ADITYA HRIDAYAM

Tato yuddha parisraantham Samrae chinthayaa sthitam |
Raavanham cha agrato drustvaa Yuddhaaya samupasthitam ||
Thus, at the fag end of the battle,
Sri Rama, stable and thinking of
the victorious strategies , on
seeing Raavana, the Vice in front
of HIM, equipiosed, yet
preparing for the final onslaught.

Daivathais'cha sama-(a)gamya Drastum abhyaagato ranham |
Upaagamyaa braveed Raamam Agasthyo bhagavaan rrishihi ||
Along with the multitude of
Godly men, who arrived on their
own, to witness the victory of
virtue over vice, the divinely
and brilliant sage, Agasthya
approached Sri Raama and
infused the following.

Raama Raama mahaa baaho Srunhu guhyam sanaatanam|
Yaena sarvaan-areen, vatsa Samarae vijayishyasi ||
O! handsome and mighty armed
Raama, please listen to the
profound and time -honoured
prayer. O! Son, by the power of
this, all your challenges will be
won over, in the battle of life.

Aaditya Hridayam punhyam, Sarwa sathru vinaasanam |
Jaya-(a)vaham japae-nithyam Akshayyam Paramam Sivam ||
The 'Aditya Hridayam' (essence
of SUN) is sacred, it completely
eliminates all your foes (the six
internal foes). It is immutable,
supreme and blissful. Also, it
ensures victory in all walks. So,
It is essential, you ever meditate
upon this.

Sarva mangalha maangalhyam Sarva paapa praNaasanam |
Chintaa-soka prasamanam Aayur-vardhanam uttamam ||
Prosperous than all prosperity,
it eradicates all infamy and sin,
rids one of mental and physical
illnesses, increases the life
span, and is the most excellent.

Rashmi-mantam Sam(a)-udyantam Deva-asura namaskritam |
Poojaya swa vivaswantam Bhaaskaram bhuvanaeswaram ||
O! SUPREME PARAMAATMAN, Thou art
the head of the cosmic systems, an equal
promoter of all activities. Being formless,
and the source of Supreme Knowledge,
mortal and immortal beings alike,
surrender to Thee. O! lord of all worlds, we
ever, meditate upon Thee.
O! Lord, Surya Bhagavaan, You are endowed
with perfect circular rising and very
brilliant are your rays. Men of virtue and of
vice alike, bow to you. You, the shadowless,
being the source of illumination, the
lord of this world, are to be worshiped ever.

Sarvadeva-athmako(h)-yaesha Tejaswee rasmi bhaavanah |
Yaesha deva-asura ganhaan Lokaan paati gabhasthibhi ||
All divinity is personified in Thy SELF.
All power and vigour, Thou art. Thy
KNOWLEDGE is the essence of any
perception, and that alone protects,
people of all walks of life, always.
You are conceived in all that is divine,
Being effulgent, your light is essential
for all perception. You protect both
the good and the sinful in the world,
by your dynamic radiance.

Yaesha Brahmaa cha, Vishnu-scha Siva, Skandah, Prajaapathihi |
Mahendrah, Dhanadah, Kaalo, Yamas'somoh, Apaam pathihi ||
Men may worship with different faiths,
invoking different presiding deities of
their chosen path. Yet, the secret is, only
in YOU all of them are represented.
Therefore, YOU art the supreme SELF.
You are symbolic of any of the many
divine forms of worship such as the
Brahma, Vishnu, Siva, Kumara, Prajapathi,
Indra, Kubera, Time, Timekeeper
and also Water.

Pitharo Vasavah Saadhyoh Aswinau Marutho Manuhu |
Vaayurh Vahnih prajaa praanha Rruthukarthaa prabhaa karah ||
The host of evolved and the heavenly
beings are represented in YOU
because YOU are the all pervasive
sarva vyapaka. You are the spark of
life within all matter. You are the
immutable Knowledge.
The fore-fathers, Vasus, Saadhyas,
Aswini devatas, Maruth ganas, Manu,
Vaayu and Fire are heavenly beings
and you are symbolic of them too.
You are the cause of light. Hence, you
are the principle of life.

Aadityah savithaa sooryah Khagah pooshaa Gabhasthimaan |
Suvarna sadruso bhaanuhu Hiranya raetha diwaakarah ||
O ! The Spirit within the matter, you
manifest, through matter, all actions.
O! Creator and sustainer of life,
enveloping the space, enthralling in
colour, Thou art the Absolute and the
Gold Standard.
O! The son of Aditi, promoter of life,
patronizer of all actions, You are sky
bound but feed the world.Your
dynamic brilliance is of golden hue,
O! donor of golden light, you are the
cause of every day.

