UNITED WAY COMMUNITY REPORT 2011
Message from the President & CEO
Pam Went and I are pleased to have this opportunity to
thank the community for all its support, and to reflect
on the accomplishments of the United Way in 2011. This
is National Volunteer Week, and we would like to start
by thanking you, the many volunteers of the United
Way: our Board members, our Campaign team, our
Committee volunteers, and the hundreds of others who
lent a hand throughout the year. You and our generous
donors have enabled the United Way to continue to be a
vital and relevant organization providing resources and
funding throughout the County.
As leaders of the United Way, we are both proud of the
work that this organization does. Our Annual Report
To create a lasting positive
impact in Northumberland
County through leadership
and partnerships that
mobilize resources in
response to human and
social priorities.
OShoot Photo by Peggy McCarthy
provides a detailed and thorough overview of the past
year highlighting our funded agencies, our grants, the
programs and services we are involved in, and our
annual campaign. Our Board and staff are committed to
being accountable and transparent to the community.
Enclosed you will find a pie chart that provides a
detailed breakdown of how donor dollars and grants are
invested. Our year-end financial statements are posted
on our new website www.northumberlandunitedway.
ca and can also be requested from our office. Next
to the government, United Way continues to be the
largest private funder of health and social services in
the county.
This past year, United Ways across Canada launched a
new branding including a new tagline: Change starts
here. As the saying goes, the only constant in life is
change; and as an organization, we must be responsive
to the changing needs in our community. To enable us
to do so this last year, the Board of Directors focused on
the development of a new Strategic Plan. We reviewed
our mission, vision, and values and revised them to
reflect who we are today and clearly state our direction
for the future. This plan will guide us over the next
three years, starting with a review our internal capacity
and gathering the support of the community and our
stakeholders for the direction we believe we must
pursue. Most importantly, it frames the work that we
must do to become a “community impact” organization,
where the funds that we distribute are focused on
community priorities and have a positive impact.
We are thrilled to be recipients of a province-wide
Ontario Trillium Foundation grant and be the lead on this
initiative. It will move the “community impact” process
forward for, not only ourselves, but also the United Ways
in Leeds Grenville, Oxford County, and Sault Ste. Marie.
You will hear more on this initiative in the future.
Within Northumberland, there is a tremendous network
of organizations that partner together to meet the needs
of the residents of this vast county. We are pleased that
the United Way, along with our funded agencies, is an
active participant in this collaborative network which
addresses important issues such as children services,
poverty reduction, transportation, and more.
Our funding and charitable partners in this work
include: Northumberland County, (Food 4 All & Back
Packs for Kids), The Ontario Trillium Foundation, the
Government of Canada (Greenwood Coalition) and the
Province of Ontario (211). We gratefully acknowledge
their support.
In closing, we thank you and our donors for your trust and
support of the United Way. Together we build communities
and create opportunities for better lives for the residents
of Northumberland County. Change starts here!
Our Mission Our Values Our Vision
• We operate with transparency and
accountability
• We encourage and promote volunteerism and
volunteer leadership
• We recognize that our donors, our volunteers
and our staff are essential to our success
• We support innovation
• We practice inclusion
• We embrace the power of community partnerships
We are an organization that benefits the lives
of individuals and families in Northumberland
County. To achieve this:
• We focus on key communities priorities
• We support the programs that create a
positive impact
• We partner to make our community stronger
• We honour the values of all of our donors
and volunteers
Greenwood Coalition Report
To Northumberland United Way AGM
Greenwood Coalition has been experiencing some very positive signs that indicate
volunteer-based outreach approach is changing the lives of people living in poverty
in our community. We owe a great deal of gratitude to Northumberland United
Way for providing administrative backup for us, as well as support in seeking and
administering funding grants. This relationship has freed us to spend more of our
time interacting with the people we serve. We thank the Ontario Trillium Foundation
and Government of Canada for funding this year.
• Dial 211
• A free public information service connecting people
to community, social, health, and government services
• 211 is available 24/7, confidential and multilingual
• 1490 calls to 211 in 2011
YMCA: “The TEAM program was there when I
needed it the most. After having my daughter,
I then knew I needed to really focus on making
a better life for both of us. Luckily, the TEAM
program was created and I enrolled. Being able
to take my daughter to school each day, get my
credits, meet others in the same situation as myself,
as well as the support of the staff and fellow
students , was truly a life changing experience.
Because of TEAM, I graduated both high school
and college and got a job in my field. My life is now
going great and I have a bright future, all because I
took the first step and enrolled in TEAM.”
