The Foley House/Hotel/Cottages
Sesquicentennial tour of Aitkin County landmarks
BY CONNIE PETTERSEN
2007 marks Aitkin County’s
150th anniversary since
being established in 1857.
Last October’s tour of Aitkin
County Seat historical landmarks
included the two
oldest churches in town, the
Depot Museum, courthouse,
old Carnegie Library, and
several residences of the
town’s founding fathers.
The Foley Hotel was built
in the early days of Aitkin
for Tom and Amanda Foley
who came to the area in the
1880’s. Their elegant hotel
was a high-class enterprise
complete with steam heat,
excellent dining room fare,
baths, and a bar.
The Foleys became prominent
citizens of the community
and active members of
St. James Catholic Church.
According to “A Story of
Faith 1881-1981” published
by Saint James Church,
Aitkin, MN: “Thomas R. Foley
was born in Winterport
Maine and came to Minneapolis
in 1876. Amanda
(Peterson) Foley came from
Sweden to the Cannon Falls
area at age six. They met
and were married in Minneapolis
in 1880, moving
to Aitkin in 1882. He was
involved in lumber, real
estate, prospecting, hotel,
general store, and was a
state representative. They
had a family of fi ve girls and
two boys.” The fi fth generation
of this family resides
in Aitkin now. Information
DWI Court for Crow Wing County endorsed by Board of Commissioners
BY KATHY BRYAN
The Crow Wing County
Board of Commissioners
met on Dec. 11 at 9 a.m.
at the Historic Courthouse.
Member present were Chairman,
Dewey Tautges, Rosemary
Franzen, Rachel Nystrom,
Paul Thiede and Doug
Houge. Also present were
County Administrator, David
Hamilton, County Attorney
Don Ryan, County Auditor,
Deborah Erickson and Administrative
Assistant, Terrie
Walseth.
The meeting was called to
order by Chairman Tautges
and the minutes from the
Nov. 27 regular County
Board Meeting were approved.
A brief discussion
ensued concerning the minutes
from the Committee of
the Whole meetings. Commissioner
Thiede stated he
was discomfi ted by the minutes
in their entirety. Commissioner
Nystrom agreed,
stating she would like the
written presentation to be a
representation of the offi cial
record consisting only of the
bare bones of the meeting.
The minutes from the Committee
of the Whole Meeting
of Nov. 20 were then approved,
as was the County
Board Meeting Agenda for
the Dec. 10 meeting.
Under the Open Con-
sent Calendar, the following
were approved by the
Board: Certifi cation of Trail
Completion for the Brainerd
Snodeos Snowmobile Club,
All-Terrain Vehicle Permit
for Pine Center Sportsman’s
Club, the 2008 Tobacco
License Renewals, and the
2007 Combination Liquor
License for Marty’s Saloon,
Inc.
Under Open Forum, County
Attorney Ryan stated he
has been working on the
Gilbert Lake access project.
Ryan stated the County’s
access isn’t on County land
and the County needs to
purchase land in order to
rectify the problem. The
funds to purchase will come
from Park Board funds.
Ryan will report on the
progress of the project at
the Dec. 27 Board meeting.
No action required.
Under Miscellaneous Business,
a resolution was before
the Board requesting
support for implementation
of a DWI Court in Crow
Wing County. Sheriff Todd
Dahl appeared and offered
his support and then introduced
employees from the
County Attorney’s Office
and a Judge. The representatives
stated the County has
applied for Federal funding
in this regard and that those
participating in the program
would be post-conviction
and mandated to attend
DWI Court. The project
also has the support of the
Chief Judge from the Ninth
District, the Chief Prosecutor
from Crow Wing County
and the County Attorney.
The intensive program shifts
from the usual practice of
just doing time, and statistics
have shown similar
DWI courts in the State are
working. Ultimately the
program saves money and
assists violators in becoming
good citizens. DWI Court
also encourages offenders
to rejoin society by helping
them with employment. The
project will cut down on jail
time, thereby cutting down
on overall expenses. Commissioner
Nystrom stated
she applauds the personnel
who were involved in implementation
of the project and
made a motion to adopt
the resolution in support
of the Crow Wing County
DWI Court. The motion
was seconded and carried
unanimously.
