Boating tragedy in Oz
Top international figure skating judges and promising skater die in tragic Sydney Harbour accident
I n
a tragic boating accident in Sydney's famous Harbour Bridge area, one of the busiest
waterways in the world, three top figures in Australian skating have lost their lives in a crash
between a small launch and a Ferry. After the collision, one of the casualties, 14 year old
Queensland State Novice Champion Morgan Innes, was missing and her body was only found
six days later.
The passengers, on
board the 10 metre
cruiser the Merinda,
were on a pleasure
cruise in the Bay,
enjoying time off from a
seminar being run by
top US figure skating
coach Kathy Casey at the
Canterbury Olympic Ice
Rink in Sydney.
The accident happened
in the late evening, when
the 30 metre Catamaran
Ferry slammed into the
wooden cruiser. There
has been a history of
boating collisions in the
area, with reports of
over 200 collisions in the
past few years, the most
recent just a week
previously when a Ferry
ploughed into a fishing
boat. The Merinda
accident however, is
reported to be the
worst in 80 years
according to the Sydney
Morning Herald.
Also killed in the
accident were Dr. Alan
Blinn (47) who had only
Died - Morgan Innes
recently been elected President of the New south
Wales Ice Skating Association, International
skating judge Simone Moore (44) and a 45 year
old work colleague of Dr. Blinn's known only as
Jaimie.
Former Australian Olympic skater Liz Cain, who
lost her left ankle in the accident, was heroically
saved by her son, Australian Mens Champion Sean
Carlow (22). Ms Cain, with her brother Peter,
represented Australia in the 1980 Olympic Pairs
event, was one of Australia's top coaches, and
young Morgan Innes was one of her students.
Wreckage of the fated Merinda
In just seconds, two of Australia's six international
judges have been tragically killed - a huge blow
to the skating community. And the community
was dealt a further blow when it was discovered
that a visiting Belgian judge, Rita Zonnekeyn (45)
also suffered a crushed pelvis in the crash.
The National Ice Skating Association, Ice Link, and
all our members and skaters in the UK, extend
Survivor Liz Cain with son Sean Carlow
their deepest sympathy to the families of those
who were lost, the whole Australian skating
community, and a speedy recovery to all those
injured. (Both Liz and Rita remain poorly).
Nottingham Teams win Gold
and Silver in Netherlands
Two Nottingham Synchronized skating teams have returned victorious from the Netherlands
bearing gold and silver medals believed to be the first ever for British teams at an
international IJS competition. The Gold was won by the Nottingham Novice team NIC
Shadows, and skating after their fellow team mates Silhouettes who had taken the silver medal
in the Juvenile category, the pressure was certainly on them. Despite a fall in the programme
the team skated superbly and took 1st place by a considerable margin of points.
With Silhouettes victorious at the recent British RJS Synchro Championships in Sheffield, and Shadows
the Novice Champions at the Deeside British Championships last November, this new success on
their first international stage was very much the icing on the cake!
At the award ceremony all the teams were allowed to have some fun. The British teams started off a
conga, and it was amazing seeing other teams joining in on what must have been one of the longest
ever congas on ice, with all the different costumes making a wonderful splash of colour.
Link Editor's Comment
The recent boating tragedy in
Australia has been felt by many
people in our close-knit skating
world, and those who died or were
seriously injured were close friends
to many of our own British skaters
and judges. It brings into harsh
reality that life really is too short,
and can be so suddenly brought to
an end. Our thoughts go to their Bryan Morrice - Editor
families.
With this in mind I must turn to increasing reports of
disturbing instances of petty bickering and cyber-bullying
within our own skating circles in the UK. It seems that this
nasty means of communication is not just afflicting our
sport, it is prevalent in our schools as well. I read
recently a newspaper report of a police investigation into
a hate campaign mounted, via internet, by pupils against
pupils, and cyber-bullying of teachers by pupils. Only
last week as I write, even the government has been
involved, following complaints by a Teacher's Union.
Indeed, the Union has now publicly stated that they are
actively seeking a test case, and will prosecute both the
perpetrators (children they may be) and the website
providers for libel and/or harassment.
There are several websites currently being used by
children to smear, bully and hurl abuse at other children,
and their teachers and coaches. Myspace, and Bebo are
two such websites, which since 2005 have developed into
an on-line community of over 30 million users worldwide.
Used responsibly, these can be great fun and useful
communication tools. Equally, children being children
they can be so easily abused.
So, parents, do you know what your kids are up to when
on-line. It IS happening, and it must NOT continue.
Such stupid pettiness is brought into perspective by the
tragic events in Australia.
Letters to
the Editor
Thanks for all your letters after an empty postbag
recently - please keep them coming!
Dear Ice Link
Please note the following is part of
one of the NISA Bulletins which have
been issued. I would like skaters /
organizers to read my personal
comments and if they have any
strong feelings about it to let NISA
and the skating press know.
Bulletin 26 - Open Competition
Result Calculation (23 Dec 2006):
As from 1 Jan 2008, organizers of
Open Competitions will be
required to use the Ice Calc Result
software in order to obtain a NISA
permit. It is proposed to hold a
training seminar during the solo
dance final in Nottingham in July
2007. NISA will make the Ice Calc
dongles available if clubs/rinks do
not own their own copies, as part
of the permit fee. More
information will be available
shortly.
Why re-invent the wheel? The British
Ice Dance Solo Qualifiers are not
International Competitions. The
current computer system Skate Score
works very well and most organizers
now have 2 or 3 people who can
safely operate it throughout the
entire Qualifier.
If NISA are going to insist on a new
system which means clubs have to
go on courses to learn it and then
pay NISA to hire it, plus all the hassle
of getting and returning the system,
two major things will happen:-
* Some of the referees have already
said they will stand down.
* The clubs will cease to hold the
competition as their costs will rise
even further.
Ice costs, judges expenses, catering,
trophies and medals, printing,
stationery, postage, Red Cross or St.
Johns Ambulance personnel means
the total costs are around £3,000 to
hold a good qualifier. NISA must
remember all the people organizing
these events, the Referees, the
Judges and the club helpers, all
participate voluntarily for:
* Their love of the sport, and to
encourage skaters to reach their
potential.
* To make sure no more ice dance
clubs disappear due to weekly
running costs
NISA must support the Clubs who
need to make funds to pay for
private club ice time throughout the
year.
