RESORT
Try the Presidential Suite
A
ttention all skiers, snowboarders and mountain-lovers: Get yourself to
The Fairmont Banff Springs this winter season to hit the slopes and
get some much-needed time away from the city.
Tucked away in the Canadian Rockies just a one-hour scenic drive
from Calgary, this hotel is the defi nition of good Canadian hospitality,
breathtaking architecture and rich history. First opened in 1888 under the
vision of Cornelius Horne, Vice President of the Canadian Pacifi c Railway
(CPR), the Fairmont Banff Springs was modeled after a Scottish castle.
Sadly, disaster struck in 1925 when a raging fi re burned it to the ground.
It was rebuilt in 1928 undergoing additions every year up until the recent
completion of a $75-million restoration. More than ever, this year-round
hotel has become the epitome of mountain luxury.
There isn’t a bad view at the Fairmont Banff Springs. Each of the 770 guest
rooms and suites overlook a jaw-dropping panorama of the surrounding
valley and mountains. Three world-class ski resorts are close to the hotel,
as well as the quaint nearby town of Banff. The guest rooms are cozy and
charming, but if you really want to live large make sure to reserve the very
exclusive Presidential Suite – it boasts eight bedrooms, library, living room,
grand piano, fi replace and private glass elevator.
If you’re more drawn to summer than winter sports then come to the Fairmont
Banff Springs in spring or summer to play 18 holes on its internationally
lauded golf course, designed in 1928 by world-renowned golf architect
Stanley Thompson. Another nine holes were added a few years later. There
is no chance of getting a bout of mountain fever here: The Willow Stream
Spa offers every service necessary to detox and de-stress, a games and
bowling centre keep the heart pumping, tennis courts help hone backhand
skills, horseback riding liberates the soul, and 19 shops and boutiques
keep mountain-dwelling fashionistas happy. A state-of-the-art conference
centre seats 1,600 people, with meeting rooms and an audio-visual area
for business pow-wows and presentations, making this hotel the perfect
mix of business and pleasure.
Luckily for skiers and snowboarders choices abound in terms of terrain,
from Banff’s Mount Norquay to Sunshine Village to Lake Louise Ski Area
or Jasper’s Marmot Basin. After a day of hitting the powder nothing beats
getting a complimentary shuttle back to your hotel and unwinding in the
lap of luxury. During the festive season, fl oor-to-ceiling Christmas trees
decorate the hallways while the smell of delicious baked goods fi lls the air
and teases rumbling stomachs, hungry from a hard day on the slopes.
Now is the time to rummage through that storage closet and dig out those
Rossignols, Nordicas and Burtons.

CHARITIES
A Life to Live
In this world every person has the right to live a life as fulfi lling, happy and
full of love as is humanly possible.
The Cascadia Society, run by a dedicated team of special care professionals
or “co-workers” in a beautiful two-storey blue house nestled in lush North
Vancouver, is a community dedicated to enriching the lives of specials needs
individuals, also known as companions. This “life-sharing community” was
established and built upon the vision and principles of the international
Camphill movement, founded in 1940 by Austrian pediatrician, Dr. Karl
Koenig. The philosophy of this movement is based on anthroposophy, a
view originated by philosopher and educator Rudolph Steiner, the goal of
which is to integrate the body, spirit and soul using arts as a healing and
educational method.
Nearly 70 years later, the Camphill movement has grown to over 100
communities, located in over 20 countries internationally with thousands of
co-workers, companions and volunteers sharing their day-to-day activities,
emotions, responsibilities, trust and respect. Thus, each person is also
known as a “contributor”. Companions’ needs differ from one to the next.
One individual may require long-term living arrangements and care, while
the other may need schooling; these are dealt with accordingly, but also
give room for that individual to lead as mature and dignifi ed a life as their
disabilities allow. There is a delicate balance maintained between the two
values of interdependence and individuality, both of which seem juxtaposed
but are inherently present in Camphill communities. Integrating the two
brings fulfi llment to companions’ lives because it gives them the support they
require, coupled with the freedom to be who they are without judgement.
The Cascadia Society was founded in 1990, starting as a small group of
eleven curative education, youth guidance and social therapy professionals
and one family home. In time, and with more support, the organization has
grown into an offi cial member for Camphill North America, providing care
for over thirty companions (ranging in age from 19 years old to 58 years
old) enrolled in the day program. Four residences -- Bridget House, Kaspar
House and Walsh Residence, and the latest addition, “Castle House” – are
located nearby the main building, giving certain special needs companions
the 24-hour care and guidance required. Now operating on an annual
budget of $700,000, the society is run by the coworkers and board of
directors, (president John Barker) and kept active in Camphill affairs by
Ruth Oslund, the delegate to the Camphill Association, and Patricia Smith,
a member of the Camphill Foundation Board.
There is certain feeling one gets when walking through the doors and
halls of this Cascadia community, an air of unashamed friendliness and
a genuine sincerity to see a new face. Arash, one of the companions, is
eager to shake your hand and introduce himself, doing so with a smile lit up
brightly. It is possible part of his happiness comes from it being a Thursday.
“Every Thursday we have a lunch with set tables,” says Executive Director
08 | THE V LIST | WINTER 07 | www.thevlist.com
Patricia Smith. “we also have a handbell program. Our companions and
coworkers all ring bells, and give some public performances every year.”
Artistic endeavors are an important part of Cascadia. A giant mosaic based
on the zodiac and made up of 173 pieces, constructed by the companions
under the guidance of a professional mosaic layer over a few years, is laid
out in the back driveway, serving as a meeting place for the house. “One
of our activities here is we make mosaics,” continues Smith. “It’s kind of
an unusual thing, but you’ll never see a mosaic like that anywhere else.”
Sitting at the end of the back driveway is a prop giant, also built by the
companions as a part of a play they recently performed. Rooms upstairs
are dedicated to weaving, candle-making, card-making, table runner-making,
costume-building for events and plays, as well as music and small movement
therapy. Downstairs, the basement serves as a basket shop, where baskets
are weaved by the companions from specially grown willows.
A couple doors down from the main building sits one of The Cascadia
Society’s residences, which was acquired in 2005. Currently it houses four
companion and four co-workers, two of which are permanent and two of
which are volunteers on exchange from Germany. It is undeniably cozy with
big rooms, plenty of light and a garden of fl owers, herbs and vegetables
in the backyard with weaved willow edges. There is a waiting list for
residency at Cascadia, which is one of the society’s biggest obstacles.
Apart from a dire need for more residential housing, the organization also
requires more full-time and part-time co-workers, as well as volunteers to
help with the incredible growth spurt that happened in the course of a few
years. “Throughout this sector, we need to fi nd people who are willing
and able to share their lives and homes with someone who has special
needs,” Smith says. Now members of the British Columbia Association for
Community Living (BCACL), The Cascadia Society hopes to shed more
light on their current situation and bring more enrichment into the lives
of their companions, who unconditionally love those around them in an
unabashed way from which the rest of us should learn. “They’re so pure
somehow,” Smith says.
In one simple phrase, it becomes so perfectly clear just how exemplary The
Cascadia Society companions are for us all.

