Detroit’s Shining Sable, Deb Cassidy
by Scott O’Farrell
This past February at the National Convention in Reno, Nevada the Sables division of
Safari Club International took the time to honor the cream of the crop. It is with much pride
that SCI Detroit’s Debra Cassidy (yes, wife to former SCI Detroit President Rick Cassidy) was
honored with the Sables award.
Over the last few months I have had the opportunity to work with Deb on several occasions.
I spent four days with her at the Detroit Boat races where she collaborated with the Salvation
Army. Debra organized a spectacular sensory safari in which thousands of visitors were so
fortunate to see and touch. Full animal mounts, animal hides, horns, antlers and take home
goodies for the kids.
For those who have not had the pleasure to see Debra in action I will tell you that you truly are
missing out. Deb’s desire to bring the animals of the world to the eyes and hands of those that
quite possibly will never see them is genuine. Quite frankly she is truly passionate about it.
To see the all of the people admire the animals and run their hands through the hair and fur of
the hides from around the world is really special.
But to see small children approach Deb’s
full bear mount and to hear Deb say “he loves
big bear hug’s” you just can’t help but smile
and appreciate what she is doing.
Debra Cassidy is truly a very hard working and
very special person and SCI Detroit is very
fortunate to have her as the face of Sables.
Thank you very much for all that you do Debra
& Congratulations! You are definitely our
shining Sable!

Targeted Outfitter Dan Taylor, Hilde Hunting Services
by Scott O’Farrell
After shooting a blackbuck on the run at the
age of 10, Dan Taylor was hooked on big
game hunting. This adventure inspired Dan’s
love for the outdoors and he started to set
goals and fulfill them. By the age of 26 Dan
had shot over 25 exotic species, 27 African
species and in the fall of 2008 Dan harvested
a Boone & Crocket Alaskan black bear. This
Gave Dan 18 of the 29 North American animals.
Not only has Dan hunted all around the
world, for several years he took clients to New
Zealand and hunted extensively big game and
waterfowl.
Dan’s extensive hunting in the west has put
him in a great position to organize self guided
antelope hunts in Wyoming. This area has the
highest concentration of antelope in the world.
Dan’s hunters have enjoyed a 100% success
rate for the last 10 years.
Dan Taylor is a life member of SCI and an
active member of both the Detroit and Novi
chapters. Dan is the owner operator of Hilde
Hunting service located right here in Oakland
county. He also works with his father Bob
Taylor. Bob has been a long time supporter of
the SCI Detroit chapter for over 20 years.
Hilde hunting service has access to over 400
acres of private land in Genesee, Oakland and
Lapeer counties. The newest property that
Hilde Hunting has rights to is farm in Oakland
County and Dan has exclusive rights to the
250 acres that is surrounded by sanctuary’s
of government land. This piece has over 80
acres of food plots and 2 large swamps that
go into the sanctuaries. Lets just say it’s a
“Big Buck Heaven”.
After all of the experiences around the world,
they have inspired Dan to start his own guide
service right here in Michigan. Dan started
the business in 2002 and has had many of our
SCI Detroit members hunt with him.

Dan offers hunting for Canadian geese, ducks,
turkey, and deer, including a golf outing with
SCI in October. Hunters will enjoy a few hours
of goose hunting on the course in the morning,
play 18 holes of golf and finish it off with
a steak dinner!
Hilde’s Duck season is October 9th through
December 5th and generally they hunt on
smaller lakes and ponds. The later part of the
season they move to agriculture fields. Just
like their goose hunts they provide all the
equipment and the guides.
Hilde started goose hunting September 1st
and continues to hunt till February 1st. Dan’s
goose hunts are generally ½ day hunts on
private agriculture fields (corn, wheat, beans)
cow & horse pastures and small lakes and
ponds. Hilde provides all the top of the line
decoys, blinds and a professional caller to
insure the best success for all their clients.
Hilde’s whitetail hunts run from October 1st
to January 1st and they have acres and acres
of food plots. Their plots consist of Timothy,
mammoth red clover, alsme clover, turnips,
corn and soy beans. Their blinds range from
tent blinds, elevated box blinds, ladder stands,
and climbers. They can accommodate handicapped
and youth hunters. They use trail
cameras and visual scouting to put hunters
in front of the “Big Bucks”. Included in the
hunts are game removal, filed prep and transportation.
The offer 5 day trophy buck hunts
or hunter can pay by the day.