Youngsters and adults alike are club
members from grass roots and some
go on to competitive skating, both
youth and adult. Without the clubs
New NISA Vice
Chair appointed
On Thursday 22nd
February the NISA
Board met and it was
agreed that Alan Seabrook
would take over the role as
Vice Chair of the NISA board
with immediate effect.
Nick Russell has decided to step
aside as the Vice Chairman of
NISA due to his increased work
commitments with PMP where
he is the Managing Director.
With the ever-increasing
workload for the Chairman and
Vice Chairman Nick believes it is
appropriate that somebody else
takes on this role at this time.
Nick proposed Alan Seabrook
for the role, which was
unanimously agreed by the
Board. Nick will continue in
an active role as the Commercial
and Communications Director on
the Board.
to encourage and nurture skaters
NISA would not have members.
Therefore NISA, please leave the
current marking system in place for
British Ice Dance Solo Qualifiers and
keep new systems for Championships
and Internationals.
Don't fix things which work
successfully, spend time and money
on the areas which need attention.
Julia H. Greenhough
Ed: Keith Horton has replied to
this matter:
It is appreciated that not
everyone has followed the
progress of the introduction of
the International Judging System
into the UK and therefore it was
felt that the decision to make the
use of IceCalc compulsory should
be explained in greater detail to
club and rink competition
organisers.
NISA is now confident in the use
of the full IJS result system,
having completed two seasons of
IJS events and Championships.
Looking to the future, when all
competitions and championships
are IJS based, we need to ensure
that the results calculation
system used is the same
throughout the UK. This will also
give you as well as NISA the
opportunity to link all results to
the NISA website in exactly the
same format.
It now seems the perfect timing
to begin to prepare for this
although, due to the complex
nature of the new system,
implementation of IJS at all
events is not envisaged much
before 2010. To this end,
training for all judges will be
commencing shortly as will the
adaptation of individual
competition criteria.
The original RJS (6.0) system is
very similar in set up and
operation to the new ISUCalc IJS
system lending itself to the first
stage training for the IJS system.
John Donnelly, who many of you
will know, has vast experience of
the system in both formats and
has worked with NISA throughout
the implementation of the IJS
system. He has very kindly
agreed to moderate at a training
seminar for results officials at
Nottingham during the Solo
Dance Championships on 16th
and 17th July 2007.
Each club/rink is invited to send a
representative(s) to this seminar,
at no charge, in order to facilitate
the training and implementation
of the system.
NISA would encourage those who
are used to running alternative
systems to attend and not
perhaps be concerned at using a
new system. John will run the
sessions in a very informal
manner and there will be relevant
documentation available and
ongoing back up as required.
Please be aware that Permits will
only be granted to Events where
the IceCalc system is used and
there will be no exceptions.
Events which are not permitted
(Sanctioned) will naturally cause
skaters and judges to become
ineligible.
It is planned to provide a copy of
the software. NISA will make
dongles available for sale or hire
basis if clubs do not already have
their own.
Places on each of the one day
seminars will be allocated on a
first come first served basis with
a maximum number at each
session. Dependant on numbers,
it may be necessary to restrict
representatives to one per
Club/Rink.
Any results officials who have
previous knowledge of IceCalc
but who also wish to attend are
very welcome as long as places
are available.
Letters are being sent to all
affiliated clubs together with
application forms. In the first
instance these forms should be
returned to Alexis Bovington at
the NISA office or email to
alexis.bovington@iceskating.org.
uk no later than 7th May 2007.
In order to ensure that all clubs
have received this information
they are asked to return the form
even if they do not wish to send
a representative.
The implementation of the new
system is a major change for all
ISU members and whilst it is
appreciated that we are
comfortable with the familiarity
of the RJS system we have to
embrace the change and move
forward.
Keith Horton General Secretary
Dear sir,
I have visited Ice Sheffield on
several occasions and always feel
saddened to see the beautiful
statue of John Curry hidden away in
the top corner of the ice pad,
where it is impossible to recognize
who it is. Why has he been
delegated to the corner - has he
been a naughty boy or do people
not care about our great skating
legends? If John is surplus to
requirements at Sheffield and this
certainly seems to be the case, why
not bring this wonderful statue
back to Nottingham where it was
more people, feel quite strongly
that John Curry was an inspiration
to skating and where is the point of
having a statue of him only to be
shoved away in a corner.
Barbara Pepper, Notts
Ed: Keith Horton has written
personally to Barbara
Dear Barbara
I share your frustration that we
have not been able to find a
suitable prominent position for
the statue.
We had always intended the
statue should be situated in a
public area however, this is not
possible unless we provide a
concrete plinth to raise the
statue above ground level and
also encase the complete statue
in either a glass or perspex case.
Nottingham was unable to
provide an area within their
atrium public area and we did
have early discussions with
Sheffield about the possibility of
placing John in their reception
area. However, the costs of
providing the plinth and case are
very high and NISA does not have
monies for this purpose in the
budget. Both Nottingham and
Sheffield also have issues with
both Health and Safety and Fire
Regulations (emergency
evacuation etc) that again proved
insurmountable to placing the
statue in the public area.
It is appropriate that the statue
should be situated in Sheffield as
this is our National Centre for
Figure skating and we do
continue to explore the
possibility of providing a more
prominent position. During the
recent European Short Track
Championships NISA Chairman
again spoke to management of
Sheffield but again, problems of
both financial and health and
safety reasons arose.
I have also had conversations
with the owners of the
Birmingham Ice Rink which, as you
know, is currently closed
however, should planning
permission be granted to
redevelop and reopen this site
we are looking at the possibility
of building into the design of the
new building, a plinth and casing
for the statue. Indeed, the
owners of the Birmingham rink
are anxious to develop a small
museum to John Curry should
they be successful in reopening
the building.
Finally and to re-iterate, we do all
share your concerns and
frustrations and we will continue
to try to find a suitable home for
the statue in the near future.
Diane Towler - Where It All Began
An interview by
Hurriye Omer &
Helga Dobor
Londoner Diane Towler, and Birmingham born
Bernard Ford, were brought together as
teenagers by the legendary Ice Dance Coach
Gladys Hogg, to train at Queen's ice rink in central
London, where they forged a formidable team that
would go on to become British, European and
World Champions.
They dominated the World Ice Dance scene in the
1960s, introducing great innovation to the sport,
winning 4 successive European and World titles from
1966 - 69, and participating in the Grenoble Winter
Olympics of 1968, where Ice Dance was an exhibition
event. Diane returned as a Coach to the 1972
Q: What was it like working with your coach, Gladys
Hogg? Could you tell us a bit about her?
