It’s 2:50 on a Monday
afternoon and nonsense is
being yelled from every
which way as actors shuffle
to the stage for vocal warm
ups. A single voice booms,
“selfish shellfish”, and the
statement is quickly answered
by several other voices, all
strong in projecting the line,
“selfish shellfish.” The crew
is assembling in the front
rows of the auditorium and
preparing to make their way
to whatever room will hold
their project for the day and
Blanchard and Rodriguez
are scooting down the rows
of seats in the back of the
auditorium in search of a
comfortable spot that will
be theirs for the next two or
three hours. As the actors line
up down stage to recite the
line that best describes their
character(s), everyone begins
to sink into the working
mentality for the day, or, most
do.
“Everyday something
happens that I will never
forget,” says junior, Emily
Morris.
It’s agreed that the chemistry
that everyone shares with
one another is what keeps
us coming back, though the
chance of being reprimanded
by the all powerful Blanchard
is also something that we all
equally dread, along with
the understanding that we
will all inevitably graduate,
therefore, leaving behind what
most call, a second family.
(Zombies also fall under that
list of fears).
“I’ve never been able to see
myself being an actress, but
going to convention and all
the workshops, I was able to
imagine going to Broadway
and just throwing myself
into it, even if I do totally
embarrass myself,” said Erin
Valentine, freshman.
Though the hours seem to
be dragging by as rehearsal
progresses, there’s an
atmosphere that hangs over
most rehearsals that makes it
all bearable.
“The thing I love most
about Drama is being with
creative people in a creative
atmosphere,” said Marcus
Bush, Senior.
It seems that no matter the
day, month, year, season,
there is a freshness which
everyone outputs into a large
pot that unavoidably brews
the successfulness of the final
product of the play.
And as the final lines are
being read, the final stitches
being sewn, they hear it.
“Down Stage!”
Those two words resound
through the auditorium,
being hurled into the girls’
dressing room, boys’ dressing
room, back stage left and
right, black box and office;
peeling away the frustration
of a hard day’s work, picking
at the anxiety of a potential
“talking to”. Those words are
a whisper of relief and equally
a warning cry. But no matter
the circumstances, crew and
actors commence and form
a line across the edge of the
stage in anticipation of the
last words of the day.
The faces of the actors
and crew expose the
understanding that no matter
what will happen in their
world that was created long
ago; they will be alright
because they have each other
as well as the potential to
always better themselves
individually as well as a
group.
Have a Good College Application
Samantha King
Reporter
How to
Scholarships are
an “important thing” when
students talk about college.
Not too many families can
afford to spend the thousands
of dollars on extended
educational purposes and not
have it hurt their pockets.
It’s never too early
to apply for scholarships.
Though, it’s defiantly not
a fun process. There are
mounds of paperwork to fill
out, you have to know yours
and your parent’s financial
status, and then there are
the deadly essays that some
foundations ask you to write.
However, if you’re well
organized, prepared, and
know how to keep your sanity
then you’ll be all set!
The first step in the
process doesn’t even come
close to the paperwork. It’s
getting to know the people
that you already know.
This may sound redundant
but studies have shown if
you know your counselors,
principals, and teachers better,
say on a first name bases
then they will remember
you for more scholarship
opportunities. This helps
in more then one category.
By knowing the people in
your school and community
you can apply for local
scholarships and have more of
a pull. Going against friends
is a nasty business so you
want all the ammunition that
you can get. So, when you
need references for letters of
recommendations you’ll know
who to call.
You have this dream
college that you’ve wanted
to go to for your entire life.
What are you going to do if
they send you a letter that
starts out like this:
“We are sorry to inform you
that your application has
been denied. However…”
We have found an answer to
the problem-apply for lots
of schools; you have a better
chance for more scholarships
and if the school of your
choice says “We are sorry…”
then you don’t have to freak
out that much because you
have a back up plan.
Keeping options open
looks good too. Don’t rule
out anything just because you
don’t think you will like it.
No matter how low the cost of
the scholarship-it might help.
(NOTE: Applying for lower
cost scholarships has less
competition.)
Scholarship trusties
look for community service
that doesn’t resolve around
you.
Older generations think that
this generation is the “Megeneration.”
The services
don’t have to be all year
around, though that will help
in the long run, it just has to
be a substantial amount at
an accredited location. The
location has to be able to
vouch for the time and effort
put into the services. If you’re
having trouble finding places
in and/or around your town
you can use www.google.
com to help with the search.
Contacting the counselors,
principles and teachers can
be a good asset. Who knows
there might be a way for
your school to host a service
that you can put on your
applications.
Next, would be
the writing portion. Many
scholarships ask for a essay(s)
to get to know what you are
all about. This can be tricky
because they want the paper
to be unique in a world that
tells everyone to conform.
