Parish Office Hours:
Mon.-Fri.: 8:30am-5:00pm
(Closed from1pm-2pm)
Dear Friends, August 19,2010
I write to introduce to you one of the boldest, ambitious and inspiring programs that I
have known in parish life.
Because of the inspiration and commitment of Steven Jurgens-Ling (Vestry Member for
Stewardship) we are about to launch a year-round program called “Living Together in
Christ”. The program assumes that we care for the spiritual life of our church as well as
the individual members of the church and also that we wish to grow.
“Living Together in Christ” will focus on four basic elements or components of the
Christian life – our service, our giving, our praying and our worship. Each element of
the program will provide education, encouragement and opportunities to move forward
in our Christian lives and in the life of the Christian community of The Church of the
Holy Trinity.
Already it has been suggested that careful record should be made of the genesis,
implementation and responses that “Living Together in Christ” will generate; such
records and observations could well be of use to the larger church.
Steven and the CHT staff know that this is not a program that will be perfected in its first
year but I am truly excited at the opportunities the program will present and look forward
to the program being adjusted and shaped as it is experienced.
September 26th – Focus on Service, use of energy and skill
November 14th – Focus on Giving, use of money and possessions
March 6th – Focus on Prayer, use of spiritual desires and opportunities to know God
May 15th – Focus on Worship Attendance, use of time and opportunities to invite others
So, let’s take a deep breath, say our prayers and be ready for God!
Sincerely,
Alan Neale

The Living Word…Living the Word
MINISTERIAL
Dear friends, August 19, 2010
Each time we worship together, these words are said at the end of our scripture readings:
“The Word of the Lord.” And we respond: “Thanks be to God.” Many of us have made
this response so many times that we do it automatically, without stopping to think about
the significance of our words.
What does it mean to say that the Bible is the Word of God This question has been
debated from every imaginable perspective over the centuries. Does it mean that everything
it says is literally, factually true Was there some sort of process of divine dictation taking
place when it was written Few Episcopalians approach the Bible this way, and yet we still
believe that this collection of ancient texts has something to say to us today. We see it as
a living text, and as a text that shapes the way that we live.
MUSINGS
This fall, we will have an opportunity as a church community to delve more deeply into
the richness of scripture and to contemplate how it continues to speak to us in the here
and now. On Sunday mornings, between the two main celebrations of worship, all are
invited to gather on the second floor of the Parish House to read short sections of scripture
and reflect on their meaning together. The program will begin on September 12 with an
exploration of some of the best-known parables of Jesus.
3
Many other programs for education and formation in the faith will also be taking place this
fall. On Wednesday evenings there will be a series on Dreams and the Bible in September,
a series on Social Justice led by Episcopal Community Services in October, and a C.S.
Lewis book study for Advent in December. September 25 begins our new “Discovering
CHT” class, particularly geared toward newcomers but open to all, which will repeat
every two months. The Home Groups program continues to encourage small groups to
gather regularly for prayer, study and fellowship. And on September 19 at 12:30, we will
dedicate our new labyrinth, which will then be available to the community on a regular
basis, with workshops being held from time to time.
With this veritable smorgasbord of educational offerings taking place, how will you make
time to learn and grow in your faith this fall
Blessings,
Diana Carroll

Thank you for your ongoing support of
St. Mary’s food pantry!
On the first Sunday of every month, CHT parishioners
are invited to bring food donations to church to support
the food pantry at St. Mary’s Episcopal Church. Look for
the big basket in the narthex, and place your items there
before the service.
Each donation makes a difference. The food you bring
will go directly to members of our community in need.
St. Mary’s food pantry allows struggling families and
individuals to meet their most basic need in the privacy
and dignity of their own homes.
Please donate non-perishable items that can be
prepared easily and require no extra ingredients.
Cans with pop-tops that don’t require can openers are
preferred. Suggested items include canned veggies,
soups, pasta sauce, chili, baked beans, canned
potatoes, spam, pasta, rice, cereal, and nuts.
Don’t forget to bring your donations on September 5th!
