May 2012
Have you ever considered how unique and special the Church is? There is no other institution like it in the
world! People of every size, age, vocation, and heritage, all brought together to share true beliefs and just
values, working together for the same goals and purposes. God really knows what he is doing when he brings
us together in the Body of Christ! We not only need the grace God offers us here, but we also need each
other. We really cannot get along and have the same quality of life and lifestyle without one another.
God, knowing that we are not created to be alone, and not strong enough to make it on our own, has given
special gifts to each of us. When brought together, God uses us and our gifts to produce a congregation and
church family. Each of us has something unique and essential for the well-being of each other’s faith and life,
and this congregation of Peace Lutheran Church. When we share our gifts, God works with us in action and
mission to accomplish his purposes.
We’re only kidding ourselves, and robbing ourselves, others, and God, when we don’t take an active role in
the family of God. Have you noticed when someone you’ve been sitting next to in worship is absent? Or a
member of your church group is missing? Or someone who’s been taking care of a particular task no longer is
doing it? Of course you have! Why not let them know that they are important to you and your life in Christ?
And don’t forget to acknowledge those you do see every Sunday, lest you begin to take them for granted.
St. Paul writes at the beginning of his letter to the Philippians, “I thank my God every time I remember you,
constantly praying with joy in every one of my prayers for all of you, because of your sharing in the gospel
from the first day until now.” What a great idea! God has given us each other to share life, letting us have a
place in each other’s lives. Thank God for this fellowship of believers! Thank God for uniting us in this
Communion of Saints! And thank you for sharing your gifts in our ministry together!
Daily Devotional Booklets
Peace Lutheran Church
May - 2012 Newsletter
Pastor Pastor Pastor Pastor Kurt Kurt Kurt Kurt Wandrey Wandrey Wandrey Wandrey
I noticed more than three dozen “extra” devotional booklets on our information table. I find this interesting
since we only order enough for about half our households to have one! These little booklets offer some real
gems for daily life, as well as focusing our attention on God’s Word for a few moments each day. “Christ in
Our Home” and “The Word in Season” both follow the lessons used at worship on Sunday morning. So they
are both a great way to prepare your hearts and minds for what you will hear at worship. “Our Daily Bread”
which is provided by one of our members, Fred Mitchell, offers very thought-provoking guidelines for
everyday living in Christ. I invite you to pick up one of these booklets and start using it today! In the morning
when you rise, or at night before you close your eyes, or at the family dinner table are all appropriate times to
turn to the Lord for a few moments of devotion!
Peace Newsletter
May 2012
The following article was signed simply “Mother”, and seemed most appropriate with Mother’s Day just a few
weeks away.
“It’s Your Move, Child!”
I gave you life…..But I cannot live it for you.
I can teach you things…..But I cannot make you learn.
I can give you directions…..But I cannot always be there to lead you.
I can allow you freedom…..But I cannot account for it.
I can take you to church…..But I cannot make you believe.
I can teach you right from wrong…..But I cannot decide for you.
I can buy you beautiful clothes…..But I cannot make you beautiful inside.
I can offer you advice…..But I cannot make you accept it.
I can give you love…..But I cannot force it upon you.
I can teach you to be a friend…..But I cannot choose them for you.
I can teach you about sex…..But I cannot keep you pure.
I can tell you the facts of life…..But I cannot build your reputation.
I can tell you about alcohol…..But I cannot say no for you.
I can warn you about drugs…..But I cannot prevent you from using them.
I can tell you about lofty goals…..But I cannot achieve them for you.
I can warn you about sin……But I cannot make your morals.
I can pray for you…..But I cannot make you walk with God.
I can tell you of Jesus…..But I cannot make Him your Savior.
I can tell you how to live…..But I cannot give you eternal life.
This serves as a good reminder for both Mother or Father, and child. By the life we live, we honor our Godly
Mother and Father, or the memory of those dear parents; and we honor God by obeying the fourth
commandment, “Honor your father and your mother.” Have a blessed Mother’s Day! And remember, both
parent and child, all that you can do.
Hello from the Worship Team!
Thanks for participating in the elating Passion Week and Easter. I hope many of you had a
meaningful experience.
The altar guild falls under the Worship Team. I'm attempting the set up teams to serve one month at
a time twice a year. This will give consistent, but not a burdensome, service for the preparation of the
communion service. I will prepare a task list and help each one to learn the job. Please give me a call
if you would like to help. I will be calling you in the next two weeks.
Thanks. Barb Hunley
Council Highlights by President Gail
Council met on April 10, 2012 with all members in attendance except for our beloved Pastor who had
undergone shoulder surgery that day.
Peace Newsletter
May 2012
Brett Kirking led our devotions and prayer. It was very meaningful to be reminded to “bloom where we are
planted”. We, at Peace, have received so much from God to be grateful for. Of course we want our own
church, but God has a plan for us right where we are.
The continuing resolutions were approved, with the exception of a couple of the team descriptions that were not
ready to be reviewed. A copy of the resolutions that were approved will be posted soon. The team descriptions
will be added in May upon approval.
Council voted to invite neighboring LCMC congregations to join us in August for our annual worship/picnic.
The date will be determined soon.
Building Committee continues to work on a survey for the congregation to get your thoughts on directions that
you would like to see us go. It will be coming soon.
The task force for our electronic/web policy has been working on a policy to be approved in May pertaining to
what information we put on the web. Yup!! It’s a new world folks.
