Castle Acre Priory<br />

This Norfolk attraction is one of the largest and best<br />

preserved monastic sites in England dating back to<br />

1090. It was the home of the<br />

first Cluniac order of monks to<br />

England and the Cluniac love<br />

of decoration is every where<br />

reflected in the extensive<br />

ruins. There is much to see at,<br />

including the beautiful west end<br />

church gable, prior’s lodging<br />

and substantial remains of<br />

many of the buildings round<br />

the cloister. The recreated herb<br />

garden grows herbs which the monks would have<br />

used for medicinal, culinary and decorative purposes.<br />

Visitors can find out more from the exhibition,<br />

Orford Castle - Discover one of England’s<br />

most complete and unusual keeps at this<br />

fascinating visitor attraction in Suffolk. The<br />

unique polygonal tower keep of Orford Castle,<br />

stands beside the pretty town and former<br />

port which Henry II also developed here. The<br />

castle is remarkably intact allowing visitors<br />

to explore from the basement, through the<br />

lower and upper halls to the roof where there<br />

are magnificent views seaward to Orford<br />

Ness. Around the rooms is a maze of passages<br />

leading to the<br />

chapel, kitchen and<br />

other chambers in<br />

the turrets.<br />

Oxburgh Hall 15th-century moated manor<br />

house. No-one ever forgets their first sight of<br />

Oxburgh a romantic, moated manor house. Built<br />

by the Bedingfeld family in the 15th century,<br />

they have lived here ever since. Inside, the<br />

family’s Catholic history is revealed, complete<br />

with a secret priest’s hole. See the astonishing<br />

needlework by Mary, Queen of Scots, and<br />

the private chapel. Outside, you can enjoy<br />

panoramic views from the gatehouse roof and<br />

follow the woodcarving trails in the gardens &<br />

Framlingham Castle is a magnificent 12th<br />

century fortress with a long and colourful<br />