Under County Auditor,
Deborah Erickson appeared
with a resolution authorizing
the mileage reimbursement
rate for 2008 to follow
the IRS guidelines of
50.5 cents per mile. The
resolution was adopted by
the Board. Erickson also
presented a resolution designating
a list of banks and
savings and loan institutions
to serve as depositories for
Crow Wing County for 2008.
The resolution was adopted.
Erickson also presented a
list of payments to be made
for the second half of 2007
appropriations made by
the County in the amount
of $256,582, stipulating the
County Auditor be authorized
to issue warrants from
the General Fund. A motion
was made, seconded and
carried to adopt the resolution.
Erickson requested
budget adjustments in the
amount of $250,925 from
the General Fund Reserves
designated to the accounts
itemized. A motion was
made and seconded the
budget adjustments be authorized.
Motion carried.
The County Auditor also
presented a request from
Central Minnesota Community
Corrections for a
contingency payment of
$192,200 for the Central
Minnesota Juvenile Center
negative fund balance
through November 30. Request
was approved by
the Board. Erickson asked
the Board to adopt the
2008 Budget with a three
Vernon
holding
jewelry box
BY PHILIP NEESE
Vernon Sinell moved to
the home farm in southern
Aitkin County after serving
in WWII.
Vernon’s father Fred
served in the Army during
percent levy increase. The
Auditor recently returned
to County departments and
asked them to fi nd ways to
decrease expenses. Commissioner
Nystrom expressed a
concern about cuts in the
County health programs.
Erickson stated most cuts
were made in training and
travel expenses. Commissioner
Thiede thanked the
Auditor for her endeavors in
this regard. After a brief discussion,
the Board adopted
the resolution and set the
three percent levy budget
increase. The last item Erickson
presented to the Board
was an itemized list of bills
to approve. A motion was
made, second and carried
to approve the bills.
From the Offi ce of the
Purchasing Agreement several
requests for bids were
reviewed with the Board
for Security Services by the
Purchasing Manager. It was
the recommendation of the
County Sheriff and the Purchasing
Manager that the
Board of Commissioners
award a three year contract
to North Country Security.
The agreement may be terminated
by either party with
a sixty day written notice.
The Board endorsed the
contract award to North
Country Security, Inc. The
next item the Purchasing
Manager reviewed was the
results of bids for Medical
Examiner Transport Services.
A lengthy discussion
ensued consisting of several
area funeral home representatives
appearing before the
Board. It was Commissioner
Nystrom’s opinion that the
County should not endorse
one funeral home over the
other. Nystrom requested
the County Attorney gather
pertinent information concerning
the issue and report
back to the Board at their
meeting on December 27.
The last item presented by
the Purchasing Manager
dealt with a request to advertise
for sealed proposals
for a two year agreement
for a Nursing Service for
the County Jail Facility. A
motion was made, second
and carried to allow the
Purchasing Manager to advertise
for sealed proposals.
The motion carried.
The County Auditor reminded
the Board that a
Public Hearing was on the
agenda for 11 a.m. concerning
the 2008 Crow Wing
County Fee Schedule. Commissioner
Thiede noted that
there were no fi scal comparisons
before the Board.
Thomas and Amanda Foley,
early pioneers of the Aitkin
Community.
Thomas Foley donated land
west of town for the St. James
Catholic Church’s cemetery
dedicated July 28, 1890 (about
the time of the death of fellow
St. James’ parishioner Patrick
Casey’s 7-year-old son, Edward
Albert Casey, who drowned in
the Mud River in Aitkin.) The
Casey boy had been a playmate
of Tom and Amanda’s
son, Tom. The Casey boy’s
grave may have been the fi rst
one interred in St. Thomas
Cemetery, which was named
for Thomas Foley.
In 1905, local builder Nels
Holden built the Foley’s threestory
red brick home where
they raised their family. After
their oldest daughter married
and left Aitkin, Thomas offered
to build them a new house if
they’d return. Eventually more
Foley “cottages” were built
across the street from the brick
mansion.
Some of Tom and Amanda
Foley’s descendents still live in
the community. Their daughter
Barbara Foley married Ben
Hassman, a founder of the
First National Bank of Aitkin.