Masi at Deuce
ocal and fresh are key words when it comes to Deuce’s cuisine. This Lonsdale Avenue restaurant is a great place for friends, family and colleagues
to enjoy a great variety of fl avours with Deuce’s share plates. Executive chef Courtney Burnham has added a few twists on our favourite dishes.
Diversity and freshness are key to B.C. food, and chef Burnham has sourced as much as possible from a variety of local producers. With an abundance
of meats, poultry and seafood to choose from it can be a challenge for diners to decide what wine should accompany a meal. “Food should taste the
way food should taste and wine should taste the way wine should taste,” explains Ian McTavish, Deuce’s operations director, when asked about pairing
wine with food.
McTavish’s recommendations have taken into account the fact that most diners continue to savour their wine that was chosen for dinner when they are
ready to sample the dessert menu. Instead of gulping down half a glass of wine, McTavish’s suggestions can be enjoyed throughout an entire meal. The
Masi vineyard selections are held in high regard when paired with three dishes of Deuce’s cuisine.
The Masi winery has been owned by the Boscaini family since the end of the 18 th century. It has seen six generations of the Boscaini family. Masi wines
are exclusively premium wines which are modern in style but deeply rooted in tradition. It is world renowned for its Amarone in Veneto, Italy. However,
they have expanded their wineries to Tuscany and even as far as Argentina.
The Masi Masianco 2006’s blend of pinot grigio and verduzzo achieves a much deeper and riper fl avour than a chardonnay. “The
Masianco is a good alternative to Chardonnay when looking for something different,” suggests McTavish. The Masianco is an ideal
aperitif. It teams up perfectly with hors d’oeuveres, fi sh and white meats. It is paired nicely with Deuces seared scallops’ plate. The
accompaniments of this spectacular three-huge scallops dish are a nice crispy pancetta, vanilla mango puree, vegetarian caviar and crispy
sage leaves.
- Priced at Duece at $40/bottle
Masi Campofi orin 2004 is rich and full bodied, with an aging potential of 10 to 15 years. This versatile wine complements the many
fl avours within Deuce’s Beef Lasagna. The Beef Lasagna is an example of how executive chef Courtney Burnham adds a delectable twist
to the Italian staple. Grilled AAA striploin, fried pasta, oven dried tomato, sautéed spinach and Comox camembert fuse together. Topped
with truffl e jus, this succulent dish is divided into four pieces. Vegetarians need not despair, as they have options. Portobello mushrooms
are available in lieu of beef. This fusion of fl avours contains many different components that can be diffi cult to pair.
-Priced at Deuce at $47/bottle
The 2003 Masi (Costasera) Amarone Classico 2004 has serious fl avour, according to McTavish. He points out the 15%
alcohol content compared to the 13% of the other Masi recommendations he has made. According to McTavish, Masi pioneered the
appassimento process (laying the grapes out to dry partially after harvesting) that leads to nice full-bodied wines. He points out the wine
will not change the fl avour of the short ribs. The deep red with violet twinges. Some dishes are worth taking time, such as Braised beef
short ribs. The four-hour long cooking process used for beef short ribs can be compared to that of lamb. This very wintery dish with
cabernet syrup is accompanied with potato gaufrettes.
TRAVEL
My Private Way
Millions of people head to Canadian airports on a daily basis, arriving two
hours before boarding the aircraft and enduring the necessary security
checks. They spend hours breathing what seems to be recycled air in the
airport waiting lounges. Then they line up for boarding and squeeze into
tiny seats, wondering who might be seated beside them.
The inconveniences of conventional air travel are frequent, such as delayed
14 | THE V LIST | WINTER 07 | www.thevlist.com
or cancelled fl ights. There is, however, an alternative way to travel that
saves precious time and avoids all these irritations: fl ying private jet.
Most people, of course, will never own their own jet. But there is a way
to experience the jet-setting lifestyle without becoming a head of state
or right-hand to Donald Trump. It’s called the Marquis Jet Card, and it’s
so simple that it slides easily into your wallet. It gives you 25 hours in the
TRAVEL
aircraft model of your choice from the Net Jets fl eet, the largest fl eet in the sky. While most standard business jets have crossed the skies for at least 16
years, this fl eet is stocked with jets less than fi ve years old. Marquis staff takes pride in helping you choose the aircraft type that best meets your travel
needs and provides you with maximum fl exibility.
The biggest advantage of fl ying privately is time saved. A four-city business trip could take four days on commercial fl ights, whereas a private jet could
cut it down to a day and a half. It’s not just that the fl ight is quicker: a private jet also eliminates line-ups through check-in, security, and boarding. You can
arrive at the airport 10 minutes before take-off. When you factor in the saved expenses of accommodation and meals, fl ying privately turns out to be costeffective.
Not to mention, it’s stress-free. “You fl y on your own schedule and save hours by avoiding the long lines, delays and many hassles associated
with travel today,” says Ken Newman, vice president of Marquis Jets.
The high-quality service, guaranteed availability and global capabilities of Marquis Jets ensures better performance in all aspects of your business.
Marquis travel allows you to visit several out-of-the-way clients and facilities in a single day. It also helps to retain, reward, and attract key employees.
Busy executives will appreciate the luxury of being able to spend extra time at home rather than on the road.
If your travel is for pleasure, you and your family will love the hassle-free trip. Your vacation begins the second you leave your home, and you will arrive
at your destination rested and feeling your best.
The value in luxury and safety also rates high among the company’s clients. “Choosing your aviation partner is like choosing your doctor: you consider
trust, service and safety,” says Marquis Jet founder and CEO Kenny Dichter as reported in the 19 th annual “Best of the Best” issue of the Robb Report.
This issue of the Robb Report placed Marquis Jets as the winner in the “Best Flight-Card Program: Fractional.” The Robb Report applauded the simplicity
and low fi nancial risk of a jet card with the many advantages of the NetJets fractional ownership program and additional attractive benefi ts provided by
Marquis Jet’s alliance partners. This exclusive partnership between NetJet and Marquis Jets offers the best of both worlds.
“Get in their lives” is the Marquis mantra. Like the
concierge at the Pan Pacifi c Hotel, Marquis’ customer
service hits the top of the charts. Marquis staffers take
the time to know who their clients are. Flowers and
a card on the jet welcoming someone celebrating an
anniversary or a birthday is an example of the standard
of care Marquis provides to make each excursion
special.
Being featured on prime time TV shows including the
Apprentice, American Idol and most recently the HBO
series Entourage has helped make “Marquis Jet Card”
household words. Although fl ying privately is much
more practical, there is something about the luxury that
seems romantic. “Come fl y with me, let’s fl y, let’s fl y
away. If you can use, some exotic booze, there’s a bar
in far Bombay. Come fl y with me, well fl y well fl y away,”
croons Frank Sinatra. Perhaps this freedom and luxury
was what he meant.

