Keeping Your Schedule
without Losing Your Sanity
By Merry Monteleone
Baby Naymes
By Janine Boldrin
A Note from Sandie
I hope you enjoy our back-to-school issue as you get
used to the routine of juggling school and after-school
activities again. Fall is a time of change at our house.
The most obvious difference, of course, is that we now
have a 4th grader and a 10th grader (not to mention the
occasional visit from our junior in college). There are
lunches to make, homework to assist with (or at least
ask about), soccer practices and games to attend, and
new teachers and classmates to adjust to. Still, I love this
time of year as the chill of fall starts to slip in.
Our first article fits perfectly with this time of year. In
“Keeping Your Schedule without Losing Your Sanity,”
Merry Monteleone gives useful tips for keeping home
and family life running smoothly for parents. Like me,
Merry is not a natural list-maker or schedule-keeper,
but she has learned that planning ahead and getting
organized makes life with kids a lot easier. It even allows
for more unstructured time to play and do spur-of-the
moment things with the kids.
In our humor article, “Baby Naymes,” Janine Boldrin
takes a look at the trendy and not-so-trendy baby
names she has run across as she tries to prepare for the
birth of her third child. She pokes a little fun at the ways
that her generation of parents has tried to find unique
spellings or names to distinguish their children from
their future classmates – only to find that there are lots
of other parents doing the same thing. Take a look and
see what she and her husband decided to name their
new little girl or boy.
For those of you following the progress of my family’s
literary forays, we are anticipating an October 2011
publish date of Scott’s middle grade historical novel
Russian Snows: Coming of Age in Napoleon’s Army. It will
be available in ebook form as well as paperback. Order
a copy at www.RussianSnows.com. Since the last issue,
Helen made a winning, one-minute pitch of her book,
Fifteen, at the Pitchapalooza event at Chester County
Books and Music. The prize is a personal introduction
to an agent or publisher. Meanwhile, both of them are
gearing up for another win in the annual NaNoWriMo
contest in November (more at www.nanowrimo.org).
What Parents have to say...
– Cover Story –
Local Dance Studio to Perform in
London during 2012 Olympics
Led by owner and International Dance Artist Michelle Jones-Wurtz, the Pottstown
Dance Theatre will be travelling to perform in London at the 2012 Summer Olympic Games.
The theatre was chosen by a search committee from the
American Alliance of Performing Arts Educators, a nonprofit
company that presents student arts organizations
both domestically and internationally. Nineteen dancers
will perform at the games. Guests and chaperones will
accompany the group on the trip and attend the performances
and events.
Pottstown Dance Theatre focuses on the growth of
students as individuals. They believe that since dance
is a performing art, performance experience is integral
to dance education. The teaching curriculum spans the
entire school year.
Students are placed in the level that will challenge
them technically, yet build and maintain self-confidence.
It is common to remain in the same level for more than
one year. Students are most successful when they progress at their own pace. The school
offers classes in Ballet and Pointe, Tap, Modern, Jazz, African, Hip-Hop, Creative Movement,
Irish, Break Dance, Highland, Musical Theater, and Pilates. The ballet program is based on
the Vaganova Syllabus, as set up by the school of the Kirov Ballet in Russia. The Theatre
welcomes the student who works toward a career in dance, as well as the student that
dances purely for the joy of movement and the benefits that transfer into daily living.
The Theatre is currently gearing up for the 2011-2012 school season and has classes
for children and adults. There are many styles and ability levels at the school, and students
have many options for putting together their own curricula. The “After-School”
program allows students to take classes they enjoy while learning an art form with friends.
“Intensive Program” students take three ballet classes weekly and one other dance style
such as Jazz, Modern, Tap, Hip-Hop, Break-Dance, African, or Irish. “Academy” students
come for four hours weekly during the daytime and have unlimited access to all classes
in the evening. “If you’re looking for a dance school that teaches true artistry and nurtures
talent, this is the area’s best,” said Ms. Wurtz.
Ms. Wurtz is no stranger to international dance performances in her career. For the
past eight years she has performed, choreographed, and taught at the International Dance
Festival in Ladek Zdroj, Poland, and she has toured the country as a performer. Her professional
company, Melange, the resident dance company of the Tri-County Performing Arts
Center, was a headlining group last year at the Festival. During her time overseas she
has worked with some of the world’s most prestigious dance professionals from France,
Switzerland, Poland, and Russia, to name a few. Currently two former principal dancers
from the Kirov Ballet, Andrei Ustinov and Elena Martinson, are faculty members at the
Theatre.
Keeping Your Schedule
without Losing Your Sanity
By Merry Monteleone
I’ve never been one of those naturally organized people. Before having kids, I was very much a
fly-by-the-seat-of-my-pants type of person. Sure I took care of my responsibilities but my schedule
was in my head, not organized in any way – and that worked fine for me. Add three kids with varying
activities and my whole system of winging it just wasn’t working anymore. I knew I had to adopt some
new habits to keep myself and my family on track.