They grade extremely hard
so don’t start with a cliché
because the paper will go
straight to the “NO” pile.
Experts, former graders, and
other scholarship winners
have said “if you write
about something you have
experience with and can relate
to the reader, it’s a good idea
to go with that. It’ll help you
earn another round to the ‘big’
money.”
Start with a rough
draft, and read over the essay
a couple times. If the first
couple of paragraphs are weak
and not straight to the pointthen
get rid of them- pronto!
Your essay should be clear,
cut and to the point. Don’t
doll-loll around making long
intricate sentences with bigover
used- words. It should
sound intelligent but still be
able to relate with the reader.
Before sending the final copy,
have someone, either parents,
teachers, friends, ect. read
over it and give their opinion.
If they have suggestions take
them into consideration and
revise, fresh eyes can save
the essay a lot of trouble.
However, keep it the paper,
based around what was
written first. Don’t change
everything because someone
says that something looks
weird about it. When your
completely satisfied send it in.
Be patient! While
waiting for the results of
one scholarship there are 50
million others that haven’t
reached their deadlines!
It’s finally here. Time to break out the candy hearts,
the roses, the chocolate, and the super sweet Valentines
Day cards. Love is soon to be in the air. Guys get ready
to treat your girls, take them someplace nice instead of
just to the McDonalds down the street. Show some love.
Ladies be prepared to be pampered, while also showing
appreciation to your man. It’s your day to shine. But what
exactly does this special day say to those who are single
Does the word miserable come to mind, watching all the
lovey-dovey action going on all around you Or are you
the one that looks past things because you could care less
regardless Well for those fellow classmates out there
struggling with the idea of being SINGLE don’t stress too
much. It’s February, a romantic time of the year, a time
where cupid steps up to the plate and smacks love right out
of the park. Still clueless though as to what to do February
14 You’re in luck. For starters you could get a group of
friends together and throw a huge blow out party. You’ll
be so busy socializing that you won’t need to think of that
special someone. Another idea… if there’s no significant
other to pamper, why not pamper yourself Go out and buy
something that would make you happy and spend that time
with it. In case you didn’t know it, there are people far
worse off than you are. You could go to a retirement home
and hang with those who have lost their partners or don’t
have any at all. There’s no need to sulk when this dreaded
day comes around. Keep a positive attitude you’re bound
to find someone that fits you perfectly. After all there are
six billion people on earth!.
I hadn’t had time to eat breakfast this
morning. As my stomach grumbled
loudly, I grimaced, but was saved from
the wide-eyed stares when the bell
rang. Finally. I leapt from my desk
and darted out of the room before
anyone else had even reached for their
bags, racing the other starved teens
for the beginning of the never-ending
lunch line. I made my way forth,
hardly noticing what they were serving
as my stomach gurgled, and I winced.
It was starting to become painful. With
tray in hand and friends at my side, I
walked to my table, only then taking
in what I had bought with my last two
dollars. The pizza that rested upon my
Styrofoam tray had an air of certain
misgivings, but I ignored the feeling
as I picked my lunch up. Or tried to.
The pizza was raw; its crust limp and
soft to the touch, it flopped forward
in a way that had a grievous effect
on my appetite. I shared a look with
my companions, all gawking warily at
the specimen before us, and hesitantly
I took a bite. Ever aware of the fact
the cheese was stiff and wanted to come
off all at once, I was distracted by the
gooey, pasty taste. Dough. Making a
face that resembled my famous lemonpucker,
I launched myself for a napkin
and spat it out, it’s sickly, chewy factor
doing nothing for my taste buds. In
growing horror, I goggled at the pizza
lying discarded before me, tilting my
head slightly to get a better look at the
uncooked stringy line of pale yellow
seeping slowly from the pizza. My
ravenous state evaporated with the very
sight, and inwardly I swore: Never
again.
Daycare’s Dilemma is Destressing
Danica Womack
Reporter
To have a baby
shifting inside of a person is
an experience I have yet to
comprehend fully, but from
the glow of those I see walking
about the corridors with me, I
imagine it must be astounding.
And incredibly unfair. Every 48
minutes a teen has an abortion.
And yet, derogatory comments
are common against pregnant
teens, despite the courage it
took to face the responsibility
of a child. According to
New York Times, the rate of
adolescences that drop out from
school because of their newest
occupation as parents is eighty
percent, and the nine percent
that stands for other students
pales in comparison. It doesn’t
have to be this way. To be able
to bring a child to a trusted
school daycare facility would
be a relief for young parents
everywhere, would it not
Sources
from
womenshealthchannel.com
tell of one million students
becoming pregnant each year
in America. That means close
to 2800 teens get pregnant
each day. One-third of women
in the U.S. become pregnant
during their teens, and yet it is
incredibly rare for a high school
to offer a daycare facility to
keep their pupils in school.
