Attached you will find the senior course selection sheets for<br />

next year. Please go over these selection sheets with your teen<br />

and return the completed forms to the office immediately.<br />

Course Selection Sheets are due by Friday, April 15, <strong>2011</strong>.<br />

Please note the addition of several new courses over the past<br />

couple of years and the 4 new options for next year!<br />

In an effort to support the needs and wants of today’s savy<br />

students, our course calendar is constantly adapting. Our goal is<br />

to meet the needs and interests of the widest variety of students<br />

possible or help them take the courses they need to succeed in<br />

post-secondary education, the workplace, and LIFE!<br />

Students to engage in dramatic processes and the presentation of dramatic works, and emphasizes the<br />

application of drama skills in other contexts and opportunities.<br />

Worship Arts – Code:AEA301<br />

This course will emphasize the importance of the interrelationship between the arts and personal/spiritual<br />

development. Students will analyze and create a variety of approaches to worship, with the goal of preparing<br />

them for service in their church community.<br />

Law – Code:CLN4U1<br />

Students explore elements of Canadian law and the role of law in social, political, and global contexts.<br />

Religion – Code:HRE4M1<br />

The aim of this course is to assist students in understanding themselves as moral persons living the way of<br />

Christ through an examination Scripture, and the teachings of the <strong>Christian</strong> church.<br />

PLUS: Online courses are an option for students who need specific courses<br />

for entrance into post secondary programs. Contact the guidance office<br />

for specific details.


EXPERIENCE CO-OP!<br />

Cooperative Education is a unique learning opportunity that<br />

integrates classroom theory with practical experience in the<br />

workplace. It is based a partnership between the school and<br />

business. It involves the participation of students, teachers, and<br />

placement supervisors. Students are provided with valuable<br />

work experience involving:<br />

• the practical aspects of a career<br />

• the demands of employment<br />

• the expectations of employers in a changing work environment<br />

The training received at the business location and the learning at<br />

school complement each other and provide students with credits<br />

toward their graduation diploma.<br />

the educational process<br />

New Course Descriptions:<br />

ADA301 – This course requires students to engage in dramatic processes<br />

and the presentation of dramatic works, and emphasizes the application of<br />

drama skills in other contexts and opportunities. Students will interpret<br />

and present works in a variety of dramatic forms, create and script original<br />

works, and critically analyse the processes involved in processing drama<br />

works. Students will develop a variety of skills related to collaboration and<br />

the presentation of drama works.<br />

AEA301 – This course will emphasize the importance of the<br />

interrelationship between the arts and personal/spiritual development.<br />

Students will analyze and create a variety of approaches to worship, with<br />

the goal of preparing them for service in their church community.<br />

CLN4U1 - This course explores elements of Canadian law and the role of<br />

law in social, political, and global contexts. Students will learn about the<br />

connections between the historical and philosophical sources of law and<br />

issues in contemporary society. They will also learn to analyze legal issues,<br />

conduct independent research, and communicate the results of their<br />

inquiries in a variety of ways.<br />

HRE4M1 - This course has the aim of assisting students in understanding<br />

themselves as moral persons living the way of Christ through an<br />

examination of the revelation of sacred Scripture, and the teachings of the<br />

<strong>Christian</strong> church. It engages students in critical reflection on significant<br />

contemporary moral and ethical issues in light of Scripture, Church<br />

teaching, and their own experiences. Social and ecological justice issues<br />

are explored along with a study of topics that focus on <strong>Christian</strong> mercy and<br />

forgiveness. The graces and challenges of relationships, marriage, and<br />

family life are explored from a <strong>Christian</strong> perspective.


Diploma Requirements<br />

Ministry Requirements for Graduation and the Ontario Secondary Diploma:<br />

Compulsory Credits (Total 18)<br />

→ 4 credits in English<br />

→ 1 credit in the arts<br />

→ 1 credit in French as a second language<br />

→ 3 credits in Mathematics (one Senior Division)<br />

→ 2 credits in Science<br />

→ 1 credit in Canadian geography<br />

→ 1 credit in Civics and Career Studies<br />

→ 1 credit in Canadian history<br />

→ 1 credit senior sciences OR 1 credit technology<br />

→ 1 credit in English, third language, social science OR<br />

Canadian and world studies<br />

→ 1 credit in physical and health education<br />

→ 1 credit of physical education, music, art, drama, dance OR<br />

business/entrepreneurial studies<br />

AND<br />

* Elective Credits (total of <strong>12</strong>);<br />

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR STUDENTS AT WOODLAND CHRISTIAN HIGH SCHOOL:<br />

In addition to the courses required to complete diploma requirements,<br />

all students will take Biblical Studies in Grade 9 and 10 as a normal part of their<br />

timetable and they will take two of four "Worldview" courses World Issues<br />

Geography (CGW4U1), Family Studies (HHS4M1), History (CHW3M1 or<br />

CHY4U/C1), and/or Media (EMS3O1)] in their senior years.<br />

NOTES:<br />

1. Community Involvement: As part of diploma requirements, students are expected to complete<br />

40 hours of volunteer service in their communities. This requirement reflects our belief that we<br />

are called by God to work, not only for our own good but also in the service of others. The<br />

Guidance department administers the records for community involvement. Students are<br />

expected to obtain the necessary forms and information there.<br />

2. Literacy Test: The Provincial Test of Reading and Writing is written by all grade ten students<br />

and it is based on the expectations of the curriculum to the end of grade nine. The successful<br />

completion of this test is a requirement for graduation. If students do not complete the test<br />

successfully in grade ten, they will be provided with remedial assistance and with the<br />

opportunity to retake the test at a later date. Under special circumstances, accommodations,<br />

deferrals and exemptions may be provided for some students.<br />