Hilde turkey hunts are done April through May. The application period is Jan 1st to February
1st. They have had 100% success rate on their turkey hunts for the last 8 years. They hunt
from tent blinds, and also run/gun, which is why our hunts are so successful. Dan says “if the
turkeys don’t come to us, then we will go find them”! Dan is an expert caller and will call those
boy gobblers right in. Dan also has the rare salt/pepper white turkeys available upon request!
If you’re looking for a successful day in the field right here at home, drop Dan Taylor a call at
Hilde Hunting Services and he will personally make sure you are well taken care of! Almost every
board member of SCI Detroit has had the privilege to hunt with Dan Taylor, so if you need a reference
that speaks volumes!

LARRY KELLY
The Pioneer Pistol Hunter
by Scott O’Farrell
Larry Kelly has come a long way from the days in which he would hitch hike from 8 mile & Schoenherr
to outskirts of town to do a little bird & rabbit hunting. Having had work done to several of my rifles
at Manga Port International I was familiar with the stories of Larry Kelly but never had the opportunity to
talk with him. The Kelly’s who own & operate Magna Port International have always be extremely generous
to the SCI Detroit chapter with many donations over the years. Both Larry & his son Ken have served
as board members for the SCI Detroit chapter. This past May SCI Detroit presented Larry Kelly with an
award for international lifetime hunting achievement. I took a minute and introduced myself to Larry.
I told him that I have had the pleasure visiting the pistol hall of fame and seeing many of his trophies.
Knowing that Larry lives out west for most of the year I called Ken to see how long Larry would be in town
for and if he would be willing to spend a couple hours of his time talking. I was in luck, Larry said “sure.”
Ken coordinated things and on a warm afternoon in June I traveled over to Magna Port International to talk
with Larry, which in case you didn’t know, Magna Port houses the Pistol Hall of Fame.

To set the tone for this story I would to start
off by saying that Larry Kelly currently has “56” Top
Ten SCI Trophies to his credit. But, please keep in
mind, Larry has not had any of his trophies measured
for the record book for last 25 plus years…. So with
that being said I am sure he has a couple more hanging
around. Don’t forget all that was with a handgun.
Larry was the first man in the world to shoot &
kill an elephant with a handgun. He currently has 3
elephants in SCI “Top Ten” handgun category.
I asked Larry if he learned to hunt from his father.
Larry said “no, not really”, his dad did take him
hunting a few times for whitetail deer but he really
wasn’t much of a hunter. Larry learned to hunt on
his own for the most part. Growing up on 8 mile &
Schoenherr there wasn’t a whole lot of wildlife, so as
a young boy he would skip school and hitch hike out
to the fields of Novi, Northville and Romeo to hunt
rabbits & birds. Yes, I said hitch hike and yes with
a gun…. Can you imagine Larry enjoyed hunting
birds and rabbits very much. He crossed bred some
Beagles and Walkers to take advantage of traits from
both of the dogs to give him an additional edge in the
fields while hunting.
Larry is a machinist by trade and one of his
companies was contracted by NASA to do the machining
for the Apollo space program. No, Larry
never made it to the moon but many of the parts that
he personally machined did, now that’s impressive.
What’s more impressive is how he ingeniously he
eliminated all of that recoil for us. Larry’s design of
the muzzle brake gave him global recognition. He
not only had international companies interested in the
design he had nations interested in it for their soldiers
arms. I have a 300 Remington ultra mag with
a Magna Port muzzle brake on it I can tell that I am
personally very thankful. During the Patent years for
the muzzle brake Larry’s company fended off some
22 patent infractions from others companies trying to
infringe on the Magna Port Muzzle brake. We are all
thankful for Larry!
Larry has hunted all over the world including
Mongolia, Tanzania, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Zambia,
Mozambique, Botswana, Norway, Yugoslavia,
Argentina, Alaska & Canada. He has been on safaris
that included taking part in killing a man eating
lion and a man eating croc. He has been charged by
almost everything and had enjoyed a quite a laugh
telling me about one particular charging elephant
that was so close he could reach out and touch the
elephant along side of his open door Land Rover,
and in the dark no less. Larry was part of a National
Geographic film expedition called the “Nova
Project”. During that trip Larry harvested his last
elephant the very same one that hangs on the pistol
hall of fame at Manga Port and is in the SCI Top
Ten. One time Larry was hunting brown bear in
Alaska only to discover that he was being hunted
by another Brown bear and ultimately the bear got
into the cabin and had to meet Larry, and………
yes Larry won.
Larry Kelly is a true pioneer of pistol hunting.
Besides being a member of SCI Detroit for more
than 20 years and board member for more than 10
years of SCI Detroit Larry also is a current member
of The Alaska Professional Hunter Association,
American Pistol Smith Guild, Foundation of North
American Wild Sheep, Game Coin Conversation
International, NRA Ruger Collectors Association,
U.S. Revolvers Association & Handguns Hunters
International. If you should ever be in the neighborhood
of Manga Port International do yourself
justice and take the time to stop in and say hello
and view the pistol hall of fames trophy’s that
adorn the walls, it is definitely worth seeing. If you
are lucky you might even see Larry Kelly there.
My last question to Larry Kelly was of
course….. “If you could go on any hunt anywhere
and hunt any species one last time what
would it be” Larry said “well…..if I was healthy
enough……. I would like to go back to Mongolia
and get my Argali sheep that I left there” and that is
another story.
I can’t thank Larry & Ken enough for taking
several hours out of their day to share some
time with me. Larry is a very special guy and
sitting there in the pistol hall of fame listening to
his stories and how his life unfolded was a special
afternoon, it was one of those days that you just
didn’t want to end. In effort to spend a little more
time with Larry I told him that I was a chef & that
I would love to cook him & his family dinner and
in return he would share some more of his great
stories with me.