Hassman’s daughter Carol (Foley’s
granddaughter) recently
passed away at age 99. Carol
married Joe Ryan, a prominent
attorney and their sons (Foley
great-grandchildren) are Michael,
Dick and Jim Ryan of
Aitkin. Other Hassman daughters
in the area are Margaret
McConnell and Mary Schoepf.
The oldest Hassman daughter,
now deceased, was Charlotte
Welshons, who has decendents
in the community.
Tom and Amanda Foley
lived in their red brick home
until circa 1920 when they
passed away. It was the county
poor farm in the 20’s and
30’s. In 1940, the home became
an NYA or Govern-
ment Work House. In 1942
to 1948, the Foley house was
fi rst used as a funeral home
by O.S. Hartman, by Bob
Lenroot from 1949-1952, and
Bob Haas from 1952-1960.
(Across town was a competing
Ellis Seavey funeral parlor
in the former Sam Hodgedon
home, which is the present
Haberkorn Law Offi ce.) Ivan
Sorenson joined Seavey until
Seavey retired. When Bob
Haas went to work at the
courthouse, Ivan Sorenson and
Gordy Root purchased Haas’
business in the former Foley
house, and were later joined
by Jerry Thompson.
CLC Students energized by Soup Kitchen project
Central Lakes College students
said they relished the
opportunity to prepare and
serve a delicious meal at the
Brainerd soup kitchen.
The intercultural communication
students recently
undertook a class project
directed by instructor Kari
Frisch as an opportunity for
a new experience.
They purchased ingredients
for a spaghetti dinner,
including salad, dessert, and
beverages for at least 50
persons expected on any
given night at the Sharing
Bread facility. By the end
of the project, they agreed
that they had learned much
by working together and
getting feedback from the
people served.
“One thing I noticed while
I helped at the soup kitchen
was how grateful the people
were,” said Christian Ornelas,
Motley. “One man said
‘thank you’ at least five
times. Another neat thing
to see was how easily we
all got along and communicated.”
Intercultural communication,
a three-credit course,
is designed to explore, identify,
and understand obstacles
and opportunities that
influence communication
between cultures. Going
outside the classroom was a
bonus learning experience.
“Volunteering at the soup
kitchen was an eye opening
experience,” said Sam Mc-
Gerr, Brainerd. “It felt good
to help those who were
in need. It also made you
appreciate what you have
even more.”
‘Tis the season’ for Christmas
carols in public schools
BY JOSH MONTEZ
Every year, the ACLU and
its ilk infl uence public school
educators to trade in religious
Christmas carols for generic
holiday songs for kids to sing.
But it’s not necessary. Public
schools can teach religious
Christmas carols, and they
have the backing of the Supreme
Court.
Christmas hymns like Joy to
the World and Hark the Herald
Angels Sing, can be sung
in public school classrooms
across the country this Christmas
season. Is this a new accommodation?
Not at all, says
Doug Napier with the Alliance
Defense Fund.
“It’s ridiculous that Americans
have to think twice
about whether it’s OK to celebrate
Christmas in the public
schools.”
“I think we’ve reached this
point where our schools are
confused about what they can
do to celebrate Christmas. It
has come as a concerted effort
by these radical leftists groups
like the ACLU.”
This freedom was reinforced
by the Supreme Court more
than two decades ago in a case
called Lynch vs. Donnelly.
“The Supreme Court said,
‘The constitution affi rmatively
mandates accommodation,
not merely tolerance of all
She worked for the Aitkin schools for about 10 years,
was an active member of St. James Catholic Church
for over 50 years, and was active in 4-H for the years
her children participated in it.
She is survived by her daughters: Mary Massey,
Dallas, TX; Cyndi, Phoenix, AZ; sons: Michael, Bandera,
TX; Richard, Scandia; Steven, Galveston, TX; sisters:
Patricia, Detroit Lakes; Peggy, Fargo, ND; and brother,
James, Garland, TX.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sons:
Ronnie and Matt; and three grandchildren.
BLAYZE GOLDBERG
Blayze Michael Goldberg, a boy, weighing
7 lbs., 13 ozs., was born Nov. 28, 2007, at
Kanabec Hospital in Mora, to Sara Hammel
and Terrence Goldberg Jr., of Mora. Grandparents
religions, and forbids hostility
toward any.’ When you take
Christmas out of the public
school, you’re showing hostility
toward Christians.”
