A Jam-Packed Schedule
How one chapter celebrated USY Awareness Week
by Adam Schoenbart, METNY
Hadashot*
During the week
of November 8th, International
USY kicked off
USY Awareness Week,
and the New City Jewish
Center chapter of USY
(in the Koach division of
the METNY region) celebrated
the week as well,
with exciting programs almost
every night. All
week long we had a variety
of programs, each
aimed at attracting new
members and focusing on
different aspects of USY.
Awareness Week
kicked off on Sunday
night, November 9th,
when we interviewed
Clarkstown Supervisor
Charles Holbrook on Radio
USY, where he officially
declared the week
as USY Awareness Week
in the town. A great
show aired that night featuring
USYers from both
NCJC and Montebello
Jewish Center. (Radio
USY is a unique program
started last year by NCJC
USY and continues its sophomore season on a local
radio station - it’s on WRCR 1300 AM on Sunday
nights at 6:00, if you’re in Rockland County, NY.
On it USYers discuss the latest events in Israel and
the world, as well as a different topic relating to Judaism
every week. The show also plays music of Jewish
American and Israeli artists. Recently featured
night with Town of Clarkstown Supervisor Charles
Holbrook (above); Halftime Icebreakers at the Tailgate
Party on Monday night (below).
in the Jewish Week
magazine, Radio USY attracts
more and more listeners
every week.)
The week continued
on Monday with an NFL
Tailgate Party, with over
thirty USYers from three
different chapters attending.
All night long we
watched football on a big
screen projection TV, as
well as movies in our
lounge room. The night
was filled with football,
great kosher wings, TV,
friends, and fun.
Throughout the next
two days we held both a
SA/TO and Israel program.
Tuesday night the
NCJC chapter board sent
out almost 1,000 mailings
to our congregation in
hopes of raising tzedakah.
In our SA/TO mailing we
sent out raffle tickets to
win various sets of CD’s
by Jewish artists such as
Soulfarm, Sam Glaser,
Shlock Rock, and more.
On Wednesday we
followed the SA/TO program by showing the film
“Relentless”, a recent film focusing on the situation
in Israel and the Arab-Israeli conflict. We also talked
with METNY’s Regional Youth Director, Cynthia
Weinger, who spoke about Israel, Wheels, and other
USY summer programs.
