People Who Make a Difference
One volunteer can make a difference at the Sacramento SPCA.
But what a change more than 1,600 volunteers can make!
“Princess” arrived at our doors severely matted, filthy and scared.
The tiny poodle mix had received little or no attention for months, and
the prospects for a new home were bleak. We contacted All Over Rover,
a mobile grooming business that often grooms SPCA animals, and
asked if they could help. We called our friends at CW 31 and asked them
if they would cover an on-camera makeover for Princess. Soon after, this
little “diamond in the ruff” had a new look and new beginning.
Our cover this month features Kitty O’Neal, KFBK radio anchor and
SPCA volunteer for more than 20 years. Geoff Petrie, General Manager
of the Kings, and Anne-Marie Petrie, CBS Radio, produced public service
announcements encouraging spay/neuter and adoption of shelter
animals. And we can always count on the entire CW 31 and Channel 13
crew to be ready to help at the annual Reigning Cats and Dogs Gala or
Doggy Dash.
The SPCA has more than 1,600 volunteers who provide support
with fundraising and animal care, adoptions and education. Some
are new volunteers; others have been volunteering for over 40
years. All are there to help make a difference in the lives of animals.
Even in these challenging times, the SPCA has placed more than
6,000 dogs and cats in new homes this year. We performed
spay/neuter surgeries on more than 22,000
cats and dogs to reduce the number of animals
coming into local shelters. We educate thousands of
children about responsible animal care and help hundreds
of seniors with visits of animals and personal
care for their beloved pets every year. All this would
not be possible without volunteers.
On behalf of Princess and others like her who
have received a second chance, thank you for caring.
Hello, Kitty!
howard gold/pawprint productions
KKFBK radio afternoon news anchor Kitty O’Neal didn’t
always plan to be an award-winning journalist and Sacramento celebrity.
“I’ve loved cats since I was a little girl,” O’Neal says. “I really had only
one goal: All I wanted in the world was to go to bed and be covered with
cats. And now I am.”
O’Neal, who just celebrated her 25 th year on-air with KFBK, cherishes
time spent with her five beloved indoor cats. “I cannot imagine my life
without animals in it,” she says. “They have brought more joy and more
friendship to my life than I could have imagined.”
…by Dee Dee Drake
Managing Editor
O’Neal and her husband, Kurt, share their Sacramento
home with felines Sammy, Leo, Rudy, Juneau and
Daisy. Sammy, an Abyssinian mix, is the household’s
eldest (and quite possibly O’Neal’s favorite, although
she wouldn’t confess). “Sammy was a mixed breed that
nobody wanted,” she says. “He likes to sleep on my neck.
Many nights I don’t get a good night’s sleep, but he’s so
old and sweet that I just can’t change things on him now.
He’s been a wonderful friend all these years.”
Meow!
Four of the cats found their way to O’Neal’s
home through well-meaning friends. “I’ve never had to
go out and try to find a cat for myself,” she says. “They
just seem to find me. All my friends know that I’m a cat
lover, and I get these phone calls where they say, ‘We
have this cat...’.” The fifth cat, Daisy, arrived in a different
fashion. “We named her Daisy because she just
sprang up in the bushes in the backyard,” says O’Neal.
“She was a stray, and of course we fed her. Now she’s
here to stay.”
O’Neal has been a longtime supporter of the Sacramento
SPCA, contributing countless hours hosting
events and promoting the organization throughout the
region. The reason for her enthusiasm is simple. “The
thought of all those unwanted animals just breaks my
heart,” she says. “The least I can do is give back to the
animals for all that they’ve given to me.”
“The SPCA is very fortunate to have someone as
caring and influential in the community as Kitty supporting
us and our animals,” says Executive Director
Rick Johnson. “Kitty is always available and willing to
support all of our events. It’s always a pleasure to have her
here. I really enjoyed having Kitty help me give a guided
tour of the SPCA to Betty White. Betty kept trying to
Continued from page 3 >>
get her to take home another cat, but Kitty kept saying
that her household was already full!”
That full house ensures that O’Neal has achieved
her lifelong goal of sleeping while covered with cats. But
it’s not always quite as blissful as she’d planned. “I have
trouble getting out of bed sometimes because they’re all in
there with us,” she says. “I have to manipulate and twist
certain ways to get out, because of course I can’t disturb
them.” Is it worth it “Of course it is,” says O’Neal. “I
wouldn’t have it any other way.” z
SPCA Executive
Director Rick Johnson
carrying Ernesto
from the transport
vehicle on July 7.
