King is a happy 2-3 year old Cocker Spaniel mix boy. He is extremely outgoing and affectionate.
King is super playful and energetic. He loves games and learning new commands for food
rewards. He already knows to “sit” and “lay down” on command. He needs continued work with
leash skills and his forever home will probably want to crate-train him to keep him out of mischief
when he is left home alone. King is a fun-loving boy who hopes to soon land in a forever home of
his very own. Please visit the shelter to meet him today!
Cmpd Animal Care & Control also holds an adoption event
Freddy is a wonderful kitty. Although he is playful and exploratory he always comes back to the
couch for some lovin. He’s a purr box and has recently learned to knead. He gets along well with
other cats (he grew up with a sibling brother and two adult cats in his foster home) and knows
about dogs. He’s funny and very entertaining! If you are interested, please contact his foster
mom, Officer Conner, at jconner@cmpd.org.
Arts Beat
A snapshot of arts-related news items
Calling all artists!
There are two upcoming opportunities
for area artists to showcase their work in
Matthews.
Matthews Alive!:
The Matthews Alive! Board of Directors
are looking for the official art piece for this
year’s Matthews Alive! Festival.
The selected artwork will adorn the festival’s
posters, t-shirts, event guides and will
serve as the cover for the festival’s special
promotional section. The winner also will
receive $750, according to a press release
from the town.
In its 19th year, the festival is a four-day
event over Labor Day weekend which raises
money for area nonprofits who send volunteers
to help work the festival. The festival
attracts more than 150,000 attendees each
year.
Submitted artwork should follow this
year’s theme, “Destination Matthews,” and
focus on the places and things that make
Matthews a destination or bring tourism to
the town.
The deadline for submissions is noon
Friday, July 15. For more information and
details on how to submit your artwork, visit
www.matthewsalive.org.
Public art:
Matthews will accept applications through
Aug. 8 from sculptors who want to participate
in the town’s new public art project.
Sculptures will be located primarily in
downtown Matthews and include locations
such as the Matthews Community Center,
Four Mile Creek Greenway, Matthews Fire
and EMS Department and Stumptown
Park. The town plans to rotate the sculptures
every six months to allow a variety of
art and artists to be showcased. Sculptures
must be able to withstand the elements, be
“touchable” by the public and rest on pedestals.
Art submitted for the program will be
selected by the Parks, Recreation and Cultural
Resources Advisory Committee.
The Town will not buy the art. Artists will
Holliday
(continued from page 22)
Giving more, giving back
Holliday spends a lot of time now
doing charity work for a variety of organizations.
The performance with the
Charlotte Symphony will be a fundraiser
for the United Negro College
Fund, whom Holliday has worked with
for the past 15 years. She also has done
several college tours to raise money and
awareness for education.
She had so much success early on, her
advice for aspiring singers is insightful.
“The business is so different today
because right off the bat they make
more money and so much is given before
donate the art for display. The art may be for
sale and if sold while on display the town will
receive 10 percent of the purchase price.
The town anticipates art will be installed
in late August or early September.
Mint Hill Arts preps for next exhibit
Area artists can drop off their work Thursday
June 30 from 4 to 6 p.m. and Friday,
July 1 for Mint Hill Arts’ “Something Old,
Something New,” exhibit.
The show, open to members and nonmembers,
encourages artists to enter at
least one “old” piece and one “new” piece.
“You can even think of this show as a mini
retrospective of your work,” Mint Hill
Arts entry information says. “The idea is
to share our artistic journeys with each
other and have some fun with this show.”
Artists must enter an approximate date
(year) on the entry form next to the title of
each piece.
The nonprofit will host a free opening
reception July 8 from 7 to 9 p.m. at its gallery,
From Project Art Aid, with love
Project Art Aid raised $14,000 last week
for the American Cancer Society’s Making
Strides Against Breast Cancer at the Project
Art Aid Goes Pink! Exhibition.
The event was the second project for
the Mint Hill-based nonprofit, which was
founded in 2010 by Mint Hill resident and
artist, Rosalia Torres-Weiner and her husband,
Ben Weiner, to help bring local artists
together to impact global problems through
art and creative expression.
A highlight of the evening, came when
Project Art Aid unveiled a pink heart mosaic
to be donated to Presbyterian Hospital’s
Cancer Center. The mosaic, which was
comprised of 100, 6-by-6 paintings, was
titled “One Heart” and was a collaborative
work of 100 artists, eight of whom are cancer
survivors.
they have proven themselves, but what I
think never changes from generation to
generation is knowing who you are and
being grounded,” she said. “You have
to find a source of belief in the world
that you have something to offer to the
world and be true to yourself. When
I was young, I never had a chance to
define what my own dream was. So I
think now at 50 I am able to dream new
dreams and actually see myself with
something.” q
Charlotte Symphony on Saturday, June
25, at 8 p.m. For tickets and more information,
