@madcs.com.au
or call on 0438 541 642.
COMMUNITY NEWS
ARE YOU CONCERNED ABOUT YOUR CHILD’S EATING OR
MEALTIME BEHAVIOUR?
The University of Southern Queensland (USQ) is seeking
parents of children aged 5 to 9 years, who are concerned about
their child’s eating or mealtime behaviour to participate in a
study. This project is looking at how children of different ages eat,
strategies used by parents/carer, & what they think and feel about
their children‘s eating behaviours, in order to inform better
assessment and treatment of children with eating issues of various
ages. Participation involves completing an on-line survey, which
takes approximately 30 minutes. All responses are anonymous.
Parents who complete the survey go into the draw to win a cash prize
ranging from $50 to $100. This project has received ethical approval