SCI Foundation Contributes $217,000 to
Big Game Wildlife Conservation Projects
Worldwide In Last Quarter of Fiscal Year
Washington, DC – Safari Club International Foundation
(SCIF) today announced that it had distributed
over $217,000 in the final quarter of its last fiscal year
to fund five critical conservation projects in North
America, Asia and Africa. Specifically, SCIF has dedicated
the funding to managing sustainable wildlife
conservation programs that expand research into the
complex interplay between predator and prey species.
“These funds will go a long way to help expand
SCIF’s efforts as we continue to fund, support, and
manage worldwide programs dedicated to wildlife
conservation, outdoor education and humanitarian
services around the world,” said SCIF President Larry
Rudolph. “A better understanding of predator-prey
dynamic will facilitate best management practices
around the world for continued sustainable wildlife
conservation and management.
In North America:
SCIF continued its support of the Newfoundland
Caribou Strategy, a study designed to understand the
recent decline in woodland caribou in Newfoundland,
Canada. Caribou calf survival is low in Newfoundland,
and predation is the primary cause of calf mortality.
SCIF granted $50,000 to estimate the density
of predators in three study areas by analyzing DNA
recovered from predator hair and scat samples. This
information will assist future predator management
recommendations.
SCIF is also working with the Wyoming Game and
Fish Commission to assess the current status of
moose, moose calf production, and the influence of
bears and climate on the Wyoming moose population.
SCIF also granted $50,000 to support the research
project.
In Asia:
SCIF has initiated an argali sheep survey in Tajikistan
that will take place this summer and fall. Approximately
$52,000 was transferred to our strategic conservation
partners last month to complete the research,
and Joe Hosmer, Conservation Committee Chairman
and Dr. Bill Moritz, Director of Conservation Programs
will be travelling to Tajikistan in August to oversee the
operation. Partners include the government of Tajikistan,
Dr. Raul Valdez of New Mexico State University,
and Dr. Andrey Subbotin of the Russian Research
Institute for Nature Conservation.
In Africa:
SCIF has committed $20,000 to support a national
lion population survey in Malawi. Combined with a
2009 survey in Mozambique and a 2010 survey in
Tanzania, this survey will show the number and distribution
of lions in large contiguous area of prominent
lion range. SCIF has again partnered with Philippe
Chardonnet of the International Foundation for the
Conservation of Wildlife, who will use the same
methods previously used for lion surveys in Tanzania
and Mozambique. Consistency in the research methods
will allow biologists to compare and combine the
results into one assessment of lion population in this
region of Africa.
SCIF also initiated and funded a leopard research
project in Namibia. Leopards are extremely difficult to
census and science-based information on this game
species is essential to validate its conservation management
strategy. An understanding of leopard population
trends is important to ensure harvest quotas are
sustainable. SCIF granted $45,000 to our partner, the
government of Namibia, to conduct a leopard population
survey
The SCI Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit charitable organization that
funds and manages worldwide programs dedicated to wildlife conservation,
outdoor education and humanitarian services, including such
programs as Sportsmen Against Hunger, Sensory Safari, Safari Care, Disabled
Hunter, the American Wilderness Leadership School, Becoming an
Outdoors Woman & More and Youth Education Seminars (YES) Outdoors.