ART
Carving Forté
B
eing in the presence of world-renowned Native American wood carver
Klatle-Bhi gives you a sense of incredible peace. A certain aura of
calm and spirituality surrounds the artist whose kind eyes, wide smile and
wise manner instantly make you feel as if you are in the company of a truly
great person.
On March 21, 1966, Klatle-Bhi (pronounced “cloth-bay”, meaning “head
Killerwhale in a pod of Killerwhales”) was born to the people of the Squamish
Nation and into a family of carvers. His grandmother, Emily Baker from the
Gwayi Village of Kwakwaka’wakw people in Kingcome Inlet, was a huge
infl uence on his young life from the start, having given him his name. “I
grew up with masks and art around me my whole life,” says Klatle-Bhi.
“As a young boy, I tried drawing and was always fascinated by it.” His fi rst
carving experience came at the age of seven, when his older cousins gave
him an extremely sharp knife and he began carving little plaques. Soon, the
budding artist cut his fi nger badly causing his cousins to keep him away
from any more knives. Thus, Klatle-Bhi put carving on the back burner for
the next while.
Then, about 17 years ago, Klatle-Bhi was re-introduced to carving by a
young woman he had been dating at the time who saw his passion for the
16 | THE V LIST | WINTER 07 | www.thevlist.com
art. “She gave me a little set of carving tools, just a little miniature pop set,
and that was it,” says the artist. From then on nothing could stop him from
carving – he experimented on everything from plaques to relief carving
to Northwest coast designs. “I did all my own research for the fi rst four
years of my carving career,” explains Klatle-Bhi. “I spent countless hours
in museums and galleries. There wasn’t enough literature on the planet
for me to try and understand how the artwork works.” He pored over the
works of carving greats Bill Reid and Robert Davidson, as well as older
pieces, before setting off on a canoe journey in 1993 at age 25.
From North Vancouver to Bella Bella he paddled a 45-foot canoe, learning
on the way how to pick the drum and how to sing old Squamish songs. “It
was a real cultural event (learning) how our people used to travel and how
they used to be,” Klatle-Bhi reminisces. “It was a dream come true for me.
Living in this modern world, I’d always wanted to live like our old people.”
The artist had long experienced an internal struggle, living out his teenage
and early 20s’ “fun years,” yet always feeling the call to come back to his
own roots. The canoe journey was one of both personal growth and relief.
“I quickly realized how many relatives I had all the way up the coast and
how important family was, what our culture was and the art, how it was
really a part of who we are.” Klatle-Bhi soon learned that the art harboured
lessons and teachings about his people, where
they come from and where they are going,
further solidifying his decision to move toward
mask carving as a full-time occupation.
His uncle Wade Baker, who is also a mask
carver, was his fi rst teacher and mentor. As a test
of his nephew’s seriousness for carving, Wade
sent the young artist to fi rst fi nd a knife and then
come and see him. Klatle-Bhi of course bought
a small knife. His uncle set him up with a block
of wood agreeing to show him the techniques of
carving a mask under one condition: that Klatle-
Bhi carve the mask with the very small knife he
had purchased. “I was there every day for 14,
15, 16 hours because I just loved it so much,”
he says. “I was building a relationship with my
uncle again and with the rest of my family. I was
learning lots more about my culture. I had a
real hunger for my culture.” The second mask
Klatle-Bhi worked on was completed without any
assistance from his mentor. Though it took the
artist a month to complete, the lessons from his
Uncle Wade were already deeply ingrained in
both his mind and soul.

The fi rst piece Klatle-Bhi ever sold went to gallerist
Douglas Reynolds, who bought it for $800 and re-sold
it for $1,900. He was hesitant at fi rst to go up against
the big-name carvers like Robert Davidson, Joe David
and Bill Reid, but one day realized that if he never tried,
he would never know. Soon after, he quickly sold three
masks and became the apprentice of well-known artist
Simon Dick, who happened to be from the same area as
his grandmother. Working for two years under the master
carver’s watchful eye, Klatle-Bhi’s work rose to the next
level, specifi cally in terms of colour and contemporary
design. He also began putting his own experiences into
the masks. His moon masks became instantly popular
sellers with their calming blue tones. Klatle-Bhi was
approached four years later to do his fi rst exhibition
entitled “The Youngbloods” and featuring the next young
generation of Native American artists. All of his pieces
sold except for one, and ten years later it still remains
unsold. “I think it’s supposed to be a potlatch piece,”
Klatle-Bhi says. “I think it was meant to be somewhere in
a potlatch collection and danced and (remain) part of the
family. One day I might buy it back, fi x it up and give it to
my uncle or my grandmother.”
Klatle-Bhi spent the next few years in the company of
other major carvers and artists but it was apparent that he
had already made a name for himself among his people
and in the art community. His wife Erin, who is Irish, runs
their Spirit Gallery in Horseshoe Bay, and the charmingly
warm couple has a gorgeous brood of children. Klatle-
Bhi’s collection of work ranges from masks, totem poles
and talking sticks to carved pendants, canoes, prints,
paintings and clothing. Pieces from his collection can
be found in galleries and private homes in Vancouver,
Washington, New York, Toronto, Spain and California,
each one telling a story and teaching a valuable lesson.
Klatle-Bhi’s door, when he’s not partaking in his second
love of sport fi shing, is always open.
The artist is currently working on a ghost mask with no
eyes. “In my travels and in my life experiences, I’ve seen
a lot of people who are walking this world with no eyes,”
explains Klatle-Bhi. “All they see is the physical world of
things – they have to do this to get money or my life is bad
or I’m going to beat my wife. They don’t see. They don’t
see themselves, and it’s all about personal development.
If you don’t grow as a human being, then you fail. You fail
in life. We’re here to succeed as human beings. That’s
the key – the spirit.”
It’s a very good thing the world has Klatle-Bhi to show us
the way.

