Northwest Basketry Guild Board meeting minutes Date: October 12, 2008, Location: Seattle Shoreline Library Branch Meeting called to order at 1:47 pm Board members present: Mary Auld, Katherine Lewis, Karen Brattesani, Miggie Keuler, Sally Anaya, Johanna Mandt, Marcee Charlshe, Massy Anaya, , Sharle Osborne, Elaine Twogood Board members absent: Sheila Wray Guests: Alex Keggan Recording Secretary Report – Sharle Osborne. Minutes from last Board meeting reviewed. Motion 1: Motion to approve the minutes. MSP Hanna, Mary Auld Corresponding Secretary Report – Karen Brattesani. Karen has few more new members. Memberships arriving after October 1 will be credited to the next year. Treasurer Report – Hanna Mandt. Hanna gave a full treasurers report. Income $46,004.43; Expenses $43,052.20; Checking $13,662.39; Savings $20,513.98 The total of unencumbered funds is $20,591.31. Expenses for August Basketry day were discussed. Cost this year was $1442.82 Reimbursement for expenses need to arrive at the treasurer within the calendar year. Hanna will check to see what percentage was charged for sales at Regional Basketry Day. Memberships are up. Any profit from workshops goes back into encumbered funds toward workshops. Massy will investigate changing to a different storage unit. A move would facilitate cleaning out the unit. Board Meeting dates for 2008-2009: January 11, 2009 2:00pm, TBD-Seattle Northeast Library; March 19, 2009 TBD – Spring Retreat Unfinished Business: Board of Directors Handbook & Training Manual – Elaine Twogood & Karen Brattesani – Membership/ directory portion was updated and is consistent with current practices. They will review issues requiring bylaw changes and present at future meetings. There is now no training manual, instead the Standing Rules published in the handbook with the directory and bylaws. A Bylaws committee was suggested. Proposed changes in bylaws and Standing rules will be sent to Karen and Elaine and brought to the next board meeting for consideration. eNewletter status and eCommunication - Marcee Charlshe. Marcee has taken training on using Access. There are issues with the current enewsletter through the provider. Solutions were suggested and will be explored by Massy. Grant proposal-tabled Find new Board members for 2009 – Massy Anaya. There will be an article in the newsletter. Give names to Massy of any members who would be good to have on the board. There will be at least three openings this coming year. Final Report - Basket Day – Mary Irvine & Katherine Lewis. Moving the date to August was discussed. Final Report - Nancy Moore Bess Workshop –Sally Anaya. Workshop was successful. Several recommendations were discussed. Final Report - Jackie Abrams Workshop - Sally Anaya. The workshop was a great success with 9 participants. Materials left over will be auctioned at retreat. Motion 3: It was moved to reimburse the one class registrant unable to attend due to a medical emergency. MSP Elaine/Katherine Regional Basket Day (Nov 22) – Mary Irvine & Katherine Lewis & Sharle Osborne. All classes will be a go. Thirty students have already registered. More publicity, especially locally, will follow. Summer Weave (Jun 11-14, 2009) – Sally Anaya. Ads for Summer Weave will appear in Newsletter and at Retreat. Final deadline will be March 31 st . New Business: Teacher Compensation – Irvine, Mandt, Samdahl, Anaya. Proposed Teacher Payment Policy was reviewed with the revision of $7 from $8 for student per hour class fee. The proposed changes are intended to greatly simplify the bookkeeping and will make the class fees fairer. Class size minimum will be six. Policies for compensation for classes below the minimum class size are outlined in the policy. Teacher compensation policy will be published in the guild Handbook in Standing Rules. Motion 2: The board moved to adopt the revised proposed teacher combination policy with the change of $8 to $7 for student hourly fee and the addition of ‘as a guideline’ to the Basketry Day class maximum. MSP Karen, Sally Spring Retreat Refund Policy – Retreat Committee Karen B. Cancellation Policy for Retreat was reviewed. The most recently revised edition was discussed and the new text will appear in the Spring Retreat Brochure. Motion 3: It was moved to adopt the revised Retreat Cancellation Policy with the changes: not listing examples of catastrophic