DT: She was a great coach and very strict. She must be
the only coach in history to have 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in
Dance at the European and World Championships in
1968. [Towler & Ford, Yvonne Suddick & Malcolm
Cannon, Janet Sawbridge & Jon Lane].
I thank her so much for everything that she did. She
was a perfectionist, if we ever stopped running
through, we would then have to skate a back to back
programme. I remember she made us wear matching
tops for training, and once we didn't say "Good
all work together.
Q: As the technical requirements are so precise for
Ice Dance these days, and there is less room for
creative freedom, what is your opinion of the merits
of CoP (IJS)? Do you think it's an improvement on
the previous system?
DT: I think it is still so new, but at the moment I think it
has taken a lot of the creativity away. I think it needs
to be worked on a bit more.
Q: What is the biggest difference between Ice
Dance when you competed and Ice Dance now? Is it
possible to compare?
teaching them. Something new is always great. In the
world of skating, you are always learning, it doesn't
matter how long you have been in the sport. I am
looking forward to the new dances too.
Q: What do you think of British Figure Skating and
Ice Dance now?
DT: We have a great Performance Director at the
moment. [Former British Pairs Champion, Catherine
Barker].
She is working hard, making sure the Squad can reach
their full potential in the sport. She is new, and we will
see the results in coming years.
European Championships in Gothenburg,
DT: The differences I think are the Lifts, they are Q: Do you think the Dancing On Ice TV Celebrity
where her couple Janet Sawbridge & Peter
amazing now! Skating technically in my day was still show has had a positive influence in raising the
Dalby won the Bronze Medal.
very precise, as it is now, but it has changed an awful profile of skating generally in the UK?
During the Towler & Ford era, 4 Compulsory
DT: Yes definitely, it's great. Last year our rink was very
Free Dance. An Original Set Pattern Dance
was introduced in 1968, but this was still
classified as a Compulsory. Strangely, couples
were allowed to choose a rhythm to
interpret, until the 1971-2 season's Samba
rhythm was scheduled.
technically accomplished at the
Compulsories, ahead of the Russians, did
you practice them most, or devote equal
time to all aspects of training, the Free
dance and Original as well during your
competitive days?
pupils skate a perfect programme, or sitting in the
Kiss & Cry and looking up at good scores?
DT: For me it is seeing pupils skate well. The scores are
not always right, but if I know they have skated their
best, I am happy.
Q: What's the most stressful? Skating at a
competition, or standing at the boards and seeing
your pupils compete on the ice?
DT: Standing at the boards, because you are not in
control of
what they are
doing.
Q: What do you think we can do to have Skating
broadcast regularly on the BBC again, as it was when
you competed, to be shown along with Football,
Rugby, Golf, etc. and no longer be a minority sport
only for the diehard fans?
DT: I don't know, as many people do enjoy watching
skating, and I can't really understand why it isn't shown
more. The only thing really is to have some more
success in British skating.
Q: Amongst your pupils, there were a lot of great
skaters - British Champions - can you give us a few
examples?
DT: When I was training a lot of work went
into the Compulsories. They were broken
down and practised until they where perfect. My
coach wanted them perfect!!! We worked just as hard
on the OD and FD, but technically, our coach was very
strict on the compulsories.
When I competed we worked on all the different
Compulsories all the time, as they were drawn at the
Championships itself. We had to do more sequences
then as well.
Q: Do you regret that they have been whittled down
to one CD per event - if at all, the GP Final has none
- as surely learning the Compulsories is the essence
of learning to Ice Dance?
DT: Yes, I do think it is a shame. It is the essence of
learning Dance, but now an awful lot of work has to
go into the OD and FD, it would probably be too
much.
Q: As a huge fan of the Compulsories, do you, like
me, fear that one day they may eventually be
abolished at major competition level?
DT: I am a big fan myself. I think they will stay, as they
are such a big part of Ice Dance and make it what it is.
Q: What was the absolute highlight of your
competitive career?
DT: Many things! But I think it must be winning our first
World title.
Q: As you and Bernard Ford followed in a long line
of British Champions who became World Champions,
Demmy & Westwood, Jones & Markham, Jones &
Denny, during the 1950s and 1960s, did you have
Morning", so she wouldn't teach us
for three weeks. She made us
smart, polite and strong people.
Q: What was the skater's life like
back then?
DT: It hasn't changed at all, the
only thing is the money. Prize
money never existed, which is a
shame, because I would probably
now have a big Holiday Home in
the sun!
Q: What did you do after retiring
from competitive skating? Did
you start coaching right away?
DT: I did shows in England and
Russia mostly, and coached for a
while. Then Bernard went to Canada, and I started
teaching full time in Streatham, and I am still there to
this day!
Q: What did you miss the most about competitive
skating?
DT: The thrill of competing.
Q: Do you still skate?
DT: Yes I do, but only demonstrating technical steps.
Q: When Bernard Ford left for Canada, as many of
our skaters and coaches do, were you tempted to
follow him, or take up a post coaching in North
America? [We're very glad you stayed incidentally!]
Q: How do DT: Janet Sawbridge & Peter Dalby - 3rd in Europeans,
you feel when and 4th in Worlds. Mark Bosley & Debbie Burne - 5th
you meet Junior Worlds. Alan Abretti & Liz Coates- 11th in
rivals from Europeans and 16th at Worlds. Phillipa Towler-Green
your
& Philip Poole - 2nd in Nationals and European
competitive Competitors. Phillipa & Robert Burgerman - Junior
career at British Champions. Candice Towler-Green & James
competitions Phillipson - Twice Junior British Champions. Numerous
now? Is there others who have been Junior champions.
still rivalry as Q: Is there one most memorable moment from your
coaches too? coaching career?
DT: The rivalry DT: Many, many in my coaching career.
was only ever
on the ice. I Q: Did you meet a special skating person in your
meet many life who made an impression? Did you have idols
friends now, when you competed?
and it's great. DT: I met Sonja Henie just before she died. She was
Skating is one dressed head to foot in pale blue mink and looked
big family. stunning! A real diva. I admire all skaters who reach
Q: Going back to the Compulsories, where Ice a high level, I understand the hardship and effort
It was a great honour, we wish you all the best for
DT: It has been great learning the new dances and the future, and many thanks for talking to us.
Board Elections June 2007
an ambition with Bernard to move the discipline on
into the modern era, and hopefully one day see it
as an Olympic Sport, which eventually happened in
1976?