File It!
Each one of my children drag home an amazing amount of
paperwork from school. The system of tossing it all on the dining
room table until I have time to go through it just doesn’t work.
Without some method for keeping these things, I miss important
notes and have to hunt through a stack of papers every time I need
to send back a form or figure out what they need for class.
My solution: A hanging file holder in the kitchen. Each child has
one file for their school class and separate files for each of their
activities. In the back file folder I keep a list of all of the numbers I
need for school and the information for the committees I volunteer
on. Now everything is organized in one easy place and I’m never
at a loss for what the kids need when they need it… well, at least
not with their school papers.
Save the Day
Every member of my family has their own schedule. Each of
their teams and clubs send out a full calendar of commitments for the season. At any given time I might
have seven separate calendars to keep track of, so I combined them. I replaced my small, kitchen
calendar with one that has extra large boxes for the days. Every time I get a new schedule from one of
the kids’ activities, I transfer the important dates to my kitchen calendar. This works for me because
my kitchen is my home base and I check the calendar often to make sure I’m not forgetting anything.
What’s on the Menu
One of the biggest hurdles I face is trying to keep a regular dinner schedule when things have us
running from one activity to the next. If I don’t plan meals, there’s absolutely no time for cooking – and
I can’t do fast food very often because it doesn’t agree with my stomach or my checkbook.
My solution: devise a menu. Once a week I look through the calendar and see what the upcoming
schedule looks like, and then I figure out dinner meals that work for each day. If we have football from
five until seven, I know it’s a good day to make a quick, easy dinner or break out the crock-pot in the
morning. If it’s a fairly light activity day, I know I can make a more elaborate meal. I’m still a fly-bythe-seat-of-my-pants
person at heart. Sometimes I’ll substitute pizza or grilled cheese sandwiches
because I just don’t feel like cooking. But planning the basics ahead of time means we have a homecooked
meal most days and it helps keep me on budget.
Time to Play
With all of this scheduling, you’d think that there would be very little time left to spend as a family.
Like most moms, the brunt of the workload for running the household falls on my shoulders. While
dad is outside enjoying some downtime with the kids, I still have a meal to prepare or clean up after.
These days, I now try to plan a little better. My oldest helps me clear the plates and the kids take
turns setting the table and getting the drinks. This way, we’re done in half the time and we still get
to enjoy each others’ company for a while. I’ve adapted this method for other household chores, too.
While my kids don’t always do the most thorough jobs, it’s a lot less effort to touch something up than
to do it all myself.
Taking Homework on the Road
I often joke that I didn’t have as much homework to do when I was in school as my kids do. When
you have more than one child, that time-span can add up rather quickly. When one or more is hopping
from activity to activity, trying to make sure they get it all done before bedtime can be daunting.
If I don’t check on each of them before heading out the door to someone’s practice, I know we’ll
come home late, needing dinner and baths, and wind up with assignments to complete on top of all
that. And if one of them needs help, well, let’s just say it’s not so easy to explain fifth grade math
while completing twelve other household chores. So, I make sure to check in with the one who has
practice and have them do their homework right after school. Depending on the other two’s workload,
they can complete some at home and take whatever still needs to be done with us to practice, along
with any supplies they need. This way, there’s enough time if one or all of them need help with their
assignments, without having to stay up too late or throw everything else off-kilter.
If you are a mom whose routine has become a series of activities to keep track of, adopting some
of these organizational tips might be a great way to make a little room in your life…without sacrificing
too much of your own “me” time.
Merry Monteleone balances her writing career while raising three active children.
She often thinks juggling sharp utensils would involve less precision.
Parent to Parent
Readers share their tips, hints, and advice on parenting
We spend so much time in the car during the fall – driving to soccer games, to and from
school, and on errands, and I’m finding that it’s a great time to have conversations with my
kids and even play some games. We play the conversation game – one person asks a question
of another person in the car and the other person answers in a complete sentence and gets to
ask a question of someone else. Or, we play a game where we describe a word and everyone
else has to guess what it is. Or, just talk one-on-one if it’s just two of us. Chauffeuring can be
a great way to connect as a family without other distractions!
My son sometimes complains about going to sports practice but my rule is he has to suit up
and go. If he chooses not to participate once we’re there, he still has to sit and watch the rest
of his team practice. Every single time he has decided to practice once we are actually there.
Share your tips with Parents’ Source readers!
By Janine Boldrin
In a corner of the playground are River and Skye. They are playing with little Autumn, even though
she usually comes with Sunday. Nearby, Gray, Scarlett, and Azure have commandeered the swings while
Sienna waits for a turn. In the sandbox, Zander hits Serenity on the head with a stick but he claims she
hit him first.
