GIFI'S BY INDlVIDUALS<br />

For the 1994-95 fiscal year (July 1, 1994-June 30, 1995)<br />

gifts by individuals to the Department of Chemistry and Biochem-<br />

istry are valued at $30.780. Together with corporate gifts of cash<br />

and in-kind gifts of supplies and equipment, the department re-<br />

ceived donations valued at $131.879. Gifts were received from<br />

177 persons, an all-time high! Cash donations from individuals<br />

ranged in value from $10 to $2,000. Total income from individuals<br />

and corporations amounted to $47,323 in cash and $84,556 in in-<br />

kind gifts.<br />

Because of the fiscal problems of the State of California. sup-<br />

port for the programs of the university, including the Department<br />

of Chemistry and Biochemistry, has dropped dramatically. Only<br />

about 10% of the operating expenses of the department now<br />

comes from the state. The remainder of our needs is met from<br />

non-state sources.<br />

Most of the funds given to the department are used directly<br />

for departmental operations and student support. The following<br />

will give you some idea of what your gifts are used for:<br />

Funds were matched by the university and included travel for<br />

students to attend scientific meetings to present research results.<br />

In addition to the expenditures noted above, $5,000 was<br />

placed in our endowment account, and approximately $4,500 in<br />

pledges for 1994-95 is yet to be received.<br />

On behalf of the students and faculty of the department, we<br />

wish to take this opportunity to thank all who have assisted us in<br />

our efforts to provide the best possible education for our students.<br />

Clearly, without your help the quality of our instructional pro-<br />

grams would have suffered significantly.<br />