Texas Department of
State Health Services states:
Every 10 minutes, a teen
in Texas gets pregnant.
Every 10 hours, a 14-yearold
teen gets pregnant.
Every 3 hours, a 15-yearold
teen get pregnant.
Every 1.5 hours, a 16-yearold
teen gets pregnant.
Every 52 minutes, a 17-
year-old teen gets pregnant.
Every 35 minutes, a 18-
year-old teen gets pregnant.
Every 28 minutes, a 19-
year-old teen gets pregnant.
Every 10 minutes
a teen gives birth.
I think its time high schools
everywhere catch up with
reality. Teens need help.
Support us, give us a hand. Give
us a chance. Give us a daycare.
Crosby High School
follows State and Federal
rules, one of them being to
provide the students with a
healthy lunch. Because of
this, anything the cafeteria
makes is baked. An increased
rate fruit and veggies are
available thanks to funds from
Agricultural departments.
Adriana Villarreal, a
spokeswoman for the Houston
Independent School District,
states “HISD school cafeterias
will also begin serving
healthier versions of foods
this year, such as pizza, tacos
and spaghetti…” and I can’t
help but wonder where she got
the maddening idea that pizza
was healthy. Nevertheless,
an uncooked pizza is just
as bad as a fried one, and
can lead to health problems,
too. Food poisoning is not
something to be taken lightly,
or to be considered an unlikely
chance.
For the second time in
less then four months, a school
in Trenton, New Jersey was
struck with food poisoning.
They had to send twenty-two
kids with nausea, vomiting,
and cramps due to a sandwich
called ‘Steak-Ums’ that had
under-cooked slices of beef
residing between layers of
bread. Before that it had been
innocent fruit cups, long
expired, which school officials
noticed but did not warn the
cafeteria workers of.
Fruits are divine; dough draws
the line.

Super Bowl
XXXXIII
On Sunday February 1 st 2009
the Super Bowl went down at
Raymond James Stadium in
Tampa Bay Florida. The game
was between the Arizona
Cardinals from the NFC and
the Pittsburg Steelers from
the AFC. The Cardinals were
led into the Super Bowl by
veteran Quarterback Kurt
Warner and Wide Receivers
Larry “Fitz” Fitzgerald
and Anquan Boldin. The
Cardinals were riding one
heck of a wave considering
they were blown out of the
water in their previous game
against the New England
Patriots 47-7 coming into
the playoffs. Coach Ken
Whisenhunt said after the win
against the Atlanta Falcons
in the NFC Wild Card Game
that “Something changed
on the way back home after
the New England game and
that we hope we can keep it
going.” The success continued
when the Cardinals traveled
to Carolina to take on the
Panthers. The Cardinals
defense made Carolina
Quarterback Jake Delhomee
commit 5 interceptions and
fumble the ball away once.
The Cardinals won the game
33-13 and Wide Receiver
Larry Fitzgerald keep his
TD receptions coming. The
Cardinals advanced past
the NFC Divisional round
and faced the unlikely
Philadelphia Eagles in the
NFC Championship game.
This was a rematch from the
Thanksgiving game in which
the Eagles won. But this time
the Eagles were on the losing
end. The Cardinals offense
was stellar and Quarterback
Kurt Warner had 4 Passing
Touchdowns in which he
connected up with Wide
Receiver Larry Fitzgerald
three times. The Cardinals
won the game 32-25 and
advanced to the Super Bowl
for the first time in 62 years.
The Pittsburg Steelers crawled
their way into the Super Bowl
by knocking off Wild Card
winner San Diego 35-24.
The Steelers advanced past
the AFC Divisional Round
into the AFC Championship
game against the Baltimore
Ravens who won previously
by knocking off the best team
in the NFL, the Tennessee
Titans with a last second kick
to win the game 13-10. The
Steelers owned the Ravens all
night and wound up winning
the game 24-13, advancing
the Steelers to their 6 th Super
Bowl appearance in their
franchises history. Super Bowl
XXXXIII started off with the
Arizona Cardinals taking on
the Pittsburg Steelers. A year
ago the Cardinals would have
not been favored to make
the playoffs let alone make
the Super Bowl. The game
started off with Quarterback
Ben Roethlisberger running
into the end zone for a 2
yard touchdown but the
Cardinals challenged the call
and had the play reversed.
The Cardinals defense then
held the Steelers to a 18
yard field goal by Kicker
Jeff Reed making the score
3-0 in favor of the Steelers.