For Mature Adults
We are planning to have events for the more mature
congregants. Those not covered by other groups, although
they are welcome to join us if they desire. Rather an informal
group and we will work things around peoples likes and
dislikes. I shall put a list up in the Narthex and if you put your
names, phone numbers and e-mail addresses, I will endeavour
to contact you.
Dreams and the Bible
Wednesday September 8th, 15th & 22nd – 6:30pm in the
Parish House
Presented by Eric Greene, MS
How do our dreams shape our lives Whether you think
they are divine messages, firing neurons or the residue from
your daily life, they impress upon us our deep capacity to
experience the world symbolically. Our
modern souls are sick with literalism,
isolation and disconnectedness. Paying
attention to our dreams offers one way
to imagine our lived experience as part
of a world soul, connected and shared.
We can try to ignore our dreams or chuck
them aside as mere nonsense, but if we
pay attention to them, we can experience
the numinosity of their content and allow
them to work their healing power upon
us. Join us for a 3-part study of dreams
and the stories of the Bible.
Currently in private practice as a psychotherapist in Haverford
and Philadelphia Pa, Eric began his career at the Philadelphia
AIDS Consortium 5 years ago supporting persons with HIV/
AIDS in their efforts to find employment. He completed his
internship as a therapist at the Art Institute of Philadelphia
helping students as young as 18 with a broad range of
psychological issues. He was employed the next year in
West Philadelphia at an outpatient psychiatric clinic, Mednet
Healthcare Systems, as a psychotherapist working with
children, adolescents, adults, families, and couples.
Eric’s volunteer work extends back nearly 15 years to St.
Barnabas Homeless Shelter where he acted as a general
support staff for the children. His volunteer efforts continued
at Community Legal Services here in
Philadelphia, the Mother Theresa House for
the Dying and the Destitute in India, and
with autistic children in Seoul, South Korea.
Eric has a BA in philosophy from Clark
University in 2002. His continued curiosity
about the human condition led him to a
master’s degree in clinical and counseling
psychology from Chestnut Hill College in
2008, and currently to his work as a Ph.D.
candidate at Pacifica Graduate Institute
in Carpinteria, Ca. He is especially attracted to depth
psychology and in particular to the great Swiss psychiatrist C.
G. Jung, whose psychological perspective encourages us to
pay attention to our inner life.
hope this will be the first of monthly
potlucks.
Two servers will be on hand from
10:30am to receive dishes (both hot
and cold); they will prepare tables
for the lunch and assist with clean up
after the lunch.
Consider bringing a friend!
#2 please bring a salad,
dessert,bread,soda or water.
#3 if possible, please bring a
hot or savory dish.
A sign-up sheet will be posted in the
At the September Potluck we
will hear news about the recent
mission trip made to Guatemala
by members of the parish – Eric
Jimenez and Tonya Williams.
The new labyrinth at CHT is intended as a resource for the
surrounding community and will be open on a regular basis for
workshops and individual use. Please invite your friends and
neighbors to join us for this opening celebration and blessing.
Walking the CHT labyrinth takes about 15-20 minutes,
depending on the pace of the individual and how long they
choose to remain at the center.
I again extend an invitation to attend (bring friends!) to
our wonderful Choral Evensong the first Wednesday of the
month. This month on September 1, we will feature the first
presentation of a new setting of responses composed by one
of our tenors, Stephen Caldwell. Last month Stephen asked
if we might try to find some new settings of the responses
as we have been using three in rotation for over a year. I
casually suggest he should write his own and before the
next morning there appeared in my e-mail a new setting
of the responses. Lesson learned – be careful what you ask
for! I am sure you will agree these are a beautiful addition
to the choir’s repertoire – Thank you Stephen.
“JOYFUL NOISE”
All-Age Family Eucharist
Sunday September 5th @ 9:45am
An abbreviated Eucharist with a certain different style in
music and instruments and… sermon!
This is intended for all ages and will give families
an opportunity to worship together in a very relaxed
atmosphere and will also give members of the family of
the church to experience a different style of worship…
from time to time. It is intended that on the first Sunday of
each month when the “Joyful Noise” takes place there will
be no Sunday School.
We are always looking for more instrumentalists for
this service. If you are interested, please contact Alan