Whether it was on the pink, green or red carpet, celebrities hit Vanhattan
for some of the season’s biggest parties and fundraisers.
Actress and supermodel Elizabeth Hurley helped Vancouver Art Gallery
chief Kathleen Bartels and Holt Renfrew General Manager Gary Balaski
fl ip the switch to “paint” the exterior of the Vancouver Art Gallery in a wash
of pink lights. As part of the Estée Lauder Breast Cancer Awareness
Campaign, the VAG joins a list of prestigious buildings and monuments,
including the Empire State Building in New York and the Sydney Opera
House in Australia, in creating brilliant displays of pink lights for the
cause. Looking positively stunning in a pink gown, Hurley, the Estée
Lauder spokesmodel, kibitzed with VAG supporters before making a
special appearance at the exclusive Holt Renfrew VIP reception.
Will and Grace’s Eric McCormack and his wife Janet Holden were the
special guests at the Performing Arts Lodge’s “Dining with the Stars”
fundraiser. Thirty lucky patrons (who paid up to $1,000 to dine with the
actor of the hit NBC television show) gathered at the swank Shaughnessy
home of host Lucia Lundin for a delicious repast designed by renowned
chef Diane Clement. Fans mixed and mingled with the Canadian actor
and feasted on Clement’s fi ve-course meal before retiring to the media
room to enjoy a special screening of McCormack’s private blooper reel
from his Emmy award-winning comedy series. Prepare for more Eric
sightings this fall as the acclaimed actor will return to begin shooting
a new movie and to put the fi nishing touches on his family’s West
Vancouver home.
Oscar-award-winner Marlee Matlin walked the green carpet for the
West Coast premiere of Leonardo Dicaprio’s eco-documentary “The
11 th Hour”. Local environmentalist Tzeporah Berman is one of 50
experts who appear in Dicaprio’s fi lm, and she urges the protection of
endangered rainforests here and around the world. Berman hosted the
fi lm fête along with NDP environmental critic Gregor Robertson at the
Fifth Avenue Cinemas. Matlin was joined by Hollywood producer James
Shavick, the L-Word’s Mia Kirshner and Stargate SG1’s Michael Shanks
and Lexa Doig at the exclusive green gala screening. Hollywood is also
going green. Paris Hilton, Vanessa Williams, Adrian Grenier and Sharon
Lawrence were just a few of the notables who supported Berman and
Dicaprio at the Los Angeles opening.
Rolling out the red carpet, artistic director John Alleyne and executive
director Susan Howard welcomed Ballet BC benefactors at the Centre
for the Performing Arts for the start of the company’s new dance “Alive!”
season. The company kicked it off with the National Ballet of Canada’s

romantic classic “Giselle” and a visit from dance icons Karen Kain and
Rex Harrington. As announced on opening night, Alleyne will bring his
much-acclaimed work “A Streetcar Named Desire” to Toronto for the
larger masses to behold. As it truly deserves a national audience, let’s
hope a generous donor will get on board and help get it there.
Armed with his usual bevy of scantily clad babes, self-proclaimed “Rock
God”-turned-reality-television star Gene Simmons of KISS made a
stop in Vancouver to promote his MoneyBag line of clothing at Alberto
Leone’s L2 designer store. Hoping to take the fashion world by storm,
Simmons has joined forces with Vancouver designer Jason Dussault
to produce a line of “in-your-face” street wear. Dussault’s custom ink
company has designed hoodies for Nelly Furtado, Rob Zombie, and
Prevail of the “Swollen Members”. Legions of fans young and old lined
the store to receive a kiss and autograph from the legendary rock star.
Less rocking these days and more rolling (as in the mid section,) the
colourful KISS bassist can now be seen on the boob tube in the A&E
series Family Jewels.
Lights, camera and plenty of action as starlets, leading men and a few
unemployed actors checked out the celluloid celebrations and movies
at the Vancouver International Film Festival. Film and television actress
Steph Song helped kick off the 26 th edition. Spotted on the celebrity red
carpet at Steven Hegyes and Shawn Williamson’s pre-VIFF Brightlight
Pictures bash, the statuesque actress and former International Maxim
model joined her television cast mates for the fi lm fest gala opener at
Rocky Mountaineer. Song will soon be starring in Douglas Copeland’s
jPod to be shown on CBC television. Other celebs making the VIFF red
carpet parades and paparazzi fodder included Joan Chen, Alan Thicke,
Ricky Schroeder and Isaiah Washington.
The ongoing Vancouver civic strike did not dampen the spirits of opera
enthusiasts. Originally scheduled for the Orpheum, two of Canada’s
most celebrated opera voices, tenor Richard Margison and soprano
Measha Brueggergosman took to the stage of the Chan Centre for
Performing Arts for an unforgettable evening of music in support
of Festival Vancouver. Electricity fi lled the air as the two Canadian
treasures joined the Vancouver Opera Orchestra under the leadership
of conductor Leslie Dala in a gorgeous program that included beloved
arias and duets by Wagner, Verdi and Debussy.
Burnaby crooner Michael Bublé has announced he will be coming
home. As part of his Canadian Tour, Bublé will play Vancouver’s GM
Place on January 12, 2008 with proceeds from ticket sales to benefi t
literacy and the Raise-A-Reader campaign.