~ Amanda L, participant in TEAM
(Teaching, Educating and Mothering)
With this kind of support we have been able to provide weekly meals to 60 people per
week, creative arts workshops and exhibitions, income support assistance, a dozen
sets of dentures, regular, consistent healthcare through the Port Hope Community
Health Centre, fresh-baked bread distribution, assistance with income tax returns
for 30 people, access to mental health counseling, sharing of clothing and furniture,
as well as a beautiful community garden.
Recently a member of the Greenwood Tower motel community gave me a letter in
which she had written about the contribution of GWC in her life, and her words
suggest that we are accomplishing our goals of seeing positive change in the lives of
people who struggle.
“They accepted me for me, not what I was or what they wanted me to be. I am now a full
person instead of an empty shell. They helped me a lot and now it’s time for me to help others
in any way I can.”
• The essential supplies are supported by a large group of community partners including,
The Help Centre: “Faced with our family being
in financial crisis due to reduced employment,
I was unsure where to turn for help. Our bills
were piling up and we needed oil to heat our
home and ensure that our home insurance was
not compromised. A friend suggested the Help
Centre where I was warmly welcomed and not
judged for my predicament. They helped me
with a budget and arranged for payment for the
oil. They also suggested that I consider getting
a Christmas hamper for the holiday season to
allow me to focus my limited income on expenses
and arrears. The Help Centre made things much
easier for our family.”
~ Susan S, a grateful Help Centre client
• Their generous support has enabled the United Way to provide back packs full of supplies for
distribution to both elementary and high school students throughout Northumberland County.
Volunteer Fair – October 22, 2011
Bary Witteveen, Info Northumberland beside, his booth at the Volunteer Fair on Saturday, October 22
at the Cobourg Community Centre. There were 47 agencies at the fair showcasing their information
and emphasizing the need for volunteers. In Northumberland, there are currently 95 organizations
looking for volunteers with 191 volunteer opportunities, for a total of 2,437 volunteers needed to fill
these positions.
The Volunteer Fair offered local agencies the platform to showcase opportunities for volunteerism
in the Northumberland area. Booths were set up to educate people on volunteerism and the
wide variety of opportunities available in the community. Northumberland United Way and Info
Northumberland provided support to this initiative.
St. John Ambulance : In 2011, the St. John
Ambulance Therapy Dogs were requested by
a Northumberland County public school to
conduct regular visits to a special education class.
Among the students was a young boy who was
experiencing emotional difficulties. Most recently,
he had been petting a neighbour’s dog, but
became upset and hit the animal when he was told
that it was time for him to go home. After many
visits by the Therapy Dog team over the months,
this child showed a marked improvement in his
emotional behaviour. While he did experience a
number of outbursts, the boy began to recognize
his emotional state and deal with his emotions
effectively in order to participate in the dog’s visits.
The teacher reported that the therapy dog became
the motivation the little boy needed to make a
significant advance in his social development.
United Way Community Report 2011 • Thursday, April 19, 2012 - 9
UNITED WAY COMMUNITY REPORT 2011
Message from the Campaign Chair
This past year has been an amazing adventure for me. As
the 2011 Campaign Chair for Northumberland United Way,
I have tried and been involved in many new and exciting
things. My year was filled with activities like curling, dragon
boating, Cougars games and a golf tournament. I stuffed
backpacks, sampled stews and soups, toured local agencies
and a food warehouse. I now have a much broader and deeper
understanding about the community in which I live.
My job involved going to businesses and industries to discuss
in-house campaigns, touring Day of Caring sites, weekly
on-air meetings with the crew at the local radio station,
attending photo opportunities, contributing to the United
Way Newsletter and much, much more. I enjoyed every single
minute of it.
I have had the pleasure of witnessing young and old alike
coming together to support the cause in which they believe.
I have seen the power of volunteerism and how incredibly
important it is in a community. Believe me when I say
that Northumberland is filled with active and committed
volunteers whose contributions are enormous.
As far as financial donations go, Northumberland County
residents must have set the standards of compassion and
generosity this year as they dug deep into their pockets to help
out their neighbours, friends, co-workers and total strangers. I
was astounded at the breadth of ways that people can give to
their United Way. And I am most grateful as well.
On behalf of all those who will benefit from the dollars raised
during the campaign, I would like to thank you. Although
my time as Campaign Chair has come to an end, I still plan
to maintain my association with Northumberland United
Way. In fact, I see it becoming even stronger than before.
Thank you Northumberland for continuing to care, and as
the scope of United Way continues to grow and develop
to best suit the needs of our communities, I know that you
will be there during every campaign to support this very
worthwhile organization.
Leading the Way Circle – Individuals
Northumberland United Way would like to recognize our Leading the Way Circle donors. These individuals and businesses are leading the way for change in our community
by making an annual donation of $1,000 or more. Change really does start here.
