A Message From the Directors
It was so nice seeing all of our families this week at our
two Visiting Days. Thank you for taking the time out of your day
to join us and see for yourselves why your children love Gesher so
much. It is very enjoyable for me to spend time with our parents
and hear all of their wonderful camp stories.
I wanted to update you on some recent exciting
developments. As you may have heard, the Joseph Kushner
Hebrew Academy (our parent organization) recently rezoned a
portion of its property upon which our camp resides and is
evaluating alternatives for it. While nothing has been finalized at
this time, we wanted to let you know that no matter what JKHA
decides to do with the rezoned property, there will be no nearterm
impact to Gesher. In the longer term, we are pleased to
report this represents an opportunity to substantially upgrade our
fields and facilities.
To be clear, there will be no change to our camp’s
operations before at least the end of the summer 2013 season,
ensuring that Gesher Summer Camp will continue to operate its
great program just the way it is for at least two more years after
this summer.
To ensure the continued future success of our camp, we are
in the process of drawing up architectural plans to relocate the
impacted areas to another site on our property, should the need
arise. It is every camp director’s dream to
create a camp from scratch, and in the event
significant changes would need to occur, we
anticipate being able to offer a continuous
Gesher camp experience on a new state-ofthe-art
camp facility that would be ready
and fully functional for the summer of 2014.
Galil
Week 3 of Gesher brought all new adventures and surprises for us in Galil! There have been
new experiences for us every day! We welcomed a bunch of new campers this week just in
time for Clown Dress-Up Day! We laughed at “Circus Boy” the hysterical juggler, wore our favorite
baseball jerseys with pride and swam in the beautiful summer weather! Having our families
and friends to come see us on visiting day was a true treat! We ended the week with our
incredible overnight at Gesher and our trip to Dorney Park and Wild Water Kingdom! It was
a day of nonstop fun with all of the awesome rides and water
slides! Thursday night we had a yummy ice cream party and on
Friday we had breakfast for lunch! We can’t wait next week with
the Super Swim-A-Thon and our second trip!
Negev
Wow! This week was awesome. All of Negev has
been having such an amazing time at Gesher! It was
so much fun dressing up like clowns at camp. Scott
made everyone giggle when he stepped onto the
busses. Baseball team dress up day was great.
Everyone was able to show their support for their
favorite baseball teams. Visiting day was really
awesome. It was exciting for all of the Negev
campers to show off their great skills to their parents.
The campers had a blast showing off their swimming
skills for their parents. This week continued to get
even more exciting when all of Negev went to Space
Odyssey. There were so many great arcade games,
as well as bowling, laser tag, and a huge indoor
jungle gym. It really was such a blast for all. Wizard
dress up day was a great way to finish off the week.
Negev campers loved dressing up in their favorite
wizard costumes. To complete the week, all of Gesher
campers joined together in the auditorium for Kabalat
Shabbat. It was so nice and special to celebrate the
upcoming Shabbat with the whole Gesher community.
This past week has been filled with so many great
and fun activities! Gesher really is amazing!
Ropes
The campers have been having a great time at Ropes
this summer! Our Pre-K, K, and 1 st graders have been
enjoying low ropes. So far this year we have crossed
islands using two planks of wood to make a bridge.
We have pretended to be flies going through the holes
in our spider web. We also have walked on a cable
suspended about six inches above
the ground. The second grade
through senior age groups have
been conquering our high ropes
course. They have been climbing
our easy and hard walls and
walking on cables suspended high
in the air.
Photography
At Camp Gesher, it's all about the
memories! And there's no better way to capture
all the great moments we are having at Gesher
than through Photography! All the campers, from
Kinneret through Galil, can be found throughout
camp snapping photos. Once their photos are
printed they get to be creative and work on a
variety of projects from memory books to frames
and hand colored
photos that will help
them to remember
their summer of 2011
for a lifetime!
and easy to make and the kids all loved it!
In our dance class, we dance all
kinds of genres. Some examples
are: Modern dance, Israelien dance,
hip hop, and break dance. The boys
and girls together are participating
in this fun activity, having a great
time, and also learning a little bit of
Hebrew. :)
Phineas, (not to be confused with Phineas and Ferb) was the grandson of Aaron the Priest and was
rewarded with the “covenant of peace” (briti shalom). The word “covenant” is used here, not in the sense of a compact
between two people, but as an unconditional promise on G-d’s part. In addition to the Divine blessing with which his
action was rewarded, it received great admiration of future generations. A second promise to Phineas on G-d’s part
was that the High Priesthood was to remain with his descendents. Rashi, the classic 11 th Century commentator, points out
that the “covenant of peace” is referring to G-d’s assurance of a friendly attitude towards him.
One of the highlights of my year is to see the unconditional warmth and friendliness we witness of our Gesher
campers towards one another. It certainly draws great admiration from all of us. I’m confident that it will last for many
months and years to come. Our daily benching, davening and just overall ruach will plant seeds for many generations
to come.
Shabbat Shalom to all!