DT: No, I have had many offers, but London is where I
was born and raised. It is such a big part of me and my
family, I would miss it all too much. I am very happy
where I am, and still skating.
The current 3 year term for Board Directors of Ice Skate UK (Scotland) Ltd (Sk8scotland) will
shortly expire and nominations are invited from full or coaching Sk8scotland members to
stand for election at the AGM to be held on 17th June 2007.
DT: Well, actually Bernard and I brought Ice Dance to
the Olympics. We did a test run in the 1968 Olympics
in Grenoble. We did have an ambition to move it
forward, we tried to be different with our costumes,
Diane's twin daughters Pippa & Candi were born in an
auspicious year for British Ice Dance, 1984, on 11th
May. It was during the World Championships in
Ottawa, Canada, in March, when Diane was invited to
To be eligible to stand, you must be a full or life member (over 18) and satisfy at least two of the
following: (a) born in, or of parents born in Scotland (b) resident in Scotland for minimum 12 months (c)
member of Scottish club affiliated to Sk8scotland/NISA. Coaching member candidates must be licenced
NCCP coaches, active in Scotland.
music and ideas in our programmes. We started doing
Lifts in our "Zorba the Greek" programme.
Q: Many younger fans know your 1968 World
Championship winning performance of the "Zorba
The Greek" Free dance, because the BBC showed it
in their '100 Greatest Sporting Moments' series, was
that your favourite FD?
DT: Yes, it was. The music is great! My mother actually
heard the soundtrack while we were in America once.
I fell in love with it, as did Bernard, and our coach Miss
Hogg. It was a big risk when we did it, as music like
that had never been used before.
Q: I also saw a beautiful exhibition to "Moon River"
which I loved, so soft and lyrical, skated at a show
in Britain for BBC TV, do you have fond memories of
that routine?
DT: Yes, it was also one of my favourite programmes
to skate to.
Q: Did you choreograph your routines yourselves?
DT: Our coach was great, she would let us put our
own style and feelings into our routines, and advise us
what looked good and what didn't. She was very
strict, and made sure we were training hard and right.
Q: What were your strengths and weaknesses as a
partnership with Bernard? Also as skaters and ice
dancers individually?
DT: Our strengths as a partnership and skaters were
the same. We were both hungry for success and
give her expert comments on Torvill & Dean's
Compulsory Dances live on BBC's Breakfast Time show,
that the twins made their first *appearance* on TV!
The narrower hockey rink in Ottawa caused problems
for some of the Dancers in skating the CD patterns, and
at one point Diane remarked that it looked like Chris &
Jayne were very close to the barrier.
During the European Championships in Warsaw this
year, after Pippa & Phillip Poole skated the Golden
Waltz in their second appearance at this level,
highlights of her Mother's victories were shown on a
large screen in the Arena during the Zamboni break.
Q: How do you find coaching both your daughters
and their partners, is it ever tricky being a Mother
and Coach, or do you all just get on with it and not
have any problems?
DT: I have had so many skaters and experiences over
the years. Skaters who are not your kids can be even
more tricky! I can tell them how I feel. It was
something I never really expected with them both, it
all happened so quickly! I don't find it tricky at all, of
course we have our moments, but being on the ice
and off the ice, we are different. I told them when
they were little, "I am your Coach on the ice, and your
Mummy off."
Q: Do you feel it has been difficult for them, as
their Mother had such an illustrious career, at times
they may have felt the pressure of the famous
Towler name when competing?
Sk8scotland is specifically responsible for the efficient and timely delivery of UK (NISA) policies and
programmes in Scotland. Elected directors must meet the requirements expected of a 288 Director as
defined under the Companies Act.
After its first three years in operation, the Sk8scotland Board has recently reviewed the titles, roles and
responsibilities of the original 7 portfolio directorates, and has concluded that as the Association is
primarily concerned with delivery of UK (NISA) national programmes, particularly at grass roots and
development levels, a more discipline focused structure makes more sense. Sk8scotland, as a a devolved
Governing Body, has no responsibility for the creation or adaptation of new policy, rules or regulations
instigated by NISA, the UK NGB, however it has a duty to identify local difficulties due to different regional
conditions (eg multi-functionality of facilities; curling; seasonality; lack of volunteer resource etc), to advise
their effect on the sport, and to propose solutions to the NISA Board for discussion.
There are 7 Portfolio director positions available on the Sk8scotland Board:
1. Finance & Organisation
5. Speed Director (Scotland)
Responsible for audit/finance & commercial Responsible for the delivery and development
matters and coporate governance
6. Club Development Director
7. Special Projects Director
4. Synchro Director (Scotland)
worked as hard as we possibly could. We both gave DT: I think some people do think they are there
100% and never gave up even if we had bad results,
bad skates or nasty comments. At our first Worlds we
were 13th, and it was the lowest a British couple had
ever come.
Q: Do you keep in touch with Bernard?
DT: It is hard, because Bernard is in Canada, but we
had fun skating together, and the same passion and
drive.
through who I am, but they work hard and enjoy what
they're doing. They are their own people, enjoying the
sport like I did. If they get success then great! But they
don't feel any pressure from many people.
Q: Do you choreograph their programmes and
choose the music each season, and does
choreography come easily to you?
DT: I work the same way my coach used to work. We
If you feel you have the skills, experience and enthusiasm to undertake one of these important
roles, we would be pleased to accept your candidacy. Application forms will be available for
download from the NISA website (www.iceskating.org.uk) from Mon 30th April 2007 and must
be received by the association no later than 2:00pm on Mon 14th May 2007. Your application
and CV must be proposed and seconded by two eligible voting members of Sk8scotland.
Ballot papers will be sent out 25th May 2007, which must be received by 8th June 2007.
Results will be announced at the Sk8scotland AGM on 17th June 2007 on a first-past-the-post
basis within each portfolio.

The 2007 British RJS Synchronized skating
Championships represented a huge
milestone in the development of this fast
growing branch of skating in the UK. With 22
teams representing 12 UK rinks, from
Inverness in the north of Scotland to Gosport
in the Isle of Wight, this was a truly national
event.
It was particularly pleasing to see no fewer
than 6 teams entering the new Elementary
section, previously termed "Beginner", with
this competition being the very first for two
brand new teams to synchro - Ayr-O-Dynamics
from Ayr and the Solway Stars from Dumfries -
both teams only formed within thew last few
months.
Whilst the competition was fierce, the final
presentation ceremony was simply awe
inspiring, with all 22 teams lined up on the ice
in a sea of colour!