Folsom residents Thom and Judy Barrett were becoming
regulars at the Sacramento SPCA. “We’d been looking for a dog for several
months,” says Judy. “We had two wonderful dogs for 13 years, and when
they passed away we waited almost a year to start searching for another one.
We were at the SPCA all the time, just trying to find the right dog.”
On one of their visits, the Barretts noticed Ernesto, a medium-sized mixedbreed
dog who had been transferred to the SPCA from southern California in
July as part of a special rescue operation (see Heartline, Fall 2010). A Chihuahua
rescuer in rural Tehachapi in Kern County had become overwhelmed by
the number of pets in her charge and was evicted from her home. The SPCA
took in more than 160 animals, most of them Chihuahuas, after the Humane
Society of the United States removed them from the property.
SPCA Executive Director Rick Johnson recalls that he personally carried
Ernesto out of the transport trailer when the animals arrived at the shelter.
“I remember him well,” says Johnson. “He was larger than most of the other
s
dogs, and he was quiet and just let me hold him. He put
his head right on my shoulder.”
The public responded enthusiastically to the SPCA’s
requests for adoptive homes for the Kern County animals.
Once they became available, most went to new homes
within a month. But Ernesto continued to linger.
“A lot of people just walked past him in his kennel,”
says SPCA adoption counselor Casey DeCant. “The other
dogs were so much smaller. Ernesto wasn’t an adorable
little Chihuahua.”
A month went by, and then another. Ernesto became
a favorite of the SPCA staff, who often let him lounge in
comfort behind the adoption center’s front counter. But
none of the potential adopters wanted to take a chance on
an eight-year-old dog who was shy, a little nervous, and,
as DeCant says, “kind of funny-looking.” By the time
October rolled around, Ernesto had become a fixture at
the SPCA. “Everybody loved him to pieces,” says DeCant.
“But we still wanted to find him a great home.”
Enter Thom and Judy Barrett.
“We’d seen a lot of dogs, but none of them clicked
with us,” says Judy. “We got home, and my husband said,
‘I keep thinking about Ernesto.’”
The Barretts decided to take a chance on the shy, gentle
dog who had traveled so far to find a new family. Judy says
that Ernie has blossomed in his new environment. “He’s
just so loving,” she says. “He gets up in the morning and
the first thing he does when I let him go outside is run laps
around and around the yard. At night, he gets into bed
with me before he goes to sleep so we can snuggle.”
They have no regrets about making Ernie part of the
household. “He’s turned out to be a wonderful dog, and
we feel so lucky,” Judy says. “We’re so thankful to the
SPCA for taking such good care of him during his time
there. He wouldn’t be doing as well as he is if you guys
hadn’t been so good to him.” z
Two Be Sure to Spay & Neuter
2010 was a banner year for our efforts to stem pet overpopulation through spaying and
neutering. In February we celebrated the grand opening of a new spay/neuter clinic at the recently
opened Sacramento County shelter. Operated by the Sacramento SPCA, the clinic was made possible
with generous support from PetSmart Charities. “SPCA Clinic East” will alter more than
5,000 animals this year. In addition, our on-site spay/neuter clinic at the SPCA shelter performs
more than 16,000 surgeries annually.
You can help by ensuring that your pets are spayed
or neutered, and encouraging friends and family to
do the same. Every dog, cat and rabbit adopted from
the Sacramento SPCA is altered before going to his or
her home, but our clinic is available even if you didn’t
adopt your companion here. Know someone who needs
their pit bull or pit bull mix altered We’ll do it for free
through our We Pay to Spay Program! Visit www.sspca.
org for details. z
s
“The Sacramento SPCA is dedicated to
reducing the regional burden of animals
entering our local shelters,” says Executive
Director Rick Johnson. “We’re looking to
perform more than 25,000 spay/neuter
surgeries annually by 2012.”
Volunteer
Your time is one of the most cherished gifts you
can give to the shelter. Sacramento SPCA volunteers
play a critical role in our work, helping with everything
from clerical tasks to staffing special events
to socializing adoptable animals in the shelter. We
make every effort to match volunteers with the job
they enjoy most, and provide plenty of training and
guidance along the way.
“We couldn’t do what we do without the tremendous
support of our volunteers,” says Executive Director
Rick Johnson. “They make everything possible.”
