Peace Lutheran Church
August - 2011 Newsletter
On Ash Wednesday every year when we begin the Lenten season, we turn
our attention to the suffering and death of our Lord Jesus Christ. We also
are reminded of our own mortality: “Remember that you are dust, and to
dust you shall return.” I’ve had people tell me that they avoid thinking
about their own death, because if they think about it, that may cause it to happen. I’ve responded to that
notion by saying that life in this world is going to end for all of us, and there is nothing we can do to
prevent it.
God, however, has done something about death; He triumphed over death by raising Jesus! Since by the
grace of God we share in Christ’s resurrection, we don’t have to be afraid of death, nor of anything else
for that matter. Jesus was serious when he told his disciples several times, “Do not be afraid!”
We not only don’t have to be afraid of death, we can even prepare for it. First and foremost, of course, is
to be living in a right relationship with God our Father through our Lord Jesus Christ. “For God so loved
the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have
eternal life.” (John 3:16)
We can also prepare by giving our family and church information that will be helpful when the time
comes. In order to do this, on the next page of this newsletter, you will find a Funeral/Memorial Preplanner
to fill out. I suggest that you make two copies, and give one to your spouse or family, and the
other return to the church so it can be in our file. Most people do not have an opportunity to provide
input for their “homecoming” because they refuse to think about it. But this form will help both your
family members and your pastor include your thoughts and desires in the church’s service.
I must admit that in past congregations I have had very little success with motivating people to follow
through with this. But for the sake of those who love you, I ask for your cooperation. In the brief one and
one-half years Peace Lutheran has been in existence, we have all experienced church in unique and
different ways; so I’m expecting phenomenal results from you! Thank you, in advance!
Pastor Kurt Wandrey
Since many of you knew Trudy Ward, a charter member of Lutheran Church of the Master, who recently
died in Minnesota, you will be interested to know the family plans. Trudy’s two sons and daughter were all
together in Marshall, MN before Trudy’s death. They are thinking about a memorial service here in Coeur
d’Alene Mother’s Day weekend in 2012. You may see obituary information on Yates’ website,
www.yatesfuneralhomes.com. You may also contact Sandy Crow at 4345 Crow Drive, Laramie, WY
82072; (507)476-2057.
The church calendar will be posted to the website & copies put in the fellowship hall,
once Pastor Wandrey and Heather approve it August 2 nd when he returns from
vacation.

CONFIRMATION INSTRUCTION THIS FALL
Our children’s Christian education is not only fulfilling responsibilities and promises made at their
Baptism, but it is also vital for their future life in Christ. Students who are in 7 th or 8 th grade this Fall, or
High School students who have not been confirmed, along with their parents, are asked to meet with
Pastor Wandrey following the worship service on Sunday, August 14 th , for a brief planning meeting.
Confirmation instruction is preparation for responsible adult membership in our congregation and
learning what it means to be a believer and follower of our Lord Jesus Christ. If you are unable to be
present on Sunday, August 14 th , please contact Pastor Wandrey before that date.
NEW ENVELOPES AVAILABLE FOR TITHES & OFFERINGS
Beginning in August, envelopes will be available for members or guests at worship who prefer to put their
check or cash into an envelope. The envelopes have a line amount for Ministry Support (general fund),
Building Fund, or Special (designated) offering. It is not necessary to use these envelopes; they are simply
available, and may be picked up as you enter the sanctuary for worship, for those who prefer to use them.
*** PLANS ARE FOR WORSHIP TIME AT PEACE TO REMAIN AT 10:00 a.m. THIS FALL!
PEACE/ST MARK’S JOINT WORSHIP/PICNIC SUNDAY, AUGUST 21st at 10:00 a.m. ☺
As we did in June at St Mark’s Lutheran Church, so we will do again, this time at Peace. Their
congregation will join us for worship at our usual time of 10:00 a.m., followed by a picnic in our courtyard,
and time for fellowship and conversation with our nearest LCMC neighbor. There will again be signup
sheets for salads and desserts, as well as setup, serving and takedown. The Church Council will provide a
variety of meats and cheeses, breads and condiments to build your own sandwich. It was a great time
together at their church; let’s make it even better here at Peace!