Knowing this should be a
relief to public school educators,
according to Eric Buehrer
with Gateways to Better
Education.
“Many teachers feel like they
are sneaking this in or smuggling
Bibles behind a closed
country. When in fact the
courts are saying ‘Hey, it’s fi ne.
We’re not against this. You can
go ahead and do it.’ So this is
a tremendous weight off of a
lot of educators’ minds.”
The sanctuary at historic Bethlehem Lutheran Church in
Christmas Tea at Bethlehem
BY CONNIE PETTERSEN
On Dec. 15, a nativity
tea was held in Bethlehem
- that is, the historic
110 year-old Bethlehem
Lutheran Church
in Aitkin County, not the
Middle East’s town in
Israel. Amidst a kaleidoscope
of various Christmas
cookies, homemade
breads and teas served
on holiday glass plates,
the eye could also behold
the colorful Christmas
quilts in the fellowship
area sewn by the
women of Bethlehem
Lutheran Church.
Nativity sets were everywhere.
Not only did
they deck the fellowship
halls, but window
ledges and as table centerpieces.
In the sanctuary,
nativities were
artfully arranged across
This set came from the Ben
Franklin in Aitkin.
two women of Bethlehem
Lutheran, Bev Midthun
They had plenty of help
arranging the displays
from Aitkin High School
art teacher Galen Doub,
who lent not only his
decorative talents, but at
least one of his nativity
sets as well.
Bev Midthun and Linda
Lueck began collecting
nativities many
years ago. Midthun has
some over 40 years old
from her travels abroad
with her husband Marv.
“I’d see a Nativity set
that I liked, and I’d buy
it,” said Midthun, who
hadn’t intended to start
a collection at fi rst. Then
it just kept building.
Linda Lueck and husband
Dale also spent
time overseas during his
military service years.
“For me, I couldn’t
decide at first which
Nativity set I wanted,”
said Linda Lueck, “so
for many years, I didn’t
she kept getting more
and more frustrated because
she didn’t have a
single nativity set. “Then
I fi nally found one that
I liked and bought it,
but the next time I went
shopping, I found another,
and before long,
it just grew.”
Lueck added that
some of her collection
is more traditional, others
are quite unique.
Then Lueck’s friends and
family added to the collections
over the years.
“My sister fi nds them at
said, who also made a
fabric book “Follow the
and a wreath from old
Christmas cards.
Both women have way
more nativity sets than
they can possibly use to
decorate their homes.
The idea to share with
others began to germinate
as a festive way to
get people not only in a
of the true meaning
Area lakes not safe, even with sub-zero temperatures
Weather conditions this
year have made ice very
unsafe on many area lakes.
Large amounts of snow over
a thin layer of ice, especially
on large lakes, means that
even with prolonged subzero
temperatures ice is
not safe for snowmobiles
and ATVs, according to the
Minnesota Department of
Natural Resources.
A check on Pokegama
Lake (Itasca County) this
past weekend showed 4
inches of snow, 2 inches of
crusty ice, 3 inches of water
and less than 2 inches of
ice. Sam Johnson with DNR
“I saw a snowmobile cross
but if the machine would
have stalled, I do not think
the ice would have supported
it,” said Johnson.
“Unfortunately, now there
are tracks and others may
believe the ice is safe.”
“We have received calls
“Other areas are reporting
unsafe ice, as well,” said Les
“The problems are widespread.
Each lake is different.
There are some smaller
lakes that froze before the
snowfall that may have
suffi cient ice, but the snow
has made for poor ice conditions
on most lakes. And,
the swamps are not frozen
either,” Ollila said.
Aitkin County Board highlights for December 11
BY CONNIE PETTERSEN
After a discussion with
Aitkin County Land Commissioner
Mark Jacobs, the Commissioners
approved a job
description, pay equity points
and hiring of a recreational
forester. Jacobs explained
that even with the current
timber situation in the state,
Aitkin County sold more
timber this year than last year.
“I think in the long run, this
position will more than pay
for itself,” said Jacobs.
Jacobs said that a recreation
forester will bring consistency
with about 80 percent
of the position already budgeted
for after a position was
transferred from their department
to the auditor’s offi ce.
“It’s not a new revenue draft,”
explained Jacobs, adding that
the forestry position will be
paid for by forfeited tax sales,
not levy dollars.
