FOREWORD
It is the nature earth – where hazards exist in the form of environmental
processes or events with potential of causing a disaster. On the other hand, it is the
same earth where ecosystems and natural resources provide buffer and capacities
against the impact of disasters. Thus, our earth’s environment holds the key for
understanding and reducing disasters. Therefore, knowing and caring our environment
can help us protect from the impacts of disasters, which are otherwise growing in
numbers and intensities. This recalls us to remind Gandhiji’s thoughts that “Earth
provides enough to satisfy every man’s need, but not every man’s greed”.
Our children are our future and safeguarding the future of human race lies in
their hands. Concern of the children on safeguarding environment and reducing the
risk of disasters is need of the time. Students have juvenile but thoughtful young
minds with innovative ideas. NIDM tried to capture student’s ideas and innovations
through their poems and slogans on the theme ‘Safeguarding Environment for Disaster
Risk Reduction” by organizing nationwide competitions.
These contributions in the form of Hindi and English poems and slogans are
great knowledge in them and give a message in their own ways for reducing disaster
risks using environment based approach. NIDM has brought out this publication as a
compilation of these poems and slogans as an awareness drive for illuminating the
thinking process in masses and particularly in children on how environmental protection
can reduce disasters.
I am very optimistic about the use of this publication by various mass media,
local institutions, NGOs, education and awareness making institutions in their
programmes at local levels.
PREFACE
Hazards are the processes or the events of nature. Be it an earthquake, a
landslide, a flooding, drought or a chemical mishap – it relates to environment in its
occurrence. Environment, in the form of natural resource systems, hold a major
stake in people’s vulnerability to the impacts of these disasters. Concerns and
protection of environment within our development planning process as well as day to
day activities also reduced our exposure to the challenges of the disasters.
Climate-change is known to aggravate hazards and vulnerability related to
floods, drought, cyclone, landslides, epidemics and forest fires, besides increasing
social conflicts and miseries. Climatic conditions and environmental phenomenon
are also known to factor in the impacts of chemical accidents. NIDM has taken the
theme ‘Safeguard Environment for Disaster Risk Reduction’ for dissemination of
knowledge and creation of mass awareness.
This samskrit sloka indicates the role of knowledge about our environment
and ecosystems including earth processes for a wider perspective of risk perception
(assessment), disaster resistance (blend of avoidance, tolerance, resilience), capacity
and recovery potential backed with the ecosystem services and sustainability in the
environment where a particular community inhabits.
The book is an outcome of the awareness drive of NIDM for student’s concern
on environment for reducing disaster risk and vulnerability. Several schools across
the country participated in the competitions organized for slogan and poem writing in
Hindi and English to mark the occasion of the World Environment Day on June 5,
2012. Now, the poems and slogans are compiled, edited and presented in the form
of this book as a resource book for awareness programmes at any level of
communities, schools and local institutions.
Role of Shri Shekhar Chaturvedi in the endeavour from concept to
commissioning to printing has been significant. Ms. Sreeja S. Nair, Dr. Sushma Guleria
and Ms. Megha Kohli have been instrumental in managing the compilation of poems
and slogans. Design and editorial inputs of Sri Rajnish Goswami (NDRF) were
significant. Members of the Printing Committee - Dr. Surya Parkash and Shri S K
Tiwari need special mention of thanks for their cooperation.
Not the least, Prof. Vinod K. Sharma (IIPA) and presently Vice-chairman of Sikkim
State Disaster Management Authority, Prof. Santosh Kumar and Prof. Chandan
Ghosh, have been the source of encouragement.
Environment Warns
Oh! Dear Earthlings, don’t let me die
I nurtured you, day and night
It’s your turn now, to repay debt
Safeguard me, or face the threat
One day I will die, of thirst and hunger
Washed away by floods and thunder
Landslides, cyclones would destroy your world
I warn thee to heed my word
Left alone on desertified land
Sans food, water, shelter or stand
Dislocated lives Disbanded cities
You will cry for mercy and pity
If you understand value of living
Together let’s make a new beginning
I urge thee keep me intact
To mitigate disaster impact
Earth in Danger
I saw a beautiful dream
In which the earth was green.
I saw humanity there
But in reality, we don’t care
There is only violence
and all species are in danger
They are screaming for a saviour,
To control this behaviour.