Finland take World Junior title at NIC
The National Ice Centre in Nottingham opened its doors to 17 teams representing 12
International Skating Union (ISU) member nations, welcoming this, the newest of figure
skating disciplines to the ISU skating family, to Great Britain for the first time at world
challenge level 8-10 March 2007.
The official draw was opened by the event
director Donna Gately (General Manager -
National Ice Centre), who handed over to the
President and Chairman of the National Ice
Skating Association (NISA) Haig Oundjian, who
during his address welcomed the many foreign
visiting athletes and coaches in their native
tongue.
The opening ceremony scene was set with an
exhibition by the Nottingham Junior category
synchro team - National Ice Centre (NIC)
Silhouettes and the NIC Skating Academy.
This was followed by a parade of the
participating nations. Mich Stevenson OBE DL
HON MA, Chairman of the NIC and Honorary
Freeman of the city, welcomed the ISU Council
members and officials together with all the
athletes, coaches, families and friends to
Nottingham. ISU Council member Marie
Lundmark of Finland thanked Mr. Stevenson, the
NIC and NISA, and declared the Synchronized
Skating World Challenge Cup for Juniors open.
The short programme produced some
breathtaking performances to music of all styles
and rhythms, with 2 renderings of John Lennon's
'Imagine' portrayed by Chicago Jazz from USA
and Les Miracles of Finland, Barbie Girl from
Czech Republic Team - Balance (who might be
described as in the “Pink”), our own Great
Britain team, from Lee Valley - Aura, with Moulin
Rouge Bolero and finally a stunning
interpretation of Shall We Dance/Lunatico from
Fintastic from Finland who were leading after the
Short Programme competition.
There were thrills and spills throughout the
evening with fast and precise intersections at
high speed offering rockers, brackets and
twizzles at the point of intersecting, as well as
one or two falls which in some cases caused
further calamity with skaters bearing down on
each other. Black Rose from Hungary had a
particularly bad time with falls and should be
congratulated on their recovery and maintained
presentation throughout the programme.
A roundup of news from the Home Countries
2007 Welsh Open RJS Free
Champs prove a great success
Figure skaters from around the UK competed for Welsh titles at the Deeside Ice Rink in
North Wales on Sunday 25th March. The Welsh Free Open Championships (RJS), for skaters
from Beginners up to Level 10, included the qualifying competitions for the Welsh NISA Cup
team.
This is the first time that the Welsh standard
championships have been open to all eligible British
skaters, and competitions were also introduced for
adult skaters. The number of entries consequently
increased significantly from previous years, with many
skaters from England and Scotland. Welsh skaters,
however, still fared very well.
The trophy for the Most Promising Skater (awarded
from Beginners to Level 6) went to Rachel Barley,
winner of the Level 5 Ladies competition.
Results
Colour and style graced the ice with new and
innovative choreography and costumes some of
which were startling and effective. In particular
Italy - Hot Shivers - in black dresses with white
hooping, Team Berlin Juniors with their steamline
cat suits, the glitz of New York New York from
Russia, Team Junost, and finally of note the
French Black Diams with their body art roses on
their backs!
Moving on to the Free Programme on Saturday,
Again colour, innovation and style lit the ice at
the National Ice Centre with programmes
including from Team Berlin Juniors a truly
inspiring interpretation of our feathered friends -
birds using The Ultimate music although small
errors in the programme kept them out of the
medals. The Supremes, from Canada, offered a
completely different flavour with a Willie Wonka
Compilation and effective body language to
bring this music alive whilst skating a complex
and extrememly well executed programme
which earned them the silver medal. Chicago
Jazz, from the USA, dazzled the audience again,
this time with their programme music from
Freedom - elements beautifully linked and
precise throughout giving them the Bronze
medal.
Fintastic from Finland held their first place
position, scooping the Gold carrying on the
Scandinavian tradition of excellence in
Synchronized skating with a programme created
around a mixture of music - Aerial/Soundtrack
1/Cirque de Soleil/Soundtrack 1.
The National Ice Centre offered hospitality to
their officials and visitors which will be
remembered by all - a truly professional staff
took the event from start to finish - on time -
and beautifully presented. This world class
venue will see many more world class events
which will bring Nottingham a host of new
visitors to enjoy surrounding attractions is this
part of England steeped in history and legend -
not forgetting obin Hood and Maid Marion who
joined the fun of the week.
British Adults head for France
Chris Pascoe
sends us Adult
News from
France
Something to look forward to in the dark and dismal days of December is the Dune of
Flanders International Ice Skating Competition for Adults. This is always held over the first
or second weekend of December in Dunkerque, France, providing a perfect opportunity
for combining skating competition with a Christmas 'booze cruise'.
It is easy to get to for us Brits, especially using the new
enormous ferries which Norfolk Line has recently
invested in, and which sail direct from Dover to
Dunkerque. Luckily they were big enough to plough
imperceptibly through the mountainous seas which
had been whipped up by a week of violent storms,
including the London tornado. Our only problem, the
strike at Calais which had turned the M20 into one big
lorry park with an equivalent the other side.
Dunkerque ice rink is a stones' throw from those
famous beaches. (Which are miles and miles of
wonderful sand.) The rink has recently undergone a
refurbishment and is also now totally non-smoking.
How nice it was to enjoy a Croque Monsieur and a cup
of hot chocolate in the rink café without being
engulfed in a fug of Gaulouise. It is cold on the ice.
Very cold! Not the place to be waiting for your music
to start in a scant costume. This year we were given
very welcome fleece blankets as entry gifts.
The entry this year was very much lower than usual. On
some previous years there has been as many as 40
British skaters and supporters. This year we welcomed
Sally Sherwood from Aberdeen and Nicholas Milne
from Oxford to the rather depleted British camp.
There are events for Dance, Free Skating, Interpretive
and Improvisation. Age categories are divided into
young Adult, Class I, II, III and IV. There was a good
entry of young adults, who are defined as age 17 to
27. Events are also divided into standard: pre-bronze,
bronze, silver, gold and masters. Competitors came
from the USA, GB, France, Belgium, Luxembourg,
Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland and Russia.
The Dance events were marked using the RJS and the
other events were marked using NJS.
The organisers would be the first to accept that they
know nothing about dance. We did at least get the
Sad News
A happy British contingent at Dunquerque
Dundee hosts Scottish Short Track
Championships 2007
Dundee Ice Arena was the venue once again
for the Scottish Short Track Championships
on 25th March.
