LUXURY SAFARI CAMP, MASAI MARA
The life on the plains of Masai Mara is extremely diverse, with everything
from elephants to butterflies vying for our attention. Being in
the vehicle allows us to get closer to the big game without disturbing
them, providing great photographic opportunities of the big cats and
other mega-fauna. However, the deepest experience one can have
with the Mara is to feel, smell, and hear it. Our experienced Maasai
guides have grown up in this area, know it like the back of their hands,
and are itching to show you their world as they’ve always known it – on
foot. They’ll show you the smaller life that keeps the savannah ticking
over – the insects, the birds, the tracks, and of course, the dung – as
well as some of the bigger mammals, from a different perspective. It’s
also a great opportunity to stretch your legs and get some exercise!
What to expect:
The walk usually leaves the camp at about 7am or 4pm, taking you out
across the plain behind camp for approximately 45 minutes. Your guide
and spotter will be happy to share their culture with you as you walk,
explaining the medicinal or cultural significance of certain plants.
They’ll interpret the tracks and signs you encounter along the way and
show you the wonderful birdlife. At the end of the walk, there will be a
vehicle waiting for you to continue with a game-drive or other activity.
Longer walks can be arranged, but prior notice is required.
What to bring:
Walking shoes, hat, sun-cream, drinking water, binoculars, and a small
camera. White clothes are not very appropriate for bush walks.
You can put your big camera in the vehicle, which will meet you at the end of your walk.
-Feel free to ask your guide questions, but keep your voices down.
Safety:
Your guide, spotter, and guard will all be carrying spears with them at all times. A vehicle will also have driven
ahead of you beforehand to ensure the area is clear of dangerous game. Your guide is trained in wilderness first
aid, and carries a first-aid kit with him on the walk. Your guide will also have a phone and a radio with him, and
an emergency air evacuation can be arranged immediately if necessary.
Please sign the appropriate indemnity/waiver form before you depart on your walk.