Wildlife is up in smoke
Please please don’t poach!
Water is now turning into poison
Because of dirty hands of pollution
The ozone layer is
affected by carbon emission
The countries are increasing
their mass production
This can cause great disruption.
Human’s greed is more than needs,
And so have changed his deeds.
The blunder he is creating,
Is helping the environment in degrading.
It was his duty,
To glorify nature’s beauty.
But alas! He proved to be vain,
And all he did was for his gain.
But still there is trust,
That our environment can be as strong as the crust.
We must work very hard,
And save the environment till our last birthday card.
Or else we shall pave the way for the disasters,
That at last shall give us plasters...
The Curse and
the Redemption
Not long ago on geological clock
There lived a ‘goddess’ verdant and pristine
Bang came a ‘demon’ hungry and greedy
And robbed her of her beauty and sheen.
With water bodies choked and hills de-robed
Mines extracted and earth deforested
With atmosphere polluted and fossil fuels exhausted
Forests squeezed and land over used
The demon left her ravaged and abused.
Horrific hurricanes and droughts then dogged
Epidemics floods forest fires bogged
From the plants and woods
We in fact, Cut our lungs.
Increased fuel consumption
And plants destruction
And it is really life threatening
Degraded environment amplifying the disaster threat,
Climate change lampooning every breath.
Disasters ruining livelihoods, how will we put a stop
Protect Your Environment
Environmentalists tell us not to pollute a river,
It causes harm to fish,
But when do we listen,
We do what we wish!
We cut trees to build houses,
Instead of living in a town or city,
Environmentalists also tell us to do the same,
To live in a city with fun and simplicity!!
Many children go to the same school in different cars,
But not knowing that it’s burning fossil fuels,
It also gives out poisonous gases,
But we know a solution to it
That is by using a car pool!!!
So knowing that this can lead to global warming,
Saving natural resources is the best,
We will need it for the next generation,
and that is what is out test!!!!
Nature Says
See what ! See what!
Safeguard the environment for disaster risk reduction
Because global warming and air pollution has a big relation.
Global warming causes sea level to rise
floods and destruction is what that thrives
Reducing pollution is a solution wise
Public transport, carpool and CNG are great advice
See, what See, what Nature says
Reduce pollution and take out ways,
to make Earth a prosperous place
Chit-chatt -chit water flows
But chemicals and bacterial are all that glows
Cholera and jaundice are diseases that grows
Effecting the quality of life to such a great lose.
Chlorine and antioxidants are some suggestions
To prevent the rivers from bacterias germination
One evening there came a storm
I asked my mother
What’s wrong
I never saw storm in season of winter
Or have I not noticed it
Cause I lay sick
Last year in this season
My mother replied,
Its nature’s warning
Of global warming
Yes mother, I heard it from my teacher
As she was very eager
To tell us about the danger
That we are going to face
All, including the human race.
What she taught us correct
Mother spoke ahead,
But if you want to stop it
You have to save the nature from the harm made by us
On the earth’s creatures
I Said, yes we are the future
And will save our nature
From the disaster’s of every kind
River in Rage
Harm the nature & you’ll see
Playing with ecosystem is no fun
Bearing in mind that
Vengeance of nature spares none.
Trees have been chopped enough
To make floods reach the extreme stage
This is what can happen
When you put the river in rage.
River pays you back for your behaviour towards nature
Whether you’ll destruct it or save
Because the river can be as peaceful as a water fall
Or as turbulent as a tsunami wave.
Awareness on
Enviornmental Issues
Humans should be aware
As the disasters come any where
We are so busy in fulfilling our needs
So that we forget to grow healthy nature seeds
You are cutting down trees blindly
due to which environment can’t treat you kindly
Day by day industries are creating so much pollution
By Growing more & more trees is the only solution
So humans should be aware
as the disasters come anywhere.
Cry No More
Darkened clouds, wind and rain
Left alone with all this pain
Landslides always drag me down
Trapped for days, will I be found
Flooded plaws inside my head
Tornadoes draw near, leave me for dead,
Drought from tears I know not far
I’ve cried for days, I Cry no more
Hurricane waves pound on my shore
I’m drowning on my bedroom floor.
this natural bridge from heart to heart,
Collapsed in shreds has fallen apart.