This Championship can be summed up in one phrase,
Girl Power! Alison Walker (Ayrshire Flyers) won two
of the three distances to take the Junior title from
Euan Taylor (Flyers) and Murray Cochrane (Dundee).
Elise Christie (Falkirk) also won two of the three
distances to take the Senior title from Craig Miller
(Flyers) and Alan Dobbie (Falkirk). The relay title
went to Falkirk who led from start to finish.
It was heartening to have 12 novices also racing on
the day of the championship, let's hope by next year
they are full members and competing for that junior
title.
Senior Championship 1st - Elise Christie - Falkirk & Stirling; 2nd - Craig
Miller - Ayrshire Flyers; 3rd - Alan Dobie - Falkirk & Stirling; 4th - Scott
Anderson - Dundee
Junior Championship 1st - Alison Walker - Ayrshire Flyers; 2nd - Murray
Cochrane - Dundee; 3rd - Euan Taylor - Ayrshire Flyers
Fitzroy Smith Trophy Awarded to the top skater in Scotland over the
four main competitions. 1st - Craig Miller - Ayrshire Flyers; 2nd - Alan
Dobie - Falkirk & Stirling; 3rd - Scott Anderson - Dundee
Margaret Bothwell died peacefully 4th March aged
56 years. Devoted mother of three skating
daughters, Tiffany, Beverly and Kimberly, Margaret
dedicated her life to her girls' love of ice skating,
on the committee at Sutton, making upteen outfits
for all, lifts to help others to ice rinks to name a few.
A lovely lady to die so young, and sadly missed by
those that did know her. (Denise Parkinson).
Freda Hill News has just reached us of the passing
of Freda Hill in America some 18 months ago, in a
tragic car accident. Waiting for friends to join her for
an adult group skating weekend, she was killed
correct music (mostly), but only one mark was given -
leaving the competitors unable to determine what the
marks meant. A lot became clear when a coach from
Belgium said that 'over here the timing and pattern are
not important. Nice to have but not necessary.' Aha.
It was interesting to see NJS applied to Interpretive
and Improvisation, but actually it worked very well. In
Improvisation you are given 15 minutes to listen to a
piece of hitherto unheard music then you go out and
make up a program to the music, which has to include
3 specified elements. So the judges mark just the
elements and the program components.
RESULTS
Hana and Brian Connor won their Compulsory dance,
Free dance and Interpretive Pairs classes.
Fiona Brown won Solo Dance.
Chris and Alan Pascoe won their Compulsory dance
class.
Nick Milne made the audience sit up with his opening
triple toe loop, and won his masters Free skate.
Sally Sherwood placed in both her solo dance and
Free skate classes.
Chris Pascoe won Improvisation and placed in Free
skate and Interpretive classes.
All in all an impressive medal haul for GB.
On Saturday we went out for a skaters dinner. The
Russian team had brought a traditional salt loaf of
bread to share. They sank copious quantities of spirits,
were out partying until goodness knows and were still
on the ice next morning for early patch. We didn't even
TRY to compete!
Sunday saw concern from those skaters who needed
rail transport to get home. The French railways went
on strike - but the ferry problems had been resolved.
Back row l to r: Murray Cochrane; Alison Walker; Euan Taylor
Front row: Craig Miller; Elise Christie; Alan Dobie
when a speeding car hit her vehicle. Freda and
husband Bobby, were secretary and Chairman of
Nottingham Ice DAnce Club for a number of years,
and were also dance judges in the UK. After Bobby's
death, she married John Hill and moved to the US.
She was an active member of an adult Synchro team
in the US. She will be sadly missed by all who knew
her. (Kay Robinson)
Norman Bradley An ice dancer of 'the old school'
Norman was chairman of Birmingham Ice Dance Club
from the 1940's till the old rink closed in 1956. An
NSA member since 1942, Norman passed his second
NISA official stuff!
Attention all skaters, coaches, judges and officials - this is the page to read to keep
up to date with all the Association's Official Information
For full details also check NISA website www.iceskating.org.uk
Due to lack of space in this issue, we are unable to publish all recent Official and Technical
Announcements. Members are advised to always check the NISA website for full details
As from 1st April 2007 there will be no further
synchronized skating tests in the UK - Approved by the
NISA board 27 March 2007. Criteria for competition
will be based on Field Moves tests and a table of
requirements will be available on the NISA Web Site
Synchro Page by or from Friday 6th April 2007.
This table will be reviewed annually and if there are
any updates they will be made in April of each year.
There will be further announcements re coach and
judge education. Provision will be made for coaches
to arrange for judge feed back on their team/squad
status during the season.
class test in 1945. At the time, this test comprised:
Waltz-in-8 format, Blues, Tango, Rocker and Kilian all
with partner, one of these solo, plus a 2 1 ⁄2 minute
Free Dance. Small wonder that only around 200
skaters had ever passed the test at the time!
Although never achieving podium success in the
British Ice Dance Championships, Norman became a
member of the NSA Dance Committee in in 1945
and was instrumental in organising the first ever
international ice dance competition at Wembley in
1950. Norman was one of the founders of the
Northern Ice Dance League in 1948, and was NSA
NISA Synchro Tests
The new test structure, which was considered, will
serve as an excellent document offering guidelines of
the level of content expected within the different
categories and will be reissued as such.
This change of direction for synchro in the UK offers
coaches and teams an opportunity to focus on their
programmes and skating skills, removing the pressure
of tests on synchro ice, which in all rinks, by all
accounts, is somewhat limited. For squads wishing to
take teams on into higher competition skating skills are
vital.
Important Announcement for all NISA Licenced Coaches
May I respectfully remind you all that your licenses were due for renewal on 1st march 2007. We are aware that
a number of coaches have not submitted their renewal documentation including their log books. It is NISA
policy that only NISA Licenced coaches may enter skaters into NISA/ISU events/competitions. If you have not
applied for your renewal can you as a matter of urgency contact pippa.teague@iceskating.org.uk or send the
documentation into the NISA office again for the attention of Pippa Teague.
IMPORTANT NEWS ABOUT ELIGIBILITY & YEAR END RETURNS - ALL SKATERS SHOULD READ THIS!
Have you lost the option to compete because you
have lost your Eligible status?
All skaters, with their parents and coaches, should
take time to answer the following questions:
Are you a competitive skater who receives or has
received any financial payment or Benefit in Kind
(free ice/lessons/travel/clothing etc) in return for
any of the following activities?