If your New Year’s resolution is to give back to your
community, sign up today for an upcoming volunteer
orientation at the Sacramento SPCA. Please visit www.
sspca.org for a listing of orientation dates. z
A Perfect Present: Give a Gift Card
Looking for last-minute stocking stuffers Give family and friends
the gift of love with a Sacramento SPCA gift card. Available in any denomination,
the cards may be applied toward adoption fees, SPCA logo merchandise,
event registration, spay/neuter services, vaccines and more. Gift cards must
be redeemed in person at the SPCA.
“We’ve continually had requests from the community to make gift cards
available so that when they are looking for gifts for friends, they can support
the SPCA and provide a gift at the same time,” says Executive Director Rick
Johnson. “They are really two gifts in one, because they also support all of
our work here.” z
Open Your Heart, Open Your Home: Foster a Pet
Becoming a Sacramento SPCA foster parent is one of the very best ways to support the organization. We believe that
the abandoned and abused animals that enter our shelter deserve to have the best possible chance at finding loving, permanent homes.
Foster parents allow our animals to receive the proper care and attention they deserve as they wait for adoption. As a foster parent,
you’ll not only save the lives of animals in your care, but you’ll give other animals coming into the shelter who may not need the same
level of medical attention, a space on our adoption floor to find their own loving homes.
Thousands of animals have been successfully fostered and adopted through the SPCA’s program. One of these success stories belongs
to Sacramento County District Attorney Jan Scully.
Scully, currently serving her fourth term as D.A., adopted former foster kitten Manfred (now called “Taz”) from the Sacramento
SPCA in 2006. Scully and her husband, Brian, were already the guardians of Tigger, a golden-colored cat born to a feral mother. “I
told my husband that Tigger needed a pal,” says Scully. “He said no, but we were driving around one day and we were passing by the
SPCA. Brian said, ‘OK, let’s go in, but don’t expect me to adopt a cat!’ And of course we didn’t come out of there empty-handed.”
Taz, a three-month-old blue longhaired kitten, caught Scully’s eye right
away. “We were looking around, but we kept going back to him,” Scully
remembers. “Then we noticed he had an info packet posted on his cage,
because he’d been in foster care. His foster mom had provided all these
pictures and details about him, and we really liked what we saw. She
provided terrific information about him.” Scully still has Taz’s info packet
and photos as a keepsake.
Apparently Taz lives up to his name in every way. “We kind of named
him for the Tasmanian devil,” says Scully, “because he goes crazy when he’s
playing with cat toys, and also when he chases after butterflies and bugs.”
But Taz has his snuggly moments, too. “He’s so loving when he comes up
and nuzzles you,” she says. “We really enjoy how both he and Tigger will
come and jump up and cuddle with us. We have two loungey chairs upstairs,
and Taz comes up to Brian there every night and puts his nose on Brian’s
forehead. That’s Taz’s special loving.”
Scully remains an ardent fan of the SPCA’s foster care program. “It’s
awesome,” she says. “For people to take on the care of these animals in their
own homes is amazing. They really help shape the kittens they care for and
help them become great pets. The way they nurture them and prepare them
for those who adopt is just great.” z
Dog Winner :
Picture
Perfect
Bryon P. Steiner and “Coco”
“On September 8, 2007, I brought home
Coco, a very frightened six-month-old
Weimaraner mix who was desperately
in need of a good home. For the
next several months, Coco and I spent
a great deal of time learning about
each other. While I spent hours in the
library reading books on dog training,
Coco was learning how to adjust to her
new environment and trust her new
owner. We went for daily walks, played
fetch, went backpacking, and practiced
her dog training almost every single
day. With a lot of hard work on her part
(and patience on mine) Coco has since
become one of the most well-adjusted,
well-mannered, and highly trained
dogs you could ever meet—not to mention
one heck of a bird dog! Now, three
years later, I look back and think how
much she and I both have changed, and
how lucky we are to have each other.”
Cat Winner :
Daisy Garcia and “Tiger” and “Percy”
“I adopted Percy from the SPCA in
February 2008, when he was two years old.
From the moment I brought him home, he
knew this was his new forever home. He
came out of the carrier and made himself
comfortable on the couch like he belonged
there. About six months later, I adopted
Tiger (three months old), also from
the SPCA. I attempted to do the proper
introduction, but as soon as Tiger came out
of the carrier, they were both playing like
long lost brothers—and they have been
ever since. Thank you, SPCA!”