ensational holiday outfi ts start in the boudoir,
with sexy little bras, camisoles, panties, and
legwear. European women know the value of
investing in the best quality of lingerie available and
spare no expense. In terms of ultimate lingerie,
the name on everyone’s lips is Austrian-based
Wolford. Exquisite lace and fabrics, legwear that
is ultimately seductive, whether in tights, stayups,
or stockings with a garter belt, will be your little
secret for the party. The Wolford boutique at
Burrard and Alberni is the destination for ultimate
underpinnings.
Going glam
Luxurious, glamorous, and seductive, nothing comes to mind more easily than fur.
Fur today is far different from the fur of your grandmother’s Persian lamb coat, which
was stiff and heavy and in terms of contemporary styling, rather one-dimensional.
Contemporary fur is sexy, cut into practical styles for outerwear and for casual times as
well as fashioned for grand entrances. It is sheared, printed, dyed into fabulous colours,
trimmed with extravagant furs and bejeweled for nighttime elegance.
Pappas Furs of Vancouver offers both residents and visitors to the city a cornucopia
of designer furs including the house label. “We sell sheared mink, rex chinchilla
and sable, some fox if it is not too thick and bulky,” along with other furs, says
Constantine Pappas, who adds that the ultra-lightweight, high-fashion styles are
suitable for the west coast climate. Fur stoles, scarves, capes and fur-trimmed
gloves are also popular he says.
Imagine throwing on a light-as-a-feather 3/4 coat printed in stripes and cinching the
waist with a wide belt. Or pairing your designer jeans with a lovely little sheared
beaver jacket dyed blue with a lynx collar. Pure daytime chic. And for that formal
evening, top an ankle-length dress or two-piece palazzo pants outfi t with a snuggly
honey-coloured bolero with a fox collar. All Canadian of course.
Revving up your glamour quotient is simpler than you might think. Take a page from Coco Chanel’s stylebook. This legendary designer who set so many
trends and turned fashion as it was known on its pretty little head, was daring and unconventional. She had a magnifi cent collection of jewels and pearls
given to her by her many lovers including several dukes, and unabashedly
mixed them with her own costume jewellery. No one before had even thought
of pairing costly gems with glass stones. The effect was original and very
chic.
So take your little black dress, that workhorse of the wardrobe, and mix
up your beautiful pearls with a sparkling necklace of Swarovski crystals, or
cocktail ring to fi nish off a luxurious pendant of diamonds and gold. Walk on
the wild side.
Dyrberg/Kern, Denmark’s most famous design house of costume jewellery
puts together two collections a year, which it sells throughout the world.
Designers Gitte Dyrberg and Henning Kern pay meticulous detail to the
handmade pieces that refl ect architectural details of the great world capitols.
Big, bold, eye-catching necklaces, bracelets, rings, pendants and watches
are stunning add-ons to any holiday outfi t. The jewellery contains no lead or
nickel and is plated in silver, gold or copper. The Canadian fl agship store is
located at 3030 Granville St., and showcases the entire collection of women’s
wear and, more recently, added a line for men.
Dressing the part.
The upcoming holiday seasons is the perfect excuse to bring out the fi nery. Parties,
house gatherings, dining out, cocktails, big fundraising balls all call for something special
to wear. The seasonal offerings are simply singing with great looks. Metallics, texture,
draping, embroidery and beading elevate dressmaking to celestial heights. Chiffon,
taffeta, velvet, sequins, are the building blocks for a holiday wardrobe. In addition
to basic black, dress racks are humming with colour. At Holt Renfrew shoppers can
brouse through the fashions of designer Arthur Mendonca. His clean designs, many
of which have waist emphasis are executed in bold colours such as the papal purple
he uses without apology. Venture to South Granville and at Bacci, holiday dressing is
selected for the avant garde woman. Labels including Dries Van Noten, Chloé, and
Sophie Kokosalaki are leading European collections. Jenny Packham of London, is one
designer adored by the stars including Halle Berry, Beyonce, Helena Christensen and
Elizabeth Hurley. Her dresses see a long of milage on the red carpet. Vetrina has several
dresses by Jenny Packham in the boutique including a magnifi cent long chartreuse chiffon
evening dress with waist embroidery and one with a sheer embroidered bodice and
a full bias skirt of bands of colourful patterns.
At left: Norway’s Oleana knitwear is legendary in Europe, exclusive to Urbanity in Gastown.
When the red carpet is rolled up and the nighttime activities revolve around the hearth, Norway’s Oleana
is the order of the night. Sweaters taking their inspiration from the most beautiful global designs of
architecture, ceramics and textiles are a sophisticated and practical way in which to dress for relaxing
moments. Made from pure merino wool, silk and alpaca, these wonderful fashion items are available
exclusively in Vancouver at Urbanity on Abbott Street in Gastown. European elegance so suited for winter
evenings on the west coast!
Great style is learning how to defi ne who you are. The women of history who left legends of their style behind long after their lifetimes did not follow.
They led. Defi ning your own style rather than copycat looks is an art. Some women seems to have “it” and always command attention for their little
twists on the obvious. Step off the predictable runway and seek out sources for individual expression. Located on West 6 th Avenue a half block
west of Granville is The Silk Project, an amazing little boutique fi lled with dramatic fashions and jewellery designed by Joanna Staniszkis. Staniszkis
is a textile designer with an international reputation whose commissioned art works hang in prominent buildings around the world, and for the past
fi ve years she has turned her attention to creating beautiful fashions.
Coats, jackets, tops, and scarves are given texture due to hand printing, dying and pleating. The various techniques she uses result in amazing,
one-of-a-kind and limited- edition wearable art. Iridescent, translucent, opaque, and multi-coloured, whatever the effect the artist desires is achieved
through her unique approach to textile treatment.
Staniszkis uses only natural fi bres for her fashions including silk, pashmina and mohair. The results of her talent - truly magnifi cent outfi ts for a
never-to-be forgotten entrance. And for those who want to leave before the party is over, a stunning exit.

WEST VANCOUVER
Even though the Real Estate Board reported a record number of detached
as well as people coming into Greater Vancouver from other areas. Our data indicates that the majority are purchasing a principal residence,” says REBGV president
Brian Naphtali.
NORTH VANCOUVER
North Vancouver Market Comment
At the end of September 2007, the average prices in North Vancouver City
and District had increased approximately 11% from the previous year.
Demand is high for these desirable areas, and continues to outpace the
number of listings required for a balanced market. From Jan. 1 to Sept. 30
of this year, the number of sales of attached homes and apartments was
up over the same period in 2006, while the number of sales of detached
homes fell slightly. We congratulate the City of North Vancouver for winning
the inaugural “Green City” award for cities in B.C. with a population of
The Real Estate Board reports an increase in September 2007 over the
Interior design and more specifi cally kitchen design are crucial factors
in the compact homes of today. In places like Europe and New York,
where space is at a premium, great advances have been made in
cabinet and appliance design, allowing smaller kitchens to function as
well as the typical larger suburban kitchen.
The Canadian kitchen is usually the most functional, social and productive
room in the home. Even your typical condo kitchen, no matter how small,
By Dave Boulanger
The Ultimate
Kitchen
DESIGNER TIPS
hosts all kinds of activities. This is because of the multi-tasking that is
common in our daily lives. Whether you’re a soccer mom or a busy
executive, the kitchen ends up being the room where you have your laptop
on the counter, your cell phone on your shoulder and a meal in some
stage of progress. The Canadian kitchen, long referred to as the “heart
of the home,” has become the “nerve centre of the home.” It’s the place
you spend time interacting with family, plan meals, order meals, consult with
partners, solve problems, think fast on your feet and entertain. Therefore,
www.thevlist.com | THE V LIST | WINTER 07 | 45