Now that I am pregnant, I listen to the names people give their children. The Internet swells with
advice, and the tabloid aisle is a big source of inspiration. While out with my two boys, I keep my ears
open. Naming baby number three is difficult among the sea of new choices. But even the unique seems
to have become commonplace. So what is a mother to do when it comes to finding an original name
Especially when Mercedes, Lexus and Armani have to use their last initial in preschool. And Caitlin,
Caitlyn, Kaitlin and Kaitlyn, much to their mothers’ horror, all ended up in the same classroom. So God
help their kindergarten teacher.
At the pediatrician, the nurse calls for Lindon (or Lyndon) and Madeline (or Madelyn, or maybe
Madelyne). Smith Sadie Smyth sits in a stroller while Edna Ami and Anne Brilane play with the blocks.
Churchill and Kipling are not getting along and are broken up by their mothers.
New parents use “Jaxon” instead of “Jackson.” They skip “Amelia” and choose “Emilia.” Don’t make
the mistake of using “Jason,” because in 2011 it is most certainly, “Jayson.”
(As a note, it’s Conor with one “n” not two, just in case you were wondering.)
Noah was once the guy with the Ark, not the kid who chews crayons. And Apple was once a computer
company and even before that, Red Delicious and Golden.
Today I met: Blender. Not among the toasters and microwaves but standing in line at a cash register
at Target.
Oh, and then there is Smiley. I can vouch that her parents got that one wrong. And let’s hope she
doesn’t end up working in Walmart.
Dakota was born in Brooklyn and Brooklyn was born in North Dakota. Bronx lives in California and
Paris lives in New York.
Keegan, Teegan and Meegan were born to an Italian family a few blocks away from an Irish family
who just had Genevieve. Love, Honor and Cherish live down the street but that might change because I
think their parents’ divorce will be finalized next week.
These days I hear mothers call: Silas. And they don’t mean “Marner.”
I know a Charly who is a girl and a Devon who is a boy, not to be confused with Devin, a girl, who
has a brother named Charlee.
A generation whose parents named their children James, Michelle, Nicole, and Kimberly, have
decided that their babies will go by Homer, Zuma, Seraphina, and Liberty.
So in making a decision on what to name our daughter, the new baby name books, Internet sites and
magazines are very little help. The unique names are already used up. There has to be something else.
Last week, at a Greek diner, I think we made a decision. No, it didn’t come from the waitress’s nametag
or the back of a menu. It came to us out of the blue with no need for us to Google the spelling.
A stroke of genius! And so simple it wouldn’t need to be repeated! Unique Well, I’ve haven’t heard
it uttered on a playground in at least a twenty-mile radius.
Our baby will be Jane.
But hey, if it turns out to be a boy, we might go with Octavius.
Raising Readers
These reviews of classic children’s literature provide discussion points and insights to help parents guide their children’s reading.
Number the Stars by Lois Lowry
Annemarie Johansen and her friend Ellen Rosen live in occupied Denmark during
World War II. They have grown used to the German soldiers (some are nice, but
others are threatening) that occupy the area.
There is talk that the Germans will soon round up all of the Danish Jews and send
them away. At first, innocent Annemarie is only puzzled by the talk since it doesn’t
apply to her. Then she grows concerned as she observes that her parents, and Ellen
are very upset since the Rosens are Jewish.
When word spreads that the round up is imminent, the Johansens join with other
Danes to try and hide their Jewish friends and help them escape across the sea to
neighboring Sweden. As the story progresses Annemarie helps her mother and
father in their efforts to save their friends, and discovers courage she didn’t know she had.
The character development offers a nice insight into a young child’s perception of events that are sensed
but not fully understood. In fact, the story manages to create a sense of foreboding without actually going
into the horrors of the Holocaust.
Depending on reading level, this story is for readers nine years old and up.
Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls
This story opens with Billy Coleman, now an adult, remembering back to when
he was ten years old and purchased two puppies. The story is told as a memory of
that time in his life.
Their family is poor and farms the land in the Ozark Mountains. Billy wants
two coonhounds very badly, but the family can’t afford the purchase. Billy’s father,
however, gives him three traps, and over the next two years Billy saves the money
he makes from trapping and other jobs and is finally able to purchase his hounds.
The responsibility of training and caring for his hounds takes center stage in Billy’s
ongoing development toward adulthood.
The themes of determination, love and maturity are explored as Billy slowly
comes of age.The end of the story is bittersweet. The money that Billy and his family
have earned and saved from farming and hunting allows them to move out of the mountains and into
a nearby town where the family will have a much better life and the children can go to school. However,
Billy’s dogs have died from a separate (and intense) adventure and are left behind – but not forgotten.
Depending on reading level, this book is for readers 12 years old and up.