The Commissioners also approved
right of way plats #13
for CSAH 32 and #6 for CSAH
#10 presented by County
Engineer John Welle. They
approved Welle’s purchase of
a Caterpillar 312CL excavator
from the state bid for a total
cost of $81,143 before tax
and delivery, which is already
budgeted for in 2007.
Aitkin County Soil and
Water Conservation District
Manager Steve Hughes presented
information on a conservation
easement proposed
on property in Turner Township
owned by Murray and
Carol Mills (Bass Lake). The
Mills said an easement would
keep their sensitive lake
from being subdivided in the
future. An easement would
protect wildlife habitat, water
quality and the lake’s natural
beauty. An easement will not
reduce property value or take
it out of private ownership.
It won’t take it off the tax
roles or limit hunting, fi shing,
trapping, and forest management.
Funding is available
from the Board of Water and
Soil Resources and Big Sandy
Watershed.
Other business:
• The Board renewed a
contract for 2008 septic system
inspections with Joe
Fuhrer.
• Sheriff Scott Turner was
given approval by the Commissioners
to accept low bid
The gentle laughing owl
BY WARREN NELSON
Nearly every winter I get
a call or two from someone
who has an owl sitting on
top of one of their bird feeders.
They usually want to
know if the owl is a threat to
the birds coming in. The dialogue
goes something like
this: “No. This time of year,
owls will come into yards at
night and hunt around your
bird feeders because seed
will fall on the ground and
that will attract mice and the
owls are just hunting the
mice. They are doing you a
big favor. And sometimes
they will just hang around
into daylight. What is the
owl doing right now?” “Well,
it seems to be just sleeping.
But occasionally it will look
down.” “It’s probably listening
for mice under the snow.
What are your other birds
doing right now?” “They
seem to be getting seed out
of the feeder right below it.”
Needless to say, it’s not bothering
the other birds. After
a few more questions about
the size and color of the owl,
it is usually determined that
it is a Barred Owl. That is
the most common owl to be
found near feeders in our
area in the winter, however,
smaller owls can also show
up – like the Saw-whet Owl
or Screech Owl.
One of the most common
of the owls in our area, the
Barred Owl is an owl of
the deep woods. There are
ten species of owls found
in Minnesota on a regular
basis, with two others seen
on occasions. The Barred
Owl is the only owl found
in Minnesota that has dark
eyes (actually dark brown).
All other species have yellow
eyes. This is the quickest way
to determine it as a Barred
Owl. It is grayish brown
in color and at eighteen to
twenty-four inches long it is
considered a medium sized
owl. It has a puffy rounded
head with no ear tufts. They
get the name “Barred Owl”
from the markings on the
breast and belly – cross
barring on the breast and
lengthwise barring on its
belly. Its back appears kind
of spotted in white.
They are sometimes referred
to as a nine-hooter.
Their normal call is a hoohoo-hoo-hoo,hoo-hoo-hoohoo-ah.
Bird books describe
the call as “Who cook’s for
you? Who cook’s for you all?”
It is a beautiful and eerie call
usually made after dark, but
it may occasionally call during
the day too. During the
spring courtship period, it
is known to make all kinds
of strange calls. That is
why the early settlers often
from Martin Communications,
Inc. of Brainerd for
$31,098 over Radio Systems
$32,125 for the Jacobson Radio
Repeater project.
• The Board had a discussion/debriefi
ng on the AMC
(Association of Minnesota
Counties) conference they
attended in the Twin Cities.
• The Commissioners went
to Long Lake Conservation
Center for lunch and an open
house/ribbon cutting event
for the newly remodeled
Marcum House.
Committee Updates:
• Regional Radio Interoperable
Advisory Committee
- Scott Turner will be a delegate
from Aitkin County.
• Aitkin County Historical
Soc. – They are moving
forward with land purchase
of their present site and making
a grant application to
MN State Historical Society
to qualify for a possible 50
percent matching grant. The
application has to be in by
Jan 11.
• RC&D Council – the committee
met in Carlton County
and toured a company’s
high tech root cellar that is
referred to it as the “laughing
owl”.
Here in Minnesota, Barred
Owls nest in the eastern twothirds
of the state, primarily
because this is where the
heavier woods are located.