DESIGNER TIPS
the design of the kitchen requires a great deal of forethought, expertise
and planning.
Due to the importance of the kitchen and its design, a homeowner might
consult with a professional interior designer or architect. This professional is
likely able to provide you with a good plan for the kitchen using their experience
in home and renovation design. However, because the kitchen industry is
ever-evolving and sees new advances every year, many interior designers
and architects will refer their client to a specialized kitchen designer who is
tuned to the kitchen options available on the market today.
The professional kitchen designer often works in kitchen showrooms and
kitchen showcases and can have a range of experience from sales to a
broad design background. Salespersons in large discount stores or higher
volume kitchen stores are more likely to have sales experience than design
experience. A high-end kitchen studio is more likely to have a kitchen
design professional on staff who has knowledge of both functional and
esthetic design. The true kitchen designer is going to be more focused
on how you live, how you cook and how you want your place to look. A
kitchen designer who also has experience as an interior designer can help
you plan the design of the kitchen along with the décor of the surrounding
spaces and rooms.
There is a big trend toward incorporating home offi ce functions into the
kitchen, with a computer or a television included in the layout. We shouldn’t
be surprised, since the “nerve centre” is where we spend the most time.
Here are some tips to assist you when you are thinking about the design
of your kitchen:
Look at the kitchen designer’s portfolio and conduct an interview
to determine if that designer is most suited to your needs. The
kitchen design process becomes very intimate and the designer
needs to know how you live and what kind of décor suits you
best.
The professional kitchen designer can assist you in designing
before you move toward purchasing your cabinetry and
appliances and hiring your contractor. A high-end kitchen studio
will offer these services on contract, and they are frequently used
by interior designers and architects in the early planning stage of
a new home or large scale renovation. By involving the kitchen
designer at an early stage, the client benefi ts from their knowledge
of appliances, layout, and available products, ensuring the best
function and esthetics.
Hiring the kitchen designer early in the process also helps you
avoid costly mistakes.
Think carefully about the appliances you will be using. Some
appliances can actually save space in your home. A good trick
for small kitchens is to use the fully integrated SubZero fridge,
which is paneled to match the cabinetry. These fridges can be
great space savers as well as beautiful and functional.
Look at multi-functioning ovens designed in Europe. Miele
46 | THE V LIST | WINTER 07 | www.thevlist.com
produces a small unit that can bake, broil and microwave. Check
out steam oven options for healthy cooking alternatives as well.
Consider low-maintenance countertops and backsplashes
that are easier to clean and more hygienic. Granite has been a
longstanding favourite in the industry and still offers incredible
benefi ts and esthetics. Also take the time to research Quartz
counter tops such as Caesarstone and Hanstone. These
products are granite-like in consistency but offer other benefi ts as
well, such as anti-microbial composition, and colour and pattern
consistency.
Look into the higher-end European-made cabinetry. Some
brands offer German engineering and others offer Italian style. If
you can combine the German quality with the Italian style, you've
got a beautiful kitchen that will last for a lifetime, enrich your life
and also signifi cantly increase the resale value of your home.
Think about how the design of your kitchen will affect your daily
living as well as the mood in your home. A dark kitchen is great
for luxurious evening entertaining but is it too dreary for the
Vancouver winter? A white kitchen can be nice and bright but
is it too trendy or just not your style? A good timeless kitchen
design will transcend the trends and look fresh for many years.
Don't focus too much on the resale factor when choosing your
cabinetry. A wonderful designer kitchen will always be most
appreciated by home buyers. Sometimes people focus too much
on resale and choose a cabinet style they think will follow the
trends. But remember that trends come and go, so your kitchen
may end up dated by the time you sell. A well-designed, beautiful
kitchen that functions like a well-engineered machine will really
benefi t your home when it’s time to sell. Perhaps you might think
the red kitchen is too radical for someone else. But if the red
kitchen works for you, it’s most likely going to work for the person
who buys your home.
Consider extra luxuries like built-in coffee makers and cappuccino
machines. With the coffee lifestyle so ingrained into our culture,
the built-in coffee maker is becoming more and more common,
especially in high-end kitchens. The built-in coffee makers
today offer everything from multi-bean options to fully plumbedin
models that are always ready to go. Most models now are
self-cleaning, and thus very low-maintenance. A true luxury is
the invention of the Nespresso coffee maker which is set up to
make fi ve fl avours of coffee. This machine allows you to pre-load
preferences for your family and guests. The Nespresso maker
from Miele includes everything you need to steam milk and
prepare the ultimate cappuccino or latte.
Flooring options in today's kitchen range from laminates at the
lower end to marble and granite at the high end. Hardwood
fl oors are now more suited to kitchens than ever before due

to better and harder fi nishes. In high-traffi c family kitchens, it’s
better to consider higher-end fl ooring options such as beautiful
porcelain tiles, slate, marble, granite and cork.
Lighting is now much more of a focus than ever before in
kitchens. Thankfully, the fl uorescent fi xture is becoming more
rare, with most newer kitchens incorporating low-voltage undercabinet
lighting, recessed halogen pot lighting and halogen
pendant lights over tables and islands. The lighting design
of any kitchen will have a direct effect on the success of the
design. Shadowed areas and dark corners will always aggravate
users and harsh fl uorescent lighting is not good for any desired
esthetic effect. Put a great deal of thought into the lighting plan
for your new kitchen so that you have long-term enjoyment night
and day in your kitchen.
Consider the "green" aspect of your design. Are you donating
your old cabinets to charity? Does your new kitchen use low offgassing
materials or fast-growth trees? These questions should
come into play when you are considering a new kitchen.
DESIGNER TIPS
Look into newer cooking and frying options on the market
today. If you're a gas lover but you own a condo or house
that is not conducive to gas, consider the new induction cook
tops. Miele offers a fi ve-burner model with very high heat options
as well as low simmer. Wolf makes induction cook tops, again
engineered to be earth-friendly as well as functional. Consider
a wok burner in your kitchen if stir-fry is an important element in
your cooking. These wok burners offer incredible convenience.
With the shortage of trades people available for smaller jobs,
remember to ask your kitchen designer if they can recommend
someone. It may be that their contacts know about the new
appliance load requirements and complexity of installation.
Most of all, enjoy the process of planning. Yes, we all want it
yesterday, but good planning and patience will result in the kitchen
that you will love for many years. They are big investments but the
payoff is signifi cant.
ancouver recently had a taste of how sports superstars captivate
youth, media and sports fans. David Beckham joined his team The
L.A.Galaxy and came to play Vancouver’s own Whitecaps in an exhibition
game. Forty-eight thousand fans piled into BC Place Stadium to see the
megastar play. Vancouver was on its best behaviour, even providing a
streaker, a marriage proposal and a fan attack. Can’t wait for the 2010
Olympics.
Sports superstars and Olympians inspire youth.
Vancouver was not the only ones glued to the television during the Olympics
in 1984. Watching Katarina Witt, the German fi gure skater glide across
the ice kept us captivated. In 1988, we cheered as she won the gold
medal for the second time in singles fi gure skating. Katarina’s fl irtatious
style and showmanship inspired many. Even if the child was not a skater,
mothers given the opportunity could use her as an example whenever they
would grumble about practicing turns and barre work in ballet class. The
memories of Katarina’s effortless performance gives hope that perhaps
through practice, they themselves could become a great performer.
Winter Games (VANOC) will affect today’s youth. Although tickets do not
go on sale until October 2008, the anticipation is growing.
VANOC announced that half of all the tickets are priced at less than $100
and 100, 000 tickets are priced at $25. Hopefully youth and children will
be affected positively by VANOC following through on its commitment to
make sure every Canadian will have the opportunity to see an Olympic
event if they choose to.
“Attending the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, and sharing gold
medal moments with Canadian athletes and international competitors,
will be unforgettable,” explained John Furlong, VANOC Chief Executive
Offi cer. “It’s about much more than the ticket – it’s the entire Olympic
experience that will likely not come our way in Canada for many years to
come. It’s about standing shoulder to shoulder and singing O Canada with
fellow Canadians you have never met but with whom you are family for one
incredible day. These are experiences that will remain with you for the rest
of your life and today we are delivering on our promise to make that unique