- Coaching
- Assisting coaches
- Performing in shows/galas
- Wearing advertisements (trademarks)
- Other activities
If you answered YES continue with the following
questions:
Have you completed the Annual Financial Eligibility
Report Form (Elig 5) due 28th Feb?
For Team Skate GB members this information is
required for submission to the ISU.
If you coach/assist a coach have you completed the
Annual Eligibility Form for coaches who still
compete (Elig 4) which is due annually with renewal
of coach licence application 1st March.?
If you are a Team Skate GB member have you
completed an ESRA Form (Elig.2) each time you
have participated and/or earned/received Benefit In
Kind from a non-coaching activity since the 1st
January 2007?
If you are NOT a Team Skate GB member have you
completed the Eligibility Participation form (Elig.3)
each time you earned/received benefit In Kind from
any non-coaching activity?
If you answered YES to the previous relevant questions
your Eligible status has been protected and you may
continue to compete until 28th February 2008 when
you should ask yourself the same questions again.
If you answered NO to any of the previous relevant
questions it is possible that you have lost your
Eligible status and may not be able to compete
from 1st March 2007 onwards.
NISA and the ISU are extremely serious about
Eligibility rules ( ISU Rule 102).
It is a skater's own responsibility to protect their
Eligible status at all times and therefore it is essential
that each skater, with parent and coach, fully
understands the NISA Eligibility rules.
These can be found with the application forms on the
NISA website as Elig.1 "A Simplified Guide To
Eligibility"
Have you lost Eligible Status by competing abroad ?
Skaters should also be aware that competing abroad
without applying to register the request with NISA and
subsequently obtaining permission causes skaters to
lose their Eligible status (ISU Rule 102).
This applies to all events outside the UK.e.g. Inter-club
and other country competitions/ Championships and
to all disciplines and age groups.
Future applications should be made to
julia.mcmurray@iceskating.org.uk
What to do next
Any skater who has not submitted financial returns
should do so without delay.
Any skater who has not adhered to all other NISA
Eligibility rules and is therefore concerned about their
current status should contact
My report this year covers
only the period from 1st
March to 30th September
2006. As you will recall from my
last report, our funding from UK
Sport has changed dramatically
and these periods now commence
from September in each year. The
Board have decided that our
reporting should also follow suit
and we have changed the year
end from Feb to Sept 30th.
Subsequently, this report covers
only the 6 months from 1st March
to 30th September 2006.
With regards our financial welfare, you
will note that the balance sheet value of
the Association has reduced less than
the trading loss over this period due to a
revaluation of the Association trophies
and the John Curry statue.
However, during this 6 month trading
period, the Association traded at a loss
of £22,227, which includes an initial
£15,000 investment in the new website.
Although this is the first loss I am
reporting since my original election as
Chairman some 8 years ago, it is
important to remember that this is only a
short financial period and it does not
include the more active months for the
Association.
In my previous Chairman's Report, I did
point out that the dramatic change in
funding from UK Sport will have a
definite impact on the performance of the
Association, and we must now be
prepared to face more difficult trading
challenges in the future. One must
remember that in the past we have
received in excess of £140,000 per
annum in Exchequer Funding for the
delivery programmes for our sport
throughout the United Kingdom. Last
year we were given notice that this would
change, and as a result, the sport now
receives new funding for the World Class
Performance in Figure Skating and has
maintained funding for the World Class
Speed Skating programme.
The Figure Skating programme is new to
our sport, but these funds are dedicated
to athletes and athlete performance
programmes only.
This now places the Association in a
position where its income is primarily
derived from membership, tests and
competitions. There is therefore a very
strong emphasis now on our commercial
activities in order to try to maintain our
delivery and development programmes
without incurring losses.
In the April elections, we welcomed new
members to the Board - Karen Archer in
the Performance Portfolio, Maggie
Worsfold for Technical and Judy Clinton
as the Synchronized nominee for the
Board. We are also pleased to welcome
back all the other members of the Board,
together with Mr Ken Pendrey as the
nominee for Short Track Speed Skating.
During this 6-month period, we witnessed
the World Figure Skating Championship
in Calgary, Canada, with Sinead & John
Kerr, following a superb 10th slot in the
2006 Olympics, narrowly missing a top
10 position overall in Calgary.
Nevertheless they secured a well
deserved 9th place in the Free Dance.
Our Pair team of Stacey Kemp and David
King performed extremely well in their
first Worlds, and claimed 17th place,
while British Mens Champion John
Hamer unfortunately missed the cut for
the Free Programme. Due to injuries,
there was no entry in the Ladies' event.
During this period, we also recorded
some encouraging international results
including the Kerr's first international
gold medal at Oberstdorf in September.
On the domestic Short Track front, the
British Speed Skating Championships
took place in April 2006 with Paul Worth
snatching the Mens Senior title from Jon
Eley, (Jon recently returned from his
magnificent Olympic 5th place), while
Sarah Lindsay retained her Senior title,
and she too was still celebrating an 8th
place Olympic finish.
During the summer our Short Track
Squad were completing their pre-season
training in preparation for the World Cup
events, and I am please to say that their
efforts certainly paid off, with GB skaters
Jon Eley, Tom Iveson, Paul Stanley and
Oliver Horsepool snatching a clean
sweep of 1st to 4th places in the opening
competition of the season in Chamonix
during August.
By the time you read this, as you will
know, since the events have already
taken place, NISA was awarded hosting
of the ISU European Short Track
Championships in Sheffield in January
2007 as well as the ISU Junior World
Synchronized Skating Challenge Cup in
March at the National Ice Centre in
Nottingham. Our thanks to Sheffield
International Venues and Short Track
Organising Committee, and the NIC for
their help and co-operation to secure
these events.
Also during the summer and autumn of
2006, we continued to host the
International Judging System events in
Sheffield, Dumfries and Deeside.
I would like to once again express my
considerable appreciation to all the
volunteer members of our sport. This
includes my colleagues on the Board of
Directors, the Technical Committees, all
the judges who adjudicate our test
system and competitions and of course
all the inumerable number of club
volunteers and members.
Central to the development of our sport
is our coaching structure and of course
all our dedicated coaches. During this
period, we launched the new NISA
licence for coaching which is part of a
programme to maintain the development
of the standards of coaching throughout
the United Kingdom.
My thanks to Keith Horton and his staff
at NISA who contuinue to provide with
diligence, all the wide services to our
membership. I also take this opportunity
of congratulating Cath Barker on her
appointment as the Director of
Performance for Figure Skating and
Nicky Gooch as National Coach for Short
Track.