Nesting is mostly in hollow
trees beginning in early
May. There are usually two
or three white eggs (cavity
nesting birds nearly always
have plain white eggs since
they don’t need to be a
camouflage color). They
hatch out in about a month
and fl edge in about another
month and a half with the
parents watching over them
for a couple of months. Besides
mice, they also feed on
chipmunks, squirrels, small
rabbits, frogs, snakes, insects
and rarely a bird (most birds
are just too fast to be dependable
food sources).
With the heavier snow falls
this winter, it is possible that
more people will be lucky
enough to have owls show
up around their feeders.
They are the perfect mouse
trap. Sit back and enjoy one
of the wonders of nature.
On Dec. 11th, Long Lake Conservation Center held their open house and ribbon cutting
ceremony for their newly remodeled Marcum House. Pictured L-R front row: Commissioners
raise for employees was approved,
which was already
budgeted for 2008. They
continue working with the
previous computer software
company regarding compensation
why their previous software
capital investment plan; they
Lightning strikes again
BY STEVE COOK
The Northern Lakes Lightning
hosted the Mora/Hinckley
Finlayson Mustangs at
the Hallett Community Center
in Crosby on Dec. 14.
Varsity
The Mustangs came galloping
in with their 4 win
0 loss record. The Mustangs
took charge of the
game early and kept up a
relentless pace, keeping
the uninspired Lightning at
bay. Trey Flesch in goal for
the Lightning was up to the
task, attempting to recharge
his teammates, stopped the
barrage of Mustang shots.
After one period the score
still remained knotted at
0, but the Mustangs had
outshot the Lightning 14
to 5. The Lightning looked
like a completely different
team in the second period.
2:50 into the period, Eddie
DeCent from Ben Kepner,
scored the games fi rst goal,
and gave the Lightning the
lead. 6:07 into the period,
Dylan Graves tied the game
up, with Ryan Signore assisting.
With the period winding
down, Eddie DeCent passed
the puck to the point, where
Kepner hit a huge slap shot,
which Brandon Sterling
tipped in off the end of his
stick, to put the Lightning
back on top, 2 to 1. 8:18 into
the fi nal period, Willie Hollinbeck
scored to give the
Lightning a 2 goal margin,
with his brother, Charlie
Hollinbeck assisting. The
Lightning would go on to
win their 4th straight game,
and improve their season
record to 5 wins and 1 loss.
Both teams ended up having
30 shots on goal.
The Mustangs scored the
only goal of the fi rst period,
with 2 seconds left, to lead
into the second period the
Lightning’s Jordan Severance
scored to tie the game
up. Assisting on Severance’s
goal was Denver Monn, and
Jace Goodmanson. With
only 34 seconds left in the
period, the Mustangs scored
their second goal of the
How geothermal energy works
Heat from the earth can be
used as an energy source in
many ways, from large and
complex power stations to
small and relatively simple
pumping systems. This heat
energy, known as geothermal
energy, can be found
almost anywhere—as far
away as remote deep wells
in Indonesia and as close
as the dirt in our backyards.
Tapping geothermal energy
is an affordable and sustainable
solution to reducing our
dependence on fossil fuels,
and the global warming and
public health risks that result
from their use.
In the Western United
States and in other places
around the world, geothermal
energy produces electricity
in large power plants.
Today, geothermal energy
provides about fi ve percent
of California’s electricity, and
25 percent of El Salvador’s.
In Idaho and Iceland, geothermal
heat is used to warm
buildings and for other applications.
In thousands of
homes and buildings across
the United States, geother-
Fuels used to generate electricity are
getting more expensive.
That’s driving prices up.
Your electric cooperative is working hard
to make a difference.
And you can do your part, too.
mal heat pumps use the
steady temperatures just
underground to heat and
cool buildings, cleanly and
inexpensively.
Under the earth’s crust,
there is a layer of hot and
molten rock called magma.
Heat is continually produced
there, mostly from the decay
of naturally radioactive materials
such as uranium and
potassium. The amount of
heat within 33,000 feet of
the earth’s surface contains
50,000 times more energy
than all the oil and natural
gas resources in the world.
This map shows geothermal
potential in the United
States.
The areas with the highest
underground temperatures
are in regions with active
or geologically young volcanoes.