OLYMPICS 2010
Olympic experience available to anyone who wants to be there. Our goal is
to ensure every venue is full.”
According to Furlong, “…young people are lining up and looking at the
Games. This is why we have to be so good and this is why we have
to make it possible for everybody to get inside what we’re doing.” He
shares a story about a young girl who approached him to tell him about her
Olympic dream. “She is saving every penny,” told Furlong. “She’s cutting
grass, doing dishes for money, begging, and borrowing every penny she
can fi nd because in her heart, she wants to go to every sport one time.”
The strong work ethic that this girl demonstrates is only one example of how
the upcoming 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games is affecting youth.
VANOC believes that education is an integral piece of the upcoming events. To
help educators and students prepare for this, /EDU has been launched.
“As the Host Province of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter
Games, BC is pleased to support /EDU because school is a great place
to learn about the Games, sport and fi tness, culture and the arts, and
sustainable living” said Honourable Shirley Bond, Minister of Education
from British Columbia. “This has been a commendable cooperative effort
between VANOC and all of Canada’s provinces and territories that can
benefi t Canada and every student, teacher and school in the country.”
“Canada has a history as an innovator in Olympic and Paralympic education
and as a leader in developing online learning and resources for teachers,” said
Terry Wright, on behalf of VANOC. “I’m pleased to be able to say that /EDU is
the fi rst-ever fully online, interactive Olympic and Paralympic Games program.”
“Vancouver 2010 creates a climate of possibility that helps us discover the
greatness inside ourselves,” said John Furlong, VANOC Chief Executive
Offi cer. “Through the Vancouver 2010 website, /EDU will connect students
to students, teachers to teachers and schools to schools from across
Canada. It will provide them with Olympic and Paralympic resources to
help them set their own podiums and identify their own dreams.”
Furlong is right. It is already happening. That little girl who is saving every
penny so she can purchase tickets to attend every event, is growing into a
leader of tomorrow.

PEOPLE
PROFILE
Q&A with Dawn Chubai: Host of Breakfast Television
and Realty Television, Jazz Vocalist and Actress
V: I must give you kudos. You are a super woman. You host two shows
- Breakfast Television and Realty Television on CityTV. You also are an
accomplished jazz singer and act. Plus you are married! How do you
make time to do everything that you do so well?
Dawn: Well, now that you put it that way - I guess I AM pretty busy - but
honestly, I have such a great life, a great husband and I love what I do. I
have been a Jazz Vocalist and Broadcaster for quite some time now. The
acting is new for me - so yes - it all keeps me busy but it isn’t overwhelming.
It’s ALL good!
V: Have there been times when it has been diffi cult to balance the shows,
singing and acting careers? How did you deal with it?
Dawn: I am fortunate that City TV has been extremely supportive in
my other endeavors (singing and acting) ...but there does have to be a
balance - my priority is Breakfast Television, and being able to get up
at 4am every weekday. So what I do during the week, whether it is a
personal commitment or a work event has to take that into account. I often
host charity and community events that usually take place on a weeknight
- that’s ok though - it’s worth being a little tired the next day if I know I have
helped raise money for a great cause!
V: What do you do during your down time?
Dawn: Sleep.
V: How do you incorporate a healthy lifestyle into your schedule?
Dawn: It is a conscious (and constant!!) effort. Sometimes I am so
exhausted after a show that all I want to do is sleep. So I do. And when
I wake up from my nap, I suck it up and drag myself to the gym. I like to
think my excuse of getting up early is justifi cation for being too tired (lazy)
to work out. But you know everyone has a “thing”, a reason to not do
something. Mine is that I get up early. For others they have 3 kids to take
care of. You just have to make the time. Make your health a priority.
V: You are a fantastic role model to children and young women. There
are several charities and fundraising events that raise funds and work with
youth that you support - The Variety Club, Children’s Wish Foundation,
and Big Sisters? What made you decide to focus on youth and young
women?
Dawn: The appeal to help other women is so natural, I can relate. With
Children, it’s more about giving them the best possible chance in life. To
Dawn: Is it possible to change someone’s life or to inspire them doing
interesting how people are affected by what we do. The feedback I get the
V: What inspires you and keeps you going?
Dawn: Career-wise, knowing that I’m part of something (BT) that’s really
U
topia: a place of ideal perfection. Awni Abu-Ulba, founder and
president of Spa Utopia and Salon, always dreamed of creating a
‘utopia.’ For years he imagined a place where he could welcome guests
with gentleness and perfection, where the surroundings were tranquil,
serene and elegant. In this place, only the highest of ethical standards for
service, quality and integrity would be practised by the staff.
In 2001, Awni’s dream was realized and the fi rst Spa Utopia and Salon
was created in Langley. Awni, a hairstylist, described his vision and passion
of this place called ‘Utopia’ to one of his loyal clients, Janet Colello, and
thus began a successful partnership between them. Awni and his wife
Sherri, as well as Janet and her husband Ross would set out to make the
dream a reality.
Awni and his architect David Dannyluck of Langley, B.C. understood the
importance of detail, colour and texture. The Spa environment that Awni had
envisioned would appeal to all of the fi ve senses. Bringing these ideas and
elements together, Spa Utopia and Salon style would replicate ancient
54 | THE V LIST | WINTER 07 | www.thevlist.com
Rome with components of modern architecture and building standards.
The inviting space would include cascading water features and towering
pillars, dark winding corridors and quiet candle-lit corners. The objective of
the engaging design was to attract guests to the Spa that was so uniquely
beautiful that they would want to return time and time again. The design
proved to be calming, tranquil and appealing to both men and women.
For such an impressive and elaborate architecturally designed space it was
clear that an interior decorator who understood the concept and passion was
necessary. Elly Pauls of Studio One was chosen to carry the vision of the
design through to the fi nal touches including natural stone tile, warm earthy
colors for the textured walls, rich luxurious fabrics, comfortable and inviting
furnishings and accents. The use of soft candlelight adorned the fi replace
mantles and Roman statues would create images of times long ago.
While building Spa Utopia and Salon in Langley, Awni would acquire new
partners, Levi and Lorel Giesbreckt. The Giesbreckts easily understood
his vision and enthusiasm.