events, no refunds without notification by telephone followed by written notification. MSP Hanna/Elaine Guild Show in conjunction with Snohomish County Arts Festival and the Northwest Designer Craftsmen – Katherine Lewis. Show opens Jan 9 th and runs through February 12 th , 2009 with an opening Friday, January 9 th from 5pm to 8pm in the Monte Christo Hotel in downtown Everett. Containers, Containment and Contents. We have a November 5 th deadline for applicants. Information for interested members will be in the newsletter and will be emailed from Marcee. Motion 4: To approve up to $500 from the encumbered show funds for the show. MSP Elaine, Sally Jan Hopkins is organizing an all day bus tour for January 9 th . Katherine is looking for a member interested in Demo on the evening of January 9 th . Membership forms- Katherine L. All need to agree with each other. Karen B and Katherine are coordinating so there will be a master membership form that will fit on the brochure. 2009 Budget – Mandt. Budget is being completed. Programs at Monthly meetings – Katherine L. Discussion followed. Join Seattle Weavers Guild – Sally will research joining the Seattle Weavers Guild. "Containers, Containment, and Contents" January 9, 2009 to February 12, 2009 at the Arts Council of Snohomish County, 1507 Wall St., Everett. The Arts Council of Snohomish County has offered the Northwest Basket Weavers Guild and Northwest Designer Craftsmen a joint art show at the Monte Cristo Hotel Lobby. Katherine is working on the show as a board member of the Northwest Basket Weavers Guild. This show coincides with the Bellevue Art Museum's show "Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and David Lieberman Collection". Both of these shows will provide an opportunity to see some of the best work in contemporary basketry. See how to enter below: Call to Artists: all current Northwest Basket Weavers guild members are encouraged to submit entries Show Title: “Containers, Containment and Contents” Theme: All baskets addressing the above show title. Miniatures are encouraged and will be in a protective enclosed case, other works will be displayed on pedestals, hung on walls or can be freestanding if appropriate. This show coincides with the Bellevue Art Museum’s show “Intertwined: Contemporary Baskets from the Sara and David Lieberman Collection”. This is a great opportunity to show your work. It is just around the corner with dead lines …but the Arts Council of Snohomish County delayed another show to give both memberships the opportunity to showcase their work in conjunction with the BAM exhibit. Labels will show which organization(s) the artist is in and will make for a more cohesive presentation and less stress for artists that are members of both organizations. It also mirrors the theme and the cooperation of the arts community in the BAM show. No photo of your work Send the other requested information by e-mail or regular mail, and bring the basket to the November 12 th guild meeting (we must still be notified of your intent by Nov. 5 th ). What to send: You may enter up to 5 pieces, selection of pieces will be made due to space available, and you will be notified by 11/15. Selection may be limited to one piece per artist depending on number of entries and space limitations. Image: preferably 300 dpi 4x6 digital image. We must have an image of this quality for use in show publicity. Include a photo credit if necessary for photos to be used in show publicity. If you have only a “snapshot” type image, this is adequate for show entry but will not be included in show publicity. If you have no photo image, you may submit the other information to us by Nov. 5 and bring the basket to the Nov.12 th meeting. Basket Information: Your name, Membership (NWBW, NWDC, both) Title of piece, Price of piece (we would prefer that works be for sale, but it is not required), (the Arts Council of Snohomish County will take a 35% commission of the price given for any sales made during the show), Size of piece, if this piece could/should hang on the wall, or be freestanding, please note that. Materials and description of technique used. We are looking for one artist to demonstrate during the opening reception. Are you interested This artist will be allowed to show and sell additional pieces of their work during the evening (subject to 35% commission as above).