Haridh asvah, sahasra'archi Sapta saptir mareechi maan |
Thimiroan madhanah Sambhu stwastaa maarthaanda amsumaan ||
Symbolic of prosperity, worshiped by
multitudes, You, the inner core of the
Sun, shattering Ignorance, are the
eternal bliss personified. You
discriminate not any name or form.
You are the creator after dissolution.
Riding on a green horse, with multitude
of rays, your chariot being drawn by
seven horses, You provide happiness,
drive away darkness, wipe out name and
form and also regenerate all.

Hiranya-garbhah Sisirah tapano Bhaaskaro, Ravihi |
Agni garbho, Aditae putrah Sankhah, sisira naasanah ||
All the invaluable nature is thy
embodiment. O! the alleviator of misery,
you are knowledge personified, knowable
by means of Vedas. Eternal Brilliance is
Thyne, the saviour of Indra, Thy warm
embrace melts the false perceptions.
This pleasant and illuminated universe
is yours.You are the Illuminator of the
Moon, you are the source of light,
admired in Vedas. Brilliant is your core,
O! Son of Aditi, Thy warmth soothes in
the winter.

Vyomanatha'(s)tamobhaedee Rrig-yajus(h)-sama paaragah |
Ghana vristir apaam mithro Vindhya veedhi plavangamah ||
YOU, pervader of infinite, thy grace
dispels ignorance, YOU are comprehensible
by the highest erudition of
Vedas. The torrent of thy grace is the
elixir of life. With Thee, we tread the
formidable orbits.
You are the chieftain of the azure,
disperser of gloom, the singsong of
the three Vedas, the determinant of
torrent & companion of ‘aqua pura’.
Fast, You march in the firmament.

Aatapee mandalee mrutyuhu Pingalhah sarva taapanah |
Kavir-viswo, mahaa taejaa, Raktah sarva bhavo-dhbhavah ||
The great luminary, perfect You are,
the cause of dissolution. Thy mercy
parches all misery. The universally
Knowable, of splendour, with love to
devotees, You are the determinant and
prime mover of all.
Apollo you are, and annular. You are
the cause of decay, of delightful colour,
the scorcher of all matter.The author of
the universe, of grand luminescence &
rubor, You are the cause of all effects.

Nakshtra-graha-taaraanhaam Adhipo, viswa-bhaavanah |
Taejasaam-api-taejaswee Dwaadasa-atman namostute ||
O! sovereign Almighty, supreme
is your celestial constellation,
the vital spirit of all beings, the
splendour of the splendid, You
are the core of the 12 Suns. My
obeisance to Thee.
The commander of the zodiac,
the sustainer of creation, You
are the light of the lights and
you, one of the 12 Aadityas,
I bow to Thee.

Jyothir ganhaanaam pathaye Dinaadhi-pathayae namah ||
To thee, who is in front of me, behind
me, beyond and every where, is due
my reverence. The fountain-head of
wisdom, my veneration to thee. O!
the power-head of liveliness, my
homage to Thee !
O! chief of the luminosities and
master of the eastern range, I bow
to you. O! the head of all daily
activity and master of the western
range, I bow to you.

Jayaaya, jayabhadraaya Harya'swaaya namo namah |
Namo namah sahasraamso Aadityaaya namo namah ||
Thy grace alone, endows us with
conquest and safety. Ever Green are
the paths treaded by Thee, I adore.
Multitude are Thy components, I
venerate Thee. Thou art the nucleus of
the Sun, once more my deference.
O! Bestower of victory, triumph and
security, Green are your horses. I bow
to you. Manifold are your plentiful
rays, I bow to you, O! Aaditya, my
many adorations to you.

Nama ugraaya veeraya, Saarangaaya namo namah |
Namah padma prabhodhaaya Maarthandaaya namo namah ||
Ardent but inspiring Thou art, I adore
thee. Om is Thy form, I revere thee once
more. Thou instill the confidence in to
the hearts, I venerate. O! recreator of all,
countless are my adorations to Thee!
O! terrible and brave, I bow to you.
Fast, is your movement, my salutations
again & again. O! lover of the lotus, I
bow to you. O! regenerator of the
world, many a time I bow to you.

Brahm-aesaana-atchuta-esaaya Surya-aditya varchasae |
Bhaaswatae sarva-bhakshaaya Roudraaya vapushe namah ||
Thou art the creator, sustainer
and terminator. Brilliant and
resplendent, Thou art, over -
whelming all. Ferocious is thy
cosmic forme, I worship thee.
You are symbolic of the holy
trinity. Radiance is your repute.
Your fluorescence engulfs all
over. You are of intense
disposition, I bow to thee.

