Do You Have a Friend or Relative who is Unemployed
Unemployment affects relationships with family members and the person who is no longer employed. How
people seek jobs today is very different from in the past, and oftentimes relatives and friends don’t
understand those changes. They struggle with what to say, or how to offer support, when they may be
feeling lost and uncertain as well. If someone you care about is unemployed, you are invited to attend an
evening of support on October 11, from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m., at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish, 7820
Beechmont Ave. (Heritage Hall West). For more information or to register, please contact Sandy Keiser at
From the Community Service Office
Dear Parents,
I am excited to announce UA’s Service Trips for the Summer of 2012! This upcoming summer, Ursuline
will offer two unique and eye-opening service trips for students:
Pine Ridge Reservation, South Dakota, June 23 rd -June 29 th , 2012
$800 per student, includes all transportation, housing, and meals.
The Oglala Lakota people are some of the poorest citizens in our nation. With the unemployment rate at
90%, it is no wonder that the life expectancy on Pine Ridge is the second lowest in the Western Hemisphere
only to Haiti. A third world country within our own borders, Pine Ridge is a community stricken with
poverty but blessed with a rich and inspiring culture.
This UA service trip will work with Re-Member, a non-profit agency located directly on the reservation.
Service work will include painting, hauling wood, insulating trailers, and various construction projects as
needed. The agency provides education throughout the week including nightly local speakers and a tour of
the reservation. Participants will visit the site of the Massacre at Wounded Knee, eat lunch with Black Elk’s
great granddaughter and learn extensively about the Lakota people’s history and culture. Students are not
required to have construction knowledge prior to visiting South Dakota. Re-Member teaches basic
construction skills to their volunteers and only assigns service work that aligns with the ability levels of their
visitors.
Washington, DC, July 7th-July 14th, 2012
$375 per student, includes all transportation, housing, and meals
This trip merges community service, advocacy and education centering on the issue of the wealth gap in the
United States. We will work with NETWORK, a Catholic Social Justice Lobby, and other local non-profit
agencies in the region. Participants will explore the many ways an individual can make a difference: in
serving, advocating, and learning a bit about what lobbyists do, too. We will work with a variety of service
agencies and NETWORK throughout the week. While the trip focuses on wealth inequalities, the greater
goal is to teach students about the variety of ways they can make a difference and let their voices be heard -
regardless of the issue!
A parent must attend one of the information sessions about the summer service trips in order for his or her
daughter to be eligible to apply. I will discuss and address both of the service trips at the meetings. Attached
to the end of this week’s Rapport is a flyer advertising these mandatory information sessions. At the meeting,
I will cover details including expectations for the trip, the application process, and trip payment schedules.
Your daughter is invited and encouraged to attend the meeting with you. Summer Service Trips are open for
students who will return to Ursuline the following year. Unfortunately, graduating seniors (Class of 2012)
are not eligible for UA Service Trips.
Info sessions are scheduled for:

The following 2 articles were recently released to the press:
Ursuline senior makes perfect ACT score
Cincinnati, OH – September 29, 2011: Ursuline Academy senior Marisa Reddy has achieved a perfect
score of 36 on the 2011 ACT test. Reddy, daughter of Drs. Usha and Pramod Reddy of Indian Hill, is also a
2012 National Merit Semi-Finalist. Her other memberships and activities include National Honor Society,
the Academic Team, Student Council, Model UN, Ursuline Academy United, Writing Tutor, Peers as
Leaders, Mock Trial, Spanish Honor Society, co-editor of the student newspaper. Her awards include:
Christian Awareness Scholar, Spanish I Scholar, English II Scholar, World Civilizations History Scholar, AP
US History-Junior Scholar, AP Spanish Scholar, Christian Leadership-designated by classmates; First place
on the Oesper Chemistry Test, designated a "Chemistry All-Star" by the American Chemical Society for
placement on the Oesper test, Gold Medal on National Spanish Exam levels 3 and 4, Ursuline Academy
Merit Scholarship, Susan B. Anthony and Frederick Douglas Award. In addition, she has been nominated
this year for the University of Virginia Jefferson Scholars Award. Outside of the classroom, Reddy and her
sisters have been working for the past few years on a project they call "A Stitch Just in Time," wherein they
collect sutures from Cincinnati Children's Hospital and private donors to send to the Mediciti Hospital in
Hyderbad, India. She also has been a volunteer in the research department of the Neonatalogy Division at
Cincinnati Children's Hospital; and she has a red belt and will soon have her black belt in Tae Kwon Do
with the Cincinnati Tae Kwon Do Academy. Reddy has not yet made a decision on where she will attend
college.
“It comes as no surprise to those of us at Ursuline Academy who have had the privilege of working
with Marisa Reddy over the past three years that Marisa scored a perfect score on the ACT. Marisa is a very
talented young woman whose intellect and determination are only rivaled by her leadership and care and
compassion for others. We are very proud of Marisa both in and out of the classroom," says President
Sharon Redmond.
The ACT is a college readiness test given in all 50 states and accepted at every college and university
in the country. In 2011, over 1.6 million students took the ACT. Less than 1/10 th of 1% score a perfect
score of 36.
UA Parent Associations make generous annual gift
The Ursuline Parent Associations, jointly consisting of the Mothers' and Dads' Clubs, were delighted to be
able to make their annual gift to Ursuline for the 2010-11 school year in the amount of $76,000. This gift
represented the largest ever given by the Associations and directly reflects a year of successful events
supported by our dedicated Ursuline parents. Outgoing Mothers' Club and Dad's Club presidents Katie
Robertson and Tom Cowperthwait oversaw a year of record-setting participation by UA parents across the

oard from all classes. Many thanks to our parents for their commitment to their daughters' education at
Ursuline and their financial support that made this generous gift possible!