Safeguard Environment and
Reduce Disaster
The magnanimous mellows, the soothing sky
Love their mother, sweet and serene.
She gives us food, She gives us clothes,
She gives us shelter and love
And by destroying her, we are harming ourselves.
So, we must safeguard and grow more trees.
Or otherwise human existence would cease.
If we try to take control of environment in our hands,
Its fury would burst up and destroy these vast concrete lands.
Let’s grow smart, be not its master,
Instead safeguard the environment and reduce disaster.
Make World a Better Place
Earthquakes, Tsunamis and Tornadoes
Erupted the life of people, not even left
their shadows
All these disasters come in a fright
It’s we who need to be ready to turn their impact light
We’ve suffered for years,
The cry of people is difficult to bear
We need to protect the environment and make a better plan
So we do not face the situations, we saw recently in Japan
It’s high time we must heal the world to make it a better place.
for you and for me and the entire human race.
Fury of God
Tsunami, Tsunami
Why do you trouble me
When comes a gail
It leaves me frail
After a storm
Everything is calm
Then comes the flood
A chill runs in my Blood
In summers a drought
my throat feels hot
Oops! a Sandstorm
Destroys my body form
God! a forest fire
which grows wilder
What about an earth quake
Which makes all shake
God says pray and prepare
To take care
And Safe Guard the environment
To help in
Disaster management!!!
Man and Environment
Man is so selfish
Polluting water of lakes and distrubing fish
Building big beautiful houses in city.
Doesn’t want to live in simplicity
If today we will cut the trees
Later there will be no more to see.
If we will keep on doing this for next 4-5 years
I believe soon extinction of everything is sure
The man who is doing this in just nights and days
Earth will also treat man in same way.
so, I request treat earth with distinction
Or surely face extinction....
Beauty of Mother Nature
I am a child, born to see the beauty of mother nature
But what is this I’m seeing seems there’s no lift for future
How can man behave so much as a slaughter
After all its our mother earth and we are like its daughter
Deforestation in our world is one of the major nuisances
Which is done on a large scale because of our ignorance
Tsunami are often very disastrous and just hit back
But we can use our knowledge and technology, which we no more lack
And can safeguard ourselves from its evasion
By making tsunami alarm to know its occasion
I’m just a child pleading for your cooperation
Helping our environment for the next generation.
Escaping Disaster
A disaster in no time leads to many person’s demise
To escape such risk we have to take an early rise
Many are engulfed by the disaster
To protect their lives, we have to take steps faster
It frowns their relatives left behind
As they are helpless to get their loved ones find
To take preventive measures is the best
From facing the consequences and the rest
Practice mock drills to be ready for it any time
And if it strikes take steps to make everything fine.
Weather forecasts and predictions about cyclone
Can protect the lives of many even in the areas most prone
In case a fire strikes use of sand bags is the best
As being cheapest of the rest
There’s nothing we can’t do, everything is in our hands
Then why can’t we make the ones, who fall and again stand
From the disaster, take them out who are in need
Dear friends you would feel nice, by doing a good deed.
Safety Isn’t Expensive,
Its Priceless.
Planet Earth is our Mother
Provides food & water to nurture
Embodied with amazing creations of nature
Care for earth & save our future
Disasters are natural and inevitable
Leave immense impact on life & environment
Training make us less vulnerable
To counter nature’s fury
Street play, dramas and mock drills
Sensitize us towards surroundings and its relations
Make us aware about precautions of quake and floods
And helps to avoid nature’s annihilation
Every hazard recognised is an accident avoided
Awareness of situations is help provided
Equipment and medical aid to be systematically divided
To help them and help others when the time arises
Let us join hands and pledge
And construct a simple and sweet hedge
To safeguard ourselves against disasters
Around the world, so we can rule as masters!!!!!!!!!
Be Guilty....
Be guilty of polluting air
Be guilty of polluting water
The Lovers Trip
While on a distant trip
Going all the way with crisp
It just ended up this way
Over the world full of hay
Like an oyster is cruel
But still searches for the pearl
It just ends this frontier
Over the earth’s Fateful Encounter
Cause when one door closes
Just as life mosses
Another open for us
Over it as a fuss
But we are so regretful
Aren’t able to see what’s beautiful
Life the soul of love
Will one day, fly like dove
But the way we see him
Will one day come trim
Over man’s hate
Will change our fate