In February 2002 the fi rst Spa Utopia and
Salon opened in Langley, British Columbia. It
was soon evident that a second location was
possible. A wonderful and very desirable new
location became available in North Vancouver.
In a central part of the North Shore close to the
water, this location had it all: views of the city of
Vancouver and the snow-covered North Shore
mountains. It was then that the Utopia Group
would bring in their fi nal major shareholders, Ben
and Dorcas Sawatsky.
“To create a space where guests would come
to rest, relax and rejuvenate, passion needs to
be present in the design, services and staff,”
says Awni. “The enthusiasm and love for people
is what really created Spa Utopia and Salon.
Every pillar, every stone, every turn and corner
was built with the guest’s experience in mind.”
The spa and salon services were created and
practised by all the staff for hours with the greatest
of care before they would service a Utopia guest.
The philosophy is that the environment and services
go hand in hand; you cannot have one without the
other. Awni believes so strongly in the consistency
of exceptional care and treatment that every guest
would only receive the very best upon visiting
one of his spas. The Utopia Group knew only the
highest standards of training and education for
the staff would create the results that their guests
would demand and expect. Strict protocols would
be a must for all the staff to achieve the goals
of the environment and level of service that was
expected.
In April 2004, Spa Utopia and Salon Group
were invited to open their third location at the Pan
Pacifi c Hotel, Vancouver. Awni echoed his desire
and passion to create yet another masterpiece,
this time in a fi ve-diamond destination property
welcoming local, national and international
guests to experience his vision.
Spa Utopia and Salon is renowned worldwide
for its design, services and quality and was voted
Best Chain Spa and Best Destination Spa in
2007. It is certain that architectural designs from
the past, the impeccable services and the warm
welcome will continue to provide busy guests
with a sense of tranquility and a local haven of
utopia.

ENVIRONMENT
Danger in the Forest
T
rees have always featured prominently in British Columbia’s image of
itself - in art, popular culture, and tourism marketing. But it’s easy for
urban dwellers to think of the forestry industry as something remote and
irrelevant to their lives.
Yet the sector is one of the province’s largest contributors to health care
and education through taxes and stumpage fees. So it’s not only small
Interior and coastal communities that rely on the strength of the industry,
it’s all of us.
The British Columbian lumber industry is now facing what Rick Doman calls
a “perfect storm,” a number of unfortunate regional, national, and global
events that together could be disastrous. Along with the strong Canadian
dollarthe industry is also doing its best against the debilitating effects of
high freight prices and a sharp downturn in the U.S. housing market which
means low housing starts and thus decreased demand and low prices for
lumber. On top of these, the B.C. Interior has watched the destruction of
millions of hectares of forest because of the mountain pine beetle.
Mr. Doman, a former CEO of Doman Industries and Western Forest
Products, now works as a consultant in the forestry industry, specializing
in the area of corporate restructuring. “The weakness I see in the Canadian
industry is that they didn’t prepare for the growing global economy, and
instead they focused on the U.S. and Japanese markets,” he says. “Now
the U.S. economy has taken a drastic downturn, and there is too much
competition out there from other countries who were better at understanding
the global economy.”
Just over a decade ago Canada was a dominating force in the world
lumber market. Its position has slipped for many reasons including the
rise of alternative products like engineered wood. Mr. Doman insists there
is reason for optimism, but radical steps must be taken to ensure the
sustainability of our forests and viability of the lumber industry. But fi rst,
how did the industry arrive in the eye of this “perfect storm?”
It seems that some factors such as the weakened U.S. greenback are
beyond control. And yet, he points out, some countries like Finland, Sweden,
and Norway, have better weathered these waters by looking ahead and
preparing themselves. Many companies in these countries did a good job
of hedging their annual revenue. They started aggressively several years
ago when their currency was trading as low as 85 Euros to the U.S. dollar,
and continued this policy as the Euro strengthened. Now that the Euro has
soared above $1.40 those companies have lessened their currency risk by
hedging. These European countries have also explored new niche markets
in the Middle East, India and China, another strategy which has paid off.
58 | THE V LIST | WINTER 07 | www.thevlist.com
Canadian companies, Mr. Doman says, should have taken similar steps.
Other countries such as Brazil and Chile have also stepped into the pulp
and paper markets. With advantages such as low production costs and
a fast-growing eucalyptus tree that matures every seven years, South
American countries have also been able to compete in the lumber and
pulp and paper industries.
Added to all these woes is another factor, the hungry little mountain pine
beetle, whose devastating impact was vastly underestimated. David Suzuki
recently estimated that the bug, whose destruction of pine trees has led to
clearcuts in many areas of Interior B.C., has cost the province $65 billion,
a fi gure that could grow to $240 billion. Up to 40 per cent of the entire
annual allowable cut in the Interior will be lost over the next decade until
the next generation of trees replaces it, a period of about 70 years. Here
again, Mr. Doman thinks that more foresight would have mitigated the harm
on many small forest-dependent communities.
The blue-stained wood infested by pine beetles can still be sold, but
generally only within fi ve years of its harvest. In order to make use of it,
the provincial government has allowed signifi cant clearcuts and reduced
stumpage fees, which are paid by logging companies to harvest logs
from public lands. The reduced stumpage fees likely aggravated the U.S.
softwood lumber dispute with Canada. Mr. Doman wishes the government
had raised those fees and put the money in a fund to help communities
plan for the lean years ahead. This also may have resolved the softwood
lumber dispute in 2001. “Those losses could have been offset by a better
policy,” he says. “My concern now is those communities will continue to
be negatively impacted for years to come, when more saw mills and pulp
mills curtail production and eventually shut down.”
He also questions whether the clearcutting is being done in a sustainable
way. There is an alternative for the glut of wood that generates more
revenue for the province: bio-mass, a form of energy. Lastly, he wonders,
will the government start funding research into a new species of beetleresistant
seedlings?
Looking ahead, Mr. Doman sees some relief. He feels the Canadian dollar
may likely come down to a more trade-friendly level over the next year. The
U.S. housing market will also likely rebound within a few years, creating
more demand for lumber. Prices will probably rise, given the decreased
supply of wood. But these factors, he insists, must not be assumed to be
enough to guarantee the sustainability of our once-dominant industry. “In
my view, the industry has been asleep at the wheel,” he says. “We must
prepare now so that we don’t become a country that exports raw logs and
imports fi nished lumber.”

THE NEW QUATTROPORTE AUTOMATIC
“A Modern Masterpiece”
—Automobile Magazine
INTRODUCING THE NEW 2007 QUATTROPORTE AUTOMATIC
When Automobile Magazine named the Maserati Quattroporte a “Modern Masterpiece” they were referring to more
than its elegant styling. The Quattroporte features a number of elegant engineering advancements as well, including its
all-new ZF 6-speed automatic transmission. It is the highest-revving automatic available in a luxury sedan, delivering
superior responsiveness from the Quattroporte’s 400 hp Ferrari-engineered V8. It’s also the only automatic luxury sedan
engineered with a rearward weight bias to deliver a driving experience so responsive and balanced that evo Magazine
named the Quattroporte “the best handling supersedan on the planet.” For a personalized introduction to the new
Quattroporte Automatic visit your authorized dealer, Ferrari Maserati of Vancouver now or call 604-215-8778. www.fmov.ca
