Conversation
Statement: Having served as a Director for two years, and then as Treasurer and
Secretary these past two years, I would like to continue my involvement and
contribution to the Board by serving you in the role of Vice President for 2012. I have
found that serving on the Board of Directors is an immensely satisfying and valuable
experience. I believe that we are increasing the presence and influence of the AIACV in
the region, and I look forward to helping us continue in that process.
To that end, I have been serving on the Public Policy Committee, meeting monthly with
the City of Sacramento to help improve their process and customer service with the
private sector. I have also been working with Region Builders, and on the PAC of the
Sacramento Builders Exchange, to collaborate on efforts to advance the influence of the
design and construction industries on jurisdictions within the region.
Having served as Chief Building Official of both the City and County of Sacramento, and
currently with the City of Stockton, plus a combined 35+ years of private practice, I feel I
bring tremendous depth of experience to the Chapter’s Board.
As a LEED Accredited Professional and Certified Green Building Professional, I place a
particular emphasis on green building and sustainability in my role as an architect, and
will continue to promote sustainability as a high priority on our Board of Directors.
Statement: I would be honored to continue serving the AIA Central Valley Chapter as
Secretary. The continuation of our efforts to make our Chapter a visual and vital part of
the fabric of our region is very important to the future of our organization. To be
effective, these efforts must include collaboration with government agencies and
related trade organizations, development of our emerging professionals, promotion of
the practice of architecture as a necessary component of the built environment and
educating the public about the benefits of design excellence.
I feel that architects, especially AIA architects, have a responsibility to our profession to
act as creative problem solvers. Developing programs and opportunities for our
members to provide solutions and resources to our community should be a priority for
our Chapter. In this way we can prove our value and promote our member firms as the
first choice for regional projects. I look forward to helping in this regard and pledge to
support our members in any way that I can.
Name: Michael Parrott, AIA
Firm: Nacht & Lewis Architects
Board Position: Treasurer
Education: California Poly, San Luis Obispo
Involvement: AIACV BOD (2010-2011), AAH
(2004–present), COTE (2000 & 2001)
& BEEP (1997)
Statement: I am interested in serving the design community as treasurer with the AIA
Central Valley Board of Directors to help improve our understanding of the built
environment. By serving as a current Director for the Central Valley Chapter, I found the
dialogue between architects, engineers, contractors and the community can have a
positive impact on the built environment. Being the Treasurer provides an excellent
opportunity to broaden the potential impact of such collaboration. If elected, I would
bring an enduring commitment, organizational skills and an aspiration to engage the
entire community to the Board of Directors.
Name: Pat Derickson, AIA
Firm: President, Stafford King Wiese Architects
Board Position: Director
Education: B.Arch University of Oregon
Involvement: AIACV Board, CSI-Past President Sacramento
Chapter, CSHE, ASHE, SacMetro Chamber – Healthcare and
Biosciences task force, Region Builders Council Member
Member Since: 1998
Statement: The AIA is the voice of the architectural profession. As the profession
continues to struggle within the worst economy in 80 years with pressure to change the
way we practice accelerating, we need the AIACV to be a strong advocate and resource
for us. We have many common interests: architectural design, sustainable design,
integrated project delivery, LEAN principles, and building information modeling. To be
effective, the AIA must be relevant to its members, but the bigger challenge may be for
us to remain relevant to our communities. This is an important dialogue to have and I
am very pleased to have the opportunity to be part of it.
Statement: It is no question that the architectural industry is evolving rapidly with the
advent of more complex technologies, the use of social media and the current economy.
As a young architect and aspiring leader in the marketplace I find myself both captivated
and challenged by the changing ways in which we deliver architecture and the manner
in which we secure business now and in the future. It is my personal goal to ensure that
our businesses remain strong by advocating for more education of our clientele, delving
further into the programs and methods that deliver our work, and striving to stay
relevant in the recruitment of architecture’s next-generation leaders.
Name: Chris Brown, Assoc. AIA
Statement: Design may be a passion, but volunteering my time is also something I enjoy
doing. This past year I sat on the AIACV Design Awards Committee getting to know the
Design Community. I co-chaired the 4 th Wednesday Design Dialogue series this past
year with ASLA, continuing the interaction between the community and the profession.
I look forward to strengthening the connection between our design profession and the
community through the 4WDD series and growing this important program. I am also
excited to get to know our emerging professionals and continuing our support of helping
individuals like me get registered.
Name: Matthew Lechowick, Associate AIA
Firm: Stantec Architecture, Adjunct Professor Cosumnes River College
Board Position: Associate Director
Education: Bachelor’s in Architectural History & Application from
UC Davis, Masters of Architecture Illinois Institute of Technology
Member Since: 2008
Statement: As Associate Director for the Central Valley chapter, I intend to
carry on the excellent job of my predecessors by connecting more with
the community, and specifically working with Funkaar Studios (the Chapter’s ARE course
provider) to get aspiring architects through the ARE exams in a shorter period of time.
My goal is not to reinvent the wheel as Associate Director, but to continue to
put positive programs in place and make improvements where possible. I
have had the opportunity to observe my wife's legal career, and make note of the
elements we can emulate in architecture to assist more architects in earning their
licenses and building successful careers. This includes but is not limited to: notifying
architecture students from the Central Valley about beginning the IDP process in school;
tracking architecture graduates to sign up and take the Funkaar classes; and creating
and promoting study groups for the State license exams. Licensing is at a 20 year
low. And while this is for a myriad of reasons, there is much I believe can do as an
Associate Director to help improve that number.