Council approved a beautiful business card, which Lee Ely designed, to be used as a way of advertising
ourselves and our location. We have ordered them and you will be invited to come up with wonderful ways to
use these. There are some great ideas that our Vision Team gave us last year that we will incorporate in
distribution.
Those are just some highlights from the meeting.
NO GIRDLE OF JOY IN MAY: There are so many graduations and confirmations and other events that take
place in May that we will wait until June for our next one. Watch the next newsletter for further information.
SERENDIPITY BIBLE STUDY
The Serendipity Bible Study will be taking the summer off. We will meet through May and continue studying some of
the shorter books of the bible like 1,2,3 John and Jude. We may look at 1,2 Peter if we finish the others early. Join us at
the Coffee Cottage in Post Falls any Wed morning at 10:00 AM. Visitors are always welcome…and the coffee is great.
Peace Lutheran Church
Stewardship Team
The Joy of Giving!
Peace Newsletter
May 2012
Tucked away in a cozy corner of the church office, Stewardship Team met on April 10. Lee Ely, Tanya Frey, and
Lynn Affeldt pondered a remarkable devotion that Lee shared centering around 1 Chronicles 29:9 about the
joy of giving. This chapter records “the pledge drive and fund raising efforts for the building of the Temple of
Solomon to the Lord.” King David pledged incredible resources not only from the public treasury, but also from
his own personal wealth. This inspired the families, leaders, commanders, and officials of the day to “give
willingly” all they had to the Temple fund. There was much rejoicing at giving to the Lord – multiple praises to
God acknowledging that all things come from Him! I could actually see this grand celebration of spontaneous
giving straight from the heart in my mind’s eye. Imagine all the people and King David literally dancing in the
streets demonstrating this true heart of thanks! WOW!!
After we calmed down (that was hard!), we reviewed our team description for Peace’s Continuing Resolutions
to submit at council, our spring Time and Gifts assessment – more to come on that, and consulted about the
state of Peace’s financial health. Tanya shared that at the end of the first quarter our year-to-date total giving
of $38.5K is over budget ($35.3K) by $3,227! Are you dancing in the streets yet Peace Lutheran?
Together we are joyously constructing this temple for God’s purpose. It doesn’t matter that we are in rented
space – we are building a community filled with people that actively endeavor to live God’s Word. We are
feeding the hungry, supporting Christian education, have a Dorcas Quilting ministry that reaches out in
enormous directions, uplifting our military with Bible sticks, and assisting the homeless and those in need –
and we are just getting started! The people of Peace are faithful in their generosity just as in King David’s day.
We are wholeheartedly motivated and deliberate in sharing our treasure for the glory of God. Thanks and
praise!
Yours in Christ,
Greetings and God’s Peace to All of You,
Many of you know me already, but for those of you that don’t, I am the “Hat Lady.” I have recently replaced
Caren Woods who did an awesome job for the last year and a half. Thank you Caren! As I go through this
transitional period and until I become more familiar with your regular giving requests, I am asking that you
PLEASE designate your contribution/pledges, on your checks or envelopes, to the General fund, the Building
fund, a Memorial fund, or other special designation. This will ensure that your contributions are indeed being
recorded where you have requested them to go. Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have
any questions or concerns please call me at (208)773-3025 or catch me in church on Sunday morning.
Thank you again for giving me this honor of serving you and Christ. I am so Blessed.
Welcome to the Dorcas Circle!
Dorcas has been busy meeting every Thursday and we have been putting a lot of quilts out. We recently gave
10 quilts to Children’s Village and two quilts to Hospice House in Hayden.
If you have fabric you are not using – especially flannel for baby quilts – Dorcas could put it to good use. We
also can always use blankets, pillows, batting, thread, sheets, and pillowcases.
The end of May we will be finishing things up for the year and distributing the rest of the quilts. If you would
like to purchase one of our quilts for a gift over the summer, please see one of the Dorcas ladies before we give
them to the community.
Thank you for your support.
Fellowship Report
Peace Newsletter
May 2012
The new schedule has been distributed for May, June and July. If your name appears, please mark your
calendar. If you cannot serve, please call someone else on the list (sooner is better than later) and trade with
them. Then call Heather so she can make appropriate changes on the list and for upcoming bulletins.
We hope you choose to serve on the fellowship teams. Names rotate enough so that usually a person/couple
serves only once every 5-6 months. If for any reason you cannot serve, however, please contact me.
Fellowship teams bring snack items for the hour of visiting which follows Sunday worship. Along with setting
up the two (2) snack areas, clean-up afterwards is necessary and includes emptying of garbage cans,
vacuuming and stacking of chairs. More detailed instructions are posted in the kitchen.
Thank you so much for all ways in which you help!
Now, onto the supply list…
Needs are as follows: hot chocolate mix, small plastic cups, plastic wrap, toilet paper and air freshener spray
(no floral).
Looking ahead to Father’s Day (June 17 th )…
The fellowship committee will be serving a special menu in honor of our men – husbands, fathers, sons.
The main feature will be delicious (we know that because we’ve sampled ahead of time!) HOMEMADE
sausage biscuits. More info on this will appear in the June newsletter.
“God has not promised skies always blue, flower-strewn pathways all our lives through;
God has not promised sun without rain, joy without sorrow, peace without pain.
But God has promised strength for the day,
Rest for the labor, light for the way,
Grace for the trials, help from above, unfailing sympathy, undying love.”
