2012
On behalf of Tal-Ko I have great pleasure in welcoming you back to Kimbolton circuit – the
birthplace and home of this famous karting event!
As ever we have our special format which puts the emphasis on giving you the driver, the
maximum amount of track time. It also gives a true opportunity for everyone from a novice
through to the most experienced driver, to prove their expertise.
To mount such an occasion takes tremendous effort and dedication by the organising team and
we pass on our heartfelt thanks to all the team at Hunts Kart Club who make such a real effort to
maximise the turnout of the circuit – complete this time with many revisions in format since our
last festival here including track resurfacing and a new style grid.
And of course we must also say a very big thank-you to Maxxis for their continued major support
of the event and for supplying us all with some great tyres.
Finally I’d like to say a personal thank you to each and every one of you competing for making
the Festival the karting event of the year. I know many of you have travelled a great distance to
be here. Have some great racing and watch out for yourself on TV.
Good racing, best of luck…and enjoy your weekend.
Tal-Ko History
2012
TKM owner and manufacturer, Tal-Ko Racing, has a long history within the karting world and numerous
UK and International championship titles to its credit.
Originally started in 1958 by Bernie Turney, the company has a fine reputation as an importer of quality
karts and engines, while more recently being the only UK manufacturer of kart racing engines sold
under the TKM brand name for 2 & 4 stroke classes.
Over the years literally thousands of drivers have relied and won on TKM equipment including F1
driver David Coulthard and World Champion Jenson Button, who was a Junior S1 title-holder in the TKM
2-stroke class. Other star drivers like Anthony Davidson, Tom Onslow-Cole, Colin Turkington, Gary Paffett
and Nathan Freke, have more recently graduated from the Formula TKM classes.
Since the death of his father in 1982, the company has been run by Alan Turney, himself a former
top British kart racer and once team-mate to Nigel Mansell in the UK squad. Alan is an engine expert
whose skills have fine tuned engines winning World Championship and British Grand Prix titles.
The TKM BT82 engine used for the Formula TKM 2-stroke classes derived its name from Bernie Turney
as a memorial – BT (Bernie Turney) and 82 – the year he died. The engine was first used in the USA
where it become the dominant force within their categories and took their World Endurance titles.
It was introduced into this country first of all under the title of the 100UK class in 1990. Later the class
became known as Formula TKM.
The TKM K4S 4-stroke engine was introduced in 2000 and was the world’s first 4-stroke engine
designed and developed specifically for kart racing. It is used as far away as Canada and Japan.
In the past few weeks TKM has gained another engine, with its takeover of the WTP 80cc water-cooled
engine – an ultra-modern engine featuring all the latest features coupled with low noise and long life.
Plans are being finalised for the introduction of this engine on a world-wide basis.
So 54 years on from its creation Tal-Ko remains a significant player in karting with its engines used in
many markets around the world, and in the UK with its commitment to providing the best value racing
available through Formula TKM.
Closing Date for the 2012 Maxxis TKM Festival is Saturday 28th July 2012
How it work
Thursday site opens at 9.00am to allow teams to set up for the race weekend.
P O Box 484.Welwyn Garden City.AL7 9HB

Two & Four Stroke
Drivers may compete in 2 and 4 stroke categories, though we cannot make any guarantees
over the gap between the races. You cannot compete in more than one 2 or 4 stroke class. The
categories are Junior 2 and 4 stroke, Senior 2 and 4 stroke.
Clubman, Heavies, Vets
We are updating the classes laid out in our ‘Classic’ class to try to ensure that everyone gets to
race in the most competitive field available.
Clubman
This class will run in line with the Clubman class being run at Shenington and Rissington with a
couple of minor changes which are underlined. This means:
• No karts designed with the use of removable torsion bars are permitted. Karts are not
required to have the original TKM sequential plate in place (unless using old style diagonal
pod bars as per KRYB D3.3.13) but must conform to the original TKM homologation which
will be checked with the original homologation fiche.
• Number plate white with black numbers
• 30mm rear axle
• Sprocket is free
• No TAG engines allowed
• Direct drive or clutch
• Ackerman steering permitted. Stub axles free. Ride height can be adjusted.
• Data logging not permitted except a rev counter with a lap timing facility only.
• CNC cylinders not permitted
• Minimum weight 152kg with driver minimum weight of 68kg or 146kg with a blue
restrictor.
• Competitors must use new control tyres.
Masters Class – for Heavies and Vets
These will run to normal TKM Extreme regulations within what we are calling the Masters class.
This is subject to the Classic age/weight regulation of 165 minimum weight for kart and driver.
Driver to be either 35 years old, or a minimum weight in race suit etc of 80kg.
Dependent on numbers we hope to run the Clubman and Masters classes separately to the
Extremes for heats and finals. At minimum we plan to run the finals separate.