VISIONING OUR CONGREGATION’S FUTURE
During the month of August, a small group of Peace’s members have been asked by the Church Council to
meet weekly to help guide our Church Council and congregation in discerning where God is leading us in
the ministries and mission of our congregation. They will help us identify the gifts and strengths of our
members, short term and long range goals, then submit the results of their brainstorming to the Church
Council’s September meeting. Your prayers are requested for this group every day during the month of
August, that the Holy Spirit will lead and direct them in their discussions.
“SEEKING HIM” BIBLE STUDY
The people who participated in the “Seeking Him” Bible Study were thoroughly impressed with their
growth in faith and their personal relationship with Jesus Christ, as well as getting to know others in our
congregation they didn’t know very well, including the pastor if they were in his group! Since the course
will be offered again this Fall, we asked a few of the participants to share their experience as a means of
encouragement for others to consider this 13-week study. Their comments are printed here. During the
month of August, a few others will share their comments at Sunday worship services.
SEE SOME COMMENTS REGARDING SEEKING HIM ON THE NEXT PAGE.
“I enjoyed sharing my experience and walk with God with others that have had similar
upbringings. It was nice to know others have had doubts along with victories in our Christian faith.
The overall experience was enlightening and enjoyable. What a great bunch of people serve our God.”
Valda Pfundheller
“I took the Wednesday morning “Seeking Him” bible study. I found it to be very uplifting and
reflective of inner self. It taught me to be more forgiving, compassionate and understanding of others,
both spiritually and otherwise. I would highly recommend this bible study to anyone who has not
taken it. It is phenomenal!!”
New fellowship coordinators -
Karle and Barbara Nimke
New fellowship coordinators Karle and Barbara Nimke moved to the Coeur d’Alene area from
a small farming community in Illinois where Karle was a member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church,
Streator, Illinois. Barbara was baptized in Long Point Christian Church. The high school
sweethearts were married in 1972 and spent their honeymoon in Coeur d’Alene.
In 1977, they arrived back in Coeur d’Alene with a dream of building a home in Squaw Bay
on the east side of Lake Coeur d’Alene. They became members of First United Methodist Church
at 7 th & Wallace, the present home of Peace Lutheran Church. Our historical and beautiful
church building holds a special place in their hearts as their two children, Amanda and Tyler,
were baptized here.
Amanda is now 30 and works as a dental assistant. Tyler, 28, is employed as a forester.
Karle and Barbara have not been blessed with any grandchildren yet.
Karle retired in 2006 from Carpenters Local 1691 after 30+ years in commercial construction.
He enjoys fishing, hunting and cooking.
Barbara’s career came to a close in March of this year after (almost) 30 years as office
manager/secretary/dispatcher for the carpenters union. She currently is an editor/ proofreader
for a marketing firm, and continues as a weekly columnist for the Nickel’s Worth, preparing
word-search puzzles, which she has done since 1978.
As recent members, transferring to PLC from Community United Methodist Church last fall,
the Nimke’s are anxious to share their God-given “talents” as they begin their roles as fellowship
coordinators. They have expressed hopes of fulfilling the congregation’s expectations of them.
Sincerely,
Karle & Barbara Nimke
Sweet Ladies of Peace,
That greeting almost sounds like it could be the name of a convent:) But then it truly describes the
ladies in this church. The attendance at the Girdle of Joy last night (as I'm writing this) was almost
30. Several of you were praying for no rain and God listened. Maybe we should have prayed for it to
be a little warmer...I was worried about you getting chilled, but obviously you were heart
warmed!! We were blessed by fantastic singers, a gutsy harp player, several Bathsheba's, one
obvious Jezebel and incredible food among other things. It seems that there are unusual and special
treats at every gathering. You ladies really know how to get into the theme of things. It is
wonderful that several of you brought friends. It lets us share our blessings. Thank you also to the
gentlemen who delivered and picked up several of our ladies. You are a gift to us!!
The next Girdle of Joy will be held at Cinda Fueller's home (301 E 14th in Post Falls)
on August 11th. “Bathsheba has more to say.” Remember...6:30 to 8:00 or 8:30 or????
Bring a snack to share and whatever you like to drink. We will laugh and love each other.
If you have any questions, or need directions please call Gail at 773-4106 or email