The score remained 3-0 into
the 2 nd quarter when second
year Fullback Gary Russell
scored on a 1 yard rushing
play making the score 10-0
in favor of the Steelers. The
Cardinals finally got onto
the board when Quarterback
Kurt Warner connected up
with Tight End Ben Patrick
making the score Steelers:
10 Cardinals: 7. The game
remained a stalemate until
the 2 minute warning of the
2 nd Quarter. Quarterback
Kurt Warner was on his
own goal line and threw a
Interception that was returned
by Defensive End James
Harrison 100 yards to the
house making the score 17-7
at the half. The Interception
Return was the longest
ever returned in the Super
Bowl’s forty-three years of
its existence. The Half Time
Show was capped off by “The
Boss” Bruce Springsteen and
the East Street band. This half
time show created the biggest
buzz of all the Super Bowl’s
and it lived up to its hype
with Bruce singing about four
songs and one of his newest
songs from his new album
“Working on a Dream.” The
3 rd Quarter kicked off with
the Steelers scorning on a
Jeff Reed 21 yard field goal
making the score Steelers:
20 Cardinals: 7. As the 3 rd
Quarter came to a close the
score was now Steelers:20
Cardianals:7. The Steelers had
been covering the Cardinals
Wide Receivers especially
Larry Fitzgerald all night
but this time Larry snuck
by the Steelers defense and
scored on a 1 yard passing
play by Quarterback Kurt
Warner making the score now
Steelers: 20 Cardinals: 14.The
Steelers had no answer for
the Cardinals as the Cardinals
defense stopped them in
their own end zone forcing
the Steelers to a Safety. The
score was now Steelers:
20 Cardinals: 16 with 5:28
left on the clock in the 4 th
quarter. The Cardinals got
the ball back and took the
lead with a 64 yard passing
play from Quarterback Kurt
“Never Will Get Old” Warner
to Larry “Fitz” Fitzgerald.
The score was now Steelers:
20 Cardinals: 23 with 2:58
left in the 4 th Quarter. The
Steelers had to answer by
scoring a field goal to tie
the game or go for the win
with a touchdown. The
Steelers elected to go for the
touchdown and win the game.
Pittsburg Quarterback Ben
Roethlisberger stormed down
the field and threw a 6 yard
passing touchdown to Wide
Receiver Santonio Holmes
with 42 seconds left in the
4 th Quarter. The score was
now Steelers: 27 Cardinals:
23. The Cardinals had one
last shot to score but had no
answer for the Steelers sacked
Quarterback Kurt Warner and
caused him to fumble the ball
with 15 seconds left in the
4 th Quarter. The Steelers won
Super Bowl XXXXIII 27-23
over the Cardinals. The game
came down to the line and the
Super Bowl XXXXIII MVP
was Wide Receiver Santonio
Holmes with his amazing
catch that won the game for
the Steelers.
Looks like good luck came to
the girls’ varsity team. New
players, new equipment, and
new teams to play excite the
lady cougars. Winning the
first two games with goals
scored by Britany Sanchez
3, Shelby Willis 2, Cheyanne
Taylor 1, and Amy Ellender 1
against Caney Creek 7:0 and
in the Galena park game goals
were scored by Krystal Horn,
Cynthia Ochoa, and Heather
Crosser-Miller and losing the
third against Kingwood Park
0:6. Working harder in practice
getting ready physically and
mentally for the next big game
against C.E. King to try and
once again pull them back up to
the top. Beating C.E. King 2:1
was just the boost the lady cougars
needed to lift their spirits
even higher than before. Losing
at the beginning of the first
half the girls took their break
between halves then came out
and stepped up their game by
scoring two goals [Britany Sanchez
1 and Cheyanne Taylor
1] and holding them off till the
game ended.
Crosby track season thru runner’s eyes
“Runners are the healthiest, sickest people alive according to ultra runner Jeff Robins.” That’s the truth though; we are
sick, healthy, and a little excited this time of year. It’s now the beginning of the 2009 track season.
As a runner, I myself am excited. It’s important to support your family, friends, students, and community as they compete
for Crosby High School. Last year Crosby had three state qualifiers and achieved two state gold medals (both won by Chance
Casey). This year we’re ready to achieve higher, stronger, and faster times than ever before. Don’t let this season pass you
by without being a witness to all the accomplishments of the Crosby High School track and field team! (Listed below are the
You don’t know how
much you mean to
me and I will not
leave you. You’re
my life, my love,
my world, my soul.
I love you with
everything I do and
nothing or no one
can ever take your
place in my heart.
Your perfect in every
way and I’m the
luckiest man alive. I
love you and always
will baby girl.
I think your really
cute and I wish I
could have been your
valentine, but I’m
too nervous to tell
you.