These “hot spots”
occur at plate boundaries or
at places where the crust is
thin enough to let the heat
through. The Pacific Rim,
often called the Ring of Fire
for its many volcanoes, has
many hot spots, including
some in Alaska, California,
You have the power to make the difference.
Change your light bulbs to make
your home more energy efficient.
Compact fluorescents are 75 percent
more energy efficient than
conventional light bulbs.
Contact Mille Lacs Energy for more information.
927-2191 or 800-450-2191 www.mlecmn.net
and Oregon. Nevada has
hundreds of hot spots, covering
much of the northern
part of the state.
These regions are also seismically
active. Earthquakes
and magma movement break
up the rock covering, allowing
water to circulate.
As the water rises to the
surface, natural hot springs
and geysers occur, such as
Old Faithful at Yellowstone
National Park. The water in
these systems can be more
than 200°C (430°F).
The most common current
way of capturing the energy
from geothermal sources is
to tap into naturally occurring
“hydrothermal convection”
systems where cooler
water seeps into the earth’s
crust, is heated up, and then
rises to the surface. When
heated water is forced to
the surface, it is a relatively
simple matter to capture that
steam and use it to drive
electric generators. Geothermal
power plants drill their
own holes into the rock to
more effectively capture the
steam.
Geothermal springs can
also be used directly for
heating purposes. Hot spring
water is used to heat greenhouses,
to dry out fi sh and
de-ice roads, for improving
oil recovery, and to heat fi sh
farms and spas. Geothermal
water has been used to heat
homes and buildings for
more than a century.
In Iceland, virtually every
building in the country is
heated with hot spring water.
In fact, Iceland gets more
than 50 percent of its energy
from geothermal sources.
Geothermal heat occurs
everywhere under the surface
of the earth, but the
Energy Efficient
Stoves
conditions that make water
circulate to the surface are
found only in less than 10
percent of the earth’s land
area. An approach to capturing
the heat in dry areas
is known as “hot dry rock.”
The rocks are fi rst broken up
by pumping high-pressure
water through them. Water
is then pumped from the
surface down through the
broken hot rocks. After the
water heats up, it is brought
back to the surface through
a second well and used to
drive turbines for electricity
or to provide heat.
A much more conventional
way to tap geothermal energy
is by using geothermal
heat pumps to provide heat
and cooling to buildings.
Also called ground-source
heat pumps, they take advantage
of the constant yearround
temperature of about
50°F that is just 5 to 10
feet underground. Either
air or an antifreeze liquid is
pumped through pipes that
are buried underground,
and recirculated into the
building. In the summer, the
liquid moves heat from the
building into the ground. In
Located at Aitkin Rental • 218-927-6907
1068 Air Park Drive, Aitkin, MN 56431
the winter, it does the opposite,
providing pre-warmed
air and water to the heating
system of the building.
In the simplest use of
ground-source heating and
cooling, a tube runs from
the outside air, under the
ground, and into a house’s
ventilation system. More
complicated, but more effective
systems use compressors
and pumps—as in electric
air conditioning systems—to
maximize the heat transfer.
In regions with temperature
extremes, such as the
northern United States in
the winter and the southern
United States in the summer,
ground-source heat pumps
are the most energy-effi cient
and environmentally clean
heating and cooling system
available.
Ground-source heat pumps
are catching on in some
areas though. In rural areas
without access to natural gas
pipelines, homes must use
propane or electricity for
heating and cooling. Heat
pumps are much less expensive
to operate, and since
buildings are widely spread
out, installing underground
loops is not an issue. Under-
ground loops can be easily
installed during construction
of new buildings as well,
resulting in savings for the
life of the building.
Geothermal energy has the
potential to play a signifi cant
role in moving the United
States (and other regions of
the world) toward a cleaner,
more sustainable energy system.
It is one of the few renewable
energy technologies
that—like fossil fuels—can
supply continuous, base load
power. The costs for electricity
from geothermal facilities
are also declining.
Over the next decade,
new geothermal projects
are expected to increase.
As hot dry rock technologies
improve and become
competitive, even more of
the largely untapped geothermal
resource could be
developed. In addition to
electric power generation,
which is focused primarily
in the western United States,
there is a bright future for
the direct use of geothermal
resources as a heating source
for homes and businesses
everywhere.
Why Jesus is better
than Santa Claus
By Rev. James Spellman of Ohio
Santa lives in the North Pole . . .
