<strong>Human</strong> <strong>Statues</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Progressive</strong> <strong>Era</strong><br />
<strong>Check</strong>-<strong>off</strong> <strong>Sheet</strong><br />
You and your group will be responsible for researching and creating a<br />
human statue and plaque for one of <strong>the</strong> different groups of <strong>the</strong> <strong>Progressive</strong><br />
<strong>Era</strong>. When it is time <strong>to</strong> present, your group will create your human statue,<br />
hold <strong>the</strong> position for 1 minute, and <strong>the</strong>n come <strong>to</strong> life and have <strong>the</strong><br />
spokesperson for your group read your plaque. Your classmates will sketch<br />
<strong>the</strong> statue and take notes on your group on <strong>the</strong>ir chart.<br />
Step 1: Choose your roles:<br />
Architect – design <strong>the</strong> human statue <strong>to</strong> represent your <strong>to</strong>pic<br />
Spokesperson – writes and reads <strong>the</strong> plaque <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> class<br />
His<strong>to</strong>rical Consultant – researches <strong>the</strong> <strong>to</strong>pic for <strong>the</strong> group<br />
Prop Master – creates all of <strong>the</strong> props used in <strong>the</strong> statue<br />
**Even though everyone has a different role, you will need <strong>to</strong><br />
help anyone who needs it in your group!<br />
Step 2: Research your assigned <strong>to</strong>pic – page numbers<br />
for Texas & Texans are in bold, page numbers for<br />
Celebrating Texas are in italics.<br />

• Farmers Alliance (445, 445)<br />
• Populist Party (445, 445)<br />
• James Hogg (446-447, 447-449)<br />
• <strong>Progressive</strong> Movement (466, 440)<br />
• Prohibition (468, 440)<br />
• NAACP (471, 449-450)<br />
Step 3: Create a human statue <strong>to</strong> your <strong>to</strong>pic. Use your<br />
bodies and simple classroom props <strong>to</strong> represent <strong>the</strong><br />
key elements of your <strong>to</strong>pic.<br />
Step 4: Write a plaque for your statue. Your plaque<br />
should have all of <strong>the</strong> important information on your<br />
<strong>to</strong>pic from your research results as well as how your<br />

group impacted Texas.<br />
Step 5: Rehearse. Your group will need <strong>to</strong> be able <strong>to</strong><br />
form your statue quickly when called upon and read<br />
your plaque in a clear loud voice.<br />
Step 6: Present. While <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r groups are<br />
presenting, you need <strong>to</strong> fill out your chart from <strong>the</strong>ir<br />
plaques and monuments.<br />
Your <strong>Human</strong> Statue will count as a major grade and will need <strong>to</strong> be ready at<br />
<strong>the</strong> beginning of <strong>the</strong> period _______. You will be graded on his<strong>to</strong>rical<br />
accuracy, presentation (props), how well your group works <strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r, and<br />
your plaque. You will also turn in this check-<strong>off</strong> sheet for a daily grade.<br />
