Rome, like its famous namesake, has 

a vibrant presence and a prominent 

history. Rome evolved from a fortified 

trading post at the head of the Mohawk 

River in the mid-1700s. Located on one 

of the most noted military and commercial 

routes on the continent, and was 

known as the Oneida Carrying Place or 

Deo-Wain-Sta to the tribal people of the 

Iroquois Six Nations. Rome’s historic Fort 

Stanwix, constructed in 1758 to protect 

the Carrying Place from French attack 

during the French and Indian War, also

hosted the Continental Army forces during 

the Revolutionary War. Besieged by 

British troops, it became known as “the 

fort that never surrendered.” The Battle of 

Oriskany was fought just six miles away 

in 1777, and was one of the war’s bloodiest 

and costliest engagements. 

The copper works Paul Revere founded 

in 1801 continues as the Revere Copper 

Company, with a manufacturing division 

in Rome. The Erie Canal broke ground 

here in 1817, and in 1892, Rome resident 

Francis Bellamy wrote America’s own 

Pledge of Allegiance. 

Today Rome is renowned as a city of 

famous sites, natural wonders, recreation

At the Corner of Beach and Canal. 

Since the 1800s people have been flocking 

to The Beach for the sand and the sun, the 

food and the fun, the water and the spectacular 

sunsets. The historic community of 

Sylvan Beach is nestled on the shores of 

Oneida Lake, the largest lake in New York 

State. Landmarks include Union Chapel, 

built in 1887, the 1896 Amusement Park, 

and the 1915 Lighthouse at Verona Beach. 

Visit the wonderful midway at Sylvan Beach 

Amusement Park, with everything from 

bumper cars and the Galaxi roller coaster 

to the Screamer, a speedboat thrill ride 

that you’ll never forget. Oneida Lake offers 

water sports and restaurants, picnics, sailing, 

fishing, nature hikes, or just relaxing 

in the sun. 

In the nearby town of Oneida, you can

The Silver City of Sherrill has its own place 

in history. Known as the Turkey Street Settlement 

in the mid-19th century, it was the 

home of the utopian Oneida Community 

until 1880 and the birthplace of the silverware 

giant Oneida Limited. Today you 

can tour the Oneida Community Mansion 

House, a National Historic Landmark. Enjoy

In the 19th century the Black River Canal, 

a 77-mile engineering marvel, was built to 

connect the Erie Canal with the Black River. 

And, during the Civil War, Trenton Falls was 

chosen by Governor Seward, Lincoln’s 

Secretary of State, to be the site for a vital 

meeting with international diplomats. The 

spectacular falls was meant to impress the 

group whose support was needed by the 

Union against the Confederates.

From the charm of the Hamilton College 

campus to the untamed splendor of its 

forests and streams, the Southern Hills of 

Oneida County is one of the loveliest areas 

in the state. Historic home to Oneida and 

Brothertown Indians, this scenic area is rich 

in history, agriculture, and natural beauty. 

In 1787, the picturesque village of Clinton 

was settled by pioneer families led by the 

dynamic Revolutionary War Captain Moses 

Foote. Five years later, Hamilton Oneida 

Academy was founded by the Reverend 

Samuel Kirkland, a school that evolved and 

was officially chartered in 1812 as Hamilton 

College. International giant Bristol Myers 

began in Clinton in 1887, and in 1912, 

American statesman and Clintonian Elihu 

Root was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. 

Another American icon, Kodak founder 

George Eastman, was born in the nearby 

village of Waterville in 1854, around the 

same time that the residents and merchants 

of the Southern Hills were being preyed 

upon by the Loomis Gang, notorious horse 

thieves and counterfeiters. 

Enjoy the garden and nature walks at 

historic Root Glen on the campus of 

Hamilton College. Retrace the footsteps 

of the ancient tribes. Discover the picturesque 

New England-style village of 

Clinton with its artisan shops, specialty