Tamo-aghnaaya hima-ghnaaya Sathru-ghnaaya amita-atmanae
Krithaghna-ghnaaya devaaya Jyothishaam pathayae namah ||
O! 'the cure all’ for Ignorance and
algidity, O! annihilator of the terminal
enemies by thy iridescence, O! God,
thou art the antidote for infamy. O!
the fountain-head of all brilliance, I
dedicate to Thee.
O! dissipater of darkness and frigidity,
Your Self-luminescence annuls antagonism.
O! Lord, eliminator of the
ungrateful, You are the head of the
luminaries, I bow to thee.

Tapta chaamee-kara-abhaaya Vahnayae viswakarmanhae
Nama-(s)thamo-abhi nighnaaya Ruchayae loka saakshinhae ||
O! Thou art the 'Gold standard'
for all ! The basis of all creation -
thy form so scintillating, To thee, I
pray. O! the healer of Nescience
and stupidity, vivid and rich, thou
art, of impartial nature to all.
Akin to molten gold is your brilliant
light. Fire is, but thy form - You are
the cause of the world, I revere you,
O! the dismisser of gloom.
Colourful you are, the witness of all
action.

Naasayat yaeshavai bhootam Tadaeva srujati prabhuhu
Paayat yaesha, tapat yaesha Varshat yaesha gabhasthibhi ||
O! annihilator of the creation, and
also the creator of the created !
The eternal fulfillment of all mortal
needs is verily through thy
radiance and mercy.
You are the cause of decay and
dissolution also. You are the cause
of new life. You distill the waters
for us by your very heat and give
us forth rains - by all your photoenergy.

Yaeva suptaeshu jaagarti Bhootaeshu pari nishtitaha |
Yaesha chaiva agnihotram-cha Phalam chaivaa agnihotrinaam ||
Thou art the 'Consciousness within'
the slumber of ignorance, invading
the spirit of all beings. Verily, thou art,
the absolute purity, the fruition of the
purity and the spirit of such purity.
While every one is asleep, you are
vigilant, seated in side this world of
beings. You are verily, the purity of
fire, the fruit of all offerings to fire
and the offerer too!

Vedas-cha kratava-scha-yaeva Kratoonaam phalam-yaeva-cha
Yaani krityaani lokaeshu Sarva yaesha ravihi prabhuhu ||
Thou art the Knowledge Absolute and
Actions Absolute. Attaining thy abode
is the Absolute Achievement, what so
ever way one contemplates on Thee.
O! Almighty, Thou art the Grandeur of
What NOT
You are symbolic of scriptures &
rituals and the consequence of such
rituals, undertaken by the world. O!
Lord, YOU are the GLOW of what so
ever !

Yaenam-aapatsu krichchryaeshu Kaantaaraeshu bhayaeshu-cha
Keertayan purushah kaschin Na vaseedati, Raaghava ||
O! Raaghava, who so ever
chants this hymn at times of
deep peril, jeopardy,
adversity and panic or when
entangled in the web of
misery, grieves not, but
overcomes them with ease.

Poojayasyaenam yaekaagro Deva daevam jagat patim
Yaetat trigunhitam japtwaa Yudhdhaeshu vijayishyasi ||
One who worships, thus, with
single pointed devotion, The
God of the Gods, the
benefactor of this macrocosm,
may he be meditated upon
thrice with dedication, will, for
sure, be triumphant in all
endeavours of life.

Asmin kshanhae mahaa baaho Raavanam tvam vadhishyasi
Yaevam-uktwaa tada Agastyo Jagaama cha yathaagatam ||
O! all powerful Raama ! in this
very instant You, by this SELF
realization will bring down the
Raavana, the vice.
Thus concluding, the great
sage, Agastya walked on his
way.

Yaetachchrutwaa mahaa teja Nasta-soko-bhavat tadaa
Dhaarayamaasa supreeto Raaghavah prayata-atmavaan ||
On realizing this message, the
illustrious Raaghava, leaving
behind his brainstorm, pledged
himself gladly to meditate upon
the SUPREME with rapturous
delight.

Whence forth, Sri Rama, observing
all rituals of a sacred prayer, with
sanctified mind and thought,
thrice meditated upon the
SUPREME power and possessed
his bow with valour and
determination.

Raavanam praekshya hristaatmaa Yudhdhaaya samupaagatam
Sarva yatnaena mahataa vadhae tasya dhruto bhavat ||
With elevated spirits and elated
mind, Sri Raama beheld Raavana
and moved closer to him, with
firm decision to annihilate him,
the wicked by his imposing power
and complete effort.

Adha ravir-vadanan-nireekshya Raamam,
mudita manaah paramam Prahrishyamaanhah,
nisacharapati Sam-kshayam viditwaa,
Suraganha Madhyagato vachas-tvareti ||
Thereupon, The SUN God appeared
before Raama, with very pleasant and
supreme composure, being very
elated at the prospective victory of
Virtue, he announced, from among the
group of celestials, that the moment to
vanquish the Demon is imminent.