Jesus lives everywhere.
Santa rides in a sleigh . . .
Jesus rides on the wind and walks on water.
Santa comes but once a year . . .
Jesus is an ever-present help.
Santa fi lls your stockings with goodies . . .
Jesus supplies all your needs.
Santa comes down your chimney uninvited . . .
Jesus stands at your door and knocks,
Then enters your heart when invited.
You’ll have to wait in line to see Santa . . .
Jesus is as close as the mention of His name.
Santa lets you sit on his lap . . .
Jesus lets you rest in His arms.
Santa doesn’t know your name,
He says, “Hi little boy or girl, what’s your name?” . . .
Jesus knew your name before you did.
Not only does He know our names,
He knows our address too, and our history and future
And He knows how many hairs are on your head.
Santa has a belly like a bowl full of jelly . . .
Jesus has a heart full of love.
All Santa can offer is HO, HO, HO . . .
Jesus offers help, health and hope.
Santa says, “You better not cry,” . . .
Jesus says, “Cast all your cares on Me for I care for you.”
Jesus makes new life, mends wounded hearts,
repairs broken homes and builds mansions.
Santa may make you chuckle, but . . .
Jesus gives you joy that is your strength.
While Santa puts gifts under your tree . . .
Jesus became our gift and died on a tree.
It’s obvious there is really no comparison.
We need to remember who Christmas is all about.
We need to put Christ back in Christmas,
Jesus is the Reason for the Season.
Merry Christmas!
Be a responsible entertainer
It’s the season for hosting
holiday parties filled with
family, friends, food and fun.
So whether you’re hosting an
intimate dinner party for family
or a gathering for clients
and colleagues, ensure it’s a
fun, safe event by encouraging
your guests to designate
a driver before toasting the
season. To help promote
responsible holiday revelry
among adults, here are some
simple tips to keep in mind.
1. When serving alcohol
beverages, serve food.
2. Offer non-alcohol beverages.
Have something for
everyone: soft drinks, coffee
and other non-alcohol beverages,
such as O’Doul’s, 180
or Monster.
3. Serve each guest one
drink at a time. Spacing
drinks throughout a party can
help your guests stay within
their personal limits. Never
force drinks on anyone. If
serving wine, do not keep
refreshing unfi nished glasses
as this makes it diffi cult for
guests to keep track of how
much they’re drinking.
4. Serve “measured” drinks.
Beer and fl avored malt beverages
contain 4.2 to 6 percent
alcohol by volume and come
in standard-size packages,
so it’s easy to keep track of
CROSBY SUPERVALU
Judy Barrows, Ironton
Betty Brager, Crosby
Gladys VanVickle, Crosby
Beatrice Bridge, Aitkin
how much you are drinking.
Hard liquor drinks can
have dramatically different
amounts of alcohol, as well
as calories and carbohydrates.
Many factors contribute to
these wide variances: brands
of liquor used, alcohol by
volume in brands chosen,
drink recipe, mixers and
bartender’s pouring preferences.
If you choose to serve
hard liquor, use a shot glass
or jigger to avoid making
drinks too strong.
5. Consider how different
types of alcohol are consumed.
The amount of time
during which an alcohol
beverage is consumed greatly
impacts how alcohol is absorbed
into the body. Beer
is widely recognized as a
beverage of moderation and
versatility. It is consumed
throughout a meal, a sporting
event, at a bar or party with
friends, or simply while relaxing
at home. Even though a
12-ounce beer may contain
the same amount of alcohol
as a 1 1/2-ounce shot of
80-proof liquor, a beer is enjoyed
leisurely, while a shot
is usually consumed in one
swallow.
6. Stop serving alcohol at
least one hour before the
party ends. Serve desserts and
other foods, coffee and soft
drinks. But remember: none
of these eliminate alcohol
from the body — only the
passage of time will do that.
7. Help your friends get
home safely. As a real friend,
encourage your guests to
designate a driver when they
arrive. And don’t ever hesitate
to call a cab or ask someone
to spend the night if they may
have had too much to drink.
The good news is that designating
a driver has become
second nature to most adults.
According to a recent survey
conducted by Nielsen
Media Research, 154 million
American adults have been or
have used a designated driver
— that’s roughly half the U.S.
population.