And, in closing, I would like to extend my
appreciation to Bryan Morrice and all
those who assist him in delivering the
excellent Ice Link for the 13th year in a
row!!
The Financial
Pages
Report of the Directors of the National Ice Skating Association of the UK Limited
The directors present their report with the
financial statements of the company for the
period 1 March 2006 to 30 September
2006.
Principal Activity
The principal activity of the company in the
period under review was that of the
promotion and advancement of ice skating
within the UK.
Directors' Responsibilities
The directors are responsible for preparing
the financial statements in accordance with
applicable law and regulations. Company
law requires the directors to prepare
financial statements for each financial year.
Under that law the directors have elected
to prepare the financial statements in
accordance with United Kingdom Generally
Accepted Accounting Practice (United
Kingdom Accounting Standards and
applicable law). The financial statements
are required by law to give a true and fair
view of the state of affairs of the company
and of the profit or loss of the company for
that period. In preparing those financial
statements the directors are required to:
- select suitable accounting policies and
apply them consistently;
- make judgements and estimates that
are reasonable and prudent;
- prepare the financial statements on the
going concern basis unless it is
inappropriate to presume that the
company will continue in business.
The directors are responsible for keeping
proper accounting records which disclose
with reasonable accuracy at any time the
financial position of the company and to
enable them to ensure that the financial
statements comply with the Companies Act
1985. They are also responsible for
safeguarding the assets of the company
and hence for taking reasonable steps for
the prevention and detection of fraud and
other irregularities.
Disclosure of Information
So far as the directors are aware, there is
no relevant audit information (as defined by
Section 234ZA of Companies Act 1985) of
which the company's auditors are unaware,
and each Director has taken all steps that
he/she ought to have taken as a director in
order to make him/herself aware of any
relevant audit informatiion and to establish
that the company's auditors are aware of
that information.
Auditors
The auditors, Greenhalgh & Co, will be
proposed for re-appointment in accordance
with Section 385 of the Companies Act
1985. This report has been prepared in
accordance with the special provisions of
Part VII of the Companies Act 1985 relating
to small companies.
ON BEHALF OF THE BOARD:
K Horton - Secretary 17 April 2007
Report of the Independent Auditors to the Members of National Ice Skating
Association of the UK Limited
We have audited the financial statements
of National Ice Skating Association of UK
Limited for the period ended 30 September
2006 on pages 6 to 16*. These financial
statements have been prepared in
accordance with the accounting policies
set out therein and the requirements of the
Financial Reporting Standard for Smaller
Entities (effective January 2005).
(* page numbers refer to original Financial
Statements not the pages in this supplement)
This report is made solely to the
company's members, as a body, in
accordance with Section 235 of the
Companies Act 1985. Our audit work has
been undertaken so that we might state to
the company's members those matters we
are required to state to them in an auditors'
report and for no other purpose. To the
fullest extent permitted by law, we do not
accept or assume responsibility to anyone
other than the company and the
company's members as a body, for our
audit work, for this report, or for the
opinions we have formed.
Respective Responsibilities of
Directors and Auditors
The directors' responsibilities for preparing
the financial statements in accordance with
applicable law and United Kingdom
Accounting Standards (United Kingdom
Generally Accepted Accounting Practice)
are set out on page two*. Our responsibility
is to audit the financial statements in
accordance with relevant legal and
regulatory requirements and International
Standards on Auditing (UK and Ireland).
We report to you our opinion as to whether
the financial statements give a true and fair
view and are properly prepared in
accordance with the Companies Act 1985.
We also report to you whether in our
opinion the information given in the Report
of the Directors is consistent with the
financial statements. In addition, we report
to you if, in our opinion, the company has
not kept proper accounting records, if we
have not received all the information and
explanations we require for our audit, or if
information specified by law regarding
directors' remuneration and other
transactions is not disclosed. We read the
Report of the Directors and consider the
implications for our report if we become
aware of any apparent misstatements
within it.
Basis of audit opinion
We conducted our audit in accordance with
International Standards on Auditing (UK
and Ireland) issued by the Auditing
Practices Board. An audit includes
examination, on a test basis, of evidence
relevant to the amounts and disclosures in
the financial statements. It also includes an
assessment of the significant estimates
and judgements made by the directors in
the preparation of the financial statements,
and of whether the accounting policies are
appropriate to the company's
circumstances, consistently applied and
adequately disclosed. We planned and
performed our audit so as to obtain all the
information and explanations which we
considered necessary in order to provide
us with sufficient evidence to give
reasonable assurance that the financial
statements are free from material
misstatement, whether caused by fraud or
other irregularity or error. In forming our
opinion we also evaluated the overall
adequacy of the presentation of
information in the financial statements.
Opinion
In our opinion the financial statements give
a true and fair view in accordance with UK
Generally Accepted Accounting Practice
applicable to smaller entities, of the state
of the company's affairs as at 30 Sept
2006 and of its loss for the period then
ended:
- the financial statements have been
properly prepared in accordance with
the Companies Act 1985; and
- the information given in the Report of
the Directors is consistent with the
financial statements.
General Rules of the Association
1. Eligibility
(a) The rules for Eligibility were adopted by the International Skating Union
(hereinafter 'ISU') at its Congress in June 1992, and came into effect
immediately thereafter. The rules are binding upon all member nations.
Therefore the Association agrees to automatically adopt any changes
made to the Eligibility rules by the ISU Congress at any future date and
to update its Articles and General Rules accordingly. Where the rules
laid out in paragraphs 1 (b) to 4 (c) differ from the current ISU rules, then
the ISU rules will take precedence.
(b) It is the responsibility of each member nation to establish the basis,
including any financial arrangement, in which its skaters are permitted to
participate in skating events. The Eligibility rules are based upon the
principle that a person should not be placed at a disadvantage by
reason of his or her preparation for participation in such events.
(c) Within the United Kingdom the responsibility for establishing the basis
for Eligibility rests with the Association. The Association shall determine
Regulations for Eligibility, and shall administer these as it thinks fit. Any
decision of the Association shall be final and binding.
have applied to the relevant Departmental Committee before entering
any direct or indirect financial arrangements, submitting a signed copy
of the detailed Eligibility regulations application form (available from
NISA) which has duly been approved by the relevant Departmental
Committee.
(iii) Is a person who having been approved by the relevant Departmental
Committee to retain their eligible status, then breaches any condition of
furnish an explanation shall be waived.